untitled

I removed a claim that Ellen Page was romantically linked with Michael Hampson; Google shows no appearance of their names together save in the Wikipedia article and Michael Hampson was created today as a page full of nonsense ("His hobbies include licking stamps and going comando in his jeans.") -- Antaeus Feldspar 02:48, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

there was some very indiscrete, most likely completely false stuff in her biography. i took the freedom to erase it. -- b.-c. s. 27th of may 2006, 00:31 cet

Irrelevant Information

"and lost her virginity at age 15." Is this true or even necessary? It seems highly personal information to be included on a biography. 86.136.109.255 22:48, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Well whoever did do her is gonna to get an arrow in the forehead, that's for sure. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lemonsters08 (talkcontribs) 17:28, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

I think it's a misinterpretation of online information, which reads: "MOUTH TO MOUTH (102 Minutes)... Sherry (Ellen Page- Hard Candy, X Men 3) is a 15 year old punk kid in London... She loses her virginity, and her illusions as well as she gets drawn in and discovers too late that S.P.A.R.K. is actually very cult-like." gssq 18:16, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

I know we're meant to assume good faith, but it's probably just vandalism; someone who wants to shock by adding sexual content (esp as she must have lots of rather young fans). the best thing to do it just keep reverting when you spot it. Amo 19:26, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

Also - about the 15 thing, she did that movie when she was 17 - Yohowithrum About that movie (Mouth to Mouth) her character (Sherry Green) was 15, and that may have been the mix up. But yes, she was 17 at the time.Markuscross (talk) 14:34, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

She's also a Canadian actress, since she was born in 1987, she'd be 15 in 2002. The age of consent in Canada was still 14 at that time. Tyciol (talk) 05:01, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

More biographical information?

Anyone have more biographical information, regarding her religion, ethnicity, family background, parents? It seems that she's playing a Jewish character in her next film, but not sure about this. Smeelgova 20:37, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

There's a samattering more info, but nothing significant in the categories you've mentioned. Shadowcat is indeed jewish, but i've seen no suggestion that page is. Amo 20:41, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
She went to Shambala School in Halifax, which tends to have mostly Bhuddist ties. 24.222.118.208 19:18, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
Why was my edit marked as vandalism, if I removed an out-right lie. Someone who was only identified by an IP number said that Page was an out lesbian and used her interview with David Letterman as a source. I watched the video and nothing like that was even mentioned. I'm disappointed at being associated with "vandalism." A29105 —Preceding comment was added at 03:15, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Appearance helping career

"Her attractive appearence helped her further in her career." I don't think this is relevant. A lot of actors are attractive, and undoubtedly it helps, but to my knowledge Page is not reknowned for playing inherantly attractive characters. Lots of people on messageboards say she's unnaturally young-looking, unnatractively androgynous etc, so i don't think her looks are really noteworthy unless she makes it to a "most beautiful" poll or something. Amo 20:27, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm going to keep removing things like "She is currently regarded as one of the most attractive actresses" until someone can provide a source that this a widespread opinion. Amo 15:04, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
I personally think she is gorgeous, but Amo is right. Most actors are attractive (it's sort of a job requirement). And I really dislike whoever says she's "unattractively androgynous", but I guess I'm just a guy with a crush... Either way, you're right. 89.138.31.157 21:27, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
How can she be "unattractively androgynous"? it's a ridicolous assumption made probably by persons that do not have a straight sexual orientation, and it is not a widespread opinion.("lots of people on messageboards"). I really can't distinguish the androgynous traits. 89.32.1.82 19:09, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
Um, i'm not entirely sure what you mean User:89.32.1.82, but all i was commenting on was a lot of people saying that she looked like a little boy, and suggesting that that was an inherantly bad thing. Amo 16:32, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm glad someone removed the comment about her looks backed up by the IMDB messageboards as a source, because Wikipedia:Reliable sources states that "Posts to bulletin boards...are never acceptable as primary or secondary sources." Just to clear that up. Amo 16:50, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

You can't refer to a minority as "a lot of people". it's the first time i hear the term "androgynous" associated with her. it's completely absurd. she is absolutely gorgeous and i don't think looking young is inherently bad. in addition, how can one look "unnaturally young"? 84.234.110.198 11:33, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Hey, I'm not out to bash Ellen; if i weren't a fan i probably wouldn't be looking out for article. personally i find it offensive that you think androngyny and "gorgeous" are mutually exclusive. I only mentioned that i have seen on the internet and heard in personal discussion the opinions that a) she looks young for her age b) that that is a bad thing c) she looks boyish (this has also been written about in interviews) d) that that is a bad thing. The purpose of this was to prove what a moot point it is to have any critique of her looks, especially one which is not a notably entrenched view. Amo 17:02, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Just thought I'd stick my oar in long after everything's died down on here, but she's only being referred to as androgynous and boyish because she has her hair cut short for her role in Hard Candy. Her features are obviously feminine: thick lips, big eyes, small nose, need I go on? It's make-up for a role, you can't judge her on that basis and on the basis of imdb message boards. Also User:89.32.1.82 was saying how offensive it was to link androgyny and unnatractiveness, as Amo had done. Driller thriller 13:24, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
The only reason her hair is so short in Hard Candy is because not long before that she'd finished filming 'Mouth To Mouth', where she'd had to shave her hair completely off.NinjaJew 17:09, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

This is way after the fact, I know, but I'd just wonder why it's so offensive to link androgyny and unattractiveness? I doubt seriously that any of you are or even know someone who is androgynous, and if you do (or are) then you know it's not attractive. Sometimes it's offensive to be realistic, but that's life guys. 64.81.108.2 (talk) 03:17, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Fair Use images shouldn't be used for living people, as it is possible for a free use image to be taken and uploaded.
As for the original comment, just because pictures have been taken doesn't mean we can just grab them and upload them. However, if one of those fans wants to upload their photo and give it a Wikipedia-compatible license, that'd be great. EVula // talk // // 18:08, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
Actually, upon reviewing the article, a picture of her as Kitty could be put in the Filmography section, as it would illustrate a character she has played. Fair Use images just can't be used to show the actor. EVula // talk // // 18:10, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Awards

If you're going to add her Academy Award nominations to her filmography, you might as well add notes on other awards/nominations she's won, as well. Twinchester 18:24, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

I personally don't think the awards that she won or were nominated for should be mentioned in her filmography table. For one thing it's already mentioned in the Awards section and the notes in the filmography table should be about the movie itself. Ospinad (talk) 20:04, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Some needed changes

The last paragraph in the "Career" section begins with this sentence:

"As of 2010, she serves as a spokesperson for Cisco Systems in a series of ads appearing in three commercials set in Page's "hometown" of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia."

But I have no idea, and neither does anyone else, what the quotes around "hometown" signify. Could someone knowledgeable about the situation rewrite this with clarity held more important than being cute?

Another thing: the sentence just before the one quoted above is this:

"She is attached to star in the film Super, and will reportedly play Stacie Andree in an upcoming film about Laurel Hester."

There is a very large overlap among the vocabularies of the major forms of English, but this usage of "attached" is not in it. Maybe the meaning is "She has signed a contract to . . ." or something similar. Perhaps someone knowledgeable can rewrite that sentence, too.

Finally, the person of "Laurel Hester" in the above-quoted sentence is nowhere near a household name, regardless of whether she ought to be. Stacie Andree, her domestic partner, is even less known. So it would be far more appropriate to describe the role as that of "the domestic partner of the New Jersey policewoman who [Hester's reason for fame goes here]" than to just mention these people by name.

In the filmography section, it lists her newest movie as "The Wrong Picture", but if you click the link the movie is called "Bop DeCameron", however on the page it says that it's "also known as The Wrong Picture". I honestly don't see the problem with the image currently on the article. It's a professional photo of her at an event smiling directly at the camera. Just like a movie, it doesn't belong in the table unless there's evidence that it's actually in production, not just announced. Until then, it remains only in the body.--Bbb23 (talk) 19:59, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

Tone down the rhetoric. This isn't a big deal in the scheme of things. Can you find some reliable source (not a YouTube copyright violation) that the game is in production? If so, we can put that in the body and then properly put the entry in the table.--Bbb23 (talk) 20:08, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

I think that's an excellent source for it being in production. Too bad we couldn't have resolved this before the protection.   Maybe DMacks will lift it now that we're getting along better. Another option would be to make an edit request. Worst case, we put it in after the protection expires. We should also use that source in the body as it's better than the one currently cited. Thanks!--Bbb23 (talk) 20:20, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

(edit conflict) The article has now been fully protected over this dispute and the edit-warring. I have to say I am as guilty as anyone - I should know better. My assumption is the protecting admin will lift the protection if we can come to an agreement about what to do about the table. The protection will expire on its own in a couple of days.--Bbb23 (talk) 20:15, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

DMacks kindly lifted protection on the article pursuant to my request. I have restored the entry in the table, tweaked the sentence in the body, and added The Verge as a source. 94.170.227.166, please see what you think. Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 15:11, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

Closet tag

Note on 2/16/14: Ellen Page has come out as gay. Since her wikipage can't be edited will someone please do so. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.184.163.80 (talk) 03:17, 17 February 2014 (UTC)

I removed the "Closet" tag which was at the top of the page. It read "This article is about a subject who recently came out of the closet. Information may change as the event progresses."

Announcements about her sexuality are not an 'event' that may change rapidly. The banner was just a demeaning representation of the whole situation as a media scandal. Wikipedia is not a tabloid. Her coming out should not somehow throw the rest of the article into doubt, like perhaps a subject passing away would. This is not about being proud or ashamed of LGBT culture or sexuality or whatever, this is about representing people as people and not participating in media spin.

202.46.138.86 (talk) 07:31, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

Is there even a real 'closet' tag? I mean, there's not really a story for something like that; a person is gay or they aren't (yes, I know about all the different sexualities, but for the sake of argument, keep it simple). If anything, I think this page should be semi-protected until the media forgets about her being gay. SirkablaamTalk 10:30, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
If there was, I'd nominate it for deletion. But as far as I can tell, it was just a once-off custom ambox, added in this edit. There's not actually any {{Closet}}. Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 13:42, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

Gay vs Lesbian

In the article, it says she came out as "gay" … not "lesbian." While lesbian is used exclusively for female same-sex attraction, gay applies generally to same-sex attraction. There is no doubt that she is female, so it is unnecessary and redundant to impose the word lesbian. I feel we should respect Ellen's choice of noun to describe her orientation, especially since it is understood that both gay and lesbian have their own nuanced lingusitic baggage.
Enquire (talk) 06:37, 17 February 2014 (UTC)

Support - The sources in the article refer to her as "gay" in their titles, not lesbian. In fact, the articles don't ever use the word lesbian at all. A direct quote from Page herself uses the term gay rather than lesbian, "I'm here today because I am gay,". I definitely agree with the usage of gay in place of lesbian, as you suggest. --Nicereddy (talk) 06:49, 17 February 2014 (UTC)

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. I don't consider TMZ reliable at all. It's simply a tabloid for celebrities... Technical 13|e is right, TMZ is most definitely NOT a reliable source, particularly about things about living people which require the highest level of sourcing. Most content on youtub is not published by those with a reputation for fact checking, accuracy and editorial oversight, which are the types of sources that we demand for content about living people. and even if there were actually reliable sources, including the event in the article would still be giving WP:UNDUE weight to meaningless trivia. Remarks

Current text is "On February 14, 2014, Page came out as gay in remarks at the Human Rights Campaign's "Time to Thrive" conference".

It wasn't a "remark" she made in passing, she was on stage giving an 8-minute speech about this, as linked in the refs. "in a speech at the Human Rights Campaign" would be the better wording.

E.g Variety says "In a speech at the Time to Thrive conference Friday, actress Ellen Page came out as gay." Ellen Page Comes Out as Gay 202.81.242.11 (talk) 14:55, 12 April 2014 (UTC)

it was not an 8 minute speech about her coming out as gay, - the speech itself, a good 7 and a half minutes of it, was a far more general speech about supporting LGBT youth with about two lines announcing her own orientation and 20 seconds of applause. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 15:32, 12 April 2014 (UTC)
I've changed "remarks" to "speech", as it did seem to be a formal speech as opposed to some off-the-cuff remark to a reporter or whatever. Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 04:33, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Not done: I'm not sure what encyclopedic value that picture would add, nor am I sure whether it could be used here per the image use policy. Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 04:33, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Change the picture at the top to something more recent and more reflective of Page's clothing preferences. Tarrowfaulk (talk) 22:54, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

Removal of various awards

I notice that users are removing many of Ellen Page's "Best Actress" awards (Mostly SNUGGUMS)-- some of which appear on other Wikipedia pages and seem fine and referenced. Can you help me understand what criteria makes the "Atlantic Film Festival Canadian Award for Best Actress" an acceptable award to keep on, while the "Las Vegas Film Critics Society Award for Best Actress" is unacceptable? Please change the main photo of Ellen Page to a more recent photo of her. I believe the one that is currently in use is outdated. Thank you. Kwebb134 (talk) 10:20, 6 May 2017 (UTC)

Not done for now: Please re-open the request if you have a recent picture of her. DRAGON BOOSTER 11:18, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
But note, Kwebb134, than only certain types of images can be included in Wikipedia, as described at WP:IUP#COPYRIGHT. In this case you'd probably need to find an image that's either freely licensed or public domain. Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 14:24, 7 May 2017 (UTC)

Awards and nominations

I think one section of "awards and nominations" is enough. The other should be removed. Sebastian James (talk) 11:54, 17 August 2017 (UTC)

In the Personal Life section, please change the year 2017 where it states, "On November 10, 2017, Page alleged that filmmaker Brett Ratner.... It should state 2005 when the film was being made and when Ellen Page was 18. So, maybe this is just a typo. Thank you. 2600:1700:DA90:BAF0:19D:1FAA:DA58:58B8 (talk) 22:05, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

She made the accusations in 2017. This could maybe be worded more clearly. – Þjarkur (talk) 22:37, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

Elliot

He has just come out as trans on twitter, and as such, the article should be edited to reflect this.

RadialDespair (talk) 17:15, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

Already done - Pronouns changed, article title updated. There might be a few things still left to do on the article itself, but those will be completed shortly GoodCrossing (talk) 17:38, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

I just saw this news and came to English Wikipedia, and by the time I looked, contributors had moved the page and thoroughly updated it. Thank you all so much for your work. I appreciate it and I know so many others do too. Sumana Harihareswara 18:47, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

His new name and pronouns

On the first day of December Elliot decided to come out as trans and change his given name from Ellen to Elliot. I believe the Wikipedia page should reflect that transition. https://www.facebook.com/TheElliotPage/posts/10158082664172449 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.217.169.8 (talk) 17:19, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

Already done - Pronouns almost all changed, name changed in article title, there's still a few things that need to be changed but that should shortly be completed. GoodCrossing (talk) 17:36, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

Change all pronouns from "she/her" to "he/they" per their statement issued by Elliot Page- https://twitter.com/TheElliotPage/status/1333820783655837701

Additionally, consider a change to the article title to not have their dead name at the top, but rather instead redirect searches for "Ellen Page" to Elliot Page; per the same statement. Nawendana (talk) 17:25, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

Done - Some pronouns might still remain, currently in the process of changing all of them, also just moved the article so it is no longer their dead name. GoodCrossing (talk) 17:33, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

CHANGE HIS PRONOUNS!!!!

To whoever wrote the above, there is no need to be so rude. Wikipedia would obviously be updated and you come here shouting like a child only a mere 17 minutes after the tweet was posted. You expect others to update every entry instantly whilst contributing nothing yourself? Grow up.

Partly done: - Currently in the process of being done, article name also changed by moving GoodCrossing (talk) 17:32, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

XD, sorry for this edit, but this is absurd day by day... --78.102.53.207 (talk) 17:43, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

Their tweet says that they use they/them pronouns, not he/him. Tristanjlroberts (talk) 17:58, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

Wait, just realised I misread and the tweet says he/they, nvm Tristanjlroberts (talk) 18:00, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
