With defining Digital Journalism the way that the description defines, we are allowing everyone to become a journalist. No matter who you are, what degree you may or may not have, you have the capabilities to become a journalist. If you blog, post videos on YouTube or any other video sharing website you could be considered a journalist. I believe this is an appropriate approach of digital journalism. As discussed in our lecture readings, one main purpose of journalism is providing the audience with accurate news. What better way than with the citizens?

Journalism has grown a long way from the early years of sending a paper around to your neighbors of the happenings to now with television news stations and the Internet. With this more and more people are able to access the news. Even without television you could receive the newspaper, and even yet, you could use your computer or the public library’s computer to access the Internet. -Kathleen Monk

There are lots of talks that traditional journalism as we know it is dying; however, it is only just beginning. Digital journalism is reshaping the way we distribute and receive our news. No longer is the responsibility solely on the reporters to go out, get the news then report on it; now citizens are able to share their take on news and voice their opinion publicly.

One of the most important things about the growth of digital journalism is the shift from the “one-to-many” model to the new “many-to-many” model. With the old model, news was determined by the few to distribute to the many, so even if you could not relate or did not agree with the news that was being published, there were really no other options. Now, with the “many-to-many” model, virtually anyone can publish what they feel is newsworthy and gear it towards specific audiences who can relate to their opinions.

I think Digital journalism can be described as a rapidly growing concept that has changed the traditional means of communication, shifting from print to online media. More and more people are becoming involved in broadcasting news in the form of citizen journalists. It is these people who are changing the face of news, making it readily accessible and available to anyone. I believe with everything, in order to progress, there has to be change. I feel the same way about digital journalism. I know many who believe what's important is keeping tradition alive, but nothing stays the same and the main focus of journalism should always be to be objective, and express facts and opinions in a logical way, the medium that we use to express these things shouldn't matter that much.164.76.243.185 (talk) 15:44, 2 December 2009 (UTC)Adrienne Conner

Rename article?

Journalism is a profession and activity carried out by people. In itself it has nothing to do with digital media, which are merely the means of transmitting the journalistic product. As such, referring to electronic or digital journalism is a misnomer. It would be more accurate to talk about "journalism in digital/electronic media". For that reason I propose a name-change or consolidation of this article under a more appropriate heading.

My interest is professional: I have been a journalist for more than 20 years, starting with a manual typewriter, a camera using film (not digital memory), and a tape recorder. Later on I used PCs, desktop publishing software, digital cameras and recorders, and HTML editors to produce output in print, online and for radio broadcast. My point is that the practice and methodology of journalism never changed. Only the tools and output media altered.

It seems to me that to speak of "digital journalism" implies a practice distinct from "journalism" without a qualifier. If that is to be the subject of this entry, the case doesn't appear to be made clearly enough.

October 25 Edit

These are the edits I will do:

-Move overview section to the beginning of the article. Give more basic information and move the FTC issue to the blog section.

-Make the history section the second section of the article. Give more information about the history of online/digital journalism after the history of teletext. I'll write of videotex, then the rise of digital journalism and the first commercial web browsers and the basic state of digital journalism at that time. Then I will give a brief summary of it in today's world.

-Contribute information regarding blogging as a source of news in the blog section

-Contribution information to the citizen journalism section: a one sentence comparison with corporate journalism and one sentence about an example of citizen journalism that builds off the claim left in the previous edit of this page that citizen journalism is effective when there are citizen editors

In the History section, it would be better to add more reliable citations to support the information. Also in the section, Impact on Publishers, there are not enough references to unnamed sources of information, such as "many people say" and "most websites reporting".
