Talk:Deaths in January 2022

Latest comment: 1 year ago by 2.99.4.229

Oussou Konan Anicet wiki page makes no mention of ‘poisoning’ as the cause of death or any details regarding this. While I have no dispute one way or the other, I would expect it to be a very interesting cause of death that would have some serious data and information to back up the claim and explain the possible reason for such a death. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.99.4.229 (talk) 05:19, 25 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Madam edit

Another editor persists in describing prostitute procurer Jody Gibson (died 2 January) simply as a "madam". The primary article madam describes the term as "a polite and formal form of address for women", and says nothing about the sexual nature of the colloquial term. To assist readers' understanding, I think we should use a qualifier like "prostitution madam", but the other editor has reverted this too. I am interested in the opinions of other editors. Thanks. As it is how she's described in sources, I can see where it's coming from but if it doesn't even appear on the primary madam page, I would consider it improper. Use the proper terminology. Chef, not cook for example. Rusted AutoParts 07:36, 4 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
As you say, there are normally two meanings of madam, a sexual and non sexual one. Therefore, I suggest brothel madam to differentiate. Editrite! (talk) 22:45, 4 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
A procurer or "madam" redirects here, which was linked long before I saw this topic. Wyliepedia @ 12:12, 5 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Oussou Konan Anicet edit

There is no mention of poisoning AFAIK, but this man died of a "sudden illness". [1]

Vietnamese sources reported he was poisoned.--79.24.120.74 (talk) 14:35, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Please quote your Vietnamese source when questioning information already supported by other sources (such as the one you did include above). A change, if appropriate, would then happen all the sooner. Ref (chew)(do) 18:01, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Sidney Poitier edit

Ambassador role? edit

Should we add Sidney Poitier's ambassador role? He held the position for ten years (1997–2007) and it was for a major country (Japan)? --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 17:32, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

I'll just say that his entry in the page already drops into a second line on 4:3 computer monitors. Overblown lengthy descriptions are not ideal in a project like this. Ref (chew)(do) 18:06, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

COD edit

TMZ has revealed his cause of death to be Alzheimer's, heart failure and prostate cancer as per as per this new article. His entry on the Deaths in 2022 is already long enough. Should we remove "film director and activist" or one of his credits to make room for the death causes, or just leave it out altogether? I'm wary that entries shouldn't run into two lines when being viewed on a browser screen. Thanks --Jkaharper (talk) 00:14, 19 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps we go with the more immediate COD? As per the certificate, it's cardiopulmonary failure. As for removing film director and activist, I would'nt object. His film directing credits aren't terribly notable, and his article doesn't even make reference of any activism. Rusted AutoParts 00:28, 19 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Everett Lee edit

He is listed as having died January 12, 2022 but someone keeps deleting my edits on his page. Did he pass away or not? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.87.248.39 (talk) 00:57, 16 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Where is the reliable source that establishes his death? WWGB (talk) 01:36, 16 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
If you do not link the source on his page it will be reverted again. Not so difficult to understand.--Folengo (talk) 09:54, 16 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
The credible source was linked in the list. Is that not enough? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.87.248.39 (talk) 17:46, 16 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
@IP: No. Other Wikipedia articles are not reliable sources as per WP:CIRCULAR. Renewal6 (talk) 22:00, 16 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Emerich Roth place of birth edit

Roth was born in Veľká Sevljuš in Czechoslovakia (now Vynohradiv in Ukraine) in 1924. In my view, it makes him Czechoslovakian-born, since the town was under Czechoslovakian rule then. He is not Czech-born since it was not the Czech Republic, and he was not Ukranian-born since it was not under Ukranian rule then. --Marbe166 (talk) 21:17, 22 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

I think this should be quite straight forward. If a person was born Czechoslovak, but died Swedish, he should be called a Czechoslovak-born Swedish something. If he was born in Czechoslovakia, but died a Czech, then Czech is enough because he always was that. Same goes for Soviet-born. Born in the Soviet Union, but died Australian = Soviet-born Australian. Born in the Soviet Union, died Russian = Russian. Nukualofa (talk) 21:52, 22 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Fully agree. --Marbe166 (talk) 22:02, 22 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Agree. Also, as per Folengo's remark, we might have done this but calling a soviet-born "russian", "ukrainian" or "lithuanian" seems just as wrong to me. • Huferpad talk 23:35, 22 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Except that the Soviet Union was always a collection of countries united under a doctrine. Czechoslovakia was a country, even if it was just a tactical ploy by the Czech Republic and Slovakia to leave Austro-Hungary in 1918. Identifying countries of birth following the end of that partnership seems natural and obvious to me. For example, in my own mind I am first and foremost English, then British by historical political design. Ref (chew)(do) 07:17, 23 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Anyone can be what they want in their own mind, and I have no doubt that especially in the United Kingdom, which is a union of Countries, or in places where there is a strong regional identity, like Catalonia or Brittany, one might not only see themselves as part of a region, state or whatever name you give to a subnational division, but also project such view onto others. Still the fact remains that you hold a British passport and British citizenship, and not an English one, just as Ravil Isyanov (the first instance I've found of the case in point) held a Soviet passport and Soviet citizenship and not a Russian one. My personal view on the matter is that an encyclopedia should stick to fact, and not to what one feels in their mind, however "right" this might seem (even to myself). • Huferpad talk 13:24, 23 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Jean-Jacques Savin edit

I’m asking this as a means of clarification. Savin was reported as being discovered dead in his cabin after his boat overturned. But it’s now been revealed he was not recovered. So, would this make it a disappearance and we wait until he’s declared legally dead, or does this operate as an obvious drowning and keep him on the page? Rusted AutoParts 06:30, 24 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

I think we need to wait until his body is recovered or there ia a formal declaration of death. WWGB (talk) 06:41, 24 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
