A week?
editI'm mulling this over and am still incapable of understanding it:
- A prolific writer, Thomas' career has been most successful when his circumstances have allowed him to concentrate on writing. A position at the American University, for example, proved disastrous and was cut short after only a week.
A week? A week? How could one seriously know what impact this assignment would have on one's writing career after just a week? How could a week lost ever be considered disastrous, in any sense of the word? Maybe if you blew a deadline, but then we need that additional context to understand.
I wonder if anyone can find a source for this claim, to soothe my own confusion if nothing else. --Saforrest 15:29, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
Allegations of Plagiarism
editThese are dealt with in the body of the article. It is inappropriate to put them in the initial paragraph. Please would editors be very careful to maintain a neutral point of view and keep to the policy in WP:BLP. Springnuts (talk) 22:27, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
A Cornish Poet?
editA cornish poet? Did he write in Kernowek or something like this or why isn't he just british? This sounds strange for a reader of this article, if you live on the continent. --13Peewit (talk) 20:29, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

- ... that the Cornish poet D. M. Thomas blamed himself for the death of Lord of the Flies writer William Golding (pictured)?
- Second last paragraph of The Guardian , 2006. "I thought, My God, I've killed him! Keeping him up too late and causing him to drink too much... Perhaps Ben Jonson had the same feeling about Shakespeare. I wrote to his daughter expressing those fears."
- Last paragraph of The Daily Telegraph, 2018. (archived link) "He thinks a late night of his drinking and singing may have caused William Golding to die"

Overall: Interesting hook, neutral, expanded fivefold within last 7 days, since Nov 6. The sources used are in the article. No QPQ needed as this is nominators first DYK (if I'm correct). Per WP:DYKIMG, the image shown here is not used in the article, so the image should be removed unless another solution arises. Thanks. Harobouri T • C (he/him) 01:43, 10 November 2022 (UTC)
- Didn't know about WP:DYKIMG, the image shown here is now used in the article. X00y (talk) 14:43, 10 November 2022 (UTC)
- @X00y: The photo is in the article, but I don't know if the image has relevency in the article to sufface it being within the article. I'll ask for a second opinion, maybe active contributors to DYK like @Theleekycauldron: or @Lee Vilenski: could help me out? Harbouri: Let's talk! - I haven't checked out the article, but if the hook is right, I don't see an issue with this image of it's suitably captioned. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 19:36, 10 November 2022 (UTC)
- Well, the image is in the article now – as a matter of policy, i don't think there'd be basis to remove image. As a matter of personal taste, I'd say that I'm not a huge fan of running lead hooks that divert our readers from the bolded article – I'd wager that this image would direct a lot more attention to Golding. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 19:43, 10 November 2022 (UTC)
- : On the basis of the second opinions, the photo seems that it is within policy and I will be approving. Thanks! Harobouri T • C (he/him) 20:43, 10 November 2022 (UTC)
- @X00y: "blaming himself" isn't quite the same as "wondering if he had caused Golding to die by not leaving earlier, with the other guests". Could the disparity be corrected? theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 06:10, 17 November 2022 (UTC)

- I'd recommend not using the photo on this one. The main subject is Thomas, and that's not a photo of him, so that's kind of confusing. -- RoySmith (talk) 15:31, 21 November 2022 (UTC)
