Jane from the Ender Saga (by Orson Scott Card) Influence on Cortona

I expected someone on the Cortana wiki page to bring up Jane (Ender's Game) from the Ender novels by Orson Scott Card as being the primary inspiration for her character.

Similarities between the two characters include:

-Both are artificially intelligent beings, accompanying the protagonist wherever he goes.

-Both help out the main character with 'computer' stuff, and give plot information on the 'computer' world which the main character would be unable to provide to us on his own.

-Both are girls, with light, sometimes comical personalities, and covert sex appeal.

On the other hand, there are many differences as well:

-Cortana's mind is cloned from her creator's. Jane's mind came from nothing but the computer network itself.

-Jane is basically the whole computer network. Cortana is a part of the Master Chief's suit, and has to go out into the network to do her hacking.

Also, I only know about Cortana and Jane from a few sources, so I expect someone who has played Halo 3 all the way through, or has read more Orson Scott Card than I have to tell me why I am wrong to think that these two characters are very similar. Zf2645 13:04, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

No that would be original research, Bungie has never said this was the inspiration behind Cortana so the simmilarities are pretty much redundant to the article. - Caribbean~H.Q. 16:32, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

GA

Yeah, no major issues here. *tries to find something to critique; fails* I suppose another image would be nice...anything else on the backgrounds of the character too (quotes from game designers, etc.)...but yeah, nice work. Dihydrogen Monoxide 02:50, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

If someone has seen some concept art for designing Cortana, like the image of her crying out for Halo 3, but preferably the original concept art when they were designing her, that would be a good image for character development. James086Talk | Email 03:53, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Question

"...she is instrumental in preventing the Halo installations from being fired, which would have wiped out most life in the galaxy."

Why would the termination of employment of an installation cause most of the life in a galaxy to be destroyed? SharkD (talk) 01:22, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

No, she prevents the halos from activating. As far as I can tell, it's grammatically correct, if awkward. David Fuchs (talk) 02:04, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
I just took a shot a clarifying that sentence. — TKD::Talk 04:20, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Nefertiti

Is that section on Nefertiti ok? I'm a bit worried it's out of place. I added a similar section to the Nefertiti page, related to cultural impact of the queen herself. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 150.204.151.8 (talk) 15:42, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

cortana dead

ok so i heard that cortana dies in the ending of the halo on legendary i havent finished it on legendary

I think you should actually Finish the Fight before you go around making untrue rumours 92.4.164.217 (talk) —Preceding undated comment was added at 01:40, 28 December 2008 (UTC).

In the fictional world of Halo while A.I do not "Die" they malfunction or as they call it Rampancy which is to be presumed since it looks like no Halo game is even rumoured to come after Halo 3 i.e fall Reach, Harvest (which preceed the game Halo combat evolved storyline)

http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Rampancy

I think that Cortana can't go rampant. In the Halo Encyclopedia, a Forerunner AI Mendiciant Bias, is captured and "probed" by the Gravemind, just as Cortana was. Anyway, The AI was later destroyed into fragments, which suprisingly didn't destroy it. Instead it was stowed away of the Dreadnought, the Forerunner ship in Halo 2 during the High Charity missions. It survived and powered the ship itself, so the bottom line is it never died, even though it went through ramapancy. So Cortana might have to go through it to survive...

She doesn't die. She's just split into several sections. Go play the flipping game. I completed on legendary solo. Her fate is never truely know, is open so shouldn't say her death. --Ronnie42 (talk) 03:20, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

easter egg on computers in multiplayer

is there any truth to the rumor of the cortana easter egg oon multiplayer level with a computer if so shouldn't it be mentioned

No, trivia is not notable and its against most guidelines, in a article of this class there shouldn't be any unless its particulary notable. - Caribbean~H.Q. 03:30, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Eh?

There's no such thing as a "british accent". ;) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.134.216.146 (talk) 01:03, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

There are many accents which would be called British by those who aren't familiar with the variety of accents throughout Britain. While some differ greatly they could all be called "British". I doubt that the people at Bungie knew much about the different accents so they were just looking for one that sounded British to them. The commentary that mentions this only says "British" not Devonshire or Lancashire accent so we can't be more specific. James086Talk | Email 01:28, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

"Cultural impact"

This heading should be removed. It gives off the appearance of being some kind of general (pop) culture section when it's really just the response from and commercial ventures of the video game industry. This is not recommended by Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Article guidelines and is misleading and should be reserved for section that deal with actual cultural impact outside of the video game community.

Peter Isotalo 05:51, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

As far as I can see, the guidelines mention nothing about naming a section "cultural impact". --Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 13:05, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
That it's completely missing is exactly my point. There seems to be no motivation for it at all. I'm also not the only one to complain about this, btw.[1] The complaint I have is that it's a misleading section with no function. Articles about other forms of fiction and entertainment, such as films and novels, don't label their promo and review sections "Cultural impact", even when they have had a very significant general impact (which most video games still don't). They sort this under "Popular culture" or the likes. Why should this be unique?
Peter Isotalo 16:40, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
Aside from your very ignorant characterization of video games, the heading in no way implies "this character changed the world forever." Culture has a much more narrow definition, in regards to the particular identity, goals and practices of a group (in this case, video gaming, or the video game community). And please, complaints on Necrid don't necessarily transfer to this article. We're talking about a character who appeared in one game versus the second-most important character of three bestselling video games and three bestselling novels. --Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 17:10, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Explain me why we have no mention at all of Cortana's role in Origins in Legends

Because after all, every skit in Legends except Odd One Out is canon. (190.12.153.187 (talk) 13:19, 10 January 2010 (UTC))

Do you have a reliable source for Cortana's appearance? Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 14:27, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

I saw Origins. (190.12.153.187 (talk) 15:24, 10 January 2010 (UTC))

...And did you bother reading the linked item above? "I saw it"≠reliable source. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 15:30, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

This always happens to me, always get to deal with users that haven't even cared for watching Legends, I'm not lying nor I am stupid, and you can watch Origins anytime on youtube if you missed it on Waypoint or if you don't have LIVE, or you can leave the page incomplete as it is. (190.12.153.187 (talk) 15:33, 10 January 2010 (UTC)) Halo Legends sucks! Why do you even watch it. Most make no sense, all look terrible, completely atroshish, no freakin' dur... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.202.203.159 (talk) 04:15, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

HALO 4

What no Halo 4 selection? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.71.62.95 (talk) 02:27, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

Because we have no verifiable info besides "she's in it." Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 19:37, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

Notice

This article does not mention what most people are probably here for: is she a real person or just a hologram? • GunMetal Angel 04:43, 29 November 2011 (UTC

It says that she's an AI in the lede. -Jer Hit me up 17:43, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, but that's confusing and could mean anything. People could believe that "AI" is referring to in-game AI (i.e.: the intelligence that is made-up for video game characters). • GunMetal Angel 18:57, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
It could be because I'm a fan of the series and know it from playing, but I think the way its worded in the lede establishes that the she is an AI character and not the in-game AI. But who knows, maybe its just me, hopefully someone else will offer a comment on this. -Jer Hit me up 19:14, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Have you ever considered to indicate this section as a spoiler?? I just finished Halo 4 game but it's not fair to show this to other guys who didn't!!! elettrozero —Preceding undated comment added 11:31, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

Update the image profile

Cortana needs a picture from her Halo 4 self now, I think. (186.30.95.117 (talk) 23:06, 20 January 2013 (UTC))

I'll see what I can do tonight or tomorrow. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 18:16, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. (186.30.95.117 (talk) 01:54, 22 January 2013 (UTC))

Here also you forgot to write who created the character

Dead Links

Using the Checklinks tool, I've updated the page's dead links. A few notes:

  • Ref 14 (fixed) updated with Wayback.
  • Red 48 (fixed) cannot be crawled by Wayback due to Robots.txt. Updated with archive.today. Removed dead link tab.
  • Ref 50 (fixed) updated with Wayback.
  • Ref 64 (removed) according to this archive.today snapshot of the page in the citation (the only archived version currently available), cortana didn't even make it into the quarter finals of the voting, and in any case, it doesn't really seem appropriate to list a random fan poll in a Featured Article. I've removed the tidbit and citation. Please message me with your concerns.

I also removed this:

Cortana is still not available in India but we can still activate in any country other than US. How to Activate Cortana in India/Outside Us.

This was thrown in underneath the reflist template. This link (if it worked) would belong in the article about the Microsoft Cortana, not Cortana the character.--chrisFjordson (talk) 03:50, 27 April 2014 (UTC)

I zapped that last problem the moment I saw it. Guess we had a minor edit conflict there. Zero Serenity (talk) 03:52, 27 April 2014 (UTC)
Ah, I was wondering about that. I reviewed the conflict page but didn't see the change (since we both removed it, nothing was bolded). I just assumed I hit the save button twice. It was such a weird thing to see thrown in; the rest of the article looks solid.--chrisFjordson (talk) 04:06, 27 April 2014 (UTC)
