Capability: Rip
editWould it be useful to add an additional column to indiocate the capability of ripping an optical disc to an iso image? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.87.70.232 (talk) 13:50, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
"Extract, the ability to copy the contents of the ISO file to a hard disk." --Hm2k (talk) 01:02, 22 November 2009 (UTC)- Can Create: Specifies whether the application can create a new ISO image file, either by capturing the image of an actual disc or by composing an ISO image file from locally-stored files. Vote: Two lists vs. one list
editNow that we have a prototype for the list in table format, it calls to question whether the community will support maintaining two separate lists. I proposed a vote at Talk:List_of_ISO_image_software to gauge the community's support for maintaining two lists or consolidating the lists into one. Stephen Charles Thompson (talk) 03:13, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
- I have restarted this discussion here. --Hm2k (talk) 12:26, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
- It has been resolved, that the "list" has been deleted and the Comparison will continue to be supported. Stephen Charles Thompson (talk) 21:59, 20 December 2011 (UTC)
Table Headers / Scrolling
editComparison chart does not have scrolling headers. Periodic repetition of headers, such as between OS platforms, would be easier to read. It would also show the primary sorting order. Stephen Charles Thompson (talk) 03:06, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
P.S. Beautiful work. Much thanks to the editor.
- Agree Thank you for this wonderful chart. Ccubedd (talk) 20:51, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not familiar with "scrolling headers", please can you provide an example. --Hm2k (talk) 01:00, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
MagicDisk
editThe link for the MagicDisk software leads to a product called Magic Iso Maker which seems to be shareware, not freeware. There is an option to buy it for around $25 and no information about the software license. Can anybody confirm why this is listed 'freeware' here ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.123.201.182 (talk) 20:32, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
- MagicDisc and MagicISO are both made by MagicISO. The MagicDisc is freeware, MagicISO is not. Please read more carefully. --Hm2k (talk) 00:57, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Image Master Information
editI noticed that for the program Image Master there wasn't a wikipage. I don't know enough to start a page, but if a link to the webpage was added [1] it would be slightly more useful. I don't know if adding an external link to all the programs would be useful, but it wouldn't take up much room and it might save some clicks and be generally useful. Also, Image Master is open source, but the license is GPL. Should this be added/fixed? Calc fanatic68k (talk) 20:59, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

Incorrect information
editI don't have the time to check all the information in that table, but I noticed that some of it is definetely incorrect. First, MagicIso supports much more formats, not only ISO; I think that they have created the UIF format. Second, the uif2iso application is available for multiple platforms. Third, I am not sure, but I doubt that there are so many tools which work only on Amiga. If someone has good sources and more time, he/she should please clean up. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.117.230.25 (talk • contribs)

Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel
editThe link is wrong (it's redirected to Microsoft's article which does not even mention this product) Plus it looks hard to find (unable to find a webpage about it, only direct links to an executable), and unmaintained (the name of the exe mentions winxp). This entry should probably be updated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.175.74.22 (talk • contribs)

Vandalism?
editI don't know the topic at all, but this edit came from an account that appears to have been used almost entirely for vandalism. It made quite a few removals, which should probably be restored. Might be irrelevant after that particular page was redirected here. - Jmabel | Talk 17:30, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
- Negative. You have misinterpreted the edit. The aforementioned edit is not vandalism at all and no removals is made; only some items are moved to and fro. Besides, the article to which you have linked no longer exists. It is redirected here. The content of both articles are merged here. Fleet Command (talk) 18:42, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Revision of this article?
editThis seems to be a strange mishmash, consisting almost entirely of CD/DVD imaging software with a few HDD ones thrown in randomly. I believe that should be revised, and perhaps the solution is to merge with disk cloning as proposed; however I believe that perhaps both articles should better be revised and divided to CD/DVD cloning&imaging and HDD cloning&imanging which I feel would be better categorization. --Arny (talk) 22:02, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
- @Arny: Hi. This is a good idea. I think I did read something about "disc" and "disk" in MOS:COMPUTING. Acronis True Image, Image for Windows (disk imaging), Norton Ghost, Macrium Reflect and libguestfs can be banished to Comparison of disk cloning software and List of disk cloning software. Licensing column
editI am trying to make the column sort usefully by distinguishing FOSS from not and using consistent names. Was the previous sort behavior more helpful in some way? Why are you reverting this edit? --Tim (talk) 21:50, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, Tim@
- This is the third time I am reading your sorting claim and I am just as baffled as the first time. It is sortable.
- If only I knew what you actually are trying to solve... Care to tell me?
- That's not the only problem. The layout in your edit is poor. And apparently, you think everything licensed under GPL is automatically free and open-source. (Free yes, but open-source needs additional investigation.)
- Best regards,
- Codename Lisa (talk) 21:53, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
- Yes the table will re arrange but not in an order that is helpful.
- There are three main categories of software license "pay for use", "free", and "open source", each having many licenses.
- most people don't care exactly what the licenses is they just care about category (is it free or is it open source).
- With the current sort method these categories do not get grouped by the sort and the sort is thus ineffective for the user.
- 1) in what way is the "layout in [my] edit is poor"?
- 2) Yes everything GPL must be open-source; "GPL ... guarantees ... the freedom... modify the software" you can only do that if it's open.
- --Tim (talk) 22:07, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Tim@:
- Aha! Now you are making sense.
- Actually, there are five major categories of software: Commercial, trialware (dominant form), freeware (gratis), free (libre) and free and open-source. For difference between the third and the fourth, see Gratis versus libre.
- Now, to solve this problem, we can assign sort keys to the fields.
- Alright. I need to know if we are on the same page so far. Should I start talking about the sort keys themselves, or do I need to explain more about something? (e.g. about what a sort key is?) And do you mind if I moved this whole conversation to the article talk page?
- Best regards,
- Codename Lisa (talk) 22:20, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
- 1) I would classify trial-ware as a sub category of Commercial and doubt anyone cares about the destruction, same thing for open-source and "libre", but I don't really care what categories are used so long as the sorting is from most to least permissive.
- 2) I assume you retract your comment about the GPL "GPL make[s] sure that you have the ... source code or can get it if you want it..."
- 3) Please make the edit you recommend to include sort keys.
- 4) Move the conversation where you please. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tim@ (talk • contribs) 22:30, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Tim@:
- 1) Well, you should have categorically specified that price is in your mind. I am not a mind reader after all. ;) Of course, I still disagree. You underestimate kids.
- 2) Not really. Source-available is not open-source. But I guess we can put that difference aside right now.
- 3) There are several possibilities. See this: [1] It is one of those possibilities.
- Best regards,
- Codename Lisa (talk) 22:54, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
- 2) GPL specifies open-source not Source-available (as noted in my first quote about it)
- 3) so are you going to make the edit or do you want me to? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tim@ (talk • contribs) 23:29, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Tim@:
- 2) The word "open" appears nowhere in GPL. It only mandates source code availability.
- 3) I already did. How does it look?
- Best regards,
- Codename Lisa (talk) 00:22, 4 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Codename Lisa: Yes the column is now usable.
- Semantic: "Open-source" is more accurate as you can't assume the political goals of the projects which is what "Free software" is according to Stallman. "Open-source" is also more technically descriptive as "Free software" is misleading to people who don't know. "libre software" is a more accurate description, though really only the GPL is "libre software" other licenses are more accepting of use with non liberated source code.
- --Tim (talk) 01:44, 4 May 2015 (UTC)
- BTW: The word "linking" does not appear anywhere in the GPL and there are still many people who claim "linking problems" with other software. The problem with Wikipedia here is that in case the term GPL appears, religious people appear and as a result, many false claims appeared in OSS licensing related articles. Software under the GPL is not free as it's license contains unneeded burdens - burdens that cannot be enforced in court as the GPL is in conflict with the law (Copyright law Section 17 Paragraph 106) and thus only the non-conflicting parts can be enforced in court. The conflicting parts are those that try to redefine what a derivative work is. So de-facto, the GPL is not a so called "strong copyleft" license, it just adds non-free claims. Hope this helps to better understand the difference between OSS and the so called "free software". Schily (talk) 10:05, 4 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Schily: Yes it's all very interesting but do you think the column should use "Free software", "libre software", "Open-source", or something else? --Tim (talk) 13:51, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

isomaster? poweriso?
editisomaster is freely available in the debian repos. poweriso is trailware. Both allow for modification of iso's. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.31.105.183 (talk) 16:52, 20 June 2016 (UTC)
ISO Master
editThere are sufficient proofs of notability and importance of this software
1. ISO Master is only Free software (GPL) able to manipulate the contents of an existing disc image file (ISO) in this list
2. ISO Master is included in Debian and Ubuntu
Codename Lisa is abusively reverting my changes WP:NOTGETTINGIT JeanMolinier1 (talk) 20:13, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
- @JeanMolinier1: Wikipedia Notability guideline does not hold any value for being "the only free software" of its category and being "included in Debian and Ubuntu". Notability requires significant coverage in secondary sources that are independent of the subject itself. Codename Lisa (talk) 13:16, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
- @JeanMolinier1 and Codename Lisa: Both of you please keep cool and establish a consensus before further editing. And JeanMolinier1, not everyone who disagrees with you is a vandal. With this attitude, you won't last long in Wikipedia because being reverted is something very natural here. FleetCommand (Speak your mind!) 15:26, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
- 6 reverts for 1 soft without talk isn’t a vandalism ?
- my arguments are clearly exposed
- Notability isn’t mathematically defined criteria
- so see point 2
- 2. ISO Master is included in Debian and Ubuntu -> significant coverage in secondary sources that are independent of the subject itself
- There are much more controversial entries in this list
- like -> burnatonce -> according to the wikipedia page the original web site www.burnatonce.com is no longer available. The software can still be found on some download sites. ???
- and last but not least first talk to editor prove your point of view and only then remove his edits
- For every revert that Codename Lisa have made, you have made a counter-revert. I told both of you to stop warring. She has stopped. You clearly hasn't.
- Talk to Codename Lisa. If you don't insult her, she will come up with a compromise.
- That's what we are doing now we are talking so article must be reverted to original point before first revert of Codename Lisa. I’ve never mean to insult her or you.— Preceding unsigned comment added by JeanMolinier1 (talk • contribs) 17:40, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
- ISO Master once had an article. (Click on it!) It was deleted because of the absence of secondary coverage. (Inclusion in Ubuntu and Debian is both primary and dependent coverage.) But if you cite a magazine or something like that, all your problems are solved. FleetCommand (Speak your mind!) 03:00, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
- ISO Master has still has an article in Wikipedia in German,Spanish,... Magazines http://www.tuxarena.com/2011/06/iso-master-for-linux-yet-another-gui-iso-creator/ https://www.linux.com/news/iso-master-wrangles-disc-images JeanMolinier1 (talk) 00:50, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
