First update to meet standards edit

Besides general editing, I inserted a brief introduction and then sections, comparing and contrasting with related marine technologies.

What is the procedure for removing the "needs to be wikified" tag, assuming I have so wikified? Howard C. Berkowitz 00:21, 13 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Open source chartplotter edit

Can open-source chartplotters be mentioned in article? http://www.linux.com/base/ldp/howto/Aviation-HOWTO/x182.html http://n2.nabble.com/Chart-plotter-software-td1481990.html http://webscripts.softpedia.com/script/Communication-Tools/Spur-Chart-Plotter-32333.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.246.129.152 (talk) 11:24, 6 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Curiosity edit

Section moved from article to talk: RJFJR (talk) 20:48, 28 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

The first chartpotter has been made in Italy from an Italian firm "NAVIONICS" with the brand "GEONAV".

Vessel monitoring systems (VMS) also involve automatic transmission of position information to shore stations, but their purpose is more for tracking fishing vessels with respect to restricted and closed waters.

Reference to Electronic Navigation Charts (ENCs) edit

The page refers to chartplotters as using ENCs, which by definition is not correct. ENCs use only official data supplied by government-authorised hydrographic offices, whereas chartplotters and ECS can use either official data or so-called private charts, such as C-Map, BlueChart, etc. ECDIS are the only systems which use only ENCs, strictly in accordance with the IMO Performance Standards Mjsp rn (talk) 14:23, 18 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
