Hi everyone, it's Charles! I'm looking for help with my page. Some rando set it up, there was some discussion out there about it being "paid for" (NOT!) but the point is the page is really incomplete and doesn't give a full picture. Of course, I know it's not a sales brochure, but we have the same interest: accurate and complete information for the public. Is there a Wiki editor who is willing to help? I can provide solid, verifiable info and sources for what's missing. Hi! I posted the above query to the noticeboard, and got a nice reply. There are some facts that need to be added, all with reliable sources, and I would like to add my picture (which is in public domain). The problem is I am not competent to make changes myself, I'm sure I would mess it up. It there someone I can send the info and citations to for addition? Thanks so much, Charles Glasser 2601:8C:C301:179:D0B0:93DA:3BD7:EAF5 (talk) 04:40, 17 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

You are welcome to request changes here on this talk page. Please use the {{edit request}} template so that your request will raise a flag that attention is needed. With the request, it works best if you can give before-after text for the changes you are requesting and if they come with sources (you don't have to worry about formatting them, just make sure there's enough of a pointer so that an editor can find and verify them, then they can supply the citation coding). If you have a pointer to the photo, we can verify its status and upload it to Wikimedia Commons, after which it can be attached to the article. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 15:19, 17 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thanks so much for the advice. I'll give it a go, and again, I *really* appreciate your patience! Charles2601:8C:C301:179:5DB9:7ABF:FE61:6298 (talk) 18:23, 17 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

   Unable to review edit request
Your edit request could not be reviewed because the provided references are not formatted correctly.[a] The citation style predominantly used by the Charles Glasser article is Citation Style 1 (CS1). The citation style used in the edit request consists of bare URL's.[b] Any requested edit of yours which may be implemented will need to resemble the current style already in use in the article – in this case, CS1. (See WP:CITEVAR.) In the extended section below titled Citation style, I have illustrated two examples: one showing how the edit request was submitted, and another showing how requests should be submitted in the future:

Citation style
Bare URL reference formatting:

The Sun's diameter is 864,337.3 miles,<ref>https://www.booksource.com</ref> while the Moon's diameter is 2,159 miles.<ref>https://www.journalsource.com</ref> The Sun's temperature is 5,778 degrees Kelvin.<ref>https://www.websource.com</ref>

Displays as:

The Sun's diameter is 864,337.3 miles,[1] while the Moon's diameter is 2,159 miles.[2] The Sun's temperature is 5,778 degrees Kelvin.[3]

References

1. https://www.booksource.com
2. http://www.journalsource.com
3. http://www.websource.com

In the example above there are three URL's provided with the claim statements, but these URL's have not been placed using Citation Style 1, which is the style predominantly used by the Charles Glasser article. Using this style, the WikiFormatted text would resemble the following:

Citation Style 1 formatting:

The Sun's diameter is 864,337.3 miles,<ref>{{cite book|last1=Sjöblad|first1=Tristan|title=The Sun|url=http://www.booksource.com|publisher=Academic Press|date=2018|page=1}}</ref> while the Moon's diameter is 2,159 miles.<ref>{{cite journal|last1=Duvalier|first1=Gabrielle|title=Size of the Moon|journal=Scientific American|issue=78|volume=51|url=http://www.journalsource.com|date=2018|page=46}}</ref> The Sun's temperature is 5,778 degrees Kelvin.<ref>{{cite web|last1=Uemura|first1=Shu|title=The Sun's Heat|url=http://www.websource.com|publisher=Academic Press|date=2018|page=2}}</ref>

Displays as:

The Sun's diameter is 864,337.3 miles,[1] while the Moon's diameter is 2,159 miles.[2] The Sun's temperature is 5,778 degrees Kelvin.[3]

  3. ^ Uemura, Shū. The Sun's Heat. Academic Press, 2018, p. 2.

In the example above the references have been formatted according to Citation Style 1, which shows the author, the source's name, date, etc., all information which is lost when only the links are provided. As Wikipedia is a volunteer project, larger edit requests such yours are generally expected to have this formatting done before the request is submitted for review.

Kindly rewrite your edit request so that it aligns more with the second example shown in the collapsed section above, and feel free to re-submit that edit request at your earliest convenience. If you have any questions about this formatting please don't hesitate to ask myself or another editor. Regards,  Spintendo  17:20, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Notes

  1. ^ The fault for this formatting error most likely originated from the prompts used by the edit request template. These prompts ask the COI editor to "supply the URL of any references used". While this omission of information is not the fault of the requesting COI editor, it nevertheless remains their responsibility to supply the references formatted in the style used by the article.
  2. ^ The use of bare URLs as references is a style which is acceptable for use in Wikipedia. However, general practice dictates that the style already in use for an article be the one that is subsequently used for all future additions unless changed by editorial consensus.[1]

References

  1. ^ "WP:CITEVAR - Wikipedia:Citing sources". Wikipedia. 20 October 2018. Retrieved 22 October 2018. It is normal practice to defer to the style used by the first major contributor or adopted by the consensus of editors already working on the page, unless a change in consensus has been achieved. If the article you are editing is already using a particular citation style, you should follow it.

Spintendo: Thanks for the tip. I'm not a coder, but will take my best crack at it. Again, appreciate your patience and help. Charles 2601:8C:C301:179:9CFB:1A10:AD54:9AF2 (talk) 19:42, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Unclear image licensing. Although you can find that the image are under a CC license, it is not stated under which, which makes it unfortunally impossible to use them because different CC licenses might have different options regarding reuse (See WP:IUP for mmore Info). Victor Schmidt (talk) Thanks much. I followed the instructions at WP:IUP and uploaded a photo that I owned and have deeded it over to Creative Commons use. If that's still not good enough. let me know, and thanks again for the help.CharlesGlasserEsq (talk) 19:47, 1 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Victor Schmidt CharlesGlasserEsq The photo licensing (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CharlesGlasser.jpg) appears to be fine now (CC 4.0), so I added it. BubbaJoe123456 (talk) 14:21, 11 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
