Talk:Charles Gildon

I removed the sentence "Steele provided the preface to Gildon's Grammar of the English Tongue in the same year." (1) Gildon did not write that book. The confusion probably arises because Brightland incorporated Gildon's 35-page essay, "The Art of Poetry". (2) The book was published in 1711, not 1710. In the absence of cited sources, I make these points on the grounds of my own observations and readings of those books. Title pages are a good place to start.

However, there are those who do argue, on the grounds of other evidence, that Gildon was an author of the grammar itself. See, for example, Buschmann-Göbels paper in Ingrid Tieken-Boon van Ostade (ed.), Grammars, Grammarians and Grammar-Writing in Eighteenth-Century England (Berlin: Walter de Gruyter, 2008). Should anyone want to change the story to argue that Gildon was an author of the Grammar, please provide appropriate references to justify such a claim.
