ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, Belastro. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. HathiTrust fulltext vs. restricted access

Dear Belastro,

You recently edited a link to HathiTrust that from my viewpoint is fulltext, but apparently from your viewpoint is "restricted." Chambers's Will

The scan is from the British National Archives. Each image carries "reference PROB 11/702/431". I don't remember how I actually found the will there and I cannot find it again. If you find it, please document how you got there! Belastro (talk) 21:45, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

Well, I don't know. Searching Ephraim Chambers's gave me the will too. Were you able to access the page? Also, I think it would be a good idea to put Chambers's will in WikiSource to make it more accessible to people. CyclopaediaMyles (talk) 05:59, 18 March 2023 (UTC)

Thank you for the link. I also searched for "Ephraim Chambers", with the same zero result. I was quite surprised by that.

I think a question mark or two remain in the text of the will; these indicate unresolved characters. Have a go at sorting those before moving it to wikisource.

Who knows why we're getting different results but I'm glad the link worked for you. It's more nerdy curiosity than anything. I had a school project and I chose to do it on Chambers. I figured the next logical step in doing research on an encyclopedist was to work on an encyclopedia itself, that's why I'm on Wikipedia now. What motivates you? I'm interested in definition, or to get fancy, horismology. One rabbit hole leads to another, and Chambers's treatment of definition just keeps coming back to my attention. I cannot imagine what course would offer Chambers as a topic, unless it were a course on encylopedism and encyclopedists, and what university would offer that? I might just apply to study there. What did you do for your project? I've been at this for a decade, and there are just not many people around who are actively interested in Chambers. Belastro (talk) 07:19, 19 March 2023 (UTC)

Here's a real Chambers challenge: what are the demographic facts for Chambers's mother and sisters? His mother was his father's second wife. They married outside the purview of the Church of England. What was his mother's name? When was she born? When did she marry his father? When did she die? Same for his sisters. What are their names? When did they marry; who did they marry? When were they born? When did they die? Where did they live and when did they live there? In particular, did either or both of his sisters live in London between 1721 and 1736. Basic stuff. But all I know about his sisters is what is given in his will and his letters from France. Belastro (talk) 07:29, 19 March 2023 (UTC)

There certainly aren't many interested in Chambers. I just wrote a paper. Those are questions I would love to have answers to and I'll let you know if I ever get them.
