More lines?

edit

At the bottom, we only have the North Shore line. Can we have the rest of the line templates put in as well please? Thanks. Enochlau 22:28, 23 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Mortuary station?

edit

Something about the Mortuary station perhaps? I don't know anything about it, except that I think it served Rookwood. Shermozle 17:53, Mar 7, 2005 (UTC)

You can read all about it here: All Saints Church, Canberra - it became a church in Canberra! Cfitzart 11:13, 29 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
There's one on the other end as well. It's sometines called Regent St. Station on maps. They use it for functions now. - Randwicked 11:46, 29 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
There is now an article on the Regents Street (Mortuary) Station. John Dalton 03:47, 1 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

New Template

edit

A note - I made this template with the platform services with a view to putting the train destinations. Please do not add intermediate stations. Thanks. (JROBBO 05:42, 27 December 2005 (UTC))Reply

Name of Station

edit

There seems to be argument about the name of the station. The official name of the interurban part of the station is 'Central', as is shown on all Intercity Cityrail timetables, and all modern signage inside the station. The name 'Sydney Terminal' is still referred to often, but it is not an official name, so I will revert to the previous edit on this but will note that the previous name is still often used. If you can show me that this is not the case then it will be removed. (JROBBO 05:42, 27 December 2005 (UTC))Reply

The only places where "Sydney Terminal" remains used is in station announcements where the need to separate the intercity and suburban platforms (which may suggest that a different code may be used to distinguish the two "sides"...), but otherwise with signage, trackwork info, etc. I agree; it's definitely "Central", or "Central (platforms 1-15)" at best where the intercity platforms have to be mentioned specifically. (At one point in the 2000s - 2003 or 2004 IIRC - there was also a transitional phase where "Central Terminal" was used in timetables only, but that is no longer the case, and I doubt anyone else ever called it that compared to either of "Central" or "Sydney Terminal".) -Spiky Sharkie [ talk ] 13:31, 8 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Neighbouring Stations Table

edit

I know the stations appear backwards, but please don't change the table around to suit all the rest of the stations - it shows that the different lines head in different directions around the City Circle and it shouldn't' be changed. Thanks. (JROBBO 02:35, 9 May 2006 (UTC))Reply

Station for UNSW

edit

Central station is the station for all students of UNSW who live beyond the Eastern Suburbs, and hence it definately deserves a mention considering the sheer volume of students that get off there. I added a point about that the other day (I believe), yet it was taken away, I shall add it again. Nebuchanezzar 02:03, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

It's not relevant to that part of the article - Sydney Uni and UTS are the direct stations in close proximity to Redfern and Central respectively - it doesn't matter if there is a short walk, they are reached directly. Sydney Uni is also a suburb, which gives it extra reason to put it in the article as a neighbouring suburb of the station. UNSW is not directly served by a railway station nor is it within walking distance of the station - it is served by a bus from Central. For the same reason, Macquarie University is not mentioned under Epping station (even though it is the closest station); but when the new station opens it will get a mention there. Under the bus services section, the fact that there are direct express buses to UNSW is a relevant fact and there should be a paragraph or so on that fact. Please put something in there (more than my sentence), but not at the top. (JROBBO 07:02, 30 May 2006 (UTC))Reply

Taking a look at this Sydway Street Directory, UNSW, USyd and Macquarie Uni all have their own suburbs, with the former two having their own post codes. Nebuchanezzar 12:36, 6 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Platforms

edit

Ok, I have been reading this article and Im just thinking how freaking old is it?

Platforms 27 and 28 service the City Circle and the East Hills lines respectively. I will not change it because the other platforms would face duplication aswell (of which I'm not aware of their purposes.) But can anyone change the platform information to depict the actual services that 'service' them? Orbitalwow 17:58, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Central only has 25 platforms with two extra constructed but not used or connected to the network. If what you mean by actual services that 'service' them? is a list of when a perticular train arrives and where, then I'd like to remind you that Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information. You should go to the CityRail website for more information because they keep their information up to date. Harryboyles 06:07, 4 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I never knew there WERE two out-of-use platforms myself...well, you learn something new everyday. Blue Mirage 10:57, 27 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Central MLR Station

edit

I'm suggesting maybe the Light Rail section may have to be split off into their own article, as this article is meant to be mainly focusing on the railway station, rather than the Light Rail station. Any thoughts, suggestions, etc etc? --Arnzy (talkcontribs) 10:47, 24 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree. It can be in its own article like: Capitol Square MLR station, Sydney. Maybe keep a short section on the Light Rail stop with a link to Metro Light Rail. --WikiCats 11:10, 24 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Created Central MLR station, Sydney. --WikiCats 13:08, 25 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

No - there's not enough info to sustain two separate articles. This should be kept until there's enough info on the station itself. It is, after all, a transport interchange (together with Railway Square). (JROBBO 07:58, 27 September 2006 (UTC))Reply

Usage numbers and Australia's busiest

edit

I am wondering if some details of numbers of passengers per day should be included, and if anyone knows if it is Australia's busiest station - if it is can this be mentioned. Nomadtales 01:25, 21 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

It's very hard to get passenger figures from CityRail, but that would be good. I think Australia's busiest station would be either Town Hall or Wynyard station, not Central. Central isn't the busiest station on the network, but it's certainly number 2 or 3 IIRC. JRG 00:53, 26 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
As I mentioned on the [{Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Sydney|WikiProject Sydney talk page]], perhaps A Compendium of CityRail Travel Statistics might give us the figures we need. Harryboyles 02:33, 26 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Actually Central is the busiest station when you include the intercity trains as well. I recently emailed Cityrail about station patronage and Central had 89,000 per day whereas Town Hall had 77,000 and Wynyard had only 55,000. The busiest station in Australia is actually in Melboune I think. I forgot which one but one of Melbourne's stations is used by 110,000 a day. YuMaNuMa (talk) 13:44, 21 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

airport line

edit

the page indicates that two of the platforms are used as document storage, however these platforms were converted into the airport lines back in the late '90s can someone confirm this and edit —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.152.139.216 (talk) 19:32, 6 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

The page is correct. The Airport and East Hills line uses the above ground platforms (either platsform 20 - 23). The non used platforms (except for storage) are still there, directly above platforms 24 & 25. There is talk of using them for the proposed Redfern to Chatswood railway line, Sydney. through lines

edit

Hi there,

the s-line template didn't let me introduce a "line interchange" and I couldn't edit it to do so (hell, took me hours to understand the whole crap ;-)

If you like this, someone should alter s-line at least from

{{#ifeq:{{{line}}}|{{{{{system}}} lines|{{{line}}}}}|{{{line}}}|{{{{{system}}} lines|{{{line}}}}}}}

to

{{#ifeq:{{{line}}}|{{{{{system}}} lines|{{{line}}}}}|{{{line}}}|{{{{{system}}} lines|{{{line}}}}}}} ↔
{{#ifeq:{{{line2}}}|{{{{{system}}} lines|{{{line2}}}}}|{{{line2}}}|{{{{{system}}} lines|{{{line2}}}}}}}

(maybe the {{#ifexist:Template:{{{system}}} lines/branches...-thing as well) and from

{{S-line/side cell|through={{{through2|}}}|state={{{state2|}}}|branch={{{branch|}}}|next={{{next|}}}|system={{{system|}}}|line={{{line|}}}|note={{{note2|}}}|type={{{type2|}}}|oneway={{{oneway2|}}}|round={{{round2|}}}|side=right}}

to

{{S-line/side cell|through={{{through2|}}}|state={{{state2|}}}|branch={{{branch|}}}|next={{{next|}}}|system={{{system|}}}|line={{{line2|}}}|note={{{note2|}}}|type={{{type2|}}}|oneway={{{oneway2|}}}|round={{{round2|}}}|side=right}}

introducing a field "line2"!

Ok, enough headache for today ... Axpde (talk) 11:58, 23 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

60.242.124.50 Lower level photograph (talk) 23:17, 19 September 2013 (UTC) Curious to know why the photo is historical, why doesn't it show a more recent photo ? Shouldn't the historical photo go in the history section ? Its not as though there aren't alternatives, such as http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Central_station_sydney.jpg which is only a few years old --Biatch (talk) 07:07, 14 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

There doesn't appear to be a contemporary photo that shows the same level of overview of the station as the historical photograph. If anyone works in one of the tall buildings on the other side of Belmore Park, now's the time to contribute! --PalaceGuard008 (Talk) 13:00, 19 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
The station looks pretty much the same in the photo as what it does today and the historical photo shows the station in its entirety. The image displayed here is a fake hdr photo that shouldn't really be in the article. I do have a more natural looking image taken from the same angle but not quite as wide as this one. ***Adam*** (talk)
I have this image[1] on flickr that might be alright and [2] this one, although the angle is not as good as the one displayed. ***Adam*** (talk) 06:59, 21 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Here is another suggestion for the infobox, the photo can be brightened if it looks to dark

Change to the infobox

edit

why was the infobox changed? the old CityRail infobox has been retired after a discussion at WP:TFD. I will revert the change in a moment. Frietjes (talk) 15:23, 21 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

The links in the info box also appear to be in the article as well. Isn't this doubling up. Isn't it one link per topic per article. ***Adam*** (talk)
then remove the duplication, but don't restore a "being deleted" infobox please. Frietjes (talk) 16:16, 22 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hello, I have removed the services section as per your suggestion but the line section in the infobox might also be doubling up. Do you think this should be removed as well. ***Adam*** (talk)
What you deleted from the Infobox are "succession templates" that give information about the lines and previous and next stations and allows you to navigate along each line. What you left is platform information, which deceptively uses similar colour blocking but contains completely different information. Sw2nd (talk) 14:31, 23 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Would it be possible to reconfigure the information in the article to match what was in the info box. It seems that the very long info box makes the article look kind of cramped. ***Adam*** (talk) 08:41, 24 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
you could move it to an {{s-line}} templated section at the foot (e.g., see Waterloo tube station). Frietjes (talk) 15:43, 24 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Waterloo is not quite the same as the perceived problem here. The conflict is between the platform assignments and the successsion information being apparently the same. I think the article is large enough to easily accomodate the longer Infobox - but it might be nice if {{{services}}} was made collapsible. Sw2nd (talk)

Heavily faked images like the one displayed have no place on Wikipedia. Please do not alter the photo's. Use manual exposure and try to match the lighting conditions as much as possible. Also trying to divert the attention from your photos to somebody else's will not make your photo's look any better. Worry about your own first. ***Adam*** (talk) 06:07, 29 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Platforms 24 & 25

Does anyone have any photographs of the underground island platform? It'd be really nice to have at least one photo of this part of the station on the page. --Criticalthinker (talk) 12:29, 17 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Olympic Park Line

edit

The infobox currently shows services on line 7, but the article for Olympic Park Line indicates that the service doesn't reach Sydney's Central railway station. Can somebody with proper knowledge of the situation please make the necessary changes? Thanks, PKT(alk) 19:32, 8 April 2015 (UTC) It is covered by "Occasional services only" in the infobox or the platform list "Special event limited stops services to Olympic Park". These special events are also included in the Olympic Park Line article "During major events at Sydney Olympic Park, train services run direct from the intercity platforms of Central, also sometimes stopping at Redfern and Strathfield" The same applies to Redfern and Strathfield.Fleet Lists (talk) 22:13, 8 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Central railway station, SydneyCentral Railway Station, Sydney – Placenames take all caps. Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 02:53, 4 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose – It's not true, in general, that "placenames take all caps". It depends. The article suggests that the station name is Central, or Sydney Central, in which case the generic "railway station" part would not be part of a proper name, and we'd use lowercase. US editors have made this clear in their station article conventions at WP:USSTATION. Dicklyon (talk) 07:33, 4 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose - Per above. The 'railway station' is not part of the proper name, no different to other railway station articles (eg. Redfern railway station) -- Whats new?(talk) 07:55, 4 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose - Per Dicklyon. Would support a move to Sydney Central, however. --В²C 00:30, 6 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose. If anything, it would be "Central Station", a nickname for "Central railway station". "Sydney Central" sounds made up. "Central (railway station), Sydney" would be a logical construction. "Central Sydney" would be ambiguous with the centre of Sydney, which is ambiguous (which version of Sydney?). Nothing wrong with the current title. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 06:15, 10 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Station 15

edit

In the Sydney Metro newsletter covering July to September 2018 it makes note that the existing (now-demolished) Platform 15 is/was not used for train service. Perhaps someone who can properly cite this and is more familiar with this station and can confirm this can add that fact. It also needs to be corrected in the infobox, as it currently says only the two existing underground platforms (24 & 25) are unused. Apparently, once the underground metro station is built, platforms 13 & 14 will be rebuilt, but it's unclear what will replace platform 15. If anyone can find that out, that'd be great. BTW, here is the website to update all of the work that's gone on for the new metro station under Central: https://www.sydneymetro.info/citysouthwest/project-overview --Criticalthinker (talk) 10:00, 6 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Wrote the Sydney Metro folks. They say Platform 15 was never used for passengers, and was only ever used for maintenance, and will not be replaced. --Criticalthinker (talk) 02:22, 10 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
