I'll get to this shortly.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 17:07, 10 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • industrial scale uranium enrichment Hyphenate industrial and scale, high purity quantities high and purity, charged particle beams charged and particle, a five tank pilot plant five and tank
Y Done the first two; the third is not normally hyphenated. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:00, 18 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
True, but that's because the combination is vanishingly rare. Nonetheless, the principle is the same. 5-tank pilot plant is like 7-year-old child, except that tank and pilot aren't related like year and old.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 21:54, 18 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
But we have a whole article title charged particle beam. Hawkeye7 (talk) 23:03, 18 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
Indeed, but I haven't been nearly as proactive in fixing article titles as I should be.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 18:13, 26 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
     Y Okay. That being the case, I have created a redirect rather than a pipe. Hawkeye7 (talk) 22:05, 26 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • They made a breakthrough investigating the critical mass of uranium-235.[7] Their March 1940 Frisch–Peierls memorandum indicated that it was within an order of magnitude of 10 kg, which was small enough to be carried by a bomber of the day. Oliphant was quick to recognize the significance of this. Combine and rework these sentences for better flow.
     Y Re-worded. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:00, 18 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • So the vacuum in a calutron's vacuum chamber is purposely not very hard?
     Y Yes. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:00, 18 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • While still very small, it was ten times as much as Nier's. Lawrence's hunch about the effect of the air molecules in the vacuum chamber was confirmed. Combine these two for for better flow.
     Y Re-worded. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:00, 18 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • and like Lawrence deduced commas after "and" and "Lawrence"

  • possible to produce enough material for a bomb by early 1942 typo?
     Y Yes. Corrected. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:00, 18 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • You're getting a bit too deep into the weeds with two purchasing depts, etc.
  • Does any source say why the bugs exhibited by XAX weren't followed up?
    No, it just says that they didn't. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:00, 18 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • The pictures imply that the Alpha I racetracks consisted of calutrons on their sides (looking like two letter Cs facing each other) and that the Alpha II and Beta racetracks were vertical-oriented. Is this correct?
    No, they are all vertical. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:00, 18 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
Then what was the purpose of the racetrack form?--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 21:54, 18 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
The calutrons were upright Cs facing each other. "To form a closed magnetic loop and thereby minimize magnetic losses, and to economize on steel consumption"
Rephrase that bit then to clarify that the calutrons were facing each other and that the racetrack consisted of inner and outer machines.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 18:13, 26 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
     Y. Done. Hawkeye7 (talk) 22:05, 26 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • This was 13 to 15 percent uranium-235 Alpha product. The shipment of Alpha product ceased on 11 May 1944. On 7 June, the first shipment of Beta product was despatched This is a bit confusing. What use was the partially-enriched material to Los Alamos? And what was the enrichment level of Beta product?
     Y Added a bit. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:00, 18 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
Looking at Project Y's records, the uranium-235 was mainly used for two purposes:
    1. Measurement of neutron capture cross-sections
    2. The Water Boiler aqueous homogeneous reactor. Most of the Alpha product seems to have been used in this experimental reactor, which went critical in April 1944. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:50, 18 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • A couple of date format issues in your notes.
    Fixed. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:00, 18 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
