Bromate from action of sunlight on chlorinated water edit

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power claimed "bromate formed unexpectedly" in its Silver Lake and Elysian reservoirs. See www.ladwpnews.com/go/doc/1475/186421 from December 14, 2007. In fact, production of bromate from action of sunlight on chlorinated water containing free bromide and ammonia is well known. Its discovery was reported in Donald L. Macalady, James H. Carpenter and Cynthia A. Moore, Sunlight-induced bromate formation in chlorinated seawater, Science 195(4284):1335-1337, March 25, 1977. "Chlorinated waters are being introduced into estuarine and coastal areas in increasing quantities. In such systems, the chlorine reacts with the natural bromide and ammonia to produce the highly toxic hypobromous acid, hypobromite ion, and haloamines. Sunlight causes up to 50 percent conversion to bromate ion...." California listed bromate as a carcinogen in 2002. See www.oehha.ca.gov/prop65/out_of_date/53102P65notice.html. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power foolishly disregarded knowledge of the hazards in exposing large quantities of chlorinated water to sunlight, then offered the public the rubbish that they were acting out of an "abundance of caution" by dumping the contaminated water into the Los Angeles River.

Dasani's pull from UK markets edit

Isn't saying that bromate forced Dasani's pull from UK markets leaving out a bigger reason? It was a PR fiasco for a multitude of reasons, only one of which was bromate. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.16.250.139 (talk) 20:59, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
