COI tag (June 2021)

edit

The contributor seems was active in 2014 and got active now to only create this particular page. Nomadicghumakkad (talk) 14:22, 16 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

That is partly correct. I have been active without being logged in. Why is this a COI? Helenhop (talk) 15:19, 16 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Close connection?

edit

The entry has the label "A major contributor to this article appears to have a close connection with its subject. It may require cleanup to comply with Wikipedia's content policies, particularly neutral point of view. Please discuss further on the talk page. (June 2021) (Learn how and when to remove this template message)"

I created this entry and I have no connection to the subject, except that she is a chemist and I am a chemist. 6-7 years ago we attended the same conference and ended up writing a non-scientific editorial together. Calling that a close conection is strange. Please remove the lable. Helenhop (talk) 15:15, 16 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Nomadicghumakkad, please could you clarify your reasoning for marking this as potential COI? A period of inactivity on Wikipedia and then creating an article doesn't suggest a COI to me. Thank you, -Kj cheetham (talk) 15:18, 16 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hey Kj cheetham, sorry if this caused inconvenience. There are no other significant edits from the user and hence felt so. I also want to clarify that I am learning COI-spotting. More recently, my NPP rights were not extended because it was felt that I need to learn COI-spotting on my own. So I am trying to use simpler logics to figure if there is a COI or not and relying on more experienced editors like you to determine if that's logic is correct or not - imparting an insight every time. Again, sorry if this causes inconvenience or agony. Nomadicghumakkad (talk) 09:28, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Nomadicghumakkad. I recommend you become familar with WP:COI as a starting point, but also read WP:DCC, WP:SPA, and WP:DBTN. Most importantly though, you must assume WP:GOODFAITH. If you are unsure if something is a COI, you should make further enquiries, rather than tag the page and hope someone else deals with it.
On a more technical note, you should also indent your replies on talk pages as per WP:TALKREPLY. I hope this helps. -Kj cheetham (talk) 11:33, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Nomadicghumakkad There are "no other significant edits from" me, because every attempt to be active on Wikipedia has been met with the same suspicion that you expressed against me. This suspicion is not the way forward to increase the number of female editors on Wikipedia. You have effectively convinced me that Wikipedia really is not the place for me. If you were worried about any 'close connection with the subject', why did you not ask me instead of putting a COI? What did you think the connection was, that I was the subject writing about myself? Hi Kj cheetham, many thanks for your note and recommendations. I will keep those in mind. @Helenhop , I have already apologized if this has caused you any agony. Best I can further do is plead to not leave the project. You also need to understand that many students of academics very often tend to create pages. Or colleagues or related staff. So this was my guess. That you were an inactive editor who probably was asked was by the subject or got impressed to create a page. Yes, I shouldn't have tried to play detective and directly asked you while assuming WP:GOODFAITH. Hope you will decide to stay and contribute more.
