- Technically "Basel-Stadt" is more common ("population of Basel-Stadt": 23 results, "population of the canton of Basel-Stadt": 12 results; "area of Basel-Stadt": 24 results, "area of the canton of Base-Stadt": 10 results). This essentially applies to all cantons that are not named after their capital city (like Nidwalden instead of Canton of Nidwalden, Valais instead of Canton of Valais). Comment So if we're removing "Canton of" here, does that mean that we should be renaming others too, for consistency? Like, say, Canton of Zürich to Zürich (canton)? 162.208.168.92 (talk) 04:47, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
- No, why should we? Canton of Zürich does not depend on this page and presumably follows wp:commonname, or wp:natural disambiguation for reasons that concern only that particular page and not this one, unless I'm mistaken. But if there is any proposal to rename other cantons then I'll be happy to give a look. In any case "canton of" is piped out in virtually every list, see for instance List of prominent mountains of Switzerland (which can be seen as an argument for Zürich (canton)).
