Background

What has happend to the reference that Avril changed to rock for it's more lucrative prospects from country? Why on earth has that been deleted? I have nothing against the women personally and am not gonna start branding her fake or anything, i just find it weird thats been removed since there are many sources and reliable ones at that that clearly prove that Avril was a country singer and the record company converted her to rock. She Is The Best Rock Artist In The History Of Time!

Parents' origins

It states that her parents are out of Quebecois origin in the first paragraph. It then specifies that her mother was Franco-Ontarian and her father was "French-born". Both live in Ontario, where Avril was born and raised. To some, the definition of the terms might be synonamous. But they actually are not. If her parents (or their ancestors) come from the province of Quebec, then they are Quebecois. Her mom is Franco-Ontarian, which means that they probably didn't come from Quebec. They came from the Francophone minority in Ontario. These are two very different cultures and both have existed for generations. The same applies to her father: he's from France. Therefore he's French. He's not Quebecois either. To call then Quebecois is a contradiction of other facts you've stated because there is no factor that implies they had anything to do with Quebec.

To those who might not understand, it's like saying " Her father is from Cuba who lived in florida for a while. Her mother is from Louisiana. And they both live in Louisiana now. Her parents are Floridans."

It would be better to say that her parents are French-Canadians. Joel July 6, 2007

Further to my comments above, the links to the wikipedia definitions of the terms 'Quebecois' and 'franco-ontarian' explain exactly how your page is contradictory. Joel July 8, 2007

"Her parents are both Francophones, but she herself does not speak French." Implying her parents are "Quebecois" is biographically incorrect. It's not factual. Joel July 9, 2007

From reading the article, it would seem that neither statement about the origin of her parents is reliably sourced. I don't personally know which one is correct. I've added {{fact}} tags to both statements for now. This issue needs to be clarified. --Kurt Shaped Box 18:05, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Since the page itself states the ethnic origin of her parents and states than neither are Quebecois i decided to change the sentence to correspond to the lower part of the page, however i left in the fact tags

To state that the dad is from France (birth country, suggests his mother tongue is French) but that the mother is a francophone (mother tongue but no birth country) sounds weird doesn't it? Shouldn't we include the word 'Canadian' to 'francophone' to even it out? Joel July 19, 2007

And speaking of French...

the paragraph that says pronunciation of her name is generally anglicized to la-veen... come off it, that's so stupid. That IS the French pronunciation, the differences in sound from actual French would be attributed to the English accents of the English speakers who say it because she sings in English to English audiences. Or do French speakers also anglicize it this way? NOT. Otherwise the "generally anglicized" phrase should be added to every other French origin word in the the english wikipedia.

Are you saying that 'laveen' is the French pronunciation (which is not the case)? Or that 'laveen' is the anglicized version that anglophones use because her audience is anglophone? It's not really clear which side you're on. Joel 22-10-07 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.194.74.10 (talk) 16:08, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

I'm confused

Avril Lavigne was born in Belleville, Ontario[13][14] to a devout Christian family The couple married in a Catholic ceremony attended by about 110 guests on July 15, 2006 at a private estate in the California coastal city of Montecito —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.231.173.23 (talk) 05:07, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Lawsuit

Claims she plagarised the Girlfreind song. Add this anyone?

-Thanks

It's not an idle claim. If you go to the Rubinoos' site (http://www.rubinoos.com) and compare Avril's "Girlfriend" to the Rubinoos' song "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend," - both are posted on site - the similarities are quite significant.

I just went and listened as you suggested, and there are two important similarities, but I (NAL!) think the Rubinoos have no claim. Similarity #1: "I want to be your X-friend", yes, the same idea, but you can't own and idea like that, other people get to write lovesongs too. Similarity #2, the repeated refrain, "hey - hey - you - you, I want to be your X-friend", yes, exceedingly similar.... but unfortunately for the Rubinoos, it's exceedingly similar to "hey - hey - you - you, get off of my cloud". Otherwise the whole tone of the Rubinoos is wimpy, unrequited "love from afar". Avril's song is a fresh and new contribution. The whole idea of copyright law is to encourage creativity (by letting people make money from it) not to crush creativity (by letting people "own" basic ideas and squelching future creativity)

Even more significant are the similarities between the band Lush's version of the Rubinoos song, which they retitled "I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend." Lush's version of the song and Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" are almost identical. Unfortunately it appears this article has been locked.

---

...Or read this for a contrary opinion:

    http://avrillavigne.bloggergirl.com/2007/07/avril-lavigne-sued-rubinoos-lawsuit.html

---

Perhaps the widespread claim that Avril blatantly plagiarised the Peaches song "I'm the Kinda" in her "I Don't Have to Try" song should be added as well?

-Lana-, July 13 2007

Thick Southern Accent?

Avril Lavigne shouldn't be referred to as having a "thick southern accent" because she is in fact from Napanee, Ontario. She does have a rather different accent, but it is Canadian, and is not a U.S. Southern accent like the article states...please change! Steveo3560 01:08, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

Pop punk

Im not sure if she really could be considered pop punk. she is a singer song writter, and a movie actress!!! i love avril lavigne she is my fav..her best sng she recorded i think is girlfriend..i love the song..well i love her 2!! Her music has always been pop, in the early days with a thin veneer of what she liked to call punk. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 220.237.23.19 (talk) 05:36, 9 May 2007 (UTC).

Some of her songs are pop-punk, but she's pop rock.Xr 1 06:48, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

I think that this article could use more on the style of music used in each album. She has shifted slightly since Let go! and i would like there to more about music style rather than sales figures. 67.101.65.226 05:10, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

There are no credible sources that would say that she is punk rock. She puts on the trappings of alternopunkemo to get the attention of the Hot Topic crowd but she's not fooling anyone. M (talk contribs) 13:38, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Basically let go is pop punk, under my skin is punk, and the bestdamn thing is pop so i guess u could call her pop punk —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.247.22.136 (talk) 22:04, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

External links

Could you add http://www.mysitetoavril.piczo.com ? It's a fan page with lots of pics of Avril Lavigne since her begining in music. It also has great info and links. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 80.32.117.89 (talk) 10:46, 9 May 2007 (UTC).

Wikipedia is not a link directory and i doubt that a site like that is relevant enough to an encyclopia. (Pi 18:12, 20 August 2007 (UTC))

Avril + AVRiL?

There is no way the AVRiL is named after Avril Lavigne ("Trivia" Section). Absolutely no way. Please delete it. 70.69.206.62 05:08, 13 May 2007 (UTC) Proper

I agree. Deleted it. I find it hardly difficult for a weapon in such game to be a tribute of a singer like Avril. Not bashing her, it's just that seeing how bands that are totally different (Nine Inch Nails, Alice in Chains and the such) are the ones ussually noted or taken from (Doom's music comes to mind). Revert it, though, if there is actualy information regarding it. Dskzero 13:38, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

Fansites

What of posting fansites on the page? I've tried myself with a few popular ones but I found them removed the next day. Why is it so bad? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Forgotten00 (talkcontribs) 14:00, 15 May 2007 (UTC).

Because wikipedia is not a links repository. --Zoe.R 22:00, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Avril's official website has discussion forums and links to her official fan club and so fills the requirements of a fansite while also containing useful, relevant and reliable information (Pi 18:17, 20 August 2007 (UTC))

Genre of the Avril Lavigne's music!???

Avril isn`t 100% POP.... Why sometimes the genre of avril in this info are POP??? POP is Britney Spears, Madonna, Xtina, etc etc... Pop-Rock are some songs of Hilary Duff, Ashley Tisdale, etc .... (and a little number of avril's song) Alternative Pop-Rock is the music of Alanis, Pink, No Doubnt, GoGo Dolls and Avril Lavigne! Some songs of Avril are Punk-Pop....

Ooooph..... if you think that Hilary Duff and Ashley Tisdale are pop-rock, you need to broaden your musical appetite. Britney is pop. Hilary is pop. Alanis is pop. Pink is pop. Avril is pop. Gwen is pop. The only thing punk about about Avril is her boutique ripped jeans.

= GooGoo dolls and No Doubt are definitely not in the same category as Avril Lavigne. Avril is 90% pop. She's pop-punk (much like Good Charlotte or Ashley Simpson).

The webpage ALLMUSIC is very nice the clasifications of the genres-style of Avril Lavigne and the albums

  • Let Go: Alternative Pop-Rock, Teen Pop
  • Under My Skin: Alternative Pop-Rock and Teen Pop (WHERE TEEN POP IN UMS?)
  • The Best Damn Thing: Pop-Rock, Punk-Pop, Teen Pop

On the section about how ex boyfriend sells Avril's love letters on Ebay, there is a link (#31) that supposedly verifies this. But if you read what is on the linked page, it doesn't say anything about love letters nor Ebay. Just that she and her bandmate broke up. I don't doubt it happened, but it needs to be verified/verifiable.

She is more punk-rock. Girlfriend, Complicated, Nobody's Home, My Happy Ending, etc. --Elena Jovovic 01:08, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Shes her own style. shes not exactly pop, punk or rock but i propose a new category avril-pop!!!!!!!!!!!!!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.247.22.136 (talk) 22:09, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

there is absoulutly no way she is pop-punk, the is only reason people sometimes classify her as pop-punk is because stupid 10 year old girls see how she dresses and think shes hardcore, all she really is is a poser

-J.R.

She can have more than one genre. Add something to the list - Alternative rock, rock, pop rock, punk pop, punk rock, post grunge Please do NOT delete a genre from the list, only add if neccessary. If you want to remove a genre, just start a subsection below and state why you want to remove a genre. 60.230.2.29 02:02, 10 November 2007 (UTC)A Guest

We need some criticism

Was this entire article written by a 10 year old girl? I'm not asking for some expletive ridden rant like you would find on Urban Dictionary, just basic criticism on her contradictions and genre crossing. In the "Media Image" section, it gets close to criticism but then shies away from it at the last second.

7FlushSetzer 19:25, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Yes yes, please. A general criticism section would be nice.

Why does every single page on Wikipedia need a "Criticism" section? What do you want to criticise Avril Lavigne for? Do you want a section that looks like:
"Criticism
According to some people, Avril Lavigne is inauthentic... etc"
Come on... KEK 16:06, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
At the moment it seems like this whitewash of a page was written by Lavigne's management. Doesn't seem very encyclopedic at all.Dr Faustus AU 08:32, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

I you want to be critical, you could say she is un-naturally short and has no real boobs to speak of........bit like a munchkin from "Wizard of Oz" really. 195.41.191.54 10:06, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

I've added a Criticism section with something that happened at a Mexico City signing event. Some hours after I wrote that, user 71.70.165.3 deleted the section without saying why... The article indeed appears to be written and defended by Lavigne's management. Pablo 06:53, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Well, I've removed your text as well. However, please don't presume my action has anything to do with "defending" Lavigne; I'm sure she can take care of herself. You are right in noting that the article could use a rewrite. It is well-referenced, but could be more encyclopedic. However, a note about her being grumpy doesn't accomplish that, nor is it notable or relevant. That doesn't make it any less annoying to the fans in Mexico, but it does reflect Wikipedia's guidelines. What would be more appropriate is cited material describing how industry professionals, critics, and the like feel about her work - both positive and negative. (BTW, please try to avoid calling it a "Criticism" section - that title generally causes problems Wiki-wide, as it becomes a magnet for anyone who wants to complain. This isn't just a musical artist issue, it affects all of the articles.) --Ckatzchatspy 08:30, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
Fair enough Pablo 00:48, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
FYI, Pablo, one thing I should clarify is that I'm not trying to suggest that behavioural issues aren't relevant. If there is an established pattern of behaviour, and (more importantly) if the observations are made by verifiable, notable sources, then it should be considered for inclusion. One-off incidents aren't however. Sorry for not including that easrlier. --Ckatzchatspy 07:53, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

post grunge

she is not post grunge! post grunge is stuff which sounds like nirvana or pearl jam but after the mainstream period. avril sounds nothing like them! also may i point out that she is not pop-punk cos thats pop tunes with punky lyrics (good charlotte etc) but singing about skater boys and girlfriends is just POP!

^^HEY YOU CAN HEAR THE DVD "MY WORLD"???? Some songs have a changes post-grunge example Sk8er Boi, Losing Grip.... and some songs of her are punk-pop ..... the music punk pop is not necesary "thats pop tunes with punky lyrics" .... if the instrumental music have chords/tabs of punk.... are punk-pop.... and she sing cover of punk-pop bands ;)

VISIT www.allmusic.com ..... In this web the genre of avril are : Post-Grunge, Alternative pop rock, rock, pop-rock and teen pop (LET GO); Alternative pop-rock, rock, teen pop (UNDER MY SKIN) and Punk-pop, pop-rock, rock and teen pop (THE BEST DAMN THING)

This artical should really be catigorized under "desputed genres". Some say she's Pop, some say Punk, some say Grunge. Its impossible to tell because here image has basically done a backflip ever since she started singing country music in the begining. -FallingSkies 19:17, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

She's not post-grunge.Allmusic lists only her first album as post-grunge (although I don't think it's correct)Xr 1 19:41, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Her look may be post-grunge but her sound is bubblegum pop 71.236.147.130 02:02, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

She can be post-grunge. I'm not saying all her songs are, but there are a decent number of songs that are post-grunge. 60.230.2.29 02:07, 10 November 2007 (UTC) A Guest

Genre edit dispute

Every time I visit this article there are different genres listed (both in the infobox and elsewhere); they're being persistently changed by various editors, none of whom cite their sources, and many of whom (as indicated above) edit them according to what genre(s) they themselves think) Lavigne's music is best described as. This constitutes original research and, as such, should not be occurring. If people don't provide reliable sources when they add, remove or change a genre (or undo the edits of one or more other users), I'm afraid the article will have to be protected until this dispute is resolved. I think most readers and editors here would prefer if it didn't come to that. Extraordinary Machine 01:31, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

How about we include all genres that people suggest (unless its completely not relate to Avril) instead of deleting other genres that other people put in? Add to this list: Alternative rock, rock, pop rock, punk pop, punk rock, alternative pop, post grunge ~Guest~

Is Avril really post-grunge?

Personally, I don't think she is. There's very few, if any, critics and professionals that say she is; also, she's not mentioned on the article listing post-grunge artists. Either this article or the post-grunge list needs to be revised, since there's a inconsistency. None (or very few) of her songs have soft verses, then explode into a powerful chorus, with simple guitar chords. I've heard all her albums, and the only song that might be classified as Post-grunge is "Too Much to Ask" from Let Go. One post-grunge song doesn't make a post-grunge artist. Many rock bands have country-like songs, but they aren't labeled as country on their pages; why should this be any different? 67.177.184.125 01:51, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

I very much agree. I also wish somebody would take off "drums" on her "instruments" list, because she IS not a drummer. User "Kurt Shaped Box" said that "she messes around on the drums sometimes" or words to that effect, I presented facts that Kurt Cobain "messed around on drums" (most notably in "Seasons In The Sun" on "With The Lights Out") yet he is not listed as a drummer. Please remove. Speedboy Salesman 09:38, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
Did I word it like that? I don't honestly recall (I only dimly remember the discussion). Anyhow, if Kurt Cobain played drums live or in the studio with Nirvana on certain songs, I'd personally list 'drums' on his instruments list. I saw Lavigne play live a few years ago and she was definitely 'playing the drums' on one song (I think there have been others, though I haven't really been following her career recently). There is also a featurette on the DVD that comes with the special edition of Under My Skin where she is seen practising her drumming and discussing how she had decided to learn the instrument. --Kurt Shaped Box 15:31, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

"Seasons In The Sun", Rio, 1993 that's in the "studio" it's on With The Lights Out DVD. "Rio" by Duran Duran, 1993, with Novoselic on guitar, Grohl on bass, Cobain on drums. Documented in Heavier Than Heaven, I can find some citation if you don't believe me. HELLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also there's a YouTube video floating around some a live Nirvana concert with Kurt on drums. Again I can find the clip if you really want. So I make my original claim, please remove "drums" from her infobox. Or let me remove it without you just putting it back in. Speedboy Salesman 17:21, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

I have the Nirvana box set. I don't remember him playing the drums on that track - but on the other hand, it's been that long since I watched the DVD that I can't remember that much about it at all... ;) So, if we have proof that Cobain played drums for Nirvana (as Lavigne has done with her band), why not add 'drums' to his instruments list and leave it at that? --Kurt Shaped Box 17:27, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
I would suggest you look. Last track after "Talk to Me". I don't think neither Cobain nor Lavigne should be listed as a drummer, because neiher is really noted as being one. If we started adding stuff like that to every page, Dave Grohl's infobox would be a good foot long. Try to add "drums" to Cobain's infobox if you really want, but it'll get taken off. I really don't think neither Cobain nor Lavigne should be listed as a drummer. Speedboy Salesman 22:30, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
At the end of the day, Wikipedia is not a paper encyclopaedia. There's no reason why Dave Grohl's infobox *shouldn't* be a foot long, if all the information contained within is verifiable. --Kurt Shaped Box 07:49, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
Can you give me a proper song that Lavigne has played drums on in the studio? I mean the fact that she has messed around on the drums with her band has no merit, because a lot of people do that, and they don't class themselves as drummers. The bass player from my band messes around on the drum kit at rehearsals, but that doesn't make her a drummer. Speedboy Salesman 23:08, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
Avril has many post grunge songs: Losing Grip, Take Me Away, Forgotten, My Happy Ending, etc. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.230.2.29 (talk) 01:49, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Trivia section

Aparently, this article used to have a trivia section, and it was removed at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Avril_Lavigne&diff=132292871&oldid=132146285 by banned user SweetCarmen. Per WP:TRIVIA one should not wholesale remove trivia sections, but rather integrate them into the article if possible. Here for those wondering, here is the removed content:

  • Lavigne has teamed up with Del-Rey Manga for a two volume series entitled Make 5 Wishes. Volume 1 was made available for purchase on April 10, 2007, and Volume 2 will be available in July.[1]
  • Lavigne plays a signature model Fender Telecaster electric guitar.[2]
  • Lavigne's brother Matt appears in the video for "Girlfriend" as part of her band playing the bass.
  • Lavigne's sister Michelle appears in the video for "Sk8er Boi".
  • She has a pizza named after her at LaPizzeria in her hometown of Napanee, Ontario.
  • She has a miniature schnauzer dog named Sam. He appeared in her DVD My World.
  • Her first album, Let Go, is contradictory to her song Keep Holding On.

I'm sure at least a few of these are notable outside of a trivia section. --Aknorals 09:03, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

  • Avril did street performing before her hit album "Let Go" was released. She sang material from her upcoming album on a subway train and on the city streets with her guitarist on her "Try to Shut me Up" tour DVD. She also did street performing before being spotted and sang in churches and festivals.

Addition to "the best damn thing" cd description.

Since Avril released "The Best Damn thing" there have been three incidents of ppl alleging creative misconduct. One being the complaint of copyright infrignment by The Rubinoos already mentioned on the page. The second however relates to Songwriter Lauren Christie of the production team the Matrix, who said to Rolling Stone Magazine, Lavigne only changed a couple words to the music he created. Lavigne insists of course it was a joint effort. The third incident happened with songstress Chantal Kreviazuk suggesting to Performing Songwriter magazine that Lavigne stole one of her songs for the disc The Best Damn Thing. This was all reported by the CBC and can be found on <http://www.cbc.ca/arts/music/story/2007/07/04/lavigne-lawsuit-girfriend.html> Nwilloug 22:03, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

Punk-pop genre!

Hey why in the genre of avril it does not appear the genre pop-punk? are various link that they say that Avril sings punk-pop. Example

And a lot of web have some info of that... and other genre just like power pop, and post-grunge (More than everything it has that caracteristic sound, in the live concerts, of some songs just like sk8erboi, losing grip, and others) and in under my skin she have a alternative rock influences in the songs... but is Alternative Pop-Rock =)

Thanks, I hope that they add these discussed genres mainly... first that it was discussed (201.249.29.33 13:37, 10 July 2007 (UTC))

As far as I'm concerned that's not a single by Avril Lavigne. If she ever released a cover version of that song, it should be included in the article. But nobody ever said that she released a cover of that, anyway. Where did you get that information from?--84.129.79.43 22:14, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Lots of Vandalism Problems Here

Today, I saw two separate samples of vandalism: one thing claiming she's a cannibal, and a fake and insulting web address. I've gone ahead and removed the cannibal reference, and put the proper web page URL back up as of 7/27/07, but maybe this page should be completely protected instead of just semi-protected. Current Name

There's an article, already linked, that says her current name is Avril Lavigne Whibley. So I removed Ramona from the first paragrah, so it now correctly states her current name. The Ramona info is still in the info box where her birth name is listed. Her professional name is still listed at the top of the infobox, and I added a phrase about it as the Wikipedia style manual suggests. Ariadne55 01:41, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

I have a few songs not mentioned here.

I Don't Give A Damn - 3:32 (Slightly shorter length than "I Don't Give - 3:38" - is this the same song?)

Knockin' On Heaven's Door - 2:51 (Everyone and their mother has performed this)

Two Rivers - 3:06

Please respond.

--Wexer9 23:40, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

I Don't Give a Damn is the unedited version of I Don't Give, and it includes the word 'shit' in the chorus. I don't think the songs you're asking to be added are relevant, though; they're b-sides and rough tracks, but I may be totally wrong in thinking that. -Amy

I'm not asking them to be added, I'm just wondering what they are. Any other insights? --Wexer9 00:39, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Genre Dispute; Spouse; Criticism?

I know there are several sub-queries for this, and I may be wrong for adding one, but this one is going to address all the confusion, not just with some of her listed genres. Frankly, I think we've got too many. All Music Guide has been found to not be a reliable source on both the Green Day and Blink-182 talk pages, as AMG just lists every possible genre that the music can be listed under (and, the people over at Green Day believe that All Music Guide puts post-grunge as the genre for any kind of rock music that came after the grunge period). If we're going to do that, we could put country, as Avril DID at one point sing country, or we could put rap (I'm just throwing out a ludicrous example) because she "rapped" on the song Nobody's Fool. Do you see what I'm saying? Three to four genres should be listed, at max- If just to make the article cleaner and more reliable.

Personally, I don't think she's teen pop- She briefly delved into that realm on the song Girlfriend, I think, but not enough to merit for an inclusion of her into that genre. I think she's pop/rock and pop/punk (with a heavy emphasis on the 'pop,' but there's no denying there are popular-punk inspired chord changes and styles to a couple of her songs), and, maybe, Modern Rock, because that's what a lot of Under My Skin fell under. This is just my opinion, and I'm fairly new to this Wikipedia system, but I just hate coming here and seeing it change every few days. I don't know the difference between personal research and just finding articles with sources, but I think there are enough sources to validate my opinion.

Can we add her spouse's name to her little box on the right? I'm just curious- I've seen it on other people's Wikipedias.

And yes, a criticism section would be wonderful, and valid. I do find it interesting that she brags of writing her own songs, yet all the people she's collaborated with have raised objections to her claiming the songs as her own (even though those people may retract the statements later). I also liked how she called herself 'the Sid Vicious of this generation' when she was 17. 67.64.149.184 17:32, 1 September 2007 (UTC)Amy

(With regards to the genre issue). This has literally been going on for years now and I honestly cannot envision editors even being able to fully agree on what the put in the box. Personally, I'd punt for Rock music and Pop music, leaving it as generic/all-inclusive as possible. Still, I tried that and IIRC, one of them was removed with a "she's not <whatever genre is in the box>" edit summary - then someone else wasn't happy with the genre that was still listed and changed it to something else, then someone else wasn't happy with that, etc. etc.... :(
{{Infobox musical artist}} doesn't support a 'spouse' line. I just tried it. --Kurt Shaped Box 19:05, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

A little while ago, Avril started a website called Perez Lavigne, where celebs (and normal people) join and vote to, basically, get Perez Hilton off the Internet. Celebrities who have already joined include Britney Spears, Ashley Tisdale, Linsday Lohan, and Christina Agulera (SP?). For a while now the image has been avrilgfdl.JPG, but some anon editor keeps on adding in avril guitar.jpg. I'm all for finding better free images, but the second is a blurry concert photo where her face is partially obscured by a microphone. Neither are perfect, but at least the first one is relatively close up, clear and has a decent angle on her. The second one is more recent, but only by a year apart, so it doesn't make much of a difference and its of a much poorer quality.--CyberGhostface 19:41, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

Genres

I ditched all of the genres from the infobox other than "Pop-rock". It's succinct enough that it captures all of the music she makes. Throughout the page is information articulating the type of pop-rock she makes, but the infobox ideally doesn't specify to the tee the exact type of music, just giving a generalised idea of it and hopefully if there's a musical style section, it can be broken down and analysed and described in detail there. --lincalinca 12:48, 9 November 2007 (UTC)Avril Lavigne ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

/me totally agrees Darth NormaN 13:36, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

I don't *totally* agree. It's okay to put three-four types of genre in there, most other artists have that many, it was just that people kept getting pissy and adding like 50 genres in there. I think pop-punk should be in there, too. I'm by no means a member of the Avril-is-really-punk group, but I think her music either falls in the pop rock or pop punk category, and there are enough sources to verify that.65.64.201.97 —Preceding comment was added at 02:57, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Number-one singles

I just edited the number-one singles table, because it said that Avril had scored 7 number-one singles in Canada. I checked the history, and changed it to what it was a couple months ago. But I still don't understand why this table and the table in her discography have differences. I think the table on this page has to be adapted to the one on her discography. Blacer (talk) 19:03, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Strange..it says here that she had 8 number-one singles in Canada. But I agree with adapting from the dicography since most numbers are correct. \\Zhi\\ (talk) 16:28, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
On second thought, why not just keep the number one singles section in the discography article? Most of the information mentioned here is already on her discography, so why repeat the whole thing? Controversy

How old was she

In one of avril lavignes first songs she says "I might have fallen for that when i was 14 but its amazing what a couple of years can be,"the word couple means 2 ,so 14 + 2 =16.Which means she was about 16 when she started singing. --71.83.130.43 (talk) 23:02, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

Well, it’s well known that Avril has always been complaining about or criticizing paparazzi and troubled peers. I mean, there isn’t an interview of hers that doesn’t contain these kinds of questions, plus she did pull a prank once on Pop Fiction. So, I think this thing is significant enough to be mentioned in the article, and maybe also something about the constant contrast between her current image and what she said when she was first coming out. { Zh! } (talk) 17:05, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

b2t: since this is an encyclopedia, we should not judge her music.. the best damn things is just one of her albums.. and thats it.. i dont think we should say "this is worse" or "this one is better" or "she changed her style and music and now she sucks" or anything like that even if the number of sales may say something else. if one is interested in those numbers, he/she can read the album articles :) --Darth NormaN (talk) 10:40, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Genres

Someone *please* change the genres back to "Modern Rock," "Pop Punk," and "Pop Rock." Someone came in and added all the genres she's a small part of. You know, like "Rap Rock." It's ridiculous. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sillycucumber (talkcontribs) 16:07, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

I removed the recent genre additions. The cites for them all went to song names. A good cite would be to an article that states that her music overall is part of that genre. Also, the article shouldn't be based on just one song. Many artists do a song or two outside their primary genre(s), as a cover, a challenge, or a novelty. Ariadne55 (talk) 16:26, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Name

Shouldnt it be "Avril Whibley" Since she married dyreck whibley? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.175.211.21 (talk) 01:45, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

No. Thats an olde fashioned view that women have to change their name when they get married. Makey melly (talk) 11:36, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Agreed, but unfortunately she did decide to change her name, so the page has to reflect that :-( Ariadne55 (talk) 12:19, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Her legal name is Avril Ramona Lavigne-Whibley but her business name is Avril Ramona Lavigne. The 'Lavigne Whibley' needs to be hyphenated.

Avril rulez (talk) 12:55, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

I know right. I don't know what's the problem but there are two different names. There is Avril Lavigne Whibley & Avril Ramona Lavigne. I think someone should edit the page and combine the names together to make her name Avril Ramona Lavigne Whibley. Her life story would make sense if the name was included like this on the page. Someone please fix this. Cookie Monster (talk) 19:37, 23 May 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.119.187.105 (talk)

Both are correct as they are in the article right now. Her birth name was Avril Ramona Lavigne, as it is listed in the infobox. Next to her name in the lead paragraph there is a link to an interview in which she stated that she decided to change her name to Avril Lavigne Whibley when she got married. There is no hyphen in the cited source. So the lead paragraph has her current legal name ("Avril Lavigne Whibley"), followed by the name she still uses professionally ("Avril Lavigne", no middle name). as we know she has a brother (i think his name is Matt or something like that) and a sister as well.. any ideas how to add those information? --Darth NormaN (talk) 16:13, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

If you find a source for their names, a sentence such as "She has two siblings, A and B" or "She has an elder brother, A, and a younger sister, B" might fit in the first paragraph of the background section. Ariadne55 (talk) 16:22, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
imdb says "She has a younger sister, Michelle and an older brother, Matthew", but like Wikipedia imdb can be edited by anyone. Does this count as reliable? Here is another source which confirms the information. Think outside the box 17:25, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
IMDB is usually not used as a source for the reasons you stated. I'm not sure about tv-now.com. However, I found a People cite and that's usually strong enough proof for unremarkable claims such as this. Plus, it has a picture, which is always a nice feature in a link. I'll add the info now. We need some criticism

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section.

:Why does every single page on Wikipedia need a "Criticism" section? What do you want to criticise Avril Lavigne for? Do you want a section that looks like: "Criticism: According to some people, Avril Lavigne is inauthentic... etc"

I'd like to revive this discussion. This article is nowhere close to NPOV. Lavigne has generally had a lukewarm reception by critics. There are tons of reviews that indeed describe her as inauthentic, a 'poser' if you will, whit little musical relevance. This article should represent that. --Looskuh (talk) 23:37, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

I don't think a criticism section adds much to the article. Any criticism that is worth noting can be added into the section to which it is most relevant. Having a whole section for it seems like you want to criticize her. D0762 (talk) 08:47, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
Please show me WHERE the article does not fit the NPOV. also, do you think those articles you described as being receptions by critics are written in a NPOV? there is already a long passage about the plagiarism thing what else do you want? like "she was cooler before she got blonde" or what? i cant support that, sorry. --Darth NormaN (talk) 10:27, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

If you have some relevant critics from professionnal reviewers (not from yourself) which are frequent enough to be considered, then be my guest. Just don't start another useless discussion about her being called "punk" by the irresponsible media, or being called a "poser" by some morons who do not see the difference between her real music and some unjustified labels. And besides her music, I don't even know if we have the right to criticize anything. Simply because outside her artistic life, it's none of our business. Charea (talk) 10:42, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Concerning genres

Avril Lavigne works with more genres than pop rock, modern rock and punk pop, she also uses post grunge, teen pop, dance pop, alternative rock, piano rock, power ballad, soft rock, synthpop and rap rock aswell. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Seán Travers (talkcontribs) 15:31, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Movie

So when is this movie shes in coming out? Where are they filming it? Any news? Frequently Frelled (talk) 10:29, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Nothing is known at present other than it is a lead role in an upcoming film. However, the quote from Avril, "something you wouldn't expect from me, something deep and dark" is very similar to another quote from her about 1 year ago, "a dark kind of drama, sort of indie, kind of, but not too indie", when she was supposed to be staring in a movie called "Twist of Fate". Apparently that opportunity fell through. So until this news comes from a more credible source, it's just a rumor. D0762 (talk) 10:40, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

It's vandalism which was added in this edit and reverted here D0762 (talk) 18:25, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Genres

I don't want edit wars,so I think we should discuss this.

Earlier today,I changed the genres to pop and rock, using "aim for generality" as the reason. My edit was reverted saying that the genres aren't subgenres. Well, true, but they are different styles, and aiming for generality also means putting no styles either. So this needs to be discussed. XxJoshuaxX (talk) 20:29, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

Well, I think it's quite clear. alternative rock is a major genre, Scottish alternative rock would not be one. Only having the uppermost genres "pop" and "rock" will not allow the difference to be made that is needed to distinguish between artists. Because I would, for example, never think this article's subject and a band like of Montreal (who do "pop" as well, "indie pop" that is) have anything in common in terms of the genre they are placed in. While I hate to invoke WP:OSE, I think the fact that almost noone who ever edited any artist or album article has done changes like you did, indicates that Template:Infobox Musical artist#Genre does not mean too general. Even the examples used on Template:Infobox Musical artist use things like "alternative rock" instead of "rock". There is more discussion on this template's talk. I think you should take it there or to WPP:MUSIC / WP:MUSICIAN preferably to reach more users because such changes will, as I indicated in my edit summary, affect almost every article about artists, bands, albums or other releases. Otherwise, I think a request for comments would be a good idea. So#Why 20:48, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

Avril is not a guitarist by trade, if she were she would also be a drummer and pianist. As it says in instruments, she can play the guitar, but it is not an occupation like singing and modelling. Rubinoos Settlement

Please read the source more carefully (I'm talking to you D0762) especially the last paragraph:

http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20171904,00.html

"The statement follows the disclosure that a confidential settlement had been reached in the federal lawsuit filed by Dunbar and Gangwer."

It's not surprising that some of you teeny bopper Avril fans try to delude yourself. This is pretty much common knowledge: Dunbar and Gangwer didn't just magically decide to drop their lawsuit and retract their plagiarism charges, they first settled it out of court with a confidential financial award and probably as an attachment to the financial award Dunbar and Gangwer had to release a statement exonerating Avril. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.40.88.86 (talk) 02:21, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

Do you mean this? The source states it was settled confidentially, not that it was settled out of court. I've added the confidential bit back here D0762 (talk) 10:46, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

What is unfortunate about the process that Dunbar and Gangwer went through is that they know the truth of it, and maybe Lavigne knows the truth of it, but the rest of us don't know what happened. Were Dunbar and Gangwer "right"...you know...the way non-legal people use the word, or were they not? No disrespect to Dunbar, Gangwer, or Lavigne, but part of justice is that the community can see and understand for themselves what happened. Not that it's swept under the carpet by lawyers and big business.67.169.126.145 (talk) 07:13, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Genres

I've started this discussion here so hopefully more people will respond, but this concerns all Avril Lavigne related articles, mostly The Best Damn Thing‎, Under My Skin and the other song and album pages. To summarize, several Ips have been adding lots of pseudo genres to the articles, see here, here, here and here. So far these are being reverted, but the Ip then re-adds them and so on. So the question is, should we keep reverting these edits and politely explain on the Ip's talk page? Personally I think that only genres which we can provide a source for should be added, and all others removed as unsourced. Unless we can find a solution this is likely to turn into an edit war. Any thoughts? D0762 (talk) 19:35, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

Yes it's important to have references but they are often difficult to find! Who added pop and garage rock? She isn't either of these genres, I am really annoyed now as I wrote out what I think all of her songs genres should be and then the stupid mouse on my laptop automatically clicked the copyright link at the bottom of the editing page and deleted all the writing I had done. I think for Let Go should be pop rock, punk pop, power pop, teen pop, power ballad, alternative rock and soft rock. Under My Skin should be alternative rock, pop rock, punk pop, teen pop and power pop. The Best Damn Thing should be pop rock, punk pop, dance pop, power ballad, teen pop and piano rock. I'll give my reasons for these genres on the discussion page of the individual single articles.--Seán Travers (talk) 12:01, 1 July 2008 (UTC)Seán Travers

References are certainly difficult to find, especially for song genres, but I think they are must for this. Otherwise anyone can add what they think the genres might be, and people will be adding and changing as fast as they can think of them. For example, I could claim that Avril is folktronica, and that would almost certainly be contested, but without sources backing up the current genres, what right has anyone to say my revision is any less valid that someone else's? So I'll try to find some reliable sources for her main genres, and we establish here via consensus what they should be. Also, I think a distinction should be made between genre and style. Rock is a genre, but Teen Pop, Power ballad, Pop rock and Soft rock are styles. The main articles should only list the main genres, while more specific such as Power Pop, power ballad, dance pop, Teen Pop, soft rock and piano rock should go into the song articles they relate to, not the album articles, in the same way that the all encompassing genres of the albums should not be listed in the individual songs. For example (this is just a preliminarily list, please add and change as need):
And then for the individual songs more specific:
  • Girlfriend - Pop Rock, teen pop, pop, power pop
  • Keep Holding On - Pop rock, soft rock
  • When You're Gone - Power Ballad, pop rock, soft rock
and so on. BTW Seán, what browser are you using? In mine clicking back keeps my writing. D0762 (talk) 16:41, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

yeah ok, that look ok, so are we going to have a vote or something?? wot if there are not sources for it? 79.76.145.101 (talk) 20:16, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Hey there I'm gonna talk about what genres I think should be used for each of her individual songs and I'll give a reason why, if any of you have a problem with these genres please tell me why:

  • Complicated should be:
    • Pop Rock because it uses rock instruments such as guitars and drums but has poppy catchy lyrics.
    • Teen Pop because of the catchy, angst filled lyrics that deal with teen issues such as false image.
    • I do not think this song should be combined with punk pop as I find the song's sound is too mid-tempo and not aggressive enough to be punk pop.
  • Sk8er Boi should be:
    • Punk Pop because of its aggressive rebellious lyrics which use rock instruments with a catchy commercially friendly chorus.
    • Power Pop because of the fast paced recognisable guitar riffs with a catchy lyrics.
    • Teen Pop because of its simple, catchy lyrics.
  • I'm With You should be:
    • Power Ballad because it is a slow rock song with powerful vocals.
    • Soft Rock because of the easy listening toned down instruments in the background.
  • Losing Grip should be:
    • Alternative Rock because of the rock instruments combined with electronicaly enhanced vocals and music.
    • I do not think this song should be coupled with pop rock as it has a heavier sound and did not have much commercial success in other countries.
  • Mobile is pop rock for the same reasons "Complicated" is pop rock but I don't thin it should be teen pop!
  • I also think this song is folk rock as it has it is influenced by traditional music and is combined with rock--Seán Travers (talk) 13:37, 2 July 2008 (UTC)Seán Travers
  • Nobody's Home should be:
    • Pop Rock and Alternative Rock because of the combination of pop and rock and the reason it's alternatve rock is because of it's punk influence as alternative rock derives from punk music.
  • He Wasn't should be:
    • Punk Pop because of the combination of rock and pop and the aggressive rebelious lyrics.
    • Power Pop because of the recognisable guitar riffs.
    • Teen Pop because of teen issues such as being bored and having to clean your room!
  • [[Fall To Pieces should be:

I agree with most of that, but we still need sources for them, like a web link or something for each one ;) D0762 (talk) 14:17, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

It is a laughable comment and we so often see it when people say she is wannabe Punk, when in fact she wants not to be punk and strenuously denies being punk. As for Under My Skin being Teen Pop, The Best Damn Thing is much more Teen Pop than Under My Skin. And also, I don't see how Girlfriend can possibly be considered to be Power Pop. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Avril rulez (talkcontribs) 11:31, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Avril Lavigne's vampire teeth

Should it be mentioned that Avie is having her vampire fangs removed? It's in all the news [14] [15] [16] [17] [18] so it's reliable, verifiable and notable. Personally I've always liked them, but apparently she "hates her fangs. She is planning on having them filed down by a cosmetic dentist. It's just something she has always been insecure about, especially since everyone is staring at her mouth when she sings." Shame, as she would have made a great actor in horror flicks. Nessie17 (talk) 15:14, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

No. This is no more notable than which hair products she uses or if she cuts her fingernails. The sources are not very reliable anyway, and as she hasn't had the work done yet this is little more than a rumor. At the very best it might warrant one sentence in the Personal life section if she does have it done. Ғїяеѕкатеяtalk 15:37, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

It doesn't deserve any mention - it is entirely rumour and will almost certainly not come to pass; after all, if she was so insecure about them, she would've had them removed years ago. Abbey Dawn

Could someone please update the "Abbey Dawn" section? A lot of things need to be mentioned:

  • It has already been launched in the US, a little over a month ago, and includes juniors' apparel and jewelry.
  • The line is currently featured in the fashion-based browser game Stardoll.
  • According to this, Abbey Dawn is being sold in Japan and has an independent shop, though it is not clear whether or not it's an official shop.
  • I'm not sure if this is remotely significant, but Lavigne wore some of the clothes in her line at her concerts before the line was launched, perhaps as means of promotion.

I also think it should be discussed with more detail in an article of its own. { Zh! } (talk) 16:35, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Abbey Dawn is a clothing line produced by Kohl's and designed by Avril Lavigne.[6] It was launched in the US in Alhambra, Calif in July 2008. [7][8] Named after Avril’s childhood nickname [8], the line is described by Kohl’s as a "juniors lifestyle brand",[9] and includes apparel and jewelry with skull and zebra patterns similar to the artwork on Lavigne's album The Best Damn Thing.[10] Lavigne wore some of the clothes in her line at various concerts before the launch, and it is also featured on the internet game Stardoll where figures can be dressed up as Avril Lavigne.[11]
Whoever adds this should copy the source of this page to keep the references intact. JessicaThunderbolt 18:03, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

everything back but you spam

Theres this dude, Damn ran, who's claiming that Avril's next official single will be "everything back but you". therefor he made several articles: here, here and here (maybe even more.. dont know), also editing related articles to link to them (so watch out! ;). Imo those shouldn't exist, plus he gave no references or source for that claim.

Would be nice if someone could put those articles on the delete list since I'm too busy to do that today, thanks in advance. --Darth NormaN (talk) 11:41, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Well, this dude must be right because about three minutes ago I was watching the Everything Back But You music video. It was a song on The Best Damn Thing albulm. If you don't beileive me you can search it yourself on Youtube. Oh, and sorry to sort of butt in to your conversation but I just wanted to tell you that. Rumors Of New Albulm

I have no idea about this, but I've been hearing rumors that there was going to be a new albulm. I was going to put some info up about that, but I didn't want to put any false info in the article. Does anybody know if that rumor is true?--Avrilfan11 (talk) 02:37, 1 October 2008 (UTC)avrilfan11

Question...?

Ok, she did claim to be punk before, but now she say she's not, and trust me, she's far from, so why does the wiki page say that she is? pop-punk is an oxymoron. You can't be against mainstream and willing in the center of it at the same time. I'm not trying to 'grave dig' the whole punk - not punk... debate. I'm simply asking why the facts are she says she's not punk and never was, but the article says she is today.... shouldn't someone update it? rather or not she was in the past, let history argue that one, but now today, you can't call her punk because she's not. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.211.183.103 (talk) 22:33, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Genres???

What's wrong in the article that appears without the genres? even in the albums! (Gas3191 (talk) 23:54, 11 October 2008 (UTC))

Have a read of Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Music#Time_to_remove_genre_section_on_info_box.3F and the discussions further down the page. Genre fields have recently been removed from the artist and album infoboxes for the reasons stated. It doesn't seem to be a particularly popular change, so I guess that it might be reversed at some point in the near future. Or maybe not. --Kurt Shaped Box (talk) 02:38, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

'recently said'

It was stated in the article that Avril 'recently said' to the London Post that she would be appearing in a movie. "Recently" in this case is June 2008, though the line itself gives no context. I recommend changing the line to "recently (June 2008)..." --99.250.177.248 (talk) 01:19, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Label

Today I just looked around the web when I noticed something strange: Avril does not appear on the UK site of RCA; even though her artist page still exist ([20]) she's no longer on the artists list ([21]) or in the artist browser ([22]).

Instead she appears on Columbia Records: artist page, artists list, artist browser

Has Avril a record contract with Columbia instead of RCA in the UK or has she changed her label again?

There is no info about any album called "The Softer Side" at official sites (official site, MySpace, fan sites). Yeah I noticed that too. What's with just listing pop and rock as genres, without a proper reason? Other bands and artists have sub-genres listed. It's the same for her albums too. That's true... every-time the same thing, I just tried to fix the problem adding to Pop and Rock music, the style/subgenre that avril is, in parenthesis, and even doing it the problems still continues. --Gas3191 (talk) 23:16, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

lol I love the new photo, scary yet funny at the same time, thanks! Discoh8er (talk) 09:19, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Its not that its taken over. Its against the policy. The problem here is that some editors are adding subgenres and styles. These are discouraged because those are mere opinions of websites and per WP:MOS, the genres should be general. Lavigne is under rock and pop. That's clear. --Efe (talk) 12:05, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Is it against the policy for Sum 41 to have Pop punk, punk rock, alternative rock, alternative metal listed as genres? Bands and artists change their style all the time and will do sub-genres, and I feel it is important for people to know this. Discoh8er (talk) 12:39, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

The article Sum 41 has nothing to do with this one. Please see this: Template:Infobox_musical_artist#Genre. --Efe (talk) 12:44, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Discoh8er was only pointing out that bands like Sum 41 have subgenres listed and nobody objects to that, yet you Efe seem to object to subgenres being listed for Avril.
Please Efe if your problem is this why dont you go editing other musicians and bands as well? I don't see the problem to add to the genre a section of style of music! It helps to people who wants to know it! Also I watched the Template you shared with us, and if you can see the section of genres in examples which give it of Audioslave and Mariah Carey, there is added styles such as post-grunge and alt-rock (in the case of audioslave).... and mariah carey has dance-pop... so what's the problem? --Gas3191 (talk) 18:07, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Anyone else wanna comment on this? Discoh8er (talk) 23:01, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

As I have said, please read Template:Infobox_musical_artist#Genre. Those subgenres, styles, and her influences could be discusses in a section called musical style. --Efe (talk) 02:05, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

So, why in Infobox musical artist's template I found this

For individual musicians

The following template code produced the infobox at the top of the page.
{{Infobox Musical artist <!-- See Wikipedia:WikiProject_Musicians -->

For groups or bands

The following template code produced the infobox at the top of the page.
{{Infobox musical artist <!-- See Wikipedia:WikiProject Musicians -->

If they promote to put in order the genre section, why on the same example there is style/sub-genre ? ... C'mon is better adding the subgenre, people want to know only what style are all those artist/bands ... they will know if is pop, rock, hip hop, etc etc looking at the style (if the genre it's not added) --Gas3191 (talk) 02:38, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

As I have said, those article have nothing to do with Lavigne's. --Efe (talk) 02:58, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

So why are you objecting to subgenres being listed for Avril, yet you don't mind other bands having them listed? Removing sub genres and styles will annoy fans. Try changing Heavy Metal to simply Rock on Black Sabbath's page and watch how many of their fans go up in arms. Discoh8er (talk) 11:03, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

This article is not for fans. This is for everybody. If they don't agree, its not our problem. We have guidelines and policies. I have provided the links already and provided alternatives how and where to add those subgenres and styles. --Efe (talk) 23:48, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

but why are you not doing the same to other bands and singers for? why is lavigne not allowed to have subgenres listed yet audioslave do? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.10.67.35 (talk) 00:26, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

It does not mean that if I change Lavigne's article, I will also change others. They have their editors there. Its just that I edit this one and changes were based on guidelines. --Efe (talk) 11:45, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

nobody seems to be following "guidelines" on other articles. As Discoh8er said, try changing heavy metal to simply rock on Black Sabbath's page and people will swiftly change it back, even though it follows "guidelines". besides if wikipedia's "guidelines" meant anything then the examples they have would not show subgenres. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.22.160.102 (talk) 02:42, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Please see this edit. That makes my comments sensible. --Efe (talk) 06:09, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

You still havn't answered our questions. Why are you not doing this for other bands? If it was against Wikipedia's "guidelines" then surely Wikipedia would be deleting subgenres from other bands pages. I'm not wasting anymore time on this. Efe has obviously claimed the article as their own and has ruined it beyond recognition, without giving a PROPER reason for doing so. GNRDemocrazy was right, real music fans don't use Wikipedia, now I know why. Discoh8er (talk) 11:59, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

What the hell!!! You are not helping on this Efe, as Discoh8er said, you claimed all the whole article as your own, not only the genre section, also the style where it can be putted the style/subgenre we are disputing... also why do you delete post-grunge from her style??? if there is a lot of reference. I'm really sick of all of this --Gas3191 (talk) 08:45, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
If you are concerned about the other article, go over there and tell them that its against the guideline.
Another point, we must not add details of her music in the lead and infobox. Only the general genre (per guideline) and because the lead must summarize the entire article. The details go on the section called style. Please be careful when adding because those are mere opinions of the sites and thus must be written in accordance with WP:NPOV. --Efe (talk) 08:48, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
Please stop adding the subgenres in the lead. Only the general genres because its the lead and MUST SUMMARIZE THE ENTIRE ARTICLE. Thank you. --Efe (talk) 08:56, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
Whibley must not be listed as her associated act just because he played in Lavigne's album. Please see Template:Infobox_musical_artist#Associated_acts. --Efe (talk) 09:07, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
Then who exactly is allowed to be named in the assiciated acts section by the way? Why remove Lil mama? She did do a duet with her for god sake! Sorry Efe but you have ruined this article by claiming it as your own. Discoh8er (talk) 09:33, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
Template:Infobox_musical_artist#Associated_acts states that
The following uses of this field should be avoided:
  • Association of groups with members' solo careers
  • Groups with only one member in common
  • Association of producers, managers, etc. (who are themselves acts) with other acts (unless the act essentially belongs to the producer, as in the case of a studio orchestra formed by and working exclusively with a producer)
  • One-time collaboration for a single, or on a single song
  • Groups that are merely similar
So, Efe is indeed correct that most of the currently-listed associated acts are incorrect, per the guidelines. Evan Taubenfeld should probably be listed, however. --Kurt Shaped Box (talk) 10:19, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
Well then I've no objection to Taubenfeld being listed. Efe however might think differently Discoh8er (talk) 11:02, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
Okay i'm going to try and help this get figured out, although i do admit i wandered off with the fairies about half way down the section here, too much moaning and complaining for my liking. First off; Wikipedia:Other stuff exists. "editors will inevitably point to similarities across the project as reasons to keep, delete, or create a particular article or policy. Sometimes these comparisons are invalid, and sometimes they are valid." - in this case, they are plain and simply, not valid. Wikipedia went through a big hoo-har about the removal of genres from infoboxes a few months back, for this exact reason, people moaning and whining about 'their' band/artist being miscategorised, please don't continue this into a massive discussion, chill and find some consensus or compromise.
Efe correctly notioned you to visit Template:Infobox Musical artist, you have gone directly to the samples, not the policies. It clearly states "Aim for generality", in Lavigne's case, she is primarily a pop singer, for anything else, it should be cited with reliable sources. These further genres are preferably placed in the style section, unless they are prominent within multiple sources - (eg. allmusic saying she has a heavy metal chord in a specific song would not constitute adding heavy metal). I might also mention, MySpace pages shouldn't be used to voice 'her' opinion (in the style section). And who are you guys to accuse WP users of not being real music fans, you're claiming to be fans of Avril Lavigne! :P Capiche?! k-i-a-c (hitmeup - the past) 12:06, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Rules are rules

It's time to become more serious about the matter. Rules are rules, and must me obeyed, personal feelings aside.

  1. First, styles and sub-genres are not to be used in the infobox i.e. general genres ONLY.
  2. Try to avoid listing fusion genres if they are repetitious (i.e. if you have "pop, rock, pop rock", then the last one becomes redundant). Right now, all that's needed in this article are pop, rock, and punk. Styles like power pop (a mixture of pop and rock) and pop punk (a mixture of pop, punk, alternative rock and power pop) and pop rock are all redundant and repetitive. They are not needed.
  3. Only sourced content must appear in the infoboxes. However, that doesn't mean that every sourced entry should be crammed into the info box. Since sources have a way of blurring the line between styles and genres, we need to follow rule number one to reduce redundancy.
  4. And just to remind editors, failure to adhere to rules and excessive reversion of the article may result in the article being protected from everyone until people can work out their frustrations here.

I'll refrain for editing the article to change content, and will remain as mediator. Orane (talk) 19:54, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks to kurt, kiac, and orane for the clear explanation. I am sorry for using an IP. I will not be editing until after the Holy Week. PS, her being punk is even "disputed" (following the release of Let Go), and punk is a subgenre of rock. --121.1.30.98 (talk) 04:09, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Non-English

The non-English Avril sung (as opposed to non-Avril covers) versions of her songs should be listed clearly. 70.29.213.241 (talk) 12:33, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

  • She is not! PUNK ROCK,POST GRUNGE,and Rock,

she is Only POP ROCK,Pop,and pop Punk.

  • Instruments she playing: rhythm guitar and vocals,

but electric Guitar, piano, drums, acoustic guitar.. NOT,she not playing "SOLO" guitar,drums....

  • Avril lavigne is like another myles cyrus, she is not a kt tunstall, or alanis morissette —Preceding unsigned comment added by Albertrocker (talkcontribs) 00:49, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

If she plays rythm guitar, she plays it with an acoustic and an electric guitar, she can play the piano, you should check out some videos of her playing piano.

She has some songs with post-grunge oriented sound in a pop-rock format, She has been compared with Alanis Morissette's albums like Jagged Little Pill and Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie (albums which have post-grunge influences), because sounds similar with its, also there are musicians with post-grunge influences such as Raine Maida (Our Lady Peace, Butch Walker (Marvelous 3), Ben Moody (Evanescence) , and have been working on lavigne's album (as a producer, composer, etc) and that's one of the reason that she has had some post-grunge sounds .
However if you check out the definition of Punk-Pop music on allmusic.com (*press here*, is the complete explanation) you will find the following explanation

'Punk-Pop is a post-grunge strand of alternative rock that combines power-pop melodies and chord changes with speedy punk tempos and loud guitars.'

So ... avril is pop-punk, and pop punk it's practically a mix of power pop and post-grunge, maybe here we find a why for her 'post-grunge' influence.
Other point are the reviews and stuff which say that avril has that influence on her music.
Here is some good references where you can check it.

well that's why she is it, and also I can hear it, in some songs of her =) --200.93.18.193 (talk) 05:30, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

If you were to add them genres and them sources, they would just be deleted by some biased wikipedia member. The genres should say Rock and Pop-Punk Discoh8er (talk) 11:00, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

I am a big Avril Lavigne fan and I was wondering when her next album is comeing out does anybody know?Is she going to do a duet with anyone? Also I heard she is haveing mariage probloms is that true? And did the Jonas Brothers go on tour with Her?--Sweetheart2009 (talk) 21:55, 29 April 2009 (UTC)sweetheart2009

probably this year, dont know, dont think so, who cares about the jonas brothers anyway? -Darth NormaN (talk) 22:05, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
Even if she is having marriage problems, that should be her business.--Maaladeisia (talk) 03:46, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
First the easiest answer: Yes, the Jonas Brothers have been on tour with her, but only in Europe.
Mariage problems have not yet been confirmed. People are speculating, but there is nothing official.
As she has stated by herself, the fourth album will release during this year. But she will also be featured on the new albums by Lil Wayne and Justin Timberlake whose album releases end of 2009 or January 2010 and is said to release the same time. --Oli (talk) 12:49, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
wait a minute...the Justin Timberlake collaboration is still to be confirmed, there's no official source --Smanu (talk) 14:59, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

It has been confirmed in an interview with Elle Magazine that Avril Lavigne is working on her fourth album which is set for a November 2009 release: http//www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/00025420.html It is not allowing me to use this as a source b/c it says its spam. It seems reliable and I think it should be posted. User:Alextwa--7/6/09 —Preceding undated comment added 19:47, 6 July 2009 (UTC).

Her album comes out on November 17, 2009 and no tracks are known as of now. A single will be out within the next month or 2, and Avril has stated that the album is very similar to her first two records and not her third. There will be 2 or 3 songs like her 3rd and then a lot of mellow, acoustic songs. No back-up dancers on the tour and not in concert arenas either. She will perform in theaters. I got this from Billboard.com under the News section. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Solotwilight (talkcontribs) 17:02, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

'Lavigne has commented on the new album stating that it will be very different than any of her albums, and although a few songs will be like her third album, most of the songs will be like her first two albums.' This Doesn't Make Sense :S How Can It Be Very Different Yet The Same As The Other Albums? :P

IDK, I just read the article. I made that edit but typed what was off the website wrong. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.231.85.144 (talk) 01:43, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

"The first single is speculated to be released during August or September of 2009." — since when is a message board a viable source of information? The message board link can't itself be identified without registration. A Google search though reveals the original source to be Billboard.com's Twitter page. The corresponding link to the above phrase should be changed to that site: http://twitter.com/billboardmusic/. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Keraunoscopia (talkcontribs) 22:23, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Merger proposal

Hey everyone, I want to suggest mergin the Black Star (fragrance) article (Avril's upcomming fragrance) into this article. Why? Well the black star article is small and consists of only few facts. Since this article already lists information about Black Star it would be no problem to move the picture and some of the references to this article. What do you think? --Darth NormaN (talk) 17:57, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

  • Support. If it gets significant coverage on its own after the release, it can be spun back out. Fences and windows (talk) 03:00, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Avril Lavigne Is From Napanee Not Bellville

I have a source which clearly states she is from Napanee and not Bellville, Ontario.[23] So I am going to change that in the article since there are no sources for Bellville. Plus it has been said many, many times in various interviews, TV appearances, etc. that she is from Napanee. Bellville has never been mentioned. Mr. C.C. (talk) 05:55, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

I have conflicting information. IMDB says she was born in Bellville, while the first link I posted said Napanee.[24] Can someone clarify this? Mr. C.C. (talk) 06:04, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
She was born in Bellville, then moved to Napanee where she grew up. --Darth NormaN (talk) 11:46, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

Fake Filmography Info...

I'm not sure which jokster posted this, but on the filmography section, it says Avril was the voice of Rabbit in the Piglet Movie, and that's not true by any means. It's very absurd to even have there, and there's a lock on the page so no one can edit it off, but some friends of mine have emailed me asking if her new movie--supposedly named "Twist of Fate"--never exsisted, and instead she was going to make it publically known that maybe she'd down more voice-over work and it was for the Piglet movie (my friends aren't advid fans of hers, and I am, so I knew better...plus, I've seen the movie). I just think someone should contact Wikipedia somehow, because obviously whichever genius they have editing the pages and correcting them doesn't know how to proofread... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rockrebel219 (talkcontribs) 07:02, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

yeah i wasnt sure about this one but avril voicing a male rabbit? hm.. anyway, i removed it --Darth NormaN (talk) 08:45, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Misuse of English.

In the Musical Career - Best Damn Thing Section :-

Lavigne's third album, The Best Damn Thing, was released on April 17, 2007. Lavigne went into a small tour to promote The Best Damn Thing. The album's lead single, "Girlfriend", topped the Billboard Hot 100, the week The Best Damn Thing debuted at number one on the Billboard

'went into' may i suggest it is changed to 'undertook', or even a simple 'did'

Schroeder

I am an Avril fan, and I have a funny story about this girl that someone tried to set me up with, that looks like Avril. Someone saw something I wrote on computer, and followed me all the way from Atl. to Florida, but I never found out exactly what they were doing. It reminded me of a film like SWF. 'Crash & Burn'

A document that was leaked from Sony BMG apparently names the album as 'Crash & Burn'. It also features the full tracklisting. http://i34.tinypic.com/312vfiw.jpg —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.91.51.37 (talk) 10:36, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

I personally find that pretty interesting, but in terms of Wikipedia, I'm not sure that holds up to standards of verifiability. – Kerαunoςcopia 14:38, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

Controversy

Its just my opinion but I think the controversy section is a little to long. I think we could shorten the part about the lawsuit and just say it was later dropped. The part on the comment by her fellow songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk could by shortened a little bit also too. The section is kind of tabloid like to a certain degree. Any thoughts? --Alextwa (talk) 15:46, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

Musical style and public image section in the article

Every band is being added in the "inspired by/inspiration to" paragraphs, whether cited or not. This listing of bands and musicians is neither professional nor very encyclopedic. I did not remove the paragraphs entirely though, because I feel at some point someone should come along and really clean this section up, perhaps citing a few musicians who've inspired Avril and why they have inspired her, rather than merely being listed for the purpose of article filler. – Kerαunoςcopia 08:03, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

Serious overhaul needed.

This is an absolutely atrocious article; it looks like 7-year-old fans wrote it. I spent over 20 minutes just fixing the errors for one paragraph.
