Opening paragraph

I removed the superfluous info about the venue's amenities from the first paragraph because while someone planning to attend the AO might be pleased, that information belongs with the facilities' article. I removed the paragraph break following so that essential Who/What/Where/When/etc. all fell in the 1st para, but now it is a bit busy with secondary info. Perhaps when this is expanded, some can be moved down-article? 24.6.2.72 16:03, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

I changed the Google Maps link to a broader view, as the previous link showed only "We are sorry, we don't have imagery at this zoom level for this region" tiles. Cactus Wren 16:15, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Prizemoney ?

IS there any info on prizemoney ?? The Wimbledon Championships has a list of current prizes for each category. --Rulesfan 03:49, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

It's currently wrong, shows USD but source shows same amount in AUD, Wimbledon, US and French shows total prize money, this just shows Winners prize money, anyone got an up to date source? BigTurnip (talk) 15:25, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Value of open to Australian economy

The event is worth around £38 million to the Australian economy.[3]

This takes a figure from the references, however it is inappropriate to quote such values in foreign currency units. What is the value in Australian dollars? Can an alternative reference be found that provides a figure in AUD? -- B.D.Mills  (T, C) 10:04, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Pity it isn't still the Australasian Open

What is the reason it was considered a 'Grand Slam' Tournament in the first place? What was a Grand Slam was set by what countries had won the Davis Cup up until the late 20's. They were the US, France, Great Britain and Australasia (New Zealand and Australia combined). The event was actually held in New Zealand twice 1906 & 1912. Anthony Wilding (a New Zealander) was a big part of those Davis Cup wins for Australasia.

Hence, my logic is

1/ It got GrandSlam status because of the Australasian Davis Cup wins 2/ Hence it should belong to Australasia still. (The 1906 & 1912 events being held in NZ give evidence to its shared historical ownership). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tmartin prof (talkcontribs) 22:59, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

Also, why is the venue displayed as Ghangzhou, China? The page for 'Grand Slam (Tennis)' declares the first grand slam of the year as the Chinese Open! Through the article no reference to these changes can be found! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Anand.rkrishnan (talkcontribs) 07:11, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Irrelevant Info on Grand Slam

I decided to remove this information, which while correct and of appropriate quality, is irrelevant in this article, or at least definitely did not belong immediately following the introduction.

"Traditionally, accomplishing a Grand Slam in a calendar year; tennis fans have adopted the shorthand of referring to each of the four parts of the Slam (Australian, French, Wimbledon and US Opens) as a slam in itself. The Australian Rod Laver was the last man to complete a Grand Slam in men's singles in 1969. On the women's side, Steffi Graf was the last woman to win a Grand Slam in 1988, and she also won the Olympic Gold in Seoul in the same year, making it a Golden Slam." RedClaw42 02:13, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

I know this entry is old, but although it says the content was irrelevant, the first sentence would explain the use of the word slam in exactly the way described in the third paragraph of the lead. I'm tempted to put it back (in a slightly tidier way). HiLo48 (talk) 09:55, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Winners list

There should be some kind of reference to the junior champions on the main page. Or they could get a page of their own like the adult winners. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Australian_Open_champions#Juniors 152.17.127.4 (talk) 07:23, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

The list of winners makes the page too long. A separate page called Australian Open Champions can be created. This has been done for the Wimbledon page.

Prizemoney - Question

It isn't clear to me reading the "Trophies and Prize Money" chapter, if the prizes are cumulative. For example, if a player gets to 2nd round, do they get the second round prize, or do the get the first round plus second round prize? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.241.91.114 (talk) 08:30, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

Ranking points?

Can someone list how many points you get for winning the open? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.181.21.73 (talk) 13:22, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

Strange we never added it. Currently it is worth 2000 points to the winner for both the WTA and ATP. Fyunck(click) (talk) 17:59, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
Done It was such a good question that I added a chart to all 4 Major pages with links to the appropriate wikipedia WTA and ATP points pages. Fyunck(click) (talk) 19:15, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

First, I have to take my hat off to the editors who maintain all the detailed results pages for these tennis tournaments. It's tremendous stuff, and always seems up to date while a tournament is in progress. But on this main page, I wondered if greater prominence could/should be given to the links to historical per-year articles where all the results can be found (2011 Australian Open, 2010 Australian Open, 2009 Australian Open, etc.). At the moment there is an oddly presented subset of links under "Recent attendances" (I say "oddly presented" because one wouldn't particularly be looking for these links under the heading of such a specific topic). In fact, the full list is right down at the bottom of the page in the "Australian Open" navbox. I suppose this is reasonable and proper, but somehow they seem a bit lost to me. Should we have a section for these links in the main body of the article, rather than just including a few of them incidentally in a section about attendances? 86.181.206.213 (talk) 03:14, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Attendance

Can't wait for the last part of the intro to be updated with this year's record attendances! I'm also compiling a table of daily attendance numbers - had to build the table based on the Washington Post "Australian Open at a Glance" for each day... but this will drop into the 2012 Australian Open page, not here... Australian Open Series Article Merged in

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
The result of this discussion was not to merge. Plus the original merge-proposer agreed. This closing is being done by an involved editor. Fyunck(click) (talk) 21:56, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

I am suggesting the Australian Open Series article be merged into the overall Australian Open article as a section or sub-section. I am suggesting that the new section will be simplified though by removing all results of the Australian Open Series and just leave it as an introduction and list of current tournaments in the Series. The current Australian Open Series article is out of date as no one has been updating the results, and doesn't provide much detail that isn't available on the individual articles. --TinTin (talk) 03:09, 12 January 2016 (UTC)

  • Oppose. Not denying that the article absolutely needs to be updated, including especially if this series as designated by Tennis Australia is still so designated, but that does not diminish its notability, as notability is not temporary. As such, it seems that this article is sufficiently notable for a separate article, just as the US Open Series has a separate article. oknazevad (talk) 04:40, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
  • Oppose. I agree with Oknazevad and to be honest I had overlooked that article (been busy updating Darts articles but it is important enough to stand alone, I would also suggest you list your suggestion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tennis if you want more feedback.--Navops47 (talk) 09:32, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
  • Comment - it is now up to date, and yes this series is still viable per the official website. Fyunck(click) (talk) 11:25, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
    • Thank you sir! So, with that said, any objections to removing the merge tags? oknazevad (talk) 00:09, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
Since this was started just today...maybe give it a couple days for others to weigh in. Then we could properly close this and remove the tag. We're in no hurry. Fyunck(click) (talk) 00:30, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
  • Can't argue with patience. oknazevad (talk) 02:17, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
  • Oppose. Agree with above replies, the series is notable enough for its own page. The US Open Series also came to mind right away. DJB3.14 (talk) 19:06, 16 January 2016 (UTC)
      • Thanks for all the feedback. I am happy for my suggested merge to be removed. --TinTin (talk) 21:48, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

Seems like an advertisement

Seems fair to mention the sponsor, but this seems like an advertisement. But since I'm not properly an editor, I thought I'd just mention it for someone with more experience to adjust to the rest of the entry.

Chinese Sponsor, Global Flavor In 2019, Luzhou Laojiao, a Chinese liquor brand, signed an agreement to become the largest Chinese sponsor in the history of the Australian open.As the first baijiu brand to cooperate with a grand slam event, Luzhou Laojiao · Guojiao 1573 will further enrich the diversity of the Australian open food experience, and at the same time will spread China's unique baijiu etiquette and culture to the Australian open fans around the world through the Australian open. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.158.188.76 (talk) 07:04, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

First tennis players who came by boats

The assertion in the discussion that this first occurred in 1946 is ridiculous - players travelled internationally from the beginning and within the first eight years players from four countries had won the Men's singles. Compare this to Wimbeldon and the US Open when the first foreigner to win the competition took 31 and 23 years respectively. You don't see on their sites discussion about the challenges to get there which was a factor including for people from the Southern Hemisphere but that appears to be a non-issue for those who write such nonsense. Antipodenz (talk) 03:28, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

Anthony Wilding - almost did not play this tournament

This is a ridiculous assertion made without reference to Wildings intentions/schedule and despite the fact, notwithstanding he was based in Europe, he (determinedly) returned to Austiralia and New Zealand with the clear timing and intentions (so realised) to enter tennis tournaments in both countries, including clearly that of the Australasian Open. This reads as desperate stuff by someone/people? with a regrettable and desperate agenda; sure travel to Australasia had its challenges but was undertaken by individuals and teams, such as the US Davis cup team, pre World War One. While the travel factor is an issue I don't see the same, indeed any, effort discussing this for the other opens but it was a factor for them all in different ways over the years, including clearly (in fact if not the minds of some) the challenge players from the Southern Hemisphere had in attending a range of tournaments; if the author/s wanted to be even-handed there would be such reference but it's absence highlights their bias. Antipodenz (talk) 03:54, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

Players who never played the Australian Open

The author starts listing five of the notable players of late 19th and early 20th century to help make their case of the difficulty in travel to the Australian Open (subtext - it was a less worthy major). Of these Reginald Doherty had almost ceased competitive singles play after 1902 (from what I can tell he didn't play in this event at Wimbeldon after 1901) and his brother Laurence had given up tennis to play golf in 1906, so for them not attending a tournament being first played late in the year 1905 its hardly a surprise and provides no evidence to support the claim in reference to them. The next three named (US players Larned, McLaughlin and Wright) did travel to Australasia in 1911/12 and were all beaten in the Davis Cup (4-0) match notwithstanding the absence of the leading player Wilding, so they could travel if they wished, and did, and learned that the opposition in Australasia was quite up to what it was elsewhere. The championship winners of the Australasian Championships were to foot it with the best opposition across the world over the decades from the very beginning of the championship and showed that travel was possible to achieve that; if a bunch of primarily European and North American players chose not to do the same in reverse than that is their call reflecting on them, not the Championship. Antipodenz (talk) 04:29, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

AO Events

This site lacks relevant coverage of the events that are part of the AO. These include the junior and wheelchair tournaments. They should feature in the discussion of the development of the AO (e.g. years at which they were incorporated into the tournament) and the championship winners should feature in the relevant sections, including in the table on the right. I note that coverage for such athletes is generally poor across such sites but it is changing (and overdue) and I note the significant and equal prominence the official US Open site gave to all championship winners in their wrap up for the 2021 tournament.
