Declaration of COI and request for edits edit

Hi. I am declaring here, as well as on my user page that I work for Atotech. It is my understanding that Wikipedia policy disallows users from editing articles in which they have a vested interest, so therefore I am stating my interest. The page is in dire need of updating and improvements, and I hope, with your help, to create an article that is useful for readers interested in learning about the company. I have observed other COI editors and how they interact with Wikipedia and have noticed that sometimes they make edits on their own, and sometimes they request edits be made by other users on their behalf. I wonder if you can clarify when it is appropriate to make an edit on my own, and when it is better to request an edit. Thank you. Below I would like to request my first edit: AtotechUser (talk) 11:17, 29 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

WP:COIU gives a listing of which types of edits are considered uncontroversial and would therefore not meet resistance to being made by COI editors. Regards,  Spintendo  08:38, 30 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Requested edit edit

We would like to see a new section called "Corporate structure" added to the article after the History section and before the Products section with the following content:

  • Corporate structure

The company is composed of two main business units: Electronics and General Metal Finishing. Of the over 3,800 employees, approximately 56% are in Asia; 35% are in Europe; and 9% are in the Americas. [1]

Atotech operates in more than 40 countries including Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, South Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, India, Singapore, Canada, Brazil and the USA. [2] It runs 17 TechCenters, 14 chemical production plants and 2 equipment production sites. [3]

In March 2017, Geoff Wild was appointed as CEO[4] of Atotech. The company’s CFO[5] is Peter Frauenknecht. John Stephenson heads the operations of the Group as COO. [6] — Preceding unsigned comment added by AtotechUser (talkcontribs) 11:43, 29 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Requested edit edit

Please create a new section after the History section and before the Products section:

  • Sustainability and green technology

The company is committed to sustainability through a self-imposed adherence to stricter standards than required by law to protect the environment, users and production workers. The company also offers customers environmentally friendly products which may help them improve their sustainability profile. Atotech published its first Green Development Roadmap in 2010.[1] By 2018 there were less than 5% toxic substances in their chemical products. Some 38% of R&D projects are dedicated to sustainable goals.[2] AnnaAtAtotech (talk) 19:48, 2 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

  1. The company's commitment to sustainability describes an ideology or company-mindset — both of which may be noble causes, but which are ultimately not germane to the article.
  2. The company's environmentally friendly products are not listed individually with independent references attesting to their level of friendly-ness to the environment. Without these sources the proposed description of these products as being environmentally friendly has been phrased using Wikipedia's voice, which cannot be the case.
  3. The "less than 5%" goal mentioned as being achieved in 2018 does not state what the pre-goal percentage was.
  4. The 38% R&D products "dedicated to sustainable goals" does not mention specifically what it is about those products which makes them dedicated to the company's sustainable goals.

@Spintendo:Thank you so much for putting the time into helping with this page expansion. I definitely see your point here and will take your recommendations/suggestions into consideration--perhaps we can find some information/sources that will support your suggestions so that we can submit this again at a later date, but this time in a way that will be acceptable on Wikipedia. Again, I want you to know we really appreciated your help. AnnaAtAtotech (talk) 15:27, 3 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Requested edit edit

Please add a new section with the following content:

  • Research and development

A high percentage of sales are reinvested in R&D. [1] The company owns over 2,100 patents.[2] Atotech collaborates with major research centers to develop new chemistries and processes to reduce the size of semiconductor devices. [3] The company also supports research in a variety of disciplines. [4]

  1.  N The claim regarding the "high percentage of sales" being reinvested in R&D was not added because it is not known what is meant by the use of the phrase high percentage.
  2.  N The claim regarding the "development of new chemistries and processes to reduce the size of semiconductor devices" was not added because it is not known what is meant by, nor what specifically is entailed with, the use of the word collaborates.
  3.  N The claim regarding the company "supporting research in a variety of disciplines" was not added because it is not known what is meant by, nor what specifically is entailed with, the use of the words supporting and variety.
  4.  Y The claim regarding the patents was added to the lead section.

Edit requests - history section edit

Thank you to the editors who have been helping me up until this point. I have just a few more rounds of edit requests to make and wanted to submit my requests for the history section today. I am looking over and trying to learn from the pushback offered so far from @Spintendo:. Here are my requests for the history section at the moment. Thanks again AnnaAtAtotech (talk) 08:38, 5 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

1. The first sentence of the “History” section is factually incorrect and also confusing. It says "Atotech traces its origins to the pharmaceutical company Schering AG, which was founded in 1851."

Please replace it with the following: "Atotech traces its origins to the “Grüne Apotheke” (“Green Apothecary”) founded in Berlin in 1851 by Ernst Christian Friedrich Schering."[1]

2. The second paragraph currently reads: “In 1901, the electroplating division was launched. It produced salt mixtures for storing metals with the brand name Trisalyt.” Which is ambiguous and doesn’t give context.

Please expand it to read (using the existing source): "In 1901, the electroplating division was launched, producing ready-to-use prepared salts for coating with gold, silver, copper and zinc under the brand name Trisalyt. Until that time, electroplating baths were prepared from chemicals by experts. The ready-to-use Trysalyt salts, which were simply dissolved in water, made the process simpler, making it available to more users."

3. After the second sentence in the history section about the year 1901, I'd like to fill in the large gaps. Please add:

"In 1927 Chemische Fabrik auf Actien (vorm E. Schering) merged with CAF Kahlbaum Chemische Fabrik GmbH to create Schering-Kahlbaum AG."[2]

4. The third paragraph about 1936 in the history section misses one of the key developments of that year.

Please edit to read: "Schering-Kahlbaum AG began manufacturing its own electroplating equipment in 1936. Initially, electroplating focused on improving the electrolytes, but now there were increased demands on the requirements of the equipment. Consequently, Schering worked on aligning the functions of the electrolyte and the equipment.[3] This marked the first steps towards manually operated line equipment, which are still in use today through the computer-operated lines."

5. After the 1936 paragraph please add: "In 1937 the company was renamed Schering AG." [4]

6. Finally, before the paragraph beginning “In 1993” please add: "In 1971 the company opened a 5,000 square meter facility for the manufacture of equipment in Feucht."

Thank you! AnnaAtAtotech (talk) 08:38, 5 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • All proposed claims require references which verify the key elements presented in the prose. Numbers 2 and 4 contain elements which are unreferenced.
  • Number 3 does not include the text as its written in the original German placed under the |quote= parameter from the submitted document.
  • Number 5 and number 6 both state "the company" but do not specify which company this relates to. The COI editor is reminded that on no less than ten different occassions in this edit request, a mention of a company is made by name.[a] In this complex mix of company identities, phrases such as "the company" would benefit greatly from being re-phrased with specificity. Thank you.

Notes

  1. ^ Three companies are mentioned in number 1: Atotech, Schering AG, and Grüne Apotheke. Three are mentioned in number 3: Chemische Fabrik auf Actien, CAF Kahlbaum Chemische Fabrik GmbH, and Schering-Kahlbaum AG. One is mentioned in number 4: Schering-Kahlbaum AG. Three are mentioned in numbers 5 and 6: "the company" (twice) and Schering AG.

resubmitting edit requests for history section edit

I am trying to understand the issues that @Spintendo: pointed out and I'm resubmitted the request with corrections to those issues. I hope everything is ok now and that I haven't taken up too much of your time. AnnaAtAtotech (talk) 10:44, 5 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

COI request - one history request and new section request edit

Hi. I'm making two edit requests today based on feedback I received from Spintendo, and then on a new section request.

1. The third paragraph about 1936 in the history section misses one of the key developments of that year. Spintendo pointed out an issue with the use of the word "Now" and I've changed that wording. This would take the place of what is currently on the wiki for the year 1936.

Schering-Kahlbaum AG began manufacturing its own electroplating equipment in 1936. Initially, electroplating focused on improving the electrolytes, but subsequently there were increased demands on the requirements of the equipment. Consequently, Schering worked on aligning the functions of the electrolyte and the equipment.[1]

2. I'm requesting the addition of a section called International Expansion with four subsections. It would read like this:

Extended content
International Expansion
Germany

In 2011, Atotech launched its first production facility for the manufacture of high purity chemistry in Neuruppin in Berlin. The site has a capacity to produce 35,000 tons of chemicals per year. [2]

China

In 2015 Atotech opened a new manufacturing plant in Guangzhou, China. It was the company’s third facility for the manufacture of production equipment for the electronics industry. [3]

Taiwan

Atotech Taiwan Ltd. increased investment in R&D during the worldwide financial crisis in 2007, which led to an annual revenue increase of 10.5% compared to 2006. [4]

USA

The company has a facility in Rock Hill, South Carolina and technology centers in Albany, New York and Denver, Colorado. https://www.atotech.com/usa/

  1. ^ This part of the edit request proposal requires clarification because the reasoning for its inclusion has not been offered. The reason why Schering's development is notable to mention in the article on Atotech rather than an article on Schering needs to be delineated. Also, the page number of the document is missing.
