Alexander James Adams update

Article has been rewritten to reflect transition. Rename assistance has been requested at Wikipedia:Requested_moves, hopefully it will be done soon. Merge career and discography sections

The career and discographies sections should be merged better with care to de-emphasize the subject's transition as we have evidence of that desire. Specifically section titles could be changed to date range rather than re-iterating names used. Benjiboi 01:19, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Archiving discussion about Alec's transition

Jen, I don't mean to step on your toes, but gender transition of a public figure is a very rare occurence, and I think it would be a good idea to keep a record of the process for other Wikipedia editors. Your instict was good, as the discussion was no longer immediately relevant to the article; that is why the Wikipedia allows for archiving pieces out of a talk page. By doing it this way, we can come back latter and see the discussion, and editors for other articles can see how we put together the new article out of the old one. Clarification on the "guideline on identity for trans men" in the talk page header

First, a thank you to Joe Decker for adding it: I would have done so much earlier if I had known such a header existed.

Second, Alec is notable both before and after transition, which makes him something of a special case. When writing specifically about Heather Alexander -- childhood, marriage, performances, interviews, discography, recognitions -- it is appropriate to use female pronouns as that was the gender presented. Better yet, when possible, chose phrasing that avoids the need for gendered references, as this article does quite well. When using direct quotes made about Heather Alexander that use gendered pronouns, those pronouns should not be changed. In all other cases, male pronouns should be used. Hi TechBear--the header is new, so there's no reason you would have known about it, it was crated in response to a request on WP:VPM, because in part MOS:IDENTITY isn't as well known and is often mistakenly ignored.

I might be missing something, but if you are saying that Alec is an exception because of previously performing as Heather and that that creates an exception by itself to MOS:IDENTITY's requirement for male pronouns, I'd have to disagree, the specific injunction " This applies in references to any phase of that person's life." is straight from the guideline, has a history in the discussions that led to it that specifically note it's intent to use what I might call retroactive pronouns, nouns, etc., and is embodied in several parallel articles such as Wendy Carlos and Dee Palmer. Of course we should be clear that that work was done as Heather, but in general discussion the new name and pronoun should be consistently and uniformly used throughout descriptions of the person's life. If there's a separate reason, specific to Alec, to be an exception to the guideline, (e.g., the entertainer's explicit and well-sourced current preferences), that would in my view be different, of course. I hear your dubious look at me from here, you're welcome to verify my reading of MOS:IDENTITY over at the appropriate WT page (WT:MOS, or better, WP:BLPN, as MOS:IDENTITY arises from issues about the appropriate and kind treatment of living people.) The last time I spent any time looking at the guidelines for identity was when this article was being written; we found that there was nothing on how to transition a Wikipedia article from a notable person of one gender to a notable person of another gender. The discussion we had then -- much of it at fan events and so not reflected in the archive -- was that references to Heather Alexander, as Heather Alexander, should remain female. This was because Alec himself was making this kind of distinction at the time, referring to Heather as "she" in the third person, and because the earlier Heather Alexander page here included a number of direct quotes and references that used feminine pronouns, and we were concerned that uneven usage would encourage well-meaning edits that made things even less clear.

I would not be surprised if policies have been clarified and expanded in the previous five years: Alec was one of the first such transitions on Wikipedia and I'm pretty sure he wasn't the last. If policy has been clarified, the we should of course use it rather than the working guidelines we used for this article years ago. TechBear | Talk | Contributions 15:03, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, the landscape has definitely shifted in five years there (both on Wikipedia and off). In terms of the letter of policy, MOS:IDENTITY is our basic stake in the ground. If Alec is using pronouns differentially in referring to events pre- and post- transition, I'd be the last person to stand in the way of honoring that, the principle underlying MOS:IDENTITY is respecting self-identification. --j⚛e decker^talk 23:05, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
