Regarding "honor" vs. "honour": I'm as America-centric as they come but it seems to me the real question here is which spelling a German writing in English would use. I checked my correspondence with a German friend (who writes in English) and he consistently uses the British spellings, e.g., "colour" rather than "color". I suspect that most Europeans learn British English, rather than American English, and spell words correspondingly. (Meanwhile I will continue to use American spellings in the articles I write and edit!)

On the other hand, I can't figure out why MPF bothered to "correct" the spelling in the first place when Berton (who is European, I believe) wrote the article and used "honor" consistently throughout. MrDarwin 03:16, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

I'd agree; English is extensively spoken in Germany as a second language, and (as throughout the EU) British English is used. Following local practice comes higher up the list of priorities in the Wiki Manual of Style than first usage does, which is described as "If all else fails, consider following ...". For info, Berton is in Brazil; I would guess US English is the more used there. - MPF 15:59, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

Obviously, the question here is not what spelling Engler would have used, that is not relevant. You might as well argue what kind of spelling an elephant would use?

What is important here firstly is to have unity of spelling within the entry. Secondly, more people read and write American English rather than British English, so it is more or less default. Correcting to British English should be reserved to entries typically British. I will admit that entries on botanical nomenclature should really be in British spelling (although not idiom) as that is the standard of the ICBN. Brya 14:28, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

"Adolf Engler" the name by which he is known, quite correctly should be the title of the article; his full name should be given near the beginning of the article Paul venter 21:44, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
