it was written that the IPL started from 2008, while in fact it started from 2007. 193.50.175.36 (talk) 13:22, 19 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Query

edit

How is a user expected to edit match related info if the templates are semi-protected? I can't find any ways to do any sort of editing. Any suggestion on the same will be much appreciated.

I think the idea is that there will be unnecessary edits if it's free for all. There are enough autoconfirmed users who will take care of the editing. PS: you might consider appending your message with ~~~~ to sign it. – sudhanva (talk) 06:03, 21 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Coordinator and Vice-Coordinator

edit

We need a Coordinator and Vice-Coordinator for this Wiki Project IPL. Anyone interested please put your name up here. Will wait for the reply from interested co-editors. Cricket246 (talk) 09:22, 27 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

What will be responsibilities for this one? I am interested for some responsibility. 42774 (talk) 04:35, 28 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Interested. Like 42774 asked, what are the responsibilities? sudhanva (talk) 03:07, 3 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi @42774: and @Sudhanvahegde: It's nothing special responsibility. Just looking after the various IPL related pages and address any disputes that may arise in pages related to IPL! Cricket246 (talk) 15:53, 4 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Ok, I will help as much as I can, but I don't want to any specific role. 42774 (talk) 16:57, 4 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Sure. Was gonna be doing that anyway :) sudhanva (talk) 08:14, 7 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Squads

edit

Where is the List of Current Squads in the article? It shows personnel changes; but Current squads is not mentioned anywhere in the article. Please add this as 'further information' under 'Personnel Changes' section. 14.139.38.176 (talk) 20:13, 4 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Match templates

edit

Why are these being used for each and every match on this years' edition of the IPL? Seeing as the main article is protected from editing to prevent IP disruption, doesn't that make the templates redundant, as they are not protected? Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 13:00, 8 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. I don't really see the need to detail every single match. It's only a domestic T20 competition, not the World Cup or Champions Trophy. Also, they shouldn't really use an icon to indicate which team is playing at home. – PeeJay 08:56, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks PeeJay. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 12:47, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Match templates are being used so that the score updates reflect across teams' season pages and to avoid needless edits to the main article. The template for the first match is used in Mumbai Indians in 2018 and Chennai Super Kings in 2018 pages, apart from this article, so one update in the template will reflect in three articles. This is standard practice in multi-team sports events; take a look at Hockey at the 2018 Commonwealth Games – Men's tournament, 2014 FIFA World Cup, etc. @PeeJay2K3: I have reverted your edit which removed all the templates from the article. Dee03 14:06, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry, but I don't think this is necessary. To be honest, I don't find it useful to add a summary of every single result to this page. It's just too much information. This competition is played every year and only takes place in one country, so why does it need to be covered in such detail? – PeeJay 14:18, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
I agree the match summaries carry too much information for this page, but you can't have a cricket tournament article without having a summary for each match of the tournament. I guess making the summaries collapsible would keep the article length in check. Dee03 14:26, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
I see that you are removing match summaries from all the IPL season articles without consensus/discussion. That is mass-removal of content purely because of WP:IDONTLIKEIT. I suggest you stop and revert those edits before someone reports you for disruption. Dee03 14:34, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
No, it's not a case of WP:IDONTLIKEIT. It's too much content for one page and a violation of WP:NOTSTATS. The matches are adequately summarised by the grid. See 2017–18 Premier League for a similar example. – PeeJay 14:37, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
And no, making the tables collapsible would not be a suitable solution since MOS:COLLAPSE says you shouldn't put content in collapsible boxes if that content isn't available somewhere else in the article. – PeeJay 14:38, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Apples and oranges. Premier League has 324 matches. IPL has just 60. I don't see how match summaries are covered under WP:NOTSTATS. Dee03 14:41, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
By the way, football also uses collapsible match summaries. See 2017–18 Arsenal F.C. season. Dee03 14:42, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Just because something is used incorrectly somewhere else doesn't make it correct to use it here. That article is also in violation of MOS:COLLAPSE and WP:NOTSTATS. The cricket match templates were designed to be a summary of each match to be used in conjuction with a prose summary of each game. This is not appropriate use of those templates. – PeeJay 14:45, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
2003–04 Arsenal F.C. season is a featured article and uses collapsible match summaries. If you have a problem with the way cricket match templates are used across the site, raise your concern in the appropriate place instead of mass-removing content without ANY discussion whatsoever. Dee03 14:49, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry you feel that way. I'm just following WP:BOLD. The fact is, the info I removed was basically a wall of numbers. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, not a sports almanac, and that info is better suited to a site like Cricinfo. In 20 years, do you think someone will care which team won the toss in the game between Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals? I mean, I'm sure someone will, but not the average reader, who will probably bemoan the fact that they have to scroll past so much info to get to the important bit. – PeeJay 14:59, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Then I guess you'll go on blanking every tour page since they are all "wall[s] of numbers". Like I said before, please discuss your concerns in the right place, get consensus and then continue with your mass deletion of content. "to get to the important bit"? What is that bit I wonder. Dee03 15:05, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
"The important bit" varies from reader to reader. And no, I wouldn't delete that content from international tour articles since they're about international tours, not an annual domestic competition. – PeeJay 15:12, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Like it or not, this annual domestic competition is considered to be important enough globally to be included on WP:ITNR and is more widely watched than the average international cricket tour. Dee03 15:16, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Even it is considered as globally important tournament, still it's too much content for one page and a violation of WP:NOTSTATS, also individual match templates are not being used in global important tournaments, like World Cup or World T20. 42774 (talk) 04:20, 10 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
@42774: I have already given a couple of examples of global tournaments using match templates. Please see Hockey at the 2018 Commonwealth Games – Men's tournament, Football at the 2016 Summer Olympics – Men's tournament, Ice hockey at the 2018 Winter Olympics – Men's tournament, etc. Cricket World Cup and World T20 don't use match templates because they don't have team season pages like Chennai Super Kings in 2018 where these match results are used. The problem with not using templates is, in case of today's match, you have to perform the same score update on three articles: the tournament page, Chennai Super Kings in 2018 and Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018. By using a match template, you only need to update the template for the changes to reflect on all three pages. This can avoid duplication of effort and prevent articles from getting outdated like Mumbai Indians in 2017 (in which match summaries of half the matches are not updated). Dee03 14:15, 10 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
I have also confused to see the use of newly created templates instead of editing the scorecards manually in this particular article. Though some of them mentioned that a particular edit in a Scorecard template would automatically cause changes to the 2018 Indian Premier League article, the new strategy seems to be rather unnecessary when thinking from my point of view. On the other hand these scorecard templates are not protected at all and the ironical thing is the article has been unnecessarily given semi-protection. I feel that the templates should be provided the semi-protection instead of the mainspace. This I feel is an alternate method and new approach followed by some group of Wikipedians as it is completely ironical to the traditional way of editing scorecards according to the general behaviour of our WikiProject Cricket. But I also support this new strategy as it helps to avoid the workload. Abishe (talk) 15:21, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Where was the discussion to go ahead and use those templates instead of containing the info in the main article? None of the other IPL seasons use those templates, and it's never been a problem with them. And if it has, they'd get page protection (as this does now) to reduce any bad edits. Being listed on WP:ITNR is neither here nor there. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 16:18, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Now, templates are protected, so only template editors and administrators can only update. 42774 (talk) 11:45, 24 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Statistics

edit

Tournament statistics should not be added during tournament as wikipedia is not a stats database . Earlier discussed on Talk:Indian cricket team in South Africa in 2017–18 42774 (talk) 04:53, 10 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi I would like to request for auto confirm user I have 481 edits and I understand if you do not except me. I want to edit the League Stage of 2018 Indian Premier League
Not done: Vikas265, as the other editors have responded already, this is not the right page to request user rights. To do that, please go to Wikipedia:Requests_for_permissions. In my mind you should already have access to edit being that you have 478 edits and a 5month old account. Perhaps create a new request in the Confirmed section asking why you do not have auto-confirmed if that is the case. Please click the link on edit previously to check if you do have permission to edit — IVORK Discuss 01:44, 17 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
I guess the only other explanation is that either Dlohcierekim or Primefac removed your "auto-confirmed" status as that appears to be the mark you stopped being able to edit. Hopefully they will respond here soon — IVORK Discuss 01:51, 17 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
If this request however is on the fact that when you click edit you just see templates such as {{2018 IPL match 48}}, instead, type Template:2018 IPL match 48 into the search bar and you can edit the data there. — IVORK Discuss 01:55, 17 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

This request appears to be for the fact you cannot edit the raw data as they are all transcluded from templates, click [show] on the box below then click any of the links below to edit the corresponding data sets Vikas265, let me know if you have any further problems — IVORK Discuss 02:01, 17 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Template edit request

edit

I wanted to insert the scorecard of Delhi Daredevils batting (second innings) as 139/8 according to ESPN Cricinfo as DD lost the match by 4 runs. This template hasn't been updated as it requires template editor request. Somebody update this template as quickly as possible. Thanks

DD 139/8 (20 overs)

  • Iyer 57 (45)
  • Rajpoot 2-23 (4 overs)
  • M.O.M - Ankit Rajpoot

This template has been outdated since the template editor protection access following the vandalising behaviour by a specific editor. {{2018 IPL match 22}} Abishe (talk) 11:12, 24 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Squads templates

edit

I added squads templates; these can be retained here till next season then inserted there and removed here. I hope that meets with your approvals. DadaNeem (talk) 15:15, 2 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

There is no need to add those templates into this article. The squads are already covered in detail in a separate article which is linked in this article. The purpose of squad templates is to facilitate navigation, and we only use them in the team page and the players' pages. Dee03 15:20, 2 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Template Colors

edit

In recent updates, match templates are updated with border & colors, it doesn't look as standard , comparing with other cricket tournament pages. Also as discussed earlier in page, templates are used to updates reflect across teams' season pages. Now, here match templates having alternate background colours, teams' season page looks weird now. 42774 (talk) 13:30, 7 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

@42774: I agree. This was obviously done in good faith by Mr.Mani Raj Paul, but like you said, it messes up the team season pages. Please revert the edits (I am a little busy today, else I would have done it myself). Dee03 15:33, 7 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
