The first sentence of the Sports section says...

The sports featured at the 2004 Summer Olympics are listed below.

UNITY album?

Shouldn't there be something said about these 2 CDs? I can't find anything about the CD on wiki and some songs on that CD should be new too even Utada Hikaru's english song with other artists. Bakahito 17:57, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Exchange of flag

In the article one can read

"A significant part of the closing ceremony was the exchange of the Olympic flag of the Antwerp games between the mayor of Athens and the mayor of Beijing, host city of the next Olympic games."

However, in the Olympic Flag article, it says

"The Antwerp flag was presented to the IOC at the 1920 Summer Olympics by the city of Antwerp, Belgium, and at the Closing Ceremony of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, was passed on to the next organising city of the Summer Olympics (the Games of Seoul 1988), when it was retired. The Antwerp Flag is now on display at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland. (...) The Seoul flag was presented to the IOC at the 1988 Summer Olympics by the city of Seoul, South Korea, and is passed on to the next organising city of the Summer Olympics."

So I believe this is incorrect in this article? Could someone verify this?

Problem with images

Sport templates

I think it's a terrible idea to have the overal Olympic template at the bottom of each of the sport pages. It clutters up the page (even if there is an option to hide it) and is not necessary to go from one olympic games to the next. These templates should be deleted. Impact on Greek economy

Number of participating countries

The infobox says that 201 NOC's participated, which is conform the data in the reference olympic.org. The article itself 2004 Summer Olympics#Participating NOCs lists 202 NOC's (I counted them), both in the table as in the text. Where is the error? Miho NL (talk) 12:26, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

The official report for these Games is now online here, so the definitive answer can be found somewhere in there. I haven't looked at all 202 articles in Category:Nations at the 2004 Summer Olympics either, to see if there are nations who have no results (i.e. no athletes actually competed), but that might be a useful task to answer this question. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:12, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

That country is Djibouti - according to The Complete Book Of The Olympics Games, neither of their athletes competed. I've also cross-referenced that with Djibouti at the 2004 Summer Olympics and the BBC results pages that they entered (men's 800m and women's 1500m), and neither of them competed. Controversies

Medal Count Section Location

It seems to me that the medal count section is placed too early in the article. It would be more intuitive to place it after the "Sports" section in my opinion. It's odd to see it right after the TOC. The 2000 Summer Olympics has the medal tally after the sports section. Any comments? H1nkles (talk) 20:45, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Bid and Preparations enhancements

• This section encompasses a lot of different subjects. I can identify two that could have their own heading, or sub-heading at least. Namely, the issues related to security, and the reality that the preparations for the 2004 Games fell woefully behind schedule. These were significant issues in the years running up to these games. Flushing out these subjects with research would enhance the overall quality of this article. Also it would be important to recognize that the Greeks did complete preparations for the Games on time and that there were no major security compromises during the games. Seriously now: In Greece there have been extensive discussions about the costs of the works, and about the lack of concrete plans concerning their future utilization after the games. But I am not sure if this falls within the article's topic.--Yannismarou (talk) 19:54, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

• In reading further in the article there is some time devoted to the truncated schedule that these venues and infrastructure were on in order to be completed. I agree that this article deals primarily with the event of the Olympics rather than the impact the Olympics may have had, and continues to have on Greece. H1nkles (talk) 22:31, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Unreliable numbers

The "number of participants" listed in the "Participatng NOCs" section includes some very unlikely numbers, such as 372 participants for Georgia (c.f. 35 this year). This and many other of these numbers were added in this edit, an anon IP which has never edited before or since. I've checked a few of these against the number of competitors listed in the infobox on the relevant <country> in the 2004 Olympics article and none of them agree. So if anyone cares about sports statistics these really all need to be checked and revised. Unfortunately I wouldn't know where to start looking for reliable sources on this... You're right - the numbers are wrong. I updated this section recently (just the missing numbers - I assumed the rest was correct) with data I found on this site: http://www.sports-reference.com/olympics/countries/ If you'd like to have a go updating it - go ahead. Someone had also just removed Russia from the medals table; I added them in with the correct numbers. While such speculation is somewhat worthless, possibly related to recent political occurrances in Caucasus witht he added Georgian numbers. Highlights?

All the other Olympics pages from at least 1968 onwards (and perhaps excluding the 2000 page) have a section for "highlights" of the Games. I think this really makes the page worthwhile and is the best section on all these Olympic pages. Controversy

It is completely untrue that 21 out of the 22 Olympic Facilities are unused after the Olympic games, and even the Yahoo Sports article that was cited which offered this statistic later removed this figure from its article. It can be verified that many of the facilities are in use, while others are in the process of being turned over to the private sector and/or converted to non-athletics uses. To say, however, that the facilities are abandoned and lie in ruin is patently false, and to say that this should "serve as a lesson" for future Olympics bids is a distortion of reality and is also injecting editorializing into what is supposed to be an objective, factual article about the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. As far as the Olympic facilities are concerned, www.olympicproperties.gr is one of many sites that provides a great overview as to how the facilities are used in the post-Olympics era in Athens, and many facilities have their own websites as well (www.oaka.com.gr for the Olympic Stadium, www.badmintontheater.gr for the Badminton Theater, etc.). You may be right - but I wasn't aware of any Yahoo article. I think the original one that was posted that raised this whole issue was the Daily Mail article [1]. It certainly looks from the photos in this article as if the Olympic site has problems. I've no idea who is telling the truth - the Daily Mail is a newspaper that loves nothing better than to scare people into thinking something is a problem. Then again, it would seem to me that all of the links you've listed would have a vested interest in saying that there wasn't a problem. The key issue here is that there are 3 independant sources commentating on the area being in a state of disrepair and the only sources you have saying otherwise are websites directly related to the venues. The "independent" sources are completely wrong. I don't see what the problem is with using websites that are directly related to the venues, especially when they do list events that have taken place there since 2004. I would think that the venue website would provide a more accurate view into how the facility is being used than some "independent" observations that took place during a sample of a few days. And to say that 21 out of the 22 facilities are not in use is blatantly wrong. Below, please find websites that detail how the facilities are used:

But this is not reason to delete the whole section on legacy, some of it is still correct and you need to go through the rest and add info on what is still in use and reference it as you have done above. Too many flags!

Hi. I like the look of the flags and the way they've been used really adds something to the article. However, the section 2004_Summer_Olympics#Participating_NOCs contains a huge number of flags and my computer is really struggling to show them all, thus affecting the overall readability of the article.

Also, I think the flags in this section are far less helpful than in other sections: in other sections, where there are just a few countries being referred to, the flags help give a "visual summary" if you're only browsing. In the Participating_NOCs section, however, a significant proportion of the countries in the entire world are being represented and the images don't seem to serve any useful purpose except to look pretty.

Given that the only benefit of the flags that I can conceive of is visual attractiveness, and also given that this many images causes me (and therefore presumably many other readers) issues with actually getting to the useful content, I propose removing the flags from this section of the article.

If anyone knows of any guidelines that relate to this issue, I'd be very interested to see them. GDallimore (Talk) 14:02, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

I tend to agree. Maybe it's a good idea though to take it up at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Olympics as it concerns all the Olympic articles. Of course, for the times when far fewer countries participated (like at 1908 Summer Olympics#Participating nations), the flags are much less in the way. Yeah, I saw MOSFLAG, but it didn't seem very helpful. Although I guess: "Do not emphasize nationality without good reason" might cover it - what is the reason to use the flags in this particular section of the article?

Would one of those hide/show box features be any good there so the flags/countries could all be listed still if people chose to show it? Whilst its not vital that flags be displayed, i think its better to see the flags than a block of text of country names, especially as flags are used a huge amount in international organisations, especially sports. "Plastic Explosives Discovery"

To the IP user who keeps adding this material....

In order to add this section a source which others can view and verify needs to be provided. "Verifiability is one of Wikipedia's core content policies" and any contentious material should not be added unless it can be checked and proven. Saying that the proof is classified is not good enough. Per the above linked policy page "the threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth", "the burden of evidence lies with the editor who adds or restores material" and "you may remove any material lacking a reliable source that directly supports it". The user who keeps adding this actually phoned me just now. (My number's publicly available as a Wikimedia press contact; I try not to engage in editing disputes, but felt it was a good example of general public relations with those who've wandered into the Wikipedia sausage factory and fallen head-first into the meat grinder.) The trouble is that Wikipedia's epistemology breaks down at the edges and becomes arbitrary, and can be surreal for those who know something but don't have another third party having publicised it - I tried to explain. I'm sure it is sincere but it's reaching the stage where the edits are becoming disruptive. An online source for the explosives discovery has been offered but it's to a self published page (other sources provided have been to prove that the admiral mentioned exists but I'm not bothered about that). Until a published source that is reliable is provided so that the claims cane be verified the information is not suitable for inclusion in an encyclopaedia and should be removed. Even when (if) a source can be provided the edits as they are being made would be giving undue weight to the event. The IP editor still seems not to grasp how their edits conflict with WP policy and communicating policy through edit summaries is difficult - the user has a constantly changing IP address and doesn't seem interested in adding to the talk page here - Basement12 (T.C) 10:43, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

Logo

Articles about the Olympics typically describe the logo in the top right panel. Am I correct in assuming that the Athens 2004 logo is a laurel wreath, drawn in the colors of the Greek flag? Is there anything else to it? Digital infinity (talk) 01:08, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

Legacy Issues

I'm not sure whether this point has already been raised elsewhere, so bear with me: Given that the Games took place eight years ago, there is a better opportunity to assess their impact on Athens and Greece - especially since some people assume that the Games contributed to the current Greek debt crisis in a major fashion. Calendar

The Calendar is so out of whack that it isn't funny. For starters, the Open water swimming marathons are included in the calendar, but were not held until 2008. Then we have events that were held on wrong days including the Shot Put events which were held on August 18th at Olympia and an extra day added for Swimming. Finally, Weightlifting had events listed on different days in comparison to the real schedule. Fact check, section "Highlights"

There is a line "The United States lost for the first time in Olympic men's basketball since 1992". Isn't that illogical, since, please check me, but didn't the 1992 U.S. men's basketball team go something like {infinite number of wins, zero losses}? Perhaps the sentence should read "since 1988":
