Career edit

AIG/Alico Career edit

In 1989, Khalaf began his financial career with American Life Insurance Company (Alico), a subsidiary of American International Group (AIG), as an investment officer in Wilmington, Delaware.[2][8][9]

During his time with Alico, Khalaf became the first general manager of Alico’s Egyptian operation in 1996. Five years later, Khalaf oversaw Alico’s Life, Pension and Mutual Fund operations in Poland, Romania and the Baltics as regional senior vice president. In the following years, he served as deputy president and chief operating officer of Philamlife, another subsidiary of AIG, in the Philippines. He then returned to Alico as the regional president of the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia region.[1][10] He remained with AIG subsidiaries for 21 years until Alico was acquired by MetLife in 2010.[9]

MetLife Career edit

Following the MetLife acquisition of Alico in 2010, Khalaf became chief executive officer of the company’s Middle East, Africa, and South Asia region. The following year, he became president of the company’s Europe, Middle East, and Africa region and joined the Executive Group. In this position, Khalaf was responsible for insurance businesses in more than 25 markets.[1][8]

In addition, Khalaf assumed the role of president of MetLife’s U.S. Business units in 2017. These units included Group Benefits, Retirement & Income Solutions, and Property & Casualty insurance. At the same time, he also became responsible for MetLife Global Employee Benefits, a business unit dedicated to growing employee benefits in 40 global markets.[1][8][11]

Khalaf was named president and CEO of MetLife in January 2019. He assumed the role in May of the same year, succeeding Steven Kandarian.[8][9][12][13]

After joining the Geneva Association in 2019, Khalaf broadened his activity with the group by becoming a member of its Board of Directors the next year. He is also a member of the US-China Business Council Board of Directors, a role he obtained in 2020.[16][17][18][19] Additionally, Khalaf is a member of the Partnership for New York City’s Board of Directors, The Business Council, and Business Roundtable.[8][20][21][22]
