Biography

edit

Born on September 10, 1980 in Brasília[11][12], at the age of three she moved with her mother to the outskirts of São Luís from Maranhão after her parents' divorce. A victim of abuse at the age of 13, she ran away from her mother's home to live with her father in Brasília, the federal capital. She is the daughter of a civil servant who moved to the private sector, attended good schools as a teenager, and graduated in economics from the University of Brasília, where she completed her master's degree in the same field. At the age of 24 she moved to São Paulo city, where she began her professional career.

In 2020, he was Filipe Sabará's running mate in the election campaign for mayor of São Paulo[13], but he withdrew his candidacy after the candidate was expelled from the party, who at the time claimed to be persecuted by João Amoedo, one of the party's founders. As a result, the New Party requested that both of their names be removed from the ballot.[14][15]

In 2022, she ran for federal deputy[16], when she declared assets of R$8.6 million to the Electoral Court. She was a candidate who attracted the attention and donations of large investors in the financial market, obtaining 50,073 votes for the New Party, of which she was once a national leader, and is currently the 1st alternate for the party's chair in the state of São Paulo. During this campaign, she reported to the police that she had been the target of cyberattacks by bots on her Instagram account[17]. She was also an economist for presidential candidate Felipe d'Avila in the same year.

During her professional and political career, Marina headed the Special Secretariat for Privatization and Divestment, at the invitation of Minister Paulo Guedes during President Jair Bolsonaro's government[18], and was responsible for coordinating the preparation of a government plan for the city of São Paulo in 2020. Marina was also CEO of the Millenium Institute[19][20][21][22][23] and founder of the Brasil Without Privileges movement. She worked for 20 years in the financial market, having also worked in several institutions such as Itaú, Bradesco and Bozano Investments.

Campaign for mayor of São Paulo in 2024

edit

On October 30, 2023, the New Party announced Marina Helena as its pre-candidate for the municipal elections in São Paulo, for the year 2024. Although the party considered former federal deputy Vinicius Poit and state deputy Léo Siqueira, Marina Helena won the party's internal race and ultimately became the pre-candidate for the position.[24][25][25]

In January 2024, Marina made national headlines and was the target of criticism and attacks on social media after playing a speech by Javier Milei for her son Theo to listen to while she was pregnant with him. The candidate claimed that these were attacks made by the left.[26][27][28][29]

In March, she caused bustle by posting a photo wearing a t-shirt calling for the impeachment of Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. This occurred months before the controversies involving the same minister, about the censorship of profiles on X (formerly Twitter) and the ban on X in Brazil.[30][31][32][33]
