"Lowak" is the second episode of of the American television series Echo, based on Marvel Comics featuring the character Echo. It sees Maya Lopez return to her hometown where she must come to terms with her past, reconnect with her Native American roots, and embrace her family and community. The episode is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the films of the franchise. It was written by head writer Marion Dayre and Josh Feldman with Steven P. Judd, and Ellen Morton, from a story by Dayre with Ken Kristensen, and Feldman with Judd, and Rebecca Roanhorse with Bobby Wilson, and was directed by Sydney Freeland.

Alaqua Cox reprises her role as Maya Lopez / Echo from Hawkeye (2021), with Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs, Zahn McClarnon, Cody Lightning, Graham Greene, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Charlie Cox also starring. Development had begun by March 2021, and was formally announced in November, when Dayre was revealed to be serving as head writer. Freeland was set to direct by March 2022.

"Lowak" was released on Disney+ and Hulu on January 9, 2024, with the rest of the series.

Plot

Maya enlists Biscuits' help in hijacking a cargo train guarded by Fisk's men. She locates a munitions container, and plants a homemade bomb inside one of the crates. As she attempts to get off, her prosthetic leg becomes stuck in a coupling. Maya receives a vision of her ancestors, then manages to push the coupling off to free her leg after her hands begin to glow. The shipment arrives at one of Fisk's armories in New York. Black Knife Cartel leader Zane dispatches men to unload the crate, triggering Maya's bomb which destroys the facility. Maya later gets a new prosthetic leg from Skully, who reveals that one of the women in Maya's vision was Chafa, the first Choctaw. Henry learns about the munitions explosion and later confronts Maya, warning her to stop these attacks before she ends up hurting people close to her, but she dismisses this. Meanwhile, Chula receives word that Maya is in town, and Bonnie learns of Maya's return in Tamaha from Biscuits. Maya refuses to interact with either of them.

By March 2021, Marvel Studios was in early development on a spin-off from Hawkeye (2021) centered on Alaqua Cox's Maya Lopez for the streaming service Disney+, with Etan Cohen and Emily Cohen set to write and executive produce.[1] During the Disney+ Day event in November 2021, the series was officially announced as Echo,[2] and Marion Dayre was serving as head writer by then instead of the Cohens.[3] Marvel Studios confirmed Sydney Freeland as a director in May 2022, and she directs the first episode.[4][5] Executive producers for the series include Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige, Stephen Broussard, Louis D'Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Victoria Alonso, and Richie Palmer, alongside Dayre, Jason Gavin, and Freeland, while Amy Rardin is a co-executive producer.[6][7] The second episode, titled "Lowak", was written by Dayre and Josh Feldman & Steven Paul Judd and Ellen Morton, from a story by Dayre & Ken Kristensen and Feldman & Judd and Rebecca Roanhorse & Bobby Wilson.[8]

Filming took place in the Atlanta metropolitan area including Atlanta, Peachtree City, Social Circle, and Grantville, Georgia,[10][11][12][13] with Freeland directing.[5]

Release

The episode was released on Disney+ and Hulu on January 9, 2024.[14] It was originally scheduled to release on January 10,[15] and was available on Hulu until April 9.[16]

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reports a XX% approval rating with an average rating of XXX/10, based on 1 review.[17]
