User:Ldm1954 do the reviews and citations for his books (published and republished over many decades) on Kansas Populism and its leaders not establish notability per the guideline you linked? Who is more of an authority on the subject?

FloridaArmy (talk) 13:40, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

If you want him to be considered as an author, then you have to state this, e.g. Gene Clanton was an author who wrote...
You then must prove to the reader/reviewer that he was notable. See WP:AUTHOR. Show that independent sources call him notable. Currently the page only states that he published a few books (which many academics do), which is not notable.
Remeber, independent sources for all statements. Ldm1954 (talk) 07:30, 6 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you. I'll see what I can do. African American-only secondary schools that no longer exist are certainly notable, but it is hard to find sources for them. Drmies, you seem to be good at writing about things like this. Meanwhile, I plan on checking all of your recently rejected drafts to see if I can save them. Scorpions1325, I think the topic is probably notable but the draft needs improvement, esp. in terms of sourcing. I'm sure there's sourcing available. Drmies (talk) 00:41, 12 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Drmie, unfortunately Newspapers.com and Archive.org were useless for both drafts I tried saving. Scorpions1325 (talk) 01:49, 16 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

George Kunkel edit

I finished off your draft and moved it to George Kunkel (theatre manager) and created a separate article on the silent film actor George Kunkel (actor). They were not the same person. The Kunkel brothers Charles and Jacob were unrelated. They were born in Germany and educated as pianists and composers in that country before immigrating to the United States where they settled in Saint Louis. They worked for Steinway & Sons as well as operating their own music publishing company in Saint Louis. Kunkel's Musical Review is a music magazine that their music publishing company in Saint Louis published.

"That Nasty Little Copper Colored Coon" (1896) and "Gina" were possibly not written by either of the George Kunkel men above. The theatre manager died in 1895 and had not been active in song writing for some time. (his music was written in the 1850s and 1860s while he was writing stuff for his minstrel company) It's possible that a relative may have dug up an old unpublished tune, but I suspect that this is a new writer based out of California given where those tunes were published and the updated music style. The elder song writer would not have been familiar with ragtime in all likelihood. It's possible the film actor could be the author given he was in California during this time, but I can find no evidence that the silent film star was involved in music. It's also possible that the son of the theatre manager, also named George Kunkle, could have followed in his dad's footsteps and written those tunes. Regardless, the author is not clear, so I removed them. 4meter4 (talk) 06:08, 17 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Great! Thanks User:4meter4. The intersection with John Wilkes Booth, John T. Ford whose theater Abraham Lincoln's assassination took place, Uncle Tom's Cabin, and blackface minstrelsy is fascinating. I jotted a couple notes (questions) I hd on the talkpage. I also started draft for Draft:Eph Horn and Draft:Jim Sanford. FloridaArmy (talk) 13:13, 17 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
You are welcome. I came across George Kunkel, Sr. after writing this massive project: Richmond Theatre (Richmond, Virginia). I have now expanded our coverage of the Kunkel family by creating an article on Marie Kunkel Zimmerman (daughter of George, Sr. and sister of George, Jr.) and one on Marie's husband, Edward M. Zimmerman.4meter4 (talk) 17:06, 23 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Which led to Draft:Henry Gordon Thunder which turns out to be a father and son (grandfather alos a musician?). So much left to do User:4meter4. The music of the era adds color to the events and people. Henry G. Gordon Sr. writing a civil war song for volunteers from Philly for example. His son was recorded on organ on various Victor records. Matelea pubiflora edit

I had to move your article Matelea pubiflora to Chthamalia pubiflora since that name is the one currently accepted by Plants of the World Online. Consensus at WP:WikiProject Plants is to use POWO as the backbone source for all flowering plants. As I have previously mentioned, it is best to use the stub template given at WP:WikiProject Plants/Template. If you like, instead of going through the rigmarole of submitting drafts to WP:AFC, you can just ask me to create a stub on any plant that interests you. It takes me about 20 minutes to whip up a stub. Abductive (reasoning) 10:48, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

The names keep changing and if things go the way they are for the birds the use of the names of people will be changed going forward. I always thought it was weird to name a plant or animal for a person. As far as plants go if they are missing when I try to look them up I try to add them. I've noticed from a lot of the genus pages we have a very very very long way to go.

User:Abductive for a start there are drafts at:

FloridaArmy (talk) 15:15, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Cool, I'll take a look at those. As an aside, one of the reasons the participants in WP:PLANTS defer to POWO is because it is an operation of Kew Gardens, run by a famous botanist, Rafaël Govaerts. He and his team are paid to straighten out the naming issues that have bedeviled the field of plant taxonomy for the last 250 years, and they have been making a lot of headway. Okay, Draft:Verbena carnea is ready for mainspace. Draft:Frasera angustifolia is no good, it is a synonym of Frasera speciosa which already has an article. Abductive (reasoning) 21:55, 25 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

I don't think we as a society will understand the impact of segregation fully for another generation or two, which is totally frightening. Star Mississippi 20:58, 6 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Desegregation was rough too User Star Mississippi. African American educators and staff lost their jobs. Their schools were closed. Some were converted to elementary schools. Children bused to other neighborhoods. Many not treated well. I was just writing about a school in the area of the Corinth School District that was closed. 15 or so jobs lost while 15 or so white educators got hired. Rough history. And largely excluded here and elsewhere. Thanks so much for your help!!! We do what we can. FloridaArmy (talk) 23:57, 6 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
