Reviving the project

edit

There's been a lot of talk about reviving the project in the past but it doesn't seem it ever came to fruition. I'm very passionate about fixing up this project and making it more visible on the other Wikipedia localizations. In the coming weeks, I will be reaching out to other Wikipedians, including active Wikipedians who were previously involved in this project at some point. I'm really hoping for this not to be a one man exercise in futility, and would love to see other faces in this project, especially those who can speak Chinese. Dealing with Closed Proxy abuse

edit

Ways to limit and avoid abuse:

  • Using IPv6: Give each contributor a single /128 that they are limited to. That way, we can identify and limit IP contributions. Sounds good in theory, but largely pointless once the entire /64 for the server is blocked.
  • XFF Project: The XFF Project allows proxy servers for Wikipedia to forward on the IP Headers of proxy users. This way, proxy users themselves can be banned, but the proxy at large will generally not be affected. Downside: requires request for each proxy servers, can be bypassed by using a VPN or other proxy server in conjunction with a Wikipedian closed proxy.

Evidently, in order for this project to succeed, we will need to determine effective methods to curb abuse from closed proxy servers hosted by this Wikiproject. Comments anyone? Elyeri (talk) 07:50, 5 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Reverse Proxy Configurations

edit

I could really use expertise on reverse proxy configurations! Do any of you have any experience with nginx/apache? I've been trying to setup proxies over and over again with no avail. Every time I manage to get a proxy up, all it does is simply redirect to Wikipedia.org without tunneling through the proxy itself. I've also been looking at other solutions such as SoftEther and Streisand VPN servers that will broaden the impact of the wikiproject and be significantly easier to setup on my end. Circumvention of Shadowsocks

edit

My plan at this point is to establish a Shadowsocks-Go server that will facilitate multiple users. However, a Chinese patent exists that could render Shadowsocks useless within the next 6 months. Re: CN105281973 A Elyeri (talk) 05:38, 30 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
