Add Bulgaria and make this WikiProject South Slavic countries?

Greetings! I'm pleased to see there's now a WikiProject on former Yugoslavia. Currently, Bulgaria doesn't have its own WikiProject and it would be quite difficult to gather people and start a separate one at this point, so I thought it might be a good idea to widen the outlook of this project to include my mother country and make it "WikiProject South Slavic countries" (as Bulgaria is the only South Slavic country not to have been part of Yugoslavia) or something like that. Now, the problem is - former Yugoslavian countries have very much in common: common history, common culture, common languages. But, here "common" is used in veeeeeeeeeeeeeeery broad sense. And I personally am afraid that it cannot be broader than it is (Slovenians and Macedonians have quite a few differences). I'm afraid that adding Bulgaria to this project would make it just too broad. For instance, can you help on articles which are listed on our Article Improvement Drive? Don't know about you, but I don't think I could help you with Bulgarian topics...

Look, this is real hard for me, because I like to cooperate and work together, because that's what Wikipedia is - one giant collaboration, and I'm very sorry for having to write this, but: I don't see what good would South Slavic WikiProject provide. I find topics of former Yugoslavia and Bulgaria just to diverse, and point of WikiProject is to coordinate actions on related topics.

I hope you won't get offended by what I wrote. I have nothing against Bulgaria, when I was a kid, I often imagined myself to be Hristo Stoitchkov :-) And, of course, being a democratic person, I'll agree to accept Bulgaria join this WikiProject if other members of this project outvote me. --Dijxtra 13:08, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Well, not all topics are disjunctive. I co-operated with Todor on Macedonian language, Rakia (IIRC), and there may be more articles of common interest, like Ajvar (just expanded), Tambura, Kajmak, Turbo-folk, Balkan wars. However, I see the FY project more as an attempt to harmonize, often wildly opposing, POVs on the common Ex-Yu history. Bulgaria has been mostly tangential to that, and I tend to agree with Dijxtra that it would dissipate the project, which still has no 100% clearly defined mission, before it even seriously started. Ummm, yes, I believe I know what you mean, guys. Indeed, the topic is quite broad already, although I can disagree with some of your points. For instance, while Macedonia and Slovenia do have little in common, Macedonia and Bulgaria are strongly related. Many of the history, culture and language topics are also shared between former Yugoslav countries and Bulgaria, but there are also important historical differences, especially during the 20th century. And really, this WikiProject as you define it, on the common history of former Yugoslavia, might not be suitable to include Bulgaria. This surely won't stop us from collaborating on the numerous topics that we share, of course, since I'm seriously keen on starting a WikiProject and/or notice board for Bulgaria-related topics soon! → Тодор Божинов / Todor Bozhinov → 18:32, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Part of my point was that Macedonia and Bulgaria are strongly related indeed. Then, Macedonia and Greece are also strongly related, as well as Albania. Since both Bulgaria and Greece are related with Turkey, which is in turn related with middle East... I agree that any border drawn must be arbitrarily, but here's where we drew it. My 2 cents: given the turbulent history of former Jugo, I think it's a darn good idea to have this wikiproj to help people get past ugly things like differences and nationalism and focus on what the former Jugo republics have in common. So I'm strongly against expanding this article to include other Slavic countries thereby making this wikiproj South Slavic Countries. However, I think having a separate wikiproj South Slavic countries is also an awesome idea. It would be a great place for south Slavs to combine knowledge and whatnot, and we'd probably all be surprised by just how much we have in common. But only as a separate project.

Question: how active do members of wikiproj former Jugo have to be? Cuz I'd like to be a member, but will definitely not be one of the more active ones.

Project page design

I'm not a fan of Creeping featurism, but I touched the bottom two tables to look a bit more vivid. With all due credits to the author's effort (Dijxtra?) the project page design now looks like the Former Yugoslavia in mid-90s – bleach and exhausted :-(. If you agree, I'd also edit the other tables (preserving the "Edit" links in headings as a must).

Yes, I know, this lines under "Article Improvement Drive", "Maintenance" and "Related" are ugly. But they are inevitable. Problem with your version was that edit link didn't work correctly for "Featured articles" and "Categorising" because there was no section directly below it. That is, Categorising was "===", and when you click on edit, it showed all the way down to next "==="... Therefore, "Related" just had to get his "==" back... Userbox design

Here I propose new design for the userbox. The thing is: I like the "YU" thingy, but some people might find it overly nostalgic. Now, in real life I just don't associate with people which have problems like that, but on Wikipedia every help we can get is good, in my oppinion. I think we should put all "enemy offensives" under more specific and neutral names, and use both German operation names (Weiss, Schwarz...) and "enemy offensives" only once we have enough material to warrant separate articles for the operations of each side.

I think the names should be:

1. Republic of Užice, with redirect from First enemy offensive (any more?)
2. Igman march, with redirect from Second enemy offensive
3. Battle of Kozara, with redirect from Third enemy offensive
4. Battle of Neretva, with redirects from Fourth enemy offensive and Fall Weiss (1943)
5. Battle of Sutjeska, with redirects from Fifth enemy offensive and Operation Schwarz
6. Sixth enemy defensive, unless we have a better name
7. Battle of Drvar, with redirect from Seventh enemy offensive

Plus any other redirects, especially from German codenames.

Ok, now that I got your attention, I need some info for the article Stjepan Filipović. First of all, does anyone know the date of his death? Second of all, the illustration there (Image:Stjepanfilipovic.jpg) is from 1942, apparently published in a newspaper. Yeah, the copyright for former yu is really tricky bussines. I tried to sort that out, asked on some law-related forums, but nobody knew nothing, apart from that the stuff created in SFRY and NDH is not public domain because: a) the county had its copyright laws (althought nobody can seem to find and quote them) so those apply to the stuff created while it existed, b) things don't get created by states, but by people, so copyright owners are not countries but people, countries only provide laws. The fact that it is debatable which laws applied in 1942 makes the situation even worse. You can read one older discussion regarding this matter here. Not that you'll find a solution to your problem there, we concluded nothing there. It'd be great if we could raise some mony and pay some layers to find the laws and figure out which stuff we can use ad PD :-) --Dijxtra 11:26, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Public domain resources

I started a Wikiproject for using the Library of Congress Country Studies. These are public domain documents on various countries. I started the project to coordinate there use here. Please take a look at the subpage on the former Yugoslavia. This is an old study done before the break up, but I think much of the information would be useful. Wohow... WikiProjects started to blossom this spring. It seems to me that this WP has problems getting started (but I'm sure we'll prevail those problems, at least I'm sure I'll go on with my work on this project in few weeks time, so it won't die out for sure) and that there exists a defficit of contributors willing to cooperate on such a broad area as former Yu... so I can predict that both Wikipedia:WikiProject Croatia and Wikipedia:WikiProject Belgrade should have even more problems as those are subsets of former Yugoslavia... just my 2 cents. --Dijxtra 16:45, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Need some help

Guys, since we've not updated the article improvement drive page for a bit, let me get your attention here. BTW we do need to update it, but it does take input from all of us. Anyhow, I started Battle of Dražgoše today, as well as Kurentovanje. I just heard about Kurentovanje today, and googled for information, but I bet Slovenes here could help out improve that article. Letters lj, nj and dž

Hello everyone. As you all know, we got used to writing letters lj, nj and dž in Serbo-Croatian as two characters, so lj becomes _l_j_ (лј instead of љ). But, they in fact exist in unicode as lj, nj and dž (one stroke at the keyboard). Would it be smart at all to start using these characters in ex-Yu related articles? Perhaps in more technical stuff, like alphabet on language articles? Say what you think.

I could help people who use Linux to get started with these characters, but I'm not sure about Windows.

Yes, "lj" in "ljubav" is one letter. And, yes, it has a unicode code. And, no, nobody uses it :-( Not only on Wikipedia, but on the Internet as a whole. And using it on Wikipedia would be something very much like original research. Not to mention that it is fairly complicated to type letter lj. I think that we should have more articles about historical states and provinces that existed in the territory of Former Yugoslavia. I will list here links to some articles that should be written. Currently, most of these links are redirects, but if anybody want to write real articles about these subjects, he can start them here. Also, the other people could to add links to more possible articles that should be written. Here is the list:

• Serbian Empire (currently a redirect to History of Medieval Serbia, but there should be separate article about medieval Serbian Empire).
• Kingdom of Serbia (currently a redirect to History of Serbia, but there should be separate article about Kingdom of Serbia until 1918).
• Pannonian Croatia (currently a redirect to History of Croatia, but there should be separate article about this state).
• Kingdom of Croatia (currently a redirect to History of Croatia, but there should be separate article about this subject).
• Banovina of Croatia (medieval) (currently a redirect to History of Croatia, but there should be separate article about this subject).

I've got an idea - how 'bout we mention links to the independent states' WikiProjects. Maybe we could make a brotherhood (or sisterhood) among 'em - Wikipedia:WikiProject Serbia, Wikipedia:WikiProject Montenegro, Wikipedia:WikiProject Croatia, Wikipedia:WikiProject Bosnia and Herzegovina, Wikipedia:WikiProject Slovenia, Wikipedia:WikiProject Republc of Macedonia. Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. A mere Suggestion

I suggest all members take a look at the Order I've established at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject Belgrade. It failed because there aren't many members, and those who are members are mostly inactive - but it could work here; this WikiProject has a lot more members (and luckly, they're active). It might also be a way to prevent the fate of Belgrade's WikiProject catching this one. Well, I have a question about this Romanian city, and, unfortunately, there is no Wikiproject Romania, and this was the best I could do. If anyone knows: is this the same location as Buzău County, which is in the historical region of Muntenia? Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Tito - Stalin split

Leave Titoism as separate article on an ideology (as per Stalinism). Merge Informbiro into Tito-Stalin split because it resulted directly from the Split. If not merge, then take out parts that are duplicated from one article and leave them in the more appropriate article so as to create 2 distinct articles only briefly mentioning each other. Proposal: WikiProject Europe

Hi, I was wondering what the relationship is between this project, Wikipedia:WikiProject Eastern Europe and Wikipedia:WikiProject Southern Europe. You all overlap on the Western Balkans so I was wondering if you guys had defined your scopes with that in mind.

In addition, I was noting down the related projects for Wikipedia:WikiProject European Union and number of small European projects as I was going round. How do you guys feel about a parent "WIkiProject Europe" to link together as many European projects at the top (not merge, unless some fell the need to)? It could help discussion and cooperation between projects and possibly reduce overheads for the smaller ones. In addition for areas with no project of their own. Where a project has few members or is inactive, a common peer-assessment could help them move forward.

List of Slovenian language poets lists a poet as Aleš Šteger (a red link). We have a page for Ales Steger, which refers to him in the text as "Ales Šteger".

Question

A question: shouldn't we rename the WikiProject into "WikiProject Yugoslavia"? WikiProject Soviet Union does not have the word "Former" in it, neither does WikiProject Austria-Hungary. Come to think of it, I've never seen any former country WikiProject with the word "Former" in its name. Surely now that even Serbia and Montenegro is dissolved there is no question as to whether the country is "Former" or not. Indeed, I'd even go as far as to say it is very close to common knowledge among the general public. Apart from some meaningless (and unachievable!) goal of appeasing nationalist fanatics, I can't think of any reason why the WikiProject should keep this name. This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

Pages Needing Attention

Hello Direktor. If you would take a gander at this page: Mate Boban, I added some tags, just citations. If an article is citing references, good deal. If the article is POV, it is casting a shadow upon our mixed heritage as former Yugoslavians. I am willing to help on articles that have a POV slant when it pertains to the FROY, and others in between, which are finally starting to dwindle down.
