Some articles not appearing in quality/importance assessments

Achtung Baby and Moment of Surrender are not appearing in the quality/importance assessments for this project. Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of appears to be misbehaving, as well. Any ideas why?

There's a brief explanation here - WP:FAQ/Categories#Why might a category list not be up to date? The problem should have fixed itself by now. –Dream out loud (talk) 15:09, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Importance standards

The old WikiProject had a list of importance standards (which pages are top, high, med, or low), but I think that we should re-do them for this project. I deleted the old ones from the page, but of course I'd like to discuss it before implementing it. Here's what I think:

  • Top – Obviously the U2 article itself, plus all four band members, and the "most important" albums and songs (which would be further discussed on its own)
  • High – All remaining studio albums and singles, plus concert tours
  • Mid – All songs not already categorized, concert films, EPs, other albums/releases
  • Low – Any topics not directly related to U2, but owe part of its notability to the subject of the band (ex: Trash of the Titans, Anton Corbijn, etc.)

Other articles should not be included. With that being said, there are a lot of articles a part of the project that shouldn't be. I don't think that every single article that mentions U2 in some way should be included, and many articles should be re-assessed to see if they belong in this project. Please give me your thoughts. –Dream out loud (talk) 01:27, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

It sounds good to me, but the "most important" albums and songs seems a bit ambiguous. What qualifies something as top importance? What qualifies it as Low? I think that some songs which the band collaborated on but did not release under the U2 name (ex. "Do They Know It's Christmas", "The Ballad of Ronnie Drew", etc.) should probably fall under low class. MelicansMatkin (talk, contributions) 14:52, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

GA reassessment for Streets

I have posted a good article reassessment for Where the Streets Have No Name. You can see my reasoning in the listing. I think we should all pitch in and help clean this page up so it can keep its GA status. –Dream out loud (talk) 11:54, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

May want to take a look at Adam Clayton too; it's been about 3 years since that was made a GA, and it definitely needs a lot of work to stay at that standard. MelicansMatkin (talk, contributions) 05:06, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

Lee DeWyze's American Idol cover of "Beautiful Day"

There is currently a discussion underway at Talk:Beautiful Day#Lee DeWyze's American Idol cover on whether the cover of "Beautiful Day" by Lee DeWyze on American Idol should receive it's own section in the article. Comments are welcome. Melicans (talk, contributions) 01:17, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Merge discussion

A discussion has been opened at Talk:Original Soundtracks 1#Merger over whether to merge the articles on "Your Blue Room" and "Slug" into Original Soundtracks 1. Melicans (talk, contributions) 21:35, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Terrible layout

No offence to whoever revamped it, but this new layout is terrible and has been seriously irritating me for a very long time. It's impossible to edit any of the sections unless you go to the panels which, if you don't know where they are, gets very annoying very quickly. Hell, you can't even edit the List of members; is it any wonder there remain only three listed when it appears that we've closed ourselves off from any more additions? It's exceedingly user unfriendly, and I don't see why the revamp to these panels was even considered necessary in the first place. Can we at least figure out a way to make the various sections editable? It's a complete and unnecessary pain in the ass that seemingly serves no purpose other than to irritate and to make things as complicated as possible. Melicans (talk, contributions) 18:39, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

I'll look into adding obvious edit links to individual components of the layout. Y2kcrazyjoker4 (talk) 21:45, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
OK, I've added edit links in every place where they are expected. Hopefully, that alleviates your concerns. Y2kcrazyjoker4 (talk) 13:17, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
Cheers; it is much easier to use now. Melicans (talk, contributions) 22:37, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Deletion nomination for "Flowering Rose of Glastonbury"

I've nominated "Flowering Rose of Glastonbury" for deletion, as there is nothing to indicate this song has achieved notability yet. Please see the deletion nomination page. Thank you. Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talkcontributions) 17:34, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Setlists in tour articles?

I recently acquired the third (and most recent) edition of the book U2 Live: A Concert Documentary by De La Parra. It contains almost all the tour details from the early days to the Superbowl; the setlists are almost identical to that found on sites such as U2Gigs (although some setlists have been updated online since then), but in a book that can be used as a reliable source. There will be no fourth edition for some time as the author died during production of the third edition, although Axver of U2Gigs told me that it was possible he and Matthias would write the next edition in a few years time, which would make U2Gigs the online version of the book. Anyways, I am losing track and getting off of the point/suggestion I want to make.

Every setlist from the Joshua Tree onwards in complete in this book; the Unforgettable Fire Tour lacks a few setlists, and there are more gaps in knowledge the older one probes, but almost every setlist from the Unforgettable Fire Tour (and possibly the War Tour) onwards is included. What do people think about adding an additional column box in the tour date tables to incorporate all of the setlists. Everything from the Joshua Tree to the Elevation Tour could be added in this manner, and it could be kept shrunk for convenience sake using {{hidden begin}} and {{hidden end}}. I put forwards the suggestion only because with this book those details can all be reliably sourced. I recognize that it might be seen as cruft or as a long list of miscellaneous information, but I think that it might be worth having. What do you think? Melicans (talk, contributions) 06:32, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

For example, this could be what it looks like (note that the below setlist examples are not accurate, just a demonstration):
Date City Country Venue Set
2 April 1987 Tempe United States Arizona State University Activity Center
"Sunday Bloody Sunday", "Where the Streets Have No Name", "One Tree Hill", "Exit", "Gloria", "I Will Follow", "With or Without You", "Party Girl", "Pride", "40"[1]
4 April 1987
"Bullet the Blue Sky", "Running to Stand Still", "Pride", "Twilight", "The Electric Co.", "MLK", "Bad", "Where the Streets Have No Name", "October", "One Tree Hill", "New Year's Day", "40"[2]
What do you think? Few other artists have had their touring history chronicled as fully as U2; I think that this is something that would really be worth looking into, at least for The Joshua Tree onwards. If I'm not mistaken, the Vertigo and 360 Tour's are covered on the band's website, so pretty much everything from 1987 on (possibly earlier) could be added. Melicans (talk, contributions) 06:42, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
To be honest, information like this doesn't seem to be very encyclopedic. Wikipedia does not need to be a collection of everything. If there is an external website that already has an entire history of every tour and every song played, why not link to it instead of replicating the information on Wikipedia? A comparable example would be sports statistics tables for professional athletes. It seems to be a consensus that yearly stats tables not be included in athletes' articles and that instead, their stats are linked to externally (e.g. ESPN.com, Baseball-Reference, NBA.com, etc). I find setlist information for every show to just be overkill. Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talkcontributions) 21:24, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
I would read it... if nothing more than to satisfy some curiosities. However i think it is a bit much for WP. As much as i would appreciate it and could even help it would surely piss off someone else, kinda like the second half of my comment below on a quasi related matter. If one wanted to know they could just download most any concert or browse U2gigs. That said, if this goes ahead let me know where i can work on some.
I am actually popping in here because my watchlist was flooded with changes to every article on a U2 song thanks to koavf. Considering the band 99% of the time does the music as a collective and is credited as such is there really any bloody need to add a category for songs written by Adam on this fine sunday? For that matter Larry has a mere handful of songs outside of the band (that i know of) so would not these personal categories be "category cruft"? I sorely want to remove all of them but i don't use AWB so it would take me forever. If you don't want me hijacking a topic i'll just walk on. delirious & lost~hugs~ 04:44, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
I'm supportive of the lists of dates. Very informative. I'm happy with them on either the tour page or on their own pages. That this info is somewhere else is irrelevant. Indeed, according to WP:OR and WP:V everything in wikipedia must be somewhere else.
as for all the new cats, I agree it's overdone (and I'm surprised I still have quite a few u2 articles on my watchlist). --Merbabu (talk) 05:46, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
ps - if one wanted to remove cats, one could simply "rollback" the edits. --Merbabu (talk) 05:57, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
I'm also here because of the cats. I think adding Category:Songs written by U2 would be sufficient, and would allow things like All Along the Watchtower to only be in Category:U2 songs. Explicit entries in Category:Songs written by Bono could be reserved for the few odd cases like Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour) where there isn't a group credit, and then joined by a parent relationship to Category:Songs written by U2 (since every song written by U2 is also written by Bono). Ditto for the Edge.
As for the setlists, I understand the motivation and I'm almost always in favor of more information not less, but I'm against adding them. The tour date lists are already arguably borderline violations of WP:NOTDIR, the attendance and grosses figures for each date moreso, and a setlist for each date seems definitely across the line to me. Wasted Time R (talk) 10:57, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
Merbabu, I don't think anyone here is going to argue against the list of dates, it is the inclusion of set lists that seems to be the point of contention. Indeed, I think this information would violate WP:NOTDIR, WP:INDISCRIMINATE, WP:EVERYTHING, etc. Even though all information needs to be available somewhere else before it is added to Wikipedia, there is a certain threshold to what should and shouldn't be included. Set lists for individual shows, I believe, crosses that line. Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talkcontributions) 11:00, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
And for the record, I also do not like all these category edits. As Wasted Time pointed out, if you create a Category:Songs written by U2, you can include Category:Songs written by "x band member" as a sub-category to prevent these waves of editing. Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talkcontributions) 11:10, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
Lists of tour dates on the articles for the respective tours would be ok by myself. Separate pages purely for lists of tour dates tend to find their way to being tagged for out of project scope / general notability / afd. Set lists, while most certainly readily available and referenceable, would push the matter of including everything to its limit.
Category:Songs written by Bono would include songs such as Silver and Gold and Falling at Your Feet, and GoldenEye (song) were they to have their own articles. Oddly enough, for the sweeping edits of 129 songs edited on average 4 times (500+ edits) that flooded my watchlist last night GoldenEye was not categorised. :P Category:Songs written by Larry Mullen, Jr. would have Put 'Em Under Pressure if one is liberal in defining writing. But Adam did not write "Van Diemen's Land" and Category:Songs written by Salman Rushdie was not created for The Ground Beneath Her Feet (song). In hindsight i really should have split this into its own section instead of hijacking the setlists and treating both as a "too much?" discussion. Rolling back non-vandalism is outside of the permitted use of the feature, but it is tempting on these categories. If there are no songs specifically written by Adam and Larry does anyone want to get the categories deleted and create Category:Songs written by U2? Apparently there is the option to empty the categories outside of any process and have them deleted 4 days later.   So far i can find no other band who has categories for song writing by each member of said band. delirious & lost~hugs~ 21:10, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
Since U2 generally credits music and lyrics separately, someone could get ambitious and use Category:Songs written by U2 for the music and Category:Songs with lyrics by Bono (and the same sometimes for the Edge), akin to all the lyricists in Category:Songs by lyricist. Most of these are from the 'standards' era, however, although a few are Brill Building (Category:Songs with lyrics by Gerry Goffin) or more recent (Category:Songs with lyrics by Marilyn Bergman). This option seems like a bit much to me though. Wasted Time R (talk) 01:16, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

U2 3D copyedit

U2 3D just failed its first FA nom due to a needed copyediting. I think that the admins were a little quick to fail the nomination and didn't even give us a chance to fix it up. I personally think that failing the article because some words needed to be changed around was a little uncalled for and a few minor edits could have solved the problem. But anyway, a copyedit needs to be done and it should to be done by someone who hasn't contributed much to the article. After two and half years of working on the article I think I've done all about I can do with it, so I'm basically done editing the article. It seems perfect to me, but apparently the rest of Wikipedia doesn't feel the same way. So if the article is going to become featured, someone else on here (Wikipedia in general, not just this project) is going to have to step in. –Dream out loud (talk) 06:54, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Having followed the nomination, it seemed to me like the sections they cited for improvement were just select examples. Overall, I think they were correct in saying the article was in need of copyedit, which I attempted to do during the nomination (but alas, time ran out). Having been through numerous FAC nominations myself, the reviewers' stringency to pass the article didn't seem out of place. In any case, I will take another look at the article and try to review it from head to toe again. Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talkcontributions) 12:58, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Passengers article

What do we think about a Passengers article? I'm referring to a new article, separate from Original Soundtracks 1. I think we could add some new material to a new article that wouldn't exactly fit in the OS1 article. Discussions about how/why the project was formed, why the project dissolved, the group's live performances (as Passengers and later as U2), inspiration given/received (if any), etc. Of course there would be mentioning of the OS1 album in that article, there would be much more information not relating to the album. I'm willing to contribute if someone else starts it up, but only if we think it's a good idea. –Dream out loud (talk) 05:17, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

I started one in a sandbox during the failed FAC for "Slug", but life got so hectic for me that I haven't gotten around to doing any real work on it besides the infobox and one paragraph of text. I've been meaning to improve OS1 for the longest time too, but just haven't had enough time to really do anything about it... Melicans (talk, contributions) 16:07, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
I think a Passengers article separate from OST1 would be completely redundant. Anything that needs to be said about U2/Eno's experimentation can be included in the article about the album. Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talkcontributions) 17:30, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

U2 articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the U2 articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Anybody here able to read music?

By which I mean sheet music. I purchased an (official) book which has the sheet music for all the songs of The Joshua Tree; guitar and bass. I'm looking to add the information in it to "Mothers of the Disappeared", but of course I don't actually know how to read music myself. It's definitely the last thing the article needs before FAC. Anyone who can read sheet music able to help? Melicans (talk, contributions) 00:28, 28 October 2010 (UTC)

I never saw this post when it was originally made - but I'm willing to transcribe any sheet music details that you would want for any article on a Joshua Tree song. I'm not completely literate with sheet music, but I can probably pick out the important details. Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talkcontributions) 01:17, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
Ah, sorry, I missed your response. What I'm hoping to do is something like we did for "City of Blinding Lights" in the first two (or three if you count the lone sentence) paragraphs in Composition. Can you give me a quick email? I'll send you the details that way. Melicans (talk, contributions) 06:55, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

Merger proposal

I think that Hasta la Vista Baby! U2 Live from Mexico City and Zoo TV Live should be merged into PopMart: Live from Mexico City, and Zoo TV: Live from Sydney, respectively. Both albums are just album versions of the concert videos, and there isn't too much that can be said about them, except for the fact that they're fan-club exclusive releases. This makes sense because there is only one article for U2 Go Home: Live from Slane Castle, Ireland, despite there was a video and album release. –Dream out loud (talk) 19:06, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

I agree - if we were to expand these articles into FA, they would both describe the circumstances of those particular concerts and their recordings, and that would pretty much be duplicate information. Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talkcontributions) 01:19, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, no objections here either. Melicans (talk, contributions) 04:05, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

U2 3D FAC

U2 3D is still undergoing its FAC. It was recently started over by a user who could not "make any sense" of it, so all previous comments were erased. If you already posted comments or support, then please do so again because the FAC has basically been "reset". If you didn't get a chance to comment yet, please do so, I'd appreciate as a user and as a member of this project. –Dream out loud (talk) 21:39, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

I would throw my support in, but I think I've contributed too much to give a partial, un-biased vote. As such, I will refrain from giving my support in the FAC, but I will continue to monitor the nomination and help address any issues that may be identified. Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talkcontributions) 14:11, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
Have you left any messages at WP:FILM or WP:ROCK about the FAC? It can be a bit of a longshot, but sometimes that will attract more editors who will give their input. Melicans (talk, contributions) 06:57, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
WP:FILM has it listed on its list of FACs on its main page, so posting on the talk page there would be redundant, but I did leave a message at WP:ROCK. –Dream out loud (talk) 20:51, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

"Mothers of the Disappeared"

I've pretty much finished with "Mothers of the Disappeared". I think that all of the details that could be expected to be included in the article are there, so I'll soon be nominating it at FAC. I probably won't do that until March as I'll be away for a good chunk of time at the end of February, and the FAC process seems to take at least a month nowadays. In the meantime, if anyone with fresh eyes would be willing to give it a look over and many any tweaks or adjustments that they feel are necessary, it would be very much appreciated. Melicans (talk, contributions) 07:22, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

U2 360° Tour

Now that the U2 360° Tour has ended, I was able to get it featured under the "In the news" section on the Main Page. But the article has really deteriorated over time, and I know at one point there was talks of nominating it for GA-status, but I think it really needs a lot of work. I hate to see that this project is tagged as "semi-active", so I think collaborating on this article and getting it to GA-status would be a great way to get ourselves more active. –Dream out loud (talk) 18:57, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

I think first things first, we need to make sure the entire article is no longer in present tense, but rather in past tense, since it is no longer ongoing. After that, I think we need to make sure the setlist overview reflects the last few legs. Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talkcontributions) 12:20, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

"Exit" composition

I can't recall who helped me with the 'song walkthrough' in the composition section of "City of Blinding Lights" and "Mothers of the Disappeared" (I'm so sorry! I have a horrible memory!), but I've just recreated an article for "Exit" and would like to do it again. I have the transcripts but can't read music (I don't even know how to tell what the key is), so if someone who can would be willing to help me with this I would be eternally grateful. Melicans (talk, contributions) 01:46, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

Ditto that request on "One Tree Hill"; I have all the information we need for it, I just don't know how to read it. Melicans (talk, contributions) 18:46, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
Great job on Exit! Let's get a DYK nom for this. –Dream out loud (talk) 18:52, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

Great interview with Bono

Just found an archive of a great interview with Bono by Rolling Stone's Jann Wenner in 2005. The audio and text segments are different. Has some really cool stuff on Zooropa, and a few other things that might be worth adding. Melicans (talk, contributions) 20:27, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, it's quite an interview! I have exactly one copy of an issue of Rolling Stone from beyond last year, and that just happens to be the one. I've saved it for reference purposes, but it looks like now that this entire thing is online, it'll be even easier to use. Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talkcontributions) 04:39, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Good/featured topic

I think there is a really good chance of making both The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby good (or perhaps even featured) topic:

 The Joshua Tree  Achtung Baby
"Where the Streets Have No Name"  "Zoo Station"
"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" "Even Better Than the Real Thing"
"With or Without You" "One"
"Bullet the Blue Sky" "Until the End of the World"
"Running to Stand Still" "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses"
"Red Hill Mining Town" "So Cruel"
"In God's Country" "The Fly"
"Trip Through Your Wires" "Mysterious Ways"
"One Tree Hill" "Tryin' to Throw Your Arms Around the World"
 "Exit"  "Ultraviolet (Light My Way)"
 "Mothers of the Disappeared"  "Acrobat"
 "Love Is Blindness"

At first glance it doesn't seem like a lot of GAs/FAs, but "Exit", "Acrobat", "One", "ISHFWILF", and "WOWY" are all on the cusp of GA and would probably be promoted with minimal changes if nominated. "EBTTRT" and "WGRYWH" would probably get up there without a massive amount of extra work. The rest would take more time, but the information is almost certainly out there to get them all, even articleless "TTYW", up to at least GA. Is this something you guys want to push towards? Melicans (talk, contributions) 14:29, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

I'd certainly be up for it, although I have to admit I'm not very good (or interested) in expanding the "Live performances" sections of song articles. That seems like something you are much better at. We might get some good information for the Achtung Baby song articles after From the Sky Down is released. I've been busy these last few weeks, but I project having more free time sometime soon. Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talkcontributions) 20:15, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
From what I've heard (I don't know how accurate it is) there is some really good information in the film on Love Is Blindness, so that is definitely one I will be starting a sandbox for soon (probably after the weekend since it is Thanksgiving). Hopefully there will be some stuff on Horses, So Cruel, and Tryin' too. I'm surprised that there apparently isn't anything in FTSD on UTEOTW, but there's probably more than enough coverage in secondary sources for that particular song. Melicans (talk, contributions) 20:57, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
I've seen the film now. There are clips of U2 performing So Cruel, EBTTRT, Zoo Station, and Wild Horses, but no discussion on them. Acrobat, Ultraviolet, TTTYAATW, UTEOTW, are not mentioned at all. There is a little bit of discussion (about 2 minutes worth) on Edge's failed marriage set over him singing Love Is Blindness. There is a little bit on The Fly, mainly discussing how Bono created the persona so he could sing it so honestly (describing it as his armour). Mysterious Ways is featured a little bit, but in the time when it was known as Sick Puppy and only while explaining how One came about, which is the highlighted song in the film. The majority of the film doesn't actually talk too much about any of the songs they came up with in the end. Most of it is the misinterpretation of Rattle and Hum by critics and how they really felt after its failure, how that led them to Hansa, and the creative difficulties they had there until One came about. One, The Fly, and maybe Love Is Blindness are probably the only songs we could add information on from the film; possibly Bono and Zoo TV Tour too since it talks about the creation of The Fly alterego. Melicans (talk, contributions) 15:46, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

A few more have become GA/FA since this section was started, which I've updated above. But on that note, a few of them ("So Cruel" and "Acrobat" in particular, maybe "Exit" and "Love Is Blindness" too) are heavy on the theme and very weak on the critical response. There's probably a lot of stuff I've missed (particularly from music journals), so if anyone has any reception that could be added to them it would be awesome. Melicans (talk, contributions) 06:17, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

TO INPUT THE WIKIPROJECT

Please, Join the discussion to input the Wikiproject. It's been a while since it might be consider as inactive and there're a lot of things to do around here.Miss Bono (talk) 13:24, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

To Miss Bono: please, add a wiki link to this discussion within your future messages and also a wlink to this talk page in the {{Project U2 member ping}} template,[done] in order to make it easier to access to this discussion and to the WP talk page[done]. Thank you. And, YES, this is the right place for opening a discussion on how to revamp WikiProject U2.

One thing I have noticed is that, although Wikipedia is a community and it should be based on teamwork and collaborations, many WikiProjects (WPs) are disused. You know, WPs' aims and goals are to improve, mantain, and update articles about this or that subject. So now the questions are:

  1. What are the tasks that need to be delivered?
  2. How can a member of the WP participate, contribute, and help the project?

Point #1, WP's tasks, aims, and goals are in the WP's main page. Are there any new tasks, new things to do, that can be covered by this WP?
About point #2, membership and contributing to the project, a drive (for example for reassessing articles) should be a temporary "buffer solution", but its effect would disappear within a couple of months. How about inviting members to adopt one or more articles? Also, making one ore more articles the collaboration(s) of the week, fortnight, or month, with the goal of improving Stub-Start-C Class articles's quality, but also to cleanup, add sources, wikify (fixing issues related to WikiSyntax), and expand articles aren't a bad idea.
I will check out if there are currently active editors who are editing articles belonging to this WP, and (eventually) send them invitations to join this project or messages.
Cheers. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 11:26, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

Current Collaboration

Bono and The Edge appear to be still not of GA status. I think getting both those articles there should be this Project's primary aim for now. Any thoughts (on whether or not to do it; or how to do it) or anyone willing to give in a hand for the same? If 2-3 of us can get together, both these articles will be there in no time. Roll call: April 2013

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

Welcome to the WikiProject U2 April 2013 roll call. In order to keep us up-to-date on our number of active members, we will have this thread up for the entire month of April (2013), allowing editors to add their signatures to the list. This way we can gauge our number of active contributors and update the members section accordingly. We have already taken the liberty of going through the list and moving a number of editors to the "Inactive" section. All of these were editors who had either been banned, retired, or had not made an edit to Wikipedia in over a year. Having a monthly roll call will make this easier.

  • It's also worth noting that there is a Category:WikiProject U2 members. If you have the project userbox on your user page, then you appear in the category automatically. If you choose not to place the userbox on your page, you can still add yourself to the category by placing [[Category:WikiProject U2 members]] on your user page. As a courtesy, if you are leaving the project, retiring from Wikipedia, or simply no longer active in the WikiProject, please remove the userbox from your user page. This will remove you from the category and help the project to keep its active membership list up-to-date.
  • If you have not already done so, please add your name and interests to the members section of the project. Longtime members should revisit the page, as it has been revised. Consider adding a brief summary of your U2-related Wikipedia interests next to your name. This assists with collaboration and allows other editors to seek out help in particular subject areas.
  • To add your name to the roll sheet, simply add your signature #~~~~ to the list below. Feel free to introduce yourself briefly. Thank you. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 09:00, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

Vaillancourt Fountain

I have moved Vaillancourt Fountain out of my sandbox to article space. U2 performed at the fountain on November 11, 1987. Comments and improvements are welcomed. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 19:48, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

It is GREAT!! :D---- Also I would prefer a pict from the 1987 concert :D Miss Bono (zootalk) 11:58, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
Hello Cullen, it's very interesting, thank you. I've moved the See also section above the References section and added the geolocation coordinates (please, check out if it points to the correct place). I'm not sure if Template:Infobox Sculpture{{Infobox artwork}} or {{Infobox monument}} can be used on this article. I'll investigate it. Happy editing!
(upadated: 14:28, 6 May 2013 (UTC)) – Is this fountain listed on the US National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)? Some internet resources say it. If it is true and this fountain is listed on the NRHP, then you can add {{Infobox NRHP}} to its article (as per Buckingham Fountain). I've tested the page with some tools at toolserver (WebReflinks, Reflinks, Checklinks, and Dab solver) and it is PERFECT!

WP Newsletter for May 2013

To all the members of the WP: U2. Please, leave a comment about the Newsletter for this month (suggestions for the next newsletter will be well appreciated ) Thanks.  Miss Bono (zootalk) 13:07, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

Rather than "monthly", I think these newsletters will be more like "every few months" (bimonthly, quarterly, semi-annual, or annual) or "as needed", because, in my opinion, there are few news and not enough content for a monthly newsletter. We also need a list of subscribers to the newsletter, but, I would like to see how this discussion proceed first. Happy editing! –pjoef (talkcontribs) 14:53, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
I just added our newsletter to the Category:Wikipedia news which perhaps will give us more visibility. (It now shows up at the newsletter's end, just like any other article). There are 76 mostly project newsletters there. There is also another page called Wikipedia: News, which we can add ourselves to; perhaps when we decide how often we will be publishing. I agree that we probably don't need to send something out every month. Thanks ! Fylbecatulous talk 02:04, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
Sending the Newsletter has to go with U2 News... I agree with Pjoef. But remember, u2 is about to release a New Album, and their gonna be in the flash for a while! ;)  Miss Bono (zootalk) 12:06, 8 May 2013 (UTC)

WP U2 New barnstar

To all members of the project. Please leave a comment about the new WP U2 barnstar. Thanks.  Miss Bono (zootalk) 14:27, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Looks great, excellent use of different icons from throughout the band's career! Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talkcontributions) 20:52, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
It's very creative, but unfortunately the three images are all copyrighted. I apologize but I had to put it up for speedy deletion since it violations Commons' policies on non-free images. –Dream out loud (talk) 21:46, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
I will create a new one without the imagesand will ask Cullen328 if he can upload it for me. But what else can remember to U2 more than the icons through the band´s career. I need some fresh Ideas....thanks-- Miss Bono (zootalk) 21:57, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
Dream out loud, I'm not sure, but is it possible to replace the image with a blanked version (a transparent PNG, the star with the target but without the three images, or File:Original Barnstar Hires.png) while we are waiting for the new version (which will surely come :D)? In this way we avoid Cullen getting a file deletion on his log.←(I was too late with this; the file has been deleted.) The word "U2" could be an (easy and simple but not so very "artistic") alternative to the three copyrighted images. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 07:19, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
I am working on the new barnstar. It will be ready for next week. I promise. Maybe for today, I don´t know yet.  Miss Bono (zootalk) 13:04, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
Hello everyone! Here's Barnstar 2.0  . --Antonu (talk) 06:04, 15 May 2013 (UTC)

General reference list

Older users will remember this but for those new to the WikiProject, I wanted to bring this general reference list to your attention. It is a list of resources that are especially helpful to consult when building articles on U2 topics. It also includes pre-filled reference templates, so all you basically need to do is copy-and-paste into the article (minor editing-such as page numbers for books-may be necessary). I hope that you find it useful. Melicans (talk, contributions) 01:06, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Looking forward: article pushes to FA, and cleaning up the garbage

There are several U2 articles which are relatively close to featured article status, in my opinion (or at least, they were prior to my relatively lengthy absence). These could, I think, be promoted without an excessive amount of difficulty. They are:

  1. U2 concert in Sarajevo
  2. "Stay (Faraway, So Close!)"
  3. "Exit"
  4. "So Cruel"
  5. "Love Is Blindness"

Most of these are already close to the FA standard; in the case of the song articles, all that they are missing is composition information (as presented in "City of Blinding Lights", "Mothers of the Disappeared", and "One Tree Hill" for examples on what is needed). I can't read music beyond identifying beats per minute and the time signature, so if anyone is able to assist on that front it would be appreciated.

In addition, while the project is looking at bringing Bono and The Edge to GA, I'd like to see Larry Mullen, Jr. and Adam Clayton given a Good Article Reassessment. Both were promoted in September 2007, five and a half years ago, and the standards have changed dramatically in that time. I think a GAR would be the most effective way to see what the articles need to actually be at the Good Article quality threshold. Thoughts? Melicans (talk, contributions) 03:06, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

I think that's a great idea. Thanks for join!! I hope you are healthy now!! Cheers!  Miss Bono (zootalk) 12:28, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

I think it is a good idea to update the Tasks section at Wikipedia:WikiProject U2/rightpanel by adding this "work plan" (or parts of it), and also to add these pages (all or part of) to the collaboration of the fortnight department. Unfortunately, I cannot help with the music, but I will have a look around and if I find something I will let you know. Cheers! –pjoef (talkcontribs) 14:32, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

Form and Style in the Music of U2

I have found a 2008 thesis that may be of help:

Endrinal, Christopher James Scott (2008). Form and Style in the Music of U2 (Thesis). Paper 564. The Florida State University.
Code:
{{Cite thesis |type=Thesis |title=Form and Style in the Music of U2 |url=http://diginole.lib.fsu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1394&context=etd&sei-redir=1 |last=Endrinal |first=Christopher James Scott |year=2008 |publisher=The Florida State University |series=Paper 564 }}

It was submitted to the College of Music of the Florida State University in 2008. I gave it a quick look and it seems to have some interesting information about designs, sonic and stylistic characteristics, musical complexity and analysis, ... in U2's music. Happy editing! –pjoef (talkcontribs) 11:12, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

Can someone post the information for me??  Miss Bono (zootalk) 12:18, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

Improving

A few months ago, I asked Mabeenot, how big must be the changes in a WikiProject to request for an interview and he told me this:

Re: Importance of a WikiProject

As to your question about requesting an interview with a WikiProject, the U2 project has been done before so you'd need a major shakeup in the way the project is run and/or a big increase in FAs and GAs since the time we last interviewed the project. Alternatively, if the project is hosting a major collaboration with other projects or sponsoring a contest, we might be able to feature it sooner. Larger, highly active projects can pull off big initiatives like this, so they have more to talk about and typically get repeat interviews. –Mabeenot (talk) 01:35, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

So, I was thinking about gathering all the improvements we have had until today and add them to this click me! list. We can see better what we have done so far and gain organization -which is the best thing in a team- More organization, we work faster. Also, I was thinking about this Melican's section Looking forward: article pushes to FA, and cleaning up the garbage, it is a great thing to work on, but I can't do it by myself. I am going to ask Y2kcrazyjoker4 and Dream out loud since they seems to be experts in GA and FA and have been working on U2 related articles for a long time. There are plenty of things to do and I will need help. So... thoughts? Miss Bono [zootalk] 13:41, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

I would love to push some articles to FA/GA, although I think we should focus on the group's more prominent songs/albums. Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talkcontributions) 13:52, 2 August 2013 (UTC)
Oh, I was thinking about taking all U2 articles to GA... We have enough material. And we only have 2 GA Albums Zooropa and The Joshua Tree -which I think we can taken into FA. Miss Bono [zootalk] 14:02, 2 August 2013 (UTC)
Y2kcrazyjoker4 what should start with? Miss Bono [zootalk] 14:32, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

Proposed initiatives

There are 3 specific articles I have put a lot of time into and I'd really like to see promoted as part of this WikiProject's next initiatives.

On the other hand, I did a full copyedit of Slug (song) and that still wasn't enough for it to pass its third FA nom. I've decided not to put more work into that article myself, but rather see if any other editors are interested in working on it.

I will love to help! I will take a look into U2 by U2 to see what I find about Zooropa. Miss Bono [zootalk] 14:42, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
Dream out loud, I can copy-edit U2 Live at Red Rocks: Under a Blood Red Sky. It is one of my favourite articles and the concert is of utmost importance to me personally. When you say "copy-edit", that sounds a bit vague. What in particular needs to be fine tuned?? Was there a to-do list somewhere? This would make a fine FA... Fylbecatulous talk 23:04, 7 August 2013 (UTC)
There's no to-do list of any sort. Nothing in particular needs to be copyedited, just the whole article in general. I've already submitted a request with WP:GOCE, but I think we should work on it more as well. The article just needs to be read over, nothing needs to be added at this point. If anything, I feel that some overly-detailed content may need to be removed or shortened. –Dream out loud (talk) 05:23, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
As far as Zooropa (song) goes, I've already added all the content from U2 by U2. I think we need to clean up the composition sections and also give it a copyedit. Then it should be ready to go. –Dream out loud (talk) 05:24, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Upcoming Signpost Interview!

WP U2 in the Signpost

The WikiProject Report would like to revisit WikiProject U2 for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions, so be sure to sign your answers. If you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Have a great day. –Mabeenot (talk) 13:10, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
