Sources: Global Good News

The tagline on the Global Good News website is "Good news from around the world". Looking over the site, it's apparent that it is published by the TMM, but the actual relationship does not appear anywhere. According to the "Whois" entry, the technical and administrative contacts for globalgoodnews.com are located at:

ggn-editors@Maharishi.net
GlobalGoodNews
1770 Brahmanand Saraswati Blvd
Suite 31
Fairfield, IA 52556

That is the same address, though not necessarily the same suite, as the US headquarters of Maharishi University of Enlightenment, Global Mother Divine Organization, and Maharishi Global Administration Through Natural Law. The closest thing to an "About Us" page, "About Global Good News", does not list any personnel, facilities, or affiliations.[1] How should we regard this source? Is it an authoritative and official self-published source for all entities of the TMM and its officials?   Will Beback  talk  23:37, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Some of it is simply reprinting newspaper and wire service reports from sources such as Reuters.[2] Other parts of it reprint press releases from various TM Movement Organizations, which claim copyright for the material being printed, and indentify the organizations claiming the copyright.[3] The first may or may not involve copyright violations; no idea whether GGN has the right to reprint wire service stores. We should be able to go straight to the wire services for those. As for the others, they should be treated like any other press release from any other organization. If it was picked up by a reliable secondary source, great. We should use the secondary source. Otherwise, these are basically self-serving primary sources written by flack weasels, no different from the press releases written by flack weasels at any other organization. One difference: I've never seen another organization claim copyright on its press releases. Bizarre; it almost guarantees that noone with reprint it, which is exactly the opposite of what press releases are intended to do. We can use them for what the organizations claim about themselves, carefully identifying that the source is a self-published press release not picked up by any other reliable news source. Fladrif (talk) 00:03, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for that feedback. As for the Reuters issue, GGN claims to have permission:
  • Copyright 2010 Reuters. Reprinted with permission from Reuters. ... License # REU-5918-MES.[4]
As for the rest, it appears you're saying that they are press releases from the TMM, and usable as such for TMM entities.   Will Beback  talk  00:24, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
That's what I'm saying. If it's a press release with a TMM Organization copyright, we can confidently write that X organization issued a press release on Y date claiming Z, citing GGN. Fladrif (talk) 00:52, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
OK, but many of the items there aren't attributed to a particular organization. For example: [5][6][7][8] Would it be appropriate to cite those as press releases issued by GGN? While we shouldn't use those as sources for people or entities outside the movement, is it OK for use on any named people or entities within the movement?   Will Beback  talk  01:11, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
GGN is a dba of Maharishi University of Enlightment [9], a North Carolina corporation [10]formerly located at Heavenly Mountain in Boone NC, and now located in Maharishi Vedic City.[11] So it's an official TMM Organization, and self-evidently connected with the Mother Divine and/or Purusha organizations, which do PR for the TMM, among other things. Fladrif (talk) 01:14, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
Good research. I'm not sure quite what the Maharishi University of Enlightenment is, but the pictures on their minimal website only show women. In any case, MUE and GGN appear to be an official entities of the movement, and GGN should probably be considered an official source for the overall TMM.   Will Beback  talk  01:29, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
The Restated Articles of Incorporation at the NC SOS state that its purpose is post-secondary education for women. Web site claims it issues degrees from bachelors through doctorate level. Definitely an official TMM organization. Fladrif (talk) 01:38, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
TM.org has a list of "resources".[12] It says: "The Global Good News service of Maharishi's Global Country of World Peace brings the good news from all areas of society to our whole world family." So they consider it a part of the GCWP.   Will Beback  talk  02:12, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
I don't know if you are interested in unsourced but neutral personal knowledge, but Global Good News is definitely part of the TMM, as is the Country of World Peace and Maharishi Open University (MOU). Historically, the TMM was amateur and happy with that status. Frequently, professionals in various fields would offer their services, but the TMM typically would use them only if they were really needed (example: the professional MUM Press and all of its predecessors), or just to humor them or keep them happy. Universities and other organizations were set up as initiatives from MMY or by individuals with his blessing; I, not a professional, attended the first meeting to discuss forming a University (called MIU), representing either physics or mathematics, I forget which). TMM organizations and projects took some time to reach professional status, and some may remain amateur operations. The desire was to do whatever was acceptable to society to spread TM and improve the world, with the understanding that not much effort was needed. This attitude of restful creativity (which may actually be the best approach when dealing with something natural that helps the world) may be at the root of both the disinterest in professionalism and the great interest in setting up a variety of projects and organizations. I hope this helps confirm what you've already deduced. Some of the pro-TM editors would be able to give you quick answers to questions like this one. David Spector (talk) 16:56, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Transcendental Meditation movement articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Transcendental Meditation movement articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

I might consider asking the articles on the Transcendental Meditation technique and the Transcendental Meditation movement to be included. Any other opinions? John Carter (talk) 16:30, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
Agreed, -- Cirt (talk) 20:48, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
I also agree.   Will Beback  talk  00:13, 30 September 2010 (UTC)

New article: MERU, Holland

Material was scattered across many articles, so I've created MERU, Holland to provide a central article to cover the HQ and the university.   Will Beback  talk  00:10, 30 September 2010 (UTC)

Vedic Management

Vedic Management lacks reliable sources. Does anyone here think it can be saved? Are there any good sources for the topic?   Will Beback  talk  07:51, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

I removed the self published sources. Here they are in case anyone's curious.  Will Beback  talk  09:08, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
Looks like it should be deleted.(olive (talk) 14:39, 23 January 2011 (UTC))
Agreed. The article should be deleted. If there is any salvagable content, and I have my doubts about that, it could be merged in another article. Fladrif (talk) 16:53, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
OK let's give it the boot! --BwB (talk) 17:40, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
Gone.   Will Beback  talk  08:56, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

Golden Domes

I keep forgetting about this project. In any case, it may be old news by now but we now have an article on the Golden Domes of Fairfield, Iowa. It's as complete as I could make it, but I'm sure that there's more to add if sources could be found.   Will Beback  talk  09:07, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Update of project page

I have updated the project page with these edits [13][14] It was necessary since the title to the TM template has changed since this project was begun. If you disagree with anything I've done. Let's discuss it and agree on appropriate changes. Thanks! --KeithbobTalk 03:40, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
