Discussion on the naming of stub templates relating to this and other Australian city wikiprojects is in progress at WP:WSS/P#Australian cities. Feel free to comment. Grutness...wha? 01:40, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

You now have a brand new {{Hobart-stub}}, which feeds into Category:Hobart stubs! Hope it's helpful! Grutness...wha? 10:00, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team cooperation

Hello. I'm a member of the Version 1.0 Editorial Team, which is looking to identify quality articles in Wikipedia for future publication on CD or paper. We recently began assessing articles using these criteria, and we are are asking for your help. As you are most aware of the issues surrounding your focus area, we are wondering if you could provide us with a list of the articles that fall within the scope of your WikiProject, and that are either featured, A-class, B-class, or Good articles, with no POV or copyright problems. Do you have any recommendations? If you do, please post your suggestions at the listing of all active Places WikiProjects, and if you have any questions, ask me in the Work Via WikiProjects talk page or directly in my talk page. Thanks a lot! Titoxd(?!? - help us) 18:26, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 16:27, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Following expansion

Tasmania historically has had many divisions due to tourism promotion maps, local government divisions, government service boundaries, etc - like north-west, north and south (Telstra sensis phone books?) - sometimes just north, south - west. In the case of the project - it would be good to get a sense of what divisions this project might take - actually there is a good article in regional rivalries between the three regions for a start. It would be good to see what others might think on this SatuSuro 02:50, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Postcodes and area codes broadly follow this. 002 -> 0362 takes in Hobart, New Norfolk and the Tasman Peninsula, 003 -> 0363 takes in Launceston and the northeast and 004 --> 0364 takes in Burnie, Devonport and the north and west more broadly. Postcodes - 70 and 71 cover the south, 72 the northeast and 73 and 74 the northwest and west. I'm not sure quite where on the Midlands and Bass Highways the dividing lines are though in a cultural sense (i.e. where they stop drinking Cascasdes and start downing Boags :) Orderinchaos 14:44, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
Woa - you forget the west coast in all of this - you tread on very sensitive ground here.... SatuSuro 14:49, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

W

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 20:09, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

PLEASE NOTE

To anyone considering creating stubs for this project - please read Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting carefully - regarding processes involved - so as to avoid issues with WP WSS D (which can mean both discovery and delete :) ) SatuSuro 02:21, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Geography article naming

OK I am just starting to update Tasmanian articles, especially Mountains, but am perplexed as to why the standard for Tassie is to use 'Name (Tasmania)' and not 'Name, Tasmania' like in the rest of Australia. Anyone like to fill me in. Personally I think the later is far more preferable. Nomadtales 02:51, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

See names like Avon River (Western Australia), which originates east of Pingelly, Western Australia. The comma is for suburbs and towns and cities, the brackets are for geographical features. Good question to ask, took me a while to figure out and I'd created a few wrong ones before I did so :) Orderinchaos 03:27, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
Is this listed somewhere as a wikipedia standard? Nomadtales 03:31, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
There was en extensive discussion about all of this at WP Australia Places project about this-check the archive/talk page there- take care I created a lot of them (ie west coast ones) - maybe we need to go to personal talk on this one! SatuSuro 04:30, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Mountains#Naming_conventions SatuSuro 04:44, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

I think part of the problem is that WikiProject Mountains, WikiProject Rivers, WikiProject Cities, even WikiProject Australia places, etc. all have their own naming conventions.
The "Name, State" format is used for all cities, towns and suburbs (except Hob, Mel, Adel, Syd, Bris, Canb). the "Name (State)" format should be used where the article would not normally have the state as part of the name - which is most geographical features. The brackets allow the pipe trick to work when linking as well. -- Chuq (talk) 03:47, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

Deletions - Tasmanian School Stubs

Can be proposed and slip by without some projects even noticing - please see the main page foe current list of school article deletions. SatuSuro 10:48, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

I note that in the article List of schools in Tasmania, all schools are wikilinked. If the consensus at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Albuera Street Primary School is for deletion, it may be worth reviewing the wikilinks in the article and limiting to those schools likely to be notable. Having said that, MrsPlum makes a good point that private schools seem to have an easier time establishing notability than state schools. I am not sure how this potential bias can be overcome but one line stubs on state schools is probably not the way to do it. --Mattinbgn/ talk 01:43, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

It would appear there are issues being raised at Chuq's and Mrs Plums talk page - it would be well worth trying to keep the issues outlined at this page if possible please SatuSuro 03:24, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

I am happy to centralise discussion here and agree it is more appropriate to have all discussion in a central place. In the AfD discussion, Chuq suggested that should the consensus be to delete the articles, a list similar to List of schools in the Australian Capital Territory with redirects for each school back to this list may be a good way to go. I support this suggestion.

To clarify my position, I would have no problem with an article on every school in Tasmania, provided that the article meets Wikipedia guidelines on notability. The articles as written did not and I did not see much chance that they ever would. If the articles were to be expanded to meet these I would be happy to support keeping them. As mentioned by other editors in the AfD discussion, this is not a reflection on MrsPlum who created these articles in good faith from redlinks at List of schools in Tasmania but a one line stub article is possibly not worth having.--Mattinbgn/ talk 03:50, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

Hey there good work SatuSuro bringing everyone back here. I was mainly interested in making sure MrsPlum recieved some guidance, my main point was to direct her to this project page. I don't want to get too involved in arguing notability of Tasmanian schools - I'm neither an educator nor in Tasmania. I would review articles / proposals as an impartial, getting-there editor if anyone wants.Garrie 03:54, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

I've thought something over. Independent schools need to individually come toward meeting WP:CORP - most of which, if you try, is pretty easy.
On the other hand - the whole Tasmanian Education Department is a single organisation, which easily meets WP:CORP. Each school they operate is like each post office, each bank branch, or each McDonalds resteraunt - individually, non-notable, but with a few exceptions (which I am sure can easily be identified).
I hope this explains the view that there is a bias toward independent schools - I think really, each education provider is being covered, it's just that some education providers (Tas Dept Education) operate many schools, while other education providers operate just one school.
Of course, I might be wrong in that view - it was pretty much a random thought.Garrie 04:17, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
Suggestion for immediate future
Following recommendation at WP:LOCAL (I know, inactive, no consensus .... but it makes sense) - if anyone wants to add information regarding schools mentioned in the list above, the information should be added to an Education section in the relevant suburb article. If the section grows significantly (with well referenced material), it will be because the school is in fact notable and needs it's own article.
PS, consensus is a weird beast. Not too long ago, use of RamBot to create short stubs from statistical data was considered a good thing. Apparently the wheel has turned somewhat.Garrie 04:26, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

Just for reference, Tasmanian public schools are split into about six divisions/regions, which would be a suitable size for splitting the list if it ever gets too large. I'm not sure which of redirecting to towns/suburbs or redirecting to the schools list is the better option. I would edge towards the schools list at this time. -- Chuq (talk) 05:14, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

The general consensus at the WA project, if it helps, seems to have been that primary schools are not notable, while high schools usually are. I'm aware of several primary schools failing AfD but no high schools of which I'm aware. We don't have a single article for any non-metropolitan schools in WA. Not by any means hard and fast and I'm sure every editor would have their own opinion but we've got only 3 primary school articles of which I'm aware, and all of them are independently notable. In the recent Hamersley FA it talks in the Hamersley article itself about Glendale and East Hamersley primary schools, giving some context to Hamersley itself but with no seeming need for an article for either. Orderinchaos 06:26, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

The elusive Mrs Plum is here. I am sorry if I've caused a stir. I'm interested in moving to Tasmania, hence my interest in the schools page. I would love to help with whatever project emerges from this discussion. Based on the initial work I did on the primary school pages, I would suggest it would generally be difficult to create useful articles on most of the schools listed. Perhaps an article on Tasmanian Primary schools could list them (without 'red links'), perhaps by region, and comment on any significant aspects of primary schooling in Tasmania e.g. Govt curriculum standards. Just a thought. MrsPlum 07:56, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

I think that is an excellent idea and a great way to move forward with these schools. While each school is of course unique, information on curriculum and other items are likely to be consistent across the board. There should be plenty of scope to develop a first rate article. --Mattinbgn/ talk 08:18, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

I have created a little prototype table at User:Mattinbgn/Sandbox - Tasmanian State Primary Schools. If anyone has any thoughts about what else should be included or removed please say so, otherwise I will replace the existing state primary school list on List of schools in Tasmania.--Mattinbgn/ talk 09:53, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Great idea. It looks good to me and much better than all those 'red links'. It will also cover the main details that would be included in a basic school stub. Most details can be collected from the Education Dept school directory: MrsPlum 08:19, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
I have added the table. Now we need to fill it! --Mattinbgn/ talk 12:28, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Please note Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ouse District High School - it is really a central school (combined K-10), it is a micro-stub and has made no effort at notability. To boot, it's first version was really vandalism anyway.Garrie 00:15, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

Ouse

Just a notification - created a stub for Ouse, Tasmania. Orderinchaos 06:56, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

Albert Hall, Launceston

I just created the stub for Albert Hall, Launceston in order to eliminate a redlink at the Albert Hall disambiguation page. While digging for references, I came across historic photos of the building on the Tasmanian State Library website, to which I've provided an external link.[1] However, I've no clue about Australian copyright with regards to old photos, or government ownership. Does anyone know if copyright prevents us using these shots directly within the article? --DeLarge 22:11, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

They're clearly old enough that they should be public domain, but we're on difficult ground because the State Library doesn't appear to list the year of publication, so I'm not too sure. Rebecca 01:21, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Tas Fauna Lists

Hi all. I've put up three new Tasmania specific lists: mammals, birds, and butterflies. The mammals and birds are well populated - in that the species all have at least a stub page. Butterflies species, on the other hand, have hardly any entries. Any help creating stubs would be appreciated.KeresH 22:49, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Category:History of Hobart

I just found an empty History of Hobart category. Is there enough content to fill this or should it be deleted? -- Longhair\talk 16:22, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

There are a considerable number of articles that would be more suitable with this cat than the simple Hobart cat - it can be populated easily as there has been minimal interest in tidying up the history of hobart article or the issues that surround it - SatuSuro 00:30, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

Suggestion

If no one has turned out the light on this project yet, or closed the door - why not trying to have a history of hobart plan for the rest of the year? September to December for those who are not students with exams? - the main article is wanting a major revamp - and there are surely some really good subsidiary articles that have not been given a history of hobart category tag - (maybe most of the catgeory hobart ones need changing anyway) - anyone? Like some arts in this project - maybe a response by november :) ? SatuSuro 01:28, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

Sorry to leave you in an echo chamber. I've been busy with real life, but I should have time post the election(s) (I do a magazine for the Tasmanian Greens, plus other sundry stuff like artwork and stuffing envelopes). I'd be happy to grab some more photos if anyone has specific shots/subjects in mind. CheersKeresH 11:03, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

Tasmanian wine

Howdy! As part of the Wine Project, I developed the Tasmanian wine article from the stub Tasmanian wine regions. I was wondering if I could get the Tasmanian project's input and maybe the inclusion of any relevant details that I missed. Thanks! AgneCheese/Wine 21:14, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
