November

So it's November 1st. I have archived the last 2 months of this talk page, updated the collaboration page to reflect this months collaboration, Stage lighting instrument, and I have moved inactive participants to the inactive section of the participants page. Keep up the good work guys. Over the last month it looks like we've got a lot of talented people involved in the project so let us know if you need any help with a page. November Roll Call

So it's a few days late, but here it is. November roll call time! Therefore, let's see who's active and what they're currently working on. Personaly, I've been loading in and teching shows since the beginning of the month, so I've only been paying attention to what's coming in on my watchlist. JWGreen

I am currently just doing watchlist stuff, i'm really busy with school... I just finished working on a musical here, and am now starting on the Concordia Christmas Concert... Had an all night call last night (fun). I will be working with 6 High End Systems DL-2's for the concert, so I might be able to start that article eventually, but probably not untill christmas break. I will continue to to watch my watchlist untill then, and might occasionally contribute other stuff. I am also available for questions, and can find stuff in my textbooks to cite stuff if needed -JWGreen 02:53, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

I'm in the same situation, getting geared up for holiday shows (I wonder how many people are working on a production of Christmas Carol right now?) Once we're past Thanksgiving I should be able to get back into some editing. I'm working on Terminology and am happy to help with cleanup on other stuff. I've just finished the fitup for the set of our christmas show, just LX to go in and then tech the thing! KeepOnTruckin

SO I just finished a show and am striking that now. Next i am on a huge choral concert with reharsals starting in the begin of December and going until Christmas. I decided to look at laptops for christmas so maybe I can do a little more mobile work if I get one. Meanwhile I got 3 tech theater textbooks so I will look thru those for some references. I have just finished my (hopefully) last show for the year. Just finished a producton of caberet that I rigged, focused, plotted and oppereated almost single handedly. I havent got a picture of new selecon pacific follow spot yet, but I have a old Selecon fres at home that I just fixed and I will take a digital camera when I drop it back at the theatre.leaderofearth

Too Much ETC?

Further to my comments on the discussion page of Lighting control console, does anyone else think that ETC seem to be getting disproportionate representation in this project? I'm aware that they are a major manufacturer, but is it really right that Source Four has it's own page, where the Strand SL, Selecon pacific et al does not? Is it proper that ETC have three links on Lighting control console, one of which is to a page that does not yet exist? Comments please!

An article on the Selecon pacific has been requested, and I am planning on working on it over the holidays, I don't have enough knowledge of the other fixtures to start anything notable. As for the control console page, I think that list is a list of consoles that editors have used or know of, and I am not sure what to do with it. My only idea right now, is to add ones you feel are missing from the list. The amount of information on ETC is because of the availablity of the information, and because many people have worked with the equipment. -JWGreen 22:37, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Strand and Selecon certianly deserve their own pages, and thats somthing we are all working on. ETC is so iconic and revolutionary, i suppose that is why there are already so many articles on them. Many articles are yet to be created in many areas. Stagecraft has been a shortfall in Wikipedia articles for quite a while. --Wforlines 17:02, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

There's an IP user with the above address who keeps pasting: "Professional Stagehands (IATSE)" into all sorts of places. I think they mean well, but the additions don't make any sense - particularly in places like "Stagehand" where it's pretty obvious that we need more detail, not generalities. `Bryson430 20:58, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

I just think that the person is trying to push IATSE stagehands. While I'm all for IATSE, I'm not sure there's any actual job entitled "Profesional Stagehands (IATSE)" which is why it might be inapropriate on List of theatre personnel for example. Times like that, I don't think they're trying to keep a NPOV. When it's added to the "See also" section I think it's more of a grey area. But regardless, let's just try not to get the IP banned because I have the same host as them. ;) --Lekogm 02:13, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afriad) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Sub Pages Removed?

Does anyone know why the sub-pages for the various fields were archived/redirected? Morydd 18:20, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

I archived the ones linked from this talk page as "sub talk pages" and redirected them here because there's really no need to spread the discussion out that much. The point of a WikiProject is having a centralized place of collaboration, and while sub talk pages can be good, they can also be needless. If we really need to isolate discussion we can also use the talk page of the main article covering that topic, and it's always a good idea to re-connect with the article talk pages whenever it makes sense. Hopefully this WikiProject will become active enough to need such sub talk pages, but for now it would be better to focus on just one. -- Ned Scott 21:11, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Article Guidlines

So I was looking at the Project Page today and noticed that we're only achieving one of the two goals listed, "Improving Wikipedia's coverage of Stagecraft." With new articles still being created I got to wondering, "Did we ever set guidlines for articles?" And apparently we never did. So I'd like to discuss creating guidlines for creating articles. I guess that really depends on what things we think might need standardizing. General topic articles probably don't need a lot of new guidelines outside of the normal WP:MOS, but maybe stuff that gets more specific, like types of equipment, etc, would be good. -- Ned Scott 04:22, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Well, I bring this up because, for example, some articles use "theater" and some use "theatre". I feel that there are a lot of inconsistencies and that by creating some sort of guidelines we could avoid them. February Roll Call

Well, it's been a few months since I, or anyone, has done a roll call. So I figured what better time than the shortest month of the year to do one. Since the last role call we've had 17 changes to our participant list and it'd be good to see what we're all doing. I've had, and still have, a lot of personal things going on in my life which have kept me away from getting too involved in things. But now I'm trying to get back into the swing of things. I just finished working on "The Miracle Worker" as an electician and am now starting on lighting for Shakespear's "Comedy of Errorrs" I am also now taking a course on lighting design, and consiquently have another textbook that I can cite from. I've got an increased courseload this semeseter however, so I'm not doing much editing for now. KeepOnTruckin

Working on 4 1-acts (SM of one and lights on the rest) until end of february along with lights for Cinderella. Then workign on Jekkel and Hyde, doing lights and set for that. Intending to use 4 Mac 550s and color changers in the catwalk. THere are 22 scene changes I think and jsut 1 intermission. We'll probably do a turntable on center stage, put curatins on the calipers to do a few scenes there, and I had an idea last year to dress techs in costume so they could go out on stage and move stuff around. I suggested they wear uniforms that say REPO on them. Here on WP, I am going to get Stage lighting instrument to good article status. Remember to get lots of references from textbooks and here and here THeres a boatload of refs at teh second one. Everyone needs to check it out. KeepOnTruckin 02:49, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Leaderofearth

I have been enjoying the theatre off season, and working to support my speedway and theater habit. The next show I know I will be involved in is a production of Ragtime, followed by South Pacific and Hair. Thrown into the mix could be a Gang Show and Grease and maybe some rigging of a high school production of High School musical. Is there a need?

I tried starting an article on Stage-Brite dimmers, but had very little information to go on, so my article was flagged. I was looking to see if it should be a US-Theater stub, but wandered across this Stagecraft page. There's already an article on Dimmers, but doesn't go into the different brands. I'm confused where to put my 4 sentences of information. Stage-Brite dimmers were built in Minneapolis in the 1970's, and several Minnesota theaters still use them. I'd like others to contribute obsolete dimmer information, and similar articles could be about Strand Lighting (very limited information in that article), Major systems, etc. Framerotblues 06:50, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Unfortunately not very much, what I do have consists of about 4 sentences worth of material. They weren't around long, just thru the 70's, and then got bought up by Sterner Lighting in '82, who makes outdoor lighting fixtures for buildings & highways. They were unique in that they used convection cooling (no fans), took up a huge amount of space with very plain blue steel cabinets, and used a 0 to -28vdc control voltage. Most analog dimmers of the time were using 0 to 10vdc, like Electro-Controls. They used firing cards like old Strand CD80 racks, but the firing card was built into the dimmer, unlike the CD80. I would say that you shold just make a section on the dimmer page about it, or reasearch other brands of dimmers that are no more and make an article about old dimmers. Lekogm 13:25, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

I'd say that compiling information reguarding old dimmers, and just old equipment period would be very useful. After all there are plenty of articles about old computers and such on Wikipedia. Very little can be found on old equipment on the internet, but I know there are plenty of old manuals in the oddest places at old theatres everywhere. I don't think we should start individual articles for everything, but a category could be dedicated to obsolete equiment. I'll start work on this. --Wforlines 17:22, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

ETC Source Four PAR

I recently created an article on the ETC Source Four PAR, which was promptly deleted by an admin who thought it was advertising. He's being fairly persistent in this, but I don't have any recent trade pubs to cite their use, aside from the blurbs in Live Design about who is using what for which show. Does anyone here have anything specific they could add to the article? Or perhaps make the case to User:Sasquatch that he's off base here? --starX 22:23, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

I've identified that the list of LDs on the Lighting Designer page was getting out of hand. Can you all take a look and see what we should do with it? He's an American Screenwriter. Stagecraft basically brings to life the worlds screenwriters like William Monahan envision by constructing the scenery, lighting, and costumes as interpreted from their pages. They intermingle.-BillDeanCarter 01:26, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

Reflector (Stage lighting)

Does anyone feel that reflector is worthy of it's own article. Different types of instruments have their own reflectors, and it seems to me that it would be better to discuss the type of reflector used within the context of the instrument that it is used with. I think you just answered your own question. If every light has it's own type of reflector, than the article for that light should cover the type of reflector that the unit has. Just my $.02. --Lekogm 18:13, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

There's the rub; not every instrument has the same components. Again, I think it would be better to deal with the components within the context of the specific article. --starX 14:29, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Citations

Earlier today I went around to a number of articles listed as Bs and Cs under our project and gave them "missing citation" tags. Is there anyone here with a deeper knowledge of lighting/etc. books, magazines and websites willing to start going through and collecting citations? Some of the articles would totally be Good or even Featured quality if cited. Polymathematics 02:28, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
