Unreferenced BLPs

Throughout 2010, many Wikipedia editors have worked hard to halve the number of unreferenced biographical articles (UBLPs) from more than 52,000 in January to under 26,000 now. The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons has assisted in many ways, including helping to setup a bot, which runs daily, compiling lists of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Skiing by Country

I would be interested in seeing more articles along the lines of the Skiing in Australia article which provides a history and outline of skiing in that country. I think the format is interesting and logical, but very few other countries are written up in this way. I'd be very interested in a Skiing in the United States, Skiing in France articles for example, but I don't have the knowledge to do it myself.Ozhistory (talk) 05:12, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

New indoor ski slope

LeisureDome, Weston-super-Mare is a proposed 240m indoor ski slope in south west England, which has just been granted planning permission - meaning it is highly likely to go ahead. Articles on downhill turns

I am in the process of adding a large number of articles on "gear that made a difference" in downhill. These include the Head Standard (metal), Strato (fibreglass) and VR-17 (torsion box) skis , Lange and Rosemont boots, and Look and Marker bindings.

These introductions in the 1950s and 60s radically changed the art of downhill. With each introduction, the skiers ability to roll the ski onto the edge improved, to the point where the sideways motion of the knee is now the main way to make the skis turn, the carve, where the sidecut shaping of the ski drives the turning motion. This is as opposed to the Christie, where the primary turning force is generated through sideways skidding of inner edge of skis over the snow.

So as a side effect of adding these articles, I ended up coming across a series of articles on downhill turn techniques, and if I'm not mistaken, they are completely misleading, if not downright wrong. These include the entire series of articles starting with Snowplough turn, through Stem (skiing) into Stem Christie and finally into Parallel turn.

In every reference I see even today, "Christie" refers to the skidding of the ski over the snow in order to generate sideways forces and cause the skis to turn. So even the classic Snowplough is, in effect, a form of Christie turn. At the other end of the scale, one can, of course, use the Christie technique to parallel ski - I did it for the better part of two decades, at least according to the definitions I was told.

In the articles, however, "stem" refers to the motion of the ski outward into the V, and Christie seems to be the same thing. Yet the Christie article definitely implies there is a difference, which I can't see when I read the descriptions. Finally, parallel turns are described solely as an edging technique, which is what I refer to as carving. By the definitions I've always used, there are four distinct main downhill turns:

• Snowplough (really a type of Christie, but different enough to warrant a separate article)
• Christie (with sub-sections on snowplough, stemming and paralleling)
• Carving
• Telemark

I'd like to gather comments on this, because as I see it the current articles appear to be very wrong. Or I'm very wrong. I'd like to see which is which.

Articles Lauberhorn and Hahnenkamm, Kitzbühel

It has been proposed already in 2006 that article Lauberhorn would be splitted into two separate articles for the Alpine skiing races and the mountain. And I think that could be done also for the article Hahnenkamm, Kitzbühel. What's your opinion on that, do you support?

I support because currently it's like Wimbledon tennis championships would be included in the article about the Wimbledon district. On the other hand, seems that no Wikipedia has a specific article about the Lauberhorn mountain, if there's an article called "Lauberhorn", it's about the races. But many Wikipedias have spearate articles about Hahnenkamm mountain and the races. --August90 (talk) 13:37, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

The resort has been approved and the mountain resort municipality chartered, even though it has no residents and nothing's been built yet......linking to the muni article; there doesn't seem to be a need for a separate resort article at this point; that day will come when it's been developed, as corporate info and skiing info probably should be separate from the municipal article.Skookum1 (talk) 12:30, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

Problematic "ski area" article

Bella_Coola_(ski_area) was just created, which I noted when it showed up on the Templates {{Ski areas and resorts in British Columbia}}......aside from having some bad geography (the Cascade Mountains in Canadian usage end at the Fraser, despite an older tradition of using them for the Coast Mountains as well), my problem is that this isn't really a ski area but more an advert for a giving company; should it just be retitled to the company name and deal with as a business article? Otherwise should this notion be used also for the dozens of other heli and snowcat operations about the province? The athlete appears not to be notable. X-Games participation is not considered an automatic indication of notability (as an Olympic appearance would be). Oh no. XC-skiing is huge! Much larger than alpine/board/jump/aerial combined. Think about it. Much of the Northern tier has little mountainage... just hillage. Most folks live in the flatlands and can't get anywhere near a skilift or board arena. Plus it is free-ish for most peeps. Just step out the door, slap on the slippery slippers and get your mid-winter exercise in your own neighborhood. Like track&field, they have way more XC events, plus the biathlon with the ski-shoot-ski-shoot-ski profiles. Much of Scandanavia and all around the Baltic plus way back into the Russian Federation states go ga-ga (not Gaga) for the XC events. I'd vote "High" on this, unless you are just trying to make this an english language, west-oriented only article. –HacksawFW– my edits

Ladies/Women

I have noticed that across various articles concerning the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup women are sometimes called women and sometimes called ladies (although consistently within the articles). As men are still called men (and not gentlemen), I think "women" should be used consistently across the topic. I don't know where else to place this suggestion. Input? I see what you did there ;) . So far I changed the FIS_Alpine_Ski_World_Cup article and the 2011_Alpine_Skiing_World_Cuparticle as well up to 2015. Also the FIS_Ski_Jumping_World_Cup article, the 2014–15_FIS_Ski_Jumping_World_Cup article and the Mogul_skiing article. I wanted to write down here what I've done so far and will continue the work on another day. I only changed text mentions of ladies, not titles of references. In 2019, the FIS formally announced that they were making a switch from Ladies to Women See Link: https://www.fis-ski.com/en/international-ski-federation/news-multimedia/news/new-fis-terminology-sees-women-replace-ladies They approved a joint proposal of the Gender Equity Working Group, the Sub-Committees for Ladies´ Cross-Country and Alpine Skiing, as well as the Athletes Commission to change the official FIS terminology from “Ladies” to “Women” - ONLY in the English language. You obviously don't follow FIS sport competitions. FIS officially uses terms Men and Ladies in all result and ranking lists of all sports (ski jumping, alpine skiing, cross country, snowboard...), simple as that. It would be great if you undo all your changes. If anything term women in subpages should be changed to ladies if bothers you that much. You are both right. In 2019, the FIS formally announced that they were making a switch from Ladies to Women See Link: https://www.fis-ski.com/en/international-ski-federation/news-multimedia/news/new-fis-terminology-sees-women-replace-ladies They approved a joint proposal of the Gender Equity Working Group, the Sub-Committees for Ladies´ Cross-Country and Alpine Skiing, as well as the Athletes Commission to change the official FIS terminology from “Ladies” to “Women” - ONLY in the English language. This change does not apply for French or German, where the previous FIS terminology will continued to be used, mirroring the terminology of the IOC using: “Women, Dames, Damen”. Alpine Ski page

Hello folks, I was looking at the various pages related to ski turns and types, and noticed that there isn't actually a page for "parabolic skis" or even "alpine skis" at all... This is leading to some strange situations, like a huge amount of industry wide historical information being squirreled away on the Elan SCX page, when I think if you take a look at it, would be much more valuable in a general page. How hard will it be to just C&P most of that Elan page into a new page on alpine skis, or add to carve turn ? 208.100.172.164 (talk) 19:46, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi. I've read on WP re "tube-lifts", yet I can't see anywhere that describes them. Would anybody have time to remedy this?

Infobox skier

A change was made a few hours ago to {{Infobox skier}} that changes the World Cup link from the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup to the disambiguation page FIS World Cup. Is this infobox only supposed to be used for ski jumpers, or is it for all skiiers? A quick sample of the articles the template is used on shows a good portion are ski jumpers, but some are from the other five disciplines. -Niceguyedc ^{Go Huskies!} 09:29, 6 September 2015 (UTC)
