Template talk:Architecture in Portland, Oregon

Project members are invited to discuss the future of Template:Architecture in Portland, Oregon. I have removed hotels from the template and created Template:Hotels in Portland, Oregon. Similarly, I removed theaters from the template and created Template:Theatres in Portland, Oregon. I think we should eliminate the Architecture template altogether, which is subjective (what are the criteria for inclusion?) and not particularly helpful. There are not similar Architecture templates for other cities, but there are similar Hotel, Theatre, etc. templates for many cities. Thoughts? ---Another Believer _(Talk) 19:23, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

• I don't have a real strong feeling, but it seems to me that Architecture is a more encyclopedic topic that Theaters, Hotels, and Sports Venues, all of which seem more tourist guidebook fare. Keep building the topic- and neighborhood- specific templates and perhaps lists and categories, and then maybe think about eliminating this template. YBG (talk) 21:38, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
  • But, at least these more specific templates can incorporate all notable subjects of a particular building type. The buildings included in the Architecture template seem completely arbitrary. Any NRHP site could be considered a "historic building", and there are many other museums and entertainment venues than the ones listed currently. The same could have been said for the Hotels and Theatres… some were included but others were not. Are there any templates project members feel should be created? Government buildings (or, maybe just a Government of Portland, Oregon template with a buildings section?), or architecture firms? Seems to me the transportation entries could be moved to templates specific to airports, TriMet or MAX, etc. I do like grouping the tallest buildings together, especially since there is a corresponding Wikipedia list for Portland's tallest buildings. It seems to me the Architecture template should be placed within articles generally about Portland as a whole or its architecture: Portland, Oregon; Architecture of Portland, Oregon; Tourism in Portland, Oregon; and possibly Visitors Information Center (Portland, Oregon). I looked in category:buildings and structures in Portland, Oregon for other candidates, but there are few overview or central articles for each subcategory.

I think the architecture template should include all the individual architecture templates. Each sub-template should only be in the articles enumerated. Probably there are many more templates needed which would be appropriate like for category:residential buildings in Portland, Oregon‎. —EncMstr (talk) 04:03, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

Are named collections of features suitable articles?

Thomas Creek (Oregon)‎‎ is like many articles I have created. It helps identify a feature, alerts one to its ambiguity (or lack thereof), and locates it.

A well-meaning editor identified it as a disambiguation page and made some of the edits necessary to convert it, including removing it from category:Streams of Oregon and WP:WikiProject Rivers.

The purpose of this page is disambiguation though, yes? I have not scrutinized each of the edits made to the page recently, but I would not expect to see a disambiguation page in a category like "Streams of Oregon". I would expect to find Wikipedia articles for streams. I haven't looked up the relevant guidelines, but since there are actually zero articles about any creeks named Thomas (I note with dismay that this article started as a Doncram special--i.e. kind of a useless coatrack to hang Z.C.B.J. Tolstoj Lodge No. 224 onto [not sure why it matters that the building overlooks Thomas Creek (Linn County, Oregon)])...I think this should still be in the streams cat. I'm also not sure that it's a problem to be in the Rivers project, but the the Rivers project folks can make that call. I think the best course of action is to write up a stub on what appears to be the most notable Thomas Creek--the Linn County one with two covered bridges and a ZCBJ lodge, yank the bridges from the table, and put the article back in the streams cat. Barring actual policy and guidelines on this, of course. The disambig folks would probably have a fit over this though. As a practical matter, when I'm looking for streams to write about, I sometimes look for redlinked streams in existing articles such as List of rivers of Oregon. I would be inclined to duck the policy arguments about lists and dabs by moving the Thomas Creek (Oregon) data into the "List of rivers of Oregon" and then deleting the separate Thomas Creek list. If agreement to that could be reached here, I would volunteer to move the various Thomas Creeks into correct position in the longer list. I would also volunteer to create a short article about the Linn County Thomas Creek, as Valfontis has suggested. Someone else would have to delete the Thomas Creek list when the time comes. It seems to me that maybe these articles are NOTDAB but rather set index articles. Interestingly, the example given at the latter link is List of peaks named Signal Mountain. Perhaps marking them as such would alleviate some of the problems? Thoughts? YBG (talk) 00:21, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

If anyone needs a little project, the mayors of Category:Cities in Oregon probably need updating after the past election. We need an 78th Oregon Legislative Assembly article as well as updates to the House races for Oregon legislative elections, 2014 and the ballot measures for Oregon state elections, 2014. Too funny

This is only tangentially related to WP:ORE, but I wanted to share it with someone. I noticed an Oregon high school with an article at ja.wikipedia, so I wondered how many Oregon schools were represented there. So I used chrome's translate facility to navigate to the category page Oregon Education. Chrome nicely translated the page for me, including the 'alphabetical' subheadings -- ka-ki-ku-ke-ko and the like. Well, many of those subheadings can be translated, so Westview High is categorized under "Cormorant" (う) and Beaverton under "Facial" (ひ) and the entirety of district 48 under "Following the fire" (ひ の続き, not sure what the kanji is doing in the 'alphabetical' header). Somewhere in America is a high school whose mascot is the Cormorant and whose Japanese name begins with "う". That would truly be funny! Hopefully, someone in WP:ORE finds this interesting. Horse meat packing in Portland

I was just reading this pricenomics article on eating horse meat and stumbled across this: "On July 19, 1895, the first-ever industrial horse meat packing plant opened in Portland, Oregon. Armed with $10,000 worth of machinery for “slaughtering, packaging, and shipping meat,” the plant set about shipping thousands of tonnes of meat every week. “The selling and eating of horse meat is very repulsive to the average American,” admitted its owner, “but it is not so clear that it is forbidden by the law.”"

It's possibly haunted, it's definitely on the NRHP, and it's very interesting. An expert on the topic, @Richard R. Roth:, just added a great deal of information to the article but it's not formatted for Wikipedia. My first impulse is to revert it all and ask the author to start over. Category:Mayors of places in Oregon

This category caught my eye. In Oregon (unlike many states), I believe it is not possible to be a mayor of any place other than a city; Oregon doesn't have towns, etc. (There are now hamlets in Clackamas County, but they don't have mayors.) So. I suggest this category be moved either to one of the following:

• Category:Mayors of Oregon cities
• Category:Mayors in Oregon

I hear ya, but unfortunately this is part of a larger category naming scheme. For my part a) I don't like upsetting the Category folks and b) in the past WP:ORE has gotten a bit of grief on the Wiki for doing our "things look different here" thing (i.e. not sticking to the pattern). List of historical buildings and landmarks in Portland, Oregon

This passed AfC as Portland Historical Buildings and Landmarks, which is troublesome. I don't think anybody from this project has really looked at it. • Agree. I think the National Register of Historic Places provide a good/comprehensive list of well documented historic places...including ~500 historic buildings in Portland. Buildings listed in this article either duplicate sites on existing NRHP lists; or if they're not on a NRHP list, their historic notability should be seriously questioned. Having received reviews is not nearly enough to establish notability for an individual restaurant, in my opinion, unless you can cite multiple reviews from national publications (as opposed to regional newspapers such as The O); nearly all restaurants receive reviews. Even one or two New York Times-level reviews would not be sufficient, but several such would be. I also don't believe inclusion in a "best of" list is enough, unless it's from a national publication (or maybe multiple regional publications). Frankly, I'm disappointed to see this from an editor I respect. I still don't think Otto's Sausage Kitchen, the article on which came from the same experienced editor, is notable, and I said so on this page when it was created. Thanks for your kind words and for voicing your concerns. Regarding Otto's, I agree that more work on the article is needed, but I disagree about the restaurant being non-notable. See the talk page for additional sources, which I have yet to incorporate into the article. The problem is, I started constructing the article with the wrong sources, which is why the References section currently looks ridiculous and completely biased.

I am curious, though, what do you think about articles like Country Bill's, Gypsy Restaurant and Velvet Lounge or Rimsky-Korsakoffee House, all of which were/are local and mostly covered in local sources? In my opinion they meet notability criteria and make great Wikipedia articles. I so respect you as an editor and value your opinion. Perhaps my notability standard is too low, which is why I am thankful to have this space as a sounding board. But, I still think I could make decent Wikipedia articles for many of the aforementioned restaurants. I'm not really interested in creating restaurant articles but if that's your or someone else's thing, go for it. Personally, I do think the to/do list should include mostly topics of more general Oregon interest, especially to a newer or casual project member. (The restaurants are very Portland-centric.) Someone who is looking to do something for the project might do better picking something off a list that for sure has notability, like the stuff with a gazillion incoming links at Wikipedia:WikiProject Oregon/Redlinks list, which is already linked in "to-do", and not have to deal with the demoralizing process of having the article they started get marked for deletion. Old dead guys might not be everyone's thing either, but I think to-do should really be "topics of (historical) importance to Oregon that really should be created" aka "what has The Oregon Encyclopedia scooped us on that we should have also?" That's just my opinion, but traditionally that's how the to-do list was used. On the other hand, since it really isn't being used anymore, why not put something in it? The current list does seem to need some curating, however. Some pruning and maybe split out the restaurants so stuff like Portland Rescue Mission and Salmon Street Springs don't get lost in the shuffle. YMMV. Valfontis (talk) 22:36, 18 December 2014 (UTC)

It seems like an article like Restaurants in Portland, Oregon would fall in the middle of the notability spectrum and probably satisfy both sides. By not naming it List of restaurants in Portland, Oregon, it would best cover the entire restaurant scene and naming the establishments with local notability (cited of course), though most entries would not be linked because the nature of restaurants is rather like—I don't know—bathrooms and restrooms in a house: They are not usually anything to take note of, unless missing.

There is a wide range of comparable articles, but none come close to what I would hope to see. The closest is probably List of restaurants in New York City, especially the pizzaria section. There are also:

• Lists of restaurants: fetile hunting ground to find good examples
• List of restaurants in London: a counterexample
• List of restaurants in Barcelona: better than London, but a far cry from what a good article should do
• List of restaurants in Lagos: almost worthless
• List of restaurants in Hawaii: ditto
• Restaurant Row (Manhattan): Maybe should be an AfD?

Our Portland article should definitely mention farmers markets, food carts, and the little-known fact I read in an in-flight magazine in the 1990s: Portland has more restaurants per capita than any other city in the U.S. (or was it world?). Of course we should cover the most written about restaurants, especially if there isn't enough material for an article on that restaurant. It could also mention the number of Burger Kings, McDonalds, etc. restaurants. The Barcelona article gives the Michelin star rating. The year a restaurant opened might be a good, verifiable surrogate for the impact a restaurant has. I can think of lots of things I would like to see when choosing a restaurant: cuisine, awards, number of vegan/vegetarian options, seating capacity, price range, difficulty of getting a table, but those have numerous editorial problems. —EncMstr (talk) 02:04, 19 December 2014 (UTC)

I've done almost zero research on the subject, but a 2012 article in The Oregonian appears under the headline: "Portland No. 10 among U.S. cities with highest concentration of restaurants". I like EncMstr's suggestion as well. When I read the list of suggested articles above, my first thought was, "but routine restaurant reviews are explicitly excluded from proving notability", so probably most of them are not notable. After spending too much time perusing the archived talk pages and page history of WP:NCORP, it seems that the "routine reviews don't establish notability" rule was there for many years, and even passed a talk page discussion, before being removed earlier this year by a single editor without discussion. I've reverted that removal, so it's there now, but we'll see what happens. In any event, I would suggest that most of the above restaurants are at best marginally notable, delicious though they are, so a list or a broader article would seem better to me. Historic Oregon Newspapers

I just saw a note from the Keizer historical society that the UO's Historic Oregon Newspaper archives has added Smoke Signals, the paper of the Confederated Tribes of the Grande Ronde, and the Chemawa American from Chemawa Indian School. The latter goes back to 1914. The whole archive is an amazing free resource and now has over 100 historic newspapers from all over the state scanned and OCRed. Kitzhaber biographical blurb at Oregon Portal

By chance, I just discovered that the "Selected biography" entry on John Kitzhaber at the Oregon Portal was very badly out of date, referring to him as as a "former governor" and not even mentioning that he became governor again in 2011 and continues to serve in the office. I made some quick edits to correct the biggest errors, but I don't have much interest in editing articles about politicians, so the blurb still needs attention. However, in light of current events (February 2015), generating a lot of controversy around Kitzhaber and Cylvia Hayes, it's probably best to remove this entry entirely from the "Selected biography" list, temporarily – but that's not very simple to do for Portal items that are randomly selected from a list. Ridge, Oregon

The former Umatilla County town of Ridge, Oregon, is not represented here. I wonder if enough information exists to start an article. McArthur says, "Located about 12 miles southeast of Pilot Rock. The name of the post office was taken from the location of the post office, located on the watershed between Birch Creek and Butter Creek drainages. A sawmill was also located there. The post office operated from 1882 and 1906." RoadsideThoughts has a Ridge page. And many members of the Oregon Ogles died in Ridge, although this fact may not be useful.

Of some interest is the change in political climate in Umatilla County, where John Gurdane was elected to the Oregon House in 1894. Gurdane was a Republican from Ridge, and the county was staunchly Democratic at that time. The town of Gurdane, Oregon, is not here either. McArthur says of Gurdane, "Located about 16 miles south of Vinson, Gurdane is named for John S. Gurdane, a pioneer settler of Umatilla County. A post office was established there in 1890. Gurdane was a member of the Oregon State Legislature." Any thoughts? Geirfuglasker (talk) 01:57, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi Geirfuglasker, good question. At first glance, I think either of these would be a bit of a stretch for their own articles; I think you would need an additional high quality source or two to establish notability. You could perhaps start an article on John Gurdane, though, since he was a legislator -- and maybe some of the info about the town named after him would make sense there?

The shifts in political affiliation in Oregon around that time are of interest to me, too. From William S. U'ren and John H. Mitchell (the scoundrel! See also 19th Oregon Legislative Assembly) through George W. Joseph and independent Julius Meier, things seemed pretty turbulent in Oregon's political parties from about the civil war through the 1930s. If you ask me, if they're in OGN, then Ridge, Oregon and Gurdane, Oregon seem much more sufficiently notable than, say, Modeville, Oregon. The only Oregon "town" article that has been deleted was Blue Bucket Cow Camp, Oregon and I had a hand in that, despite being WP:ORE's resident expert on Podunks. I hope that helps. Here is a book on the early political parties in Oregon from 1843-1868 that might be interesting. Update on the towns of Ridge and Gurdane: For unclear reasons, McArthur's notes for his 1928 edition included these towns, but they were purged along with other towns in the 1944 edition. OK, OK, I'll admit to a little hyperbole ;) Just trying to keep the COTM active. (For newer members, our collaborations have been pretty active in the past.)

• One of the better examples is the Eugene Register-Guard article, now a Good Article, which was mostly built up during a collaboration here;
• Our regular collaborations were a primary subject for a peer reviewed study that concluded that COTM-type programs were a good way to build community and help new users stay engaged. (I can find the link if anybody's interested.)

Lately I've been working on Wikisource and Wikimedia Commons more than Wikipedia. It's worth knowing something about those projects, as they can offer a great deal to Wikipedia.

I just blogged about how to find and extract high quality scans of photos from old (public domain) books, for use in Wikipedia articles or elsewhere. I used the works of Joseph Gaston as an example; if you look at his Wikisource Author page, you'll find links to his works, highlighting lots of photos. The ones that are already uploaded in high resolution are in wikisource:en:Category:Centennial History of Oregon. To the right are some of the "before and afters" where I have been able to add improved photos. (You'll need to click into the bigger versions to see the difference.) I've also added new photos where we didn't have them before -- for instance, William Reid (an architect of Oregon railroads), photos of earlier Oregon State Capitol locations (see talk page), John H. Couch.

I hope this blog/video demonstration is useful, and it would be great if others could explore and find useful images in these books. Sure, happy to help, especially since I just jumped through these hoops a few days ago. Images of works of art created post-1923 (I think?) are not allowed at Commons. They may be uploaded here at ENWP to be used locally under fair use rules, however. I rarely upload Flickr images taken by others, but see an example of a Flickr upload here. Otherwise, if you took the photo, you can upload using the "Upload file" link on the sidebar, then clicking on "This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use". Under "Non-free use rationale", choose "This is a depiction of a copyrighted three-dimensional work or building" then complete the other fields as appropriate. I recently uploaded images for Alluvial Wall, Echo Gate (image link), Ghost Ship, Stack Stalk and Vera Katz, so any of the images shown in these inboxes should show you the tempates/info to add to the images. That's a very cool photo, good find! I believe that if it was published without a copyright notice before December 31, 1978 (as it probably would have been, since the source was the Sheriff's office), that it might indeed be in the public domain. I looked through all the Oregonian pages from their first two days of coverage of the crash, but all I see are staff photos -- I don't see that photo listed anywhere. Do you happen to know if it was published in any newspaper?

I am pretty sure that is a share-alike license suitable for upload to commons. In the last few months, I have uploaded two photos by other people and both were deleted. One was the starlight parade grand marshall, even though the page said it was cc-by-sa. I think the zealots at commons made a mistake on that one. The other was a photo of a shark fence on Flickr which restricted modification so the deleter (deletor? deletionist?) deleted it as "not free". —EncMstr (talk) 04:23, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

Fair use images cannot be uploaded to Commons. This includes works of art created past (I believe?) 1923, hence why I was trying to upload just here at English Wikipedia. A while back a bunch of the outdoor sculpture photos I had taken were deleted, instead of being transferred to ENWP, so now I have to photograph them again. Sometimes, an image of sculpture/artwork can't be uploaded to Commons even if the photographer released the image under a free license. That's because the copyright of the artwork depicted sometimes overrides that free license. I'm not sure what determines if that's the case here or whether you can upload it to Wikipedia under fair use. Fair-use images have to meet the criteria at WP:NFCC. Hello, I've added proposed factual edits to the talk page of Radisys, a tech company based in Hillsboro, Ore and part of the WikiProject Oregon. The updates are factual and include third-party references. I added them to the talk page instead of making the edits myself because have a direct COI and I want to avoid overstepping my reach and violating any rules. Is it possible for an editor to take these edits under consideration and then move forward with making the changes? Question: The sculpture Holon is dedicated to someone. If a work of art "honors" an individual, does this justify adding the article to Category:Monuments and memorials in Oregon? Suggestion

Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! @JonathanHopeThisIsUnique: I would have to see a more specific proposal. I didn't check out the examples of "good" vs. "bad" pages (again, links would be helpful) but I imagine the "bad" pages are because the groups aren't very active. WP:ORE's front page likely needs some updating, but I would probably dig in my heels if it was suggested we had to standardize it some way. We've set the place up to be useful for the active members. If for some reason the page makes it hard for new people to figure out how to contribute, we should certainly address that. WP:ORE is not as active as it once was, but if there is a need to standardize project pages, we should start with the inactive projects. But keep in mind, that I believe my prior research with trying to locate Dayton items showed the addresses in Dayton changed after their big listing binge. Sherwood train trestle notable?

Does anyone have a sense of whether or not the train trestle that was destroyed by fire in Sherwood yesterday is notable? On the news last night, the anchor mentioned the bridge had historical significance and was built in the 1880s. Googling "Sherwood train trestle" results in numerous articles about the fire, but I'll have to dig deeper to see if there is more information about this bridge. Category:West Haven-Sylvan, Oregon

As part of my continued effort to categorize Portland articles by geography/neighborhood, I created Category:West Haven-Sylvan, Oregon, which is a CDP and not a Portland neighborhood. I added the parent category "Portland metropolitan area" to West Haven-Sylvan. I would consider it inaccurate. For instance with Providence St. Vincent, Beaverton is literally across the street, and in general Beaverton is closer to many parts of the area than Portland. Radisys (again)

Over at Talk:Radisys §§ Factual updates​ and Following up on request from L dozer, folks with a COI are asking for updated information per a request made back in June. This was discussed by EncMstr and tedder at WT:WikiProject Oregon/Archive 24 § Proposed company updates. I note that Aboutmovies made some significant contributions that led to a DYK on July 14, 2009.

To me, both the proposed additions and the existing article seem like so much marketing-speak. Nevertheless, I'm appreciate the fact that the proposers recognize their COI and are trying to do things right. I started to try, but my eyes just glazed over. YBG (talk) 04:59, 28 October 2015 (UTC)

It is looking increasingly likely that the discussion will end with a Merge consensus, which, resulting in:

combining	category:Rivers of Oregon	(6 subcategories	and 156 pages)
and	category:Streams of Oregon	(1 subcategory	and 104 pages)
to make	category:Rivers and streams of Oregon	(6 subcategories	and 260 pages)

It would be nice to break the new category into subcategories with fewer pages. I have two ideas:

1. By navigability:
   • Navigable rivers and streams of Oregon: Any R/S that has (or ever had) commercial navigation on a part of its length
   • Non-navigable rivers and streams of Oregon: Any R/S that has never had commercial navigation on any part of its length
2. Geographically:
   • Rivers and Streams of Eastern Oregon: Any R/S entirely east of the Cascades
   • Rivers and Streams of Western Oregon: Any R/S entirely west of the Cascades
   • Don't subcategorize Columbia River or Silver Creek and other {{SIA}} (whether east, west, or both)

I don't have a strong opinion, but I suspect that the folks who are into categories aren't going to like the navigable/non cats. Something like Rickreall Creek used to have steamboats near its mouth a long time ago but it seems misleading to call it navigable. Some niggling tedium questions

So, it appears we are a little behind the ever-evanescent marketing folks who keep re-branding everything.

Apparently the Portland Center for the Performing Arts is now "Portland'5 Centers for the Arts" (since 2013), which is acknowledged in the lead, but not the article title. Are we waiting for a regime change to bring the marketers back to their senses or are we just ignoring the change? The same marketers are now referring to "Brunish Theatre" rather than Brunish Hall.

Tough call. One could argue "Portland'5 Centers for the Arts" is the proper title of the organization (blech! *rolls eyes*), or argue that "Portland Center for the Performing Arts" is the common name. My personal preference is to keep the latter, but I wouldn't be bothered if the page were moved. As for Theatre vs. Hall, we should go with the official name (but not its former name) since this is not a stylization. There's an interview with Jane Jarrett, the former PR and development director of PCPA, who says, "The Center is now called "Portland’5 Centers for the Arts" – a rebranding intended to help the public understand that the Center includes five theaters. I’m not sure how one would go about abbreviating that, and I’ve yet to figure out how to pronounce it. I seem to always fall back into "PCPA"." I just created a redir from Portland's Centers for the Arts but if they're bound and determined to be the "5" thing and are no longer PCPA, we should move the PCPA page there and say in the lede "(stylized as Portland'5 Centers for the Arts)". On the Metro (Oregon regional government) page, the new brand was added by an employee of Metro with this edit, and YBG did a spelling/grammar correction about a month later, because "Portland'5" looks indeed like a typo. I am not sure if the work is in the public domain, so I think it is best to upload here and not Commons. Thank you for offering to upload an image. As far as the article goes, I have yet to figure out whether one or more copies of the sculpture have moved around, or how many copies there may be. Are works by the Oregon state government in the public domain? I was planning to upload an image of Treasurer Ted Wheeler (on the Treasury's website) however was unsure of the copyright status. You can't upload an Oregon government image unless it would meet the non-free content criteria, which is very unlikely. (Criterion one rules out uploading most images.) Except, any Fish and Wildlife photo you find at [1] above or on their Flickr account (linked from that webpage) is in the public domain, so you can upload those images to Commons.
