Template talk:Architecture in Portland, Oregon

Project members are invited to discuss the future of Template:Architecture in Portland, Oregon. I have removed hotels from the template and created Template:Hotels in Portland, Oregon. Similarly, I removed theaters from the template and created Template:Theatres in Portland, Oregon. I think we should eliminate the Architecture template altogether, which is subjective (what are the criteria for inclusion?) and not particularly helpful. There are not similar Architecture templates for other cities, but there are similar Hotel, Theatre, etc. templates for many cities. Thoughts? ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:23, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

  • I don't have a real strong feeling, but it seems to me that Architecture is a more encyclopedic topic that Theaters, Hotels, and Sports Venues, all of which seem more tourist guidebook fare. Keep building the topic- and neighborhood- specific templates and perhaps lists and categories, and then maybe think about eliminating this template. YBG (talk) 21:38, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
    • But, at least these more specific templates can incorporate all notable subjects of a particular building type. The buildings included in the Architecture template seem completely arbitrary. Any NRHP site could be considered a "historic building", and there are many other museums and entertainment venues than the ones listed currently. The same could have been said for the Hotels and Theatres… some were included but others were not. Are there any templates project members feel should be created? Government buildings (or, maybe just a Government of Portland, Oregon template with a buildings section?), or architecture firms? Seems to me the transportation entries could be moved to templates specific to airports, TriMet or MAX, etc. I do like grouping the tallest buildings together, especially since there is a corresponding Wikipedia list for Portland's tallest buildings. I am still working on the neighborhoods project, slowly but surely! ----Another Believer (Talk) 21:51, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
It seems to me the Architecture template should be placed within articles generally about Portland as a whole or its architecture: Portland, Oregon; Architecture of Portland, Oregon; Tourism in Portland, Oregon; and possibly Visitors Information Center (Portland, Oregon). I looked in category:buildings and structures in Portland, Oregon for other candidates, but there are few overview or central articles for each subcategory.
I think the architecture template should include all the individual architecture templates. Each sub-template should only be in the articles enumerated. Probably there are many more templates needed which would be appropriate like for category:residential buildings in Portland, Oregon‎. —EncMstr (talk) 04:03, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

Phoenix, Oregon

... on the article forPhoenix, Oregon I wrote that it was just Rick Bolz who was from Phoenix in Neighbrhood Children, because no other member during their fame was from Phoenix. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dakman111 (talkcontribs) 00:46, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

Are named collections of features suitable articles?

Thomas Creek (Oregon)‎‎ is like many articles I have created. It helps identify a feature, alerts one to its ambiguity (or lack thereof), and locates it.

A well-meaning editor identified it as a disambiguation page and made some of the edits necessary to convert it, including removing it from category:Streams of Oregon and WP:WikiProject Rivers.

Would someone please take a look at its recent edits and comment? Thanks! —EncMstr (talk) 00:11, 21 November 2014 (UTC)

The purpose of this page is disambiguation though, yes? I have not scrutinized each of the edits made to the page recently, but I would not expect to see a disambiguation page in a category like "Streams of Oregon". I would expect to find Wikipedia articles for streams. Headed out the door now, but I will try to revisit this later to look at specific edits you are referring to above. ----Another Believer (Talk) 01:04, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
I haven't looked up the relevant guidelines, but since there are actually zero articles about any creeks named Thomas (I note with dismay that this article started as a Doncram special--i.e. kind of a useless coatrack to hang Z.C.B.J. Tolstoj Lodge No. 224 onto [not sure why it matters that the building overlooks Thomas Creek (Linn County, Oregon)])...I think this should still be in the streams cat. I'm also not sure that it's a problem to be in the Rivers project, but the the Rivers project folks can make that call. I think the best course of action is to write up a stub on what appears to be the most notable Thomas Creek--the Linn County one with two covered bridges and a ZCBJ lodge, yank the bridges from the table, and put the article back in the streams cat. Barring actual policy and guidelines on this, of course. The disambig folks would probably have a fit over this though. Maybe make the page be for the Linn County one and stash the links for the others on the talk page. Valfontis (talk) 02:49, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
I created a Thomas Creek (Linn County, Oregon) one over the last few days. Covered bridges galore. Finetooth (talk) 19:07, 2 December 2014 (UTC)
Nice article there. I've never heard of those bridges, but they look stunning. Jsayre64 (talk) 06:23, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
As a practical matter, when I'm looking for streams to write about, I sometimes look for redlinked streams in existing articles such as List of rivers of Oregon. I would be inclined to duck the policy arguments about lists and dabs by moving the Thomas Creek (Oregon) data into the "List of rivers of Oregon" and then deleting the separate Thomas Creek list. If agreement to that could be reached here, I would volunteer to move the various Thomas Creeks into correct position in the longer list. I would also volunteer to create a short article about the Linn County Thomas Creek, as Valfontis has suggested. Someone else would have to delete the Thomas Creek list when the time comes. That's above my pay grade. Finetooth (talk) 18:18, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
It seems to me that maybe these articles are NOTDAB but rather set index articles. Interestingly, the example given at the latter link is List of peaks named Signal Mountain. Perhaps marking them as such would alleviate some of the problems? Thoughts? YBG (talk) 00:21, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Mayors update

If anyone needs a little project, the mayors of Category:Cities in Oregon probably need updating after the past election. Here's a previous discussion on how to go about it (we don't need nowiki tags anymore though). And how about the legislature, Mr. @Esprqii:? Valfontis (talk) 21:08, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

I was just thinking about this. We need an 78th Oregon Legislative Assembly article as well as updates to the House races for Oregon legislative elections, 2014 and the ballot measures for Oregon state elections, 2014. That would be a good start. I might try and start 'em this weekend. --Esprqii (talk) 21:34, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
So I got started on the mayors thing. If anyone wants to help before I get bored and quit, let me know and I'll explain where I left off. In other news, I don't know how long our rockin' SOS has been doing this, but the Oregon Blue Book entries for the cities link to their Wikipedia articles. Nice vote of confidence there, though several of the articles I've run across are kind of horrible. Valfontis (talk) 01:07, 11 January 2015 (UTC)
Great to know! Do you guys know that erstwhile Oregonian User:Dominic got the U.S. National Archives to link to Wikisource versions of their texts? Would be great to learn of other instances of this sort of official recognition of Wikipedia as a valuable resource. -Pete (talk) 01:08, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
An example of this is the Oregon Treaty -- it hasn't yet been linked from archives.gov, but that's just because the queue is backlogged. Here are links to:

I'll check that out Pete. As I was working on the mayors--which project I finished, you're welcome :-)--that the Oregon Blue Book has also linked to what articles Oregon Encyclopedia has on various cities (they have no internal consistency with the article titles), but we have 100% coverage of all 242 and they...don't! </gloat> I've added the Blue Book and OE links to all the city articles so we have 100% mutual linking with the S.O.S. Harej (talk) 16:56, 14 January 2015 (UTC)

I'd like to second User:Harej's appeal for feedback from WikiProject members. I think we can all agree that Wikipedia would benefit if WikiProjects of all sorts were more active and constructive. We are fortunate that WikiProject Oregon is not stagnant like many others, so any insight about how we operate might help with this research project. ---Another Believer (Talk) 00:36, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

Bunch of election redir tags

I noticed a bunch of new project tags today on a series of redirs (example: Talk:United States House of Representatives elections in Oregon, 1914), and asked about it on Koavf's talk page. Valfontis (talk) 02:46, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

Too funny

This is only tangentially related to WP:ORE, but I wanted to share it with someone. I noticed an Oregon high school with an article at ja.wikipedia, so I wondered how many Oregon schools were represented there. So I used chrome's translate facility to navigate to the category page Oregon Education. Chrome nicely translated the page for me, including the 'alphabetical' subheadings -- ka-ki-ku-ke-ko and the like. Well, many of those subheadings can be translated, so Westview High is categorized under "Cormorant" (う) and Beaverton under "Facial" (ひ) and the entirety of district 48 under "Following the fire" (ひ の続き, not sure what the kanji is doing in the 'alphabetical' header). Somewhere in America is a high school whose mascot is the Cormorant and whose Japanese name begins with "う". That would truly be funny! Hopefully, someone in WP:ORE finds this interesting. Horse meat packing in Portland

I was just reading this pricenomics article on eating horse meat and stumbled across this: "On July 19, 1895, the first-ever industrial horse meat packing plant opened in Portland, Oregon. Armed with $10,000 worth of machinery for “slaughtering, packaging, and shipping meat,” the plant set about shipping thousands of tonnes of meat every week. “The selling and eating of horse meat is very repulsive to the average American,” admitted its owner, “but it is not so clear that it is forbidden by the law.”"

There were links to the following 1895 NYT article snippets: a and b, and more links: [1] [2] [3]. Not sure where it should go, but I thought it was worth tossing on WP:ORE. tedder (talk) 19:25, 18 January 2015 (UTC)

One Jay F. Rosenberg, a Reed College alum, in his fine pamphlet, The Impoverished Students' Book of Cookery, Drinkery, & Housekeepery has an brief essay on horsemeat. Maybe there's some sort of connection. Valfontis (talk) 15:06, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

Foul weather in Portland?

Hey climate fans, here's your chance to do something about the weather. There is a discussion at Talk:Portland, Oregon#Climate about what the heck to call Portland's climate. Valfontis (talk) 22:14, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

Waterfront Blues Festival

I have WP:PROD an article that may be of interest to this group (Waterfront Blues Festival) as not being WP:NOTE. XFEM Skier (talk) 22:02, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

@XFEM Skier: The article really does need better sources, but 436 book hits? Did you really do the research in the boilerplate {{prod-nn}}? I don't think this is non-notable. I plan to contest this as soon as I have time to expand it, if someone doesn't beat me to it....and somebody already did. Valfontis (talk) 22:16, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
I removed the tag and posted a few links on the talk page. All I had to do was google the name of the festival... I agree work is needed on the article, but it would be nice to do a little research before nominating an article for deletion. ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:19, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Internet Archive

Jill Lepore of The New Yorker has written a most interesting article, published this month as "The Cobweb", here about the Internet Archive and its history. Many of you already know about the Wayback Machine and how you personally can prevent link rot in your favorite articles. For those who might not already know, just go to this page, enter the URL of the page you want to save, and click Save Page. That's all there is to it. Finetooth (talk) 18:04, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

A map showing history of tallest buildings?

Over at List of tallest buildings in Portland, Oregon I suggested that it would be really nice to illustrate the timeline with a map. Anybody else think this would be a good idea? YBG (talk) 08:56, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

Hot Lake Hotel

It's possibly haunted, it's definitely on the NRHP, and it's very interesting. An expert on the topic, @Richard R. Roth:, just added a great deal of information to the article but it's not formatted for Wikipedia. My first impulse is to revert it all and ask the author to start over. Does anyone with more patience than me want to take a look at this rather than blow it up? Valfontis (talk) 15:37, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

Category:Mayors of places in Oregon

This category caught my eye. In Oregon (unlike many states), I believe it is not possible to be a mayor of any place other than a city; Oregon doesn't have towns, etc. (There are now hamlets in Clackamas County, but they don't have mayors.) So. I suggest this category be moved either to one of the following:

Thoughts? -Pete (talk) 02:11, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

I hear ya, but unfortunately this is part of a larger category naming scheme. For my part a) I don't like upsetting the Category folks and b) in the past WP:ORE has gotten a bit of grief on the Wiki for doing our "things look different here" thing (i.e. not sticking to the pattern). But it wouldn't hurt to ask at WP:CFD. Valfontis (talk) 03:01, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
Similarly, I get what you mean, but I tend to prefer consistency when possible. ---Another Believer (Talk) 05:01, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

Librarians are popular

Did you know? That there's a tool that tracks page views for articles related to the project? Check it out here. The results may surprise you. And it makes me glad I stumbled across the filming of The Librarians and was able to add a crappy image. Question: Since the public seems hungry for info on the show, should I upload the rest of my even crappier pictures? Valfontis (talk) 20:33, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

I was familiar with the popular pages feature (I have several on my watchlist for various WikiProjects), but not the TV show. A couple pictures might be helpful, especially if they show something unique, but I imagine only one will be included in the Wikipedia article itself. ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:36, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

This passed AfC as Portland Historical Buildings and Landmarks, which is troublesome. I don't think anybody from this project has really looked at it. I don't want to crush anyone's dreams but I think this needs to be deleted. What should we do with it? Is is salvageable? Valfontis (talk) 04:54, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

Delete. Too subjective and general. One could not possibly list all of the notable buildings in Portland. ---Another Believer (Talk) 05:04, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
  • Agree. I think the National Register of Historic Places provide a good/comprehensive list of well documented historic places...including ~500 historic buildings in Portland. Buildings listed in this article either duplicate sites on existing NRHP lists; or if they're not on a NRHP list, their historic notability should be seriously questioned. At least that's my thoughts on the subject.--Orygun (talk) 05:37, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
  • There are times when |non-NRHP lists can be created for historical sites, regardless of their NRHP status or lack thereof (Oregon's Most Endangered Places comes to mind), but they still included sites that meet certain criteria and are not selected subjectively. ---Another Believer (Talk) 05:54, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

I wonder if there's a place for this on WikiTravel or whatever we're calling it these days... Does anyone work over there? Valfontis (talk) 05:42, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

Wikivoyage, if you are referring to the WMF-affiliated travel wiki. I don't think this list meets its needs either. ---Another Believer (Talk) 05:51, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
Okie doke. Now where do I register a complaint about AfC? I see articles about perfectly notable dusty old buildings in Oregon being rejected in favor of this. I guess it's hit or miss just like everything else around here? Valfontis (talk) 06:11, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

Restaurants

I recently added a bunch of restaurant links to Wikipedia:WikiProject Oregon/to do, but figured I would share them here, too: Andina (restaurant), Apizza Scholls, Ava Gene's, Beast (restaurant), Biwa (restaurant), Bollywood Theater, Byways Cafe, Caffe Mingo, Castagna (restaurant), Clyde Common, Dime Store (Portland, Oregon), Dixie Tavern, Expatriate (restaurant), Firehouse (restaurant), Genoa (restaurant), Grüner (restaurant), Henry's Tavern, Higgins Restaurant and Bar, Hobo's (bar), Irving Street Kitchen, Ken's Artisan Pizza, Laurelhurst Market, Le Pigeon, Lincoln (restaurant), Little Bird Bistro, Mother's Bistro and Bar, Ned Ludd (restaurant), Nostrana (restaurant), Nuestra Cocina, Olympic Provisions, Oven and Shaker, Ox (restaurant), Paley's Place, Pine State Biscuits, Por Que No, Portobello Vegan Trattoria, Produce Row Cafe, Raven & Rose, Republic Cafe and Ming Lounge, Screen Door (restaurant), Tasty n Sons, Teardrop Lounge, The Blue Goose, The Parish, The Woodsman Tavern, Toro Bravo, Veritable Quandary. I believe all have received reviews and/or been included in "best of" lists, etc., so notability should not be a problem. Feel free to create articles, suggest other notable restaurants, or add more red links to Wikipedia:WikiProject Oregon/to do for future development. ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:18, 18 December 2014 (UTC)

Having received reviews is not nearly enough to establish notability for an individual restaurant, in my opinion, unless you can cite multiple reviews from national publications (as opposed to regional newspapers such as The O); nearly all restaurants receive reviews. Even one or two New York Times-level reviews would not be sufficient, but several such would be. I also don't believe inclusion in a "best of" list is enough, unless it's from a national publication (or maybe multiple regional publications). Frankly, I'm disappointed to see this from an editor I respect. I still don't think Otto's Sausage Kitchen, the article on which came from the same experienced editor, is notable, and I said so on this page when it was created. SJ Morg (talk) 20:21, 18 December 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for your kind words and for voicing your concerns. Regarding Otto's, I agree that more work on the article is needed, but I disagree about the restaurant being non-notable. See the talk page for additional sources, which I have yet to incorporate into the article. The problem is, I started constructing the article with the wrong sources, which is why the References section currently looks ridiculous and completely biased.
I am curious, though, what do you think about articles like   Country Bill's,   Gypsy Restaurant and Velvet Lounge or   Rimsky-Korsakoffee House, all of which were/are local and mostly covered in local sources? In my opinion they meet notability criteria and make great Wikipedia articles. I so respect you as an editor and value your opinion. Perhaps my notability standard is too low, which is why I am thankful to have this space as a sounding board. But, I still think I could make decent Wikipedia articles for many of the aforementioned restaurants. My problem is always time, hence why I invited others to participate in the process and/or conversation. ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:40, 18 December 2014 (UTC)
Also, I should say that I won't be offended if some or all of the links I added to Wikipedia:WikiProject Oregon/to do are removed. I was just trying to add more To Dos, as if we don't have enough. --Another Believer (Talk) 20:43, 18 December 2014 (UTC)
I'm not really interested in creating restaurant articles but if that's your or someone else's thing, go for it. Personally, I do think the to/do list should include mostly topics of more general Oregon interest, especially to a newer or casual project member. (The restaurants are very Portland-centric.) Someone who is looking to do something for the project might do better picking something off a list that for sure has notability, like the stuff with a gazillion incoming links at Wikipedia:WikiProject Oregon/Redlinks list, which is already linked in "to-do", and not have to deal with the demoralizing process of having the article they started get marked for deletion. Old dead guys might not be everyone's thing either, but I think to-do should really be "topics of (historical) importance to Oregon that really should be created" aka "what has The Oregon Encyclopedia scooped us on that we should have also?" That's just my opinion, but traditionally that's how the to-do list was used. On the other hand, since it really isn't being used anymore, why not put something in it? The current list does seem to need some curating, however. Some pruning and maybe split out the restaurants so stuff like Portland Rescue Mission and Salmon Street Springs don't get lost in the shuffle. YMMV. Valfontis (talk) 22:36, 18 December 2014 (UTC)
Sure, that makes sense (I added Elizabeth Leach Gallery, Portland Rescue Mission, and Salmon Street Springs, too, by the way). I was using it as a bit of a reminders checklist, but I suppose I can use my own sandbox for that. I'll remove the restaurants from the to do list. I was just hoping they would fall on more eyes, being on the main page. ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:39, 18 December 2014 (UTC)

It seems like an article like Restaurants in Portland, Oregon would fall in the middle of the notability spectrum and probably satisfy both sides. By not naming it List of restaurants in Portland, Oregon, it would best cover the entire restaurant scene and naming the establishments with local notability (cited of course), though most entries would not be linked because the nature of restaurants is rather like—I don't know—bathrooms and restrooms in a house: They are not usually anything to take note of, unless missing.

There is a wide range of comparable articles, but none come close to what I would hope to see. The closest is probably List of restaurants in New York City, especially the pizzaria section. There are also:

Our Portland article should definitely mention farmers markets, food carts, and the little-known fact I read in an in-flight magazine in the 1990s: Portland has more restaurants per capita than any other city in the U.S. (or was it world?).[1] Of course we should cover the most written about restaurants, especially if there isn't enough material for an article on that restaurant. It could also mention the number of Burger Kings, McDonalds, etc. restaurants. The Barcelona article gives the Michelin star rating. The year a restaurant opened might be a good, verifiable surrogate for the impact a restaurant has. I can think of lots of things I would like to see when choosing a restaurant: cuisine, awards, number of vegan/vegetarian options, seating capacity, price range, difficulty of getting a table, but those have numerous editorial problems. —EncMstr (talk) 02:04, 19 December 2014 (UTC)

  1. ^ Several times over the years I have searched for this, but haven't been able to find it again.
I like the idea of the general article suggested by EncMstr. I've done almost zero research on the subject, but a 2012 article in The Oregonian appears under the headline: "Portland No. 10 among U.S. cities with highest concentration of restaurants". The claim is supported by reference to a Trulia.com analysis, with caveats, of census data. Finetooth (talk) 05:52, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
I like Taco Bell. Can we add Taco Bell (Hillsboro-Imbrie Drive) to the list? Aboutmovies (talk) 05:55, 19 December 2014 (UTC)

How about I tweet about it and it goes viral over $4? Aboutmovies (talk) 06:39, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
I like EncMstr's suggestion as well. When I read the list of suggested articles above, my first thought was, "but routine restaurant reviews are explicitly excluded from proving notability", so probably most of them are not notable. After spending too much time perusing the archived talk pages and page history of WP:NCORP, it seems that the "routine reviews don't establish notability" rule was there for many years, and even passed a talk page discussion, before being removed earlier this year by a single editor without discussion. I've reverted that removal, so it's there now, but we'll see what happens. In any event, I would suggest that most of the above restaurants are at best marginally notable, delicious though they are, so a list or a broader article would seem better to me. Tdslk (talk) 08:18, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
I like adding food carts. Certainly unique- gourmet food trucks are in many places, but the cart thing is fairly specific and has been written about. Related, the Pok Pok food cart in the airport has gotten a lot of press. tedder (talk) 03:03, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Don't bite me, but I created an article for Por Que No... *hides* I mention this because I am hoping someone might be able to add coordinates for the Mississippi (original) location and/or possess a picture of the Hawthorne restaurant's exterior. And, in all seriousness, I would say this restaurant meets notability criteria, but what do others think? ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:10, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

I uploaded File:Por Que No, Hawthorne (2015) - 1.jpg and added to the article. ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:41, 8 February 2015 (UTC)

Historic Oregon Newspapers

I just saw a note from the Keizer historical society that the UO's Historic Oregon Newspaper archives has added Smoke Signals, the paper of the Confederated Tribes of the Grande Ronde, and the Chemawa American from Chemawa Indian School. The latter goes back to 1914. The whole archive is an amazing free resource and now has over 100 historic newspapers from all over the state scanned and OCRed. Fun reading (if you're nerdy), even if you're not doing research. Valfontis (talk) 05:48, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

Kitzhaber biographical blurb at Oregon Portal

By chance, I just discovered that the "Selected biography" entry on John Kitzhaber at the Oregon Portal was very badly out of date, referring to him as as a "former governor" and not even mentioning that he became governor again in 2011 and continues to serve in the office. I made some quick edits to correct the biggest errors, but I don't have much interest in editing articles about politicians, so the blurb still needs attention. However, in light of current events (February 2015), generating a lot of controversy around Kitzhaber and Cylvia Hayes, it's probably best to remove this entry entirely from the "Selected biography" list, temporarily – but that's not very simple to do for Portal items that are randomly selected from a list. Thoughts? SJ Morg (talk) 08:37, 8 February 2015 (UTC)

(10 days later) OK, this really needs an update now, as he has left office. I won't have time today to do it myself. SJ Morg (talk) 21:34, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
I kinda fixed it when I was finding all the other references to his being current governor, but it could use more work. Valfontis (talk) 23:50, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

governor follies

Looks like a bunch of articles--John Kitzhaber, Kate Brown, Governor of Oregon--are about to get a lot of scrutiny and silliness. Let's keep an eye out, WP:ORE folks! --Esprqii (talk) 20:02, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

In case you think I was sitting in the room with Kitz since my note above dropped at the exact same time as his announcement--no, I just figured it was coming soon. Can anyone slap some protection tags on these articles? I'll check back after the dust settles a bit. --Esprqii (talk) 20:57, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.ChaseKR (talk) 21:00, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
From what I've seen, I don't think protection is warranted yet, but ping me if that changes. I've got a pic of the media feeding frenzy in front of the Capitol yesterday that I'll upload if I can get my camera to cooperate. Valfontis (talk) 21:11, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
By the way folks, watchlisting the "related changes" for the links on the page for the Kitzhaber article might not be a bad idea. Valfontis (talk) 22:23, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
Didn't know about the related changes links...cool stuff. --Esprqii (talk) 23:09, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

I'll be around to assist in finally letting all the helpful people out there in WikiLand let us know that Kate Brown is Governor and to improve the rest of today's helpful edits (that's not snark--the vast majority of the drive-by edits relating to the situation have tried to help). Who's in? I'm brewing a pot of coffee. Valfontis (talk) 14:40, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

Tumala Mountain

Can we get a third opinion on this article? I don't want to get into 3RR. Thanks! Valfontis (talk) 03:29, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

Ridge, Oregon

The former Umatilla County town of Ridge, Oregon, is not represented here. I wonder if enough information exists to start an article. McArthur says, "Located about 12 miles southeast of Pilot Rock. The name of the post office was taken from the location of the post office, located on the watershed between Birch Creek and Butter Creek drainages. A sawmill was also located there. The post office operated from 1882 and 1906." RoadsideThoughts has a Ridge page. And many members of the Oregon Ogles died in Ridge, although this fact may not be useful.

Of some interest is the change in political climate in Umatilla County, where John Gurdane was elected to the Oregon House in 1894. Gurdane was a Republican from Ridge, and the county was staunchly Democratic at that time. The town of Gurdane, Oregon, is not here either. McArthur says of Gurdane, "Located about 16 miles south of Vinson, Gurdane is named for John S. Gurdane, a pioneer settler of Umatilla County. A post office was established there in 1890. Gurdane was a member of the Oregon State Legislature." Any thoughts? Geirfuglasker (talk) 01:57, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi Geirfuglasker, good question. At first glance, I think either of these would be a bit of a stretch for their own articles; I think you would need an additional high quality source or two to establish notability. You could perhaps start an article on John Gurdane, though, since he was a legislator -- and maybe some of the info about the town named after him would make sense there?
The shifts in political affiliation in Oregon around that time are of interest to me, too. From William S. U'ren and John H. Mitchell (the scoundrel! See also 19th Oregon Legislative Assembly) through George W. Joseph and independent Julius Meier, things seemed pretty turbulent in Oregon's political parties from about the civil war through the 1930s. I don't know if any of this relates to what you're talking about ...? -Pete (talk) 02:32, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
If you ask me, if they're in OGN, then Ridge, Oregon and Gurdane, Oregon seem much more sufficiently notable than, say, Modeville, Oregon. The only Oregon "town" article that has been deleted was Blue Bucket Cow Camp, Oregon and I had a hand in that, despite being WP:ORE's resident expert on Podunks. I hope that helps. Valfontis (talk) 02:48, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
Here is a book on the early political parties in Oregon from 1843-1868 that might be interesting. Update on the towns of Ridge and Gurdane: For unclear reasons, McArthur's notes for his 1928 edition included these towns, but they were purged along with other towns in the 1944 edition. I will keep these towns in mind for articles if something else turns up. Geirfuglasker (talk) 09:03, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

Is this the correct location? I'm curious what's there now. tedder (talk) 23:36, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

Good question, it looked right to me when I did the initial research, but so little info is available. I would like to visit the local historical society and talk to someone who might remember the towns and their locations. Geirfuglasker (talk) 05:48, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

Past bus links

Dfrr has been adding sections titled "Past Bus Routes" to many TriMet articles. I take the position that such collections fall under WP:NOTDIRECTORY and thus should be removed. However, I'd like some outside input to avoid a content dispute. Conifer (talk) 19:48, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

I take the same position. That certainly fails #4 of the policy. And, just my opinion here, such rail stations aren't notable and shouldn't have articles. Jsayre64 (talk) 04:31, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Hey, if anyone is passing through PDX for the holiday season and could snap a shot of the carpet (sans shoes, as is popular) for a Commons image, that would be great! Art+Feminism, Saturday, March 7 at the Portland Art Museum's Crumpacker Family Library

Local Art+Feminism organizers are hosting an editathon at the Portland Art Museum's Crumpacker Family Library (in the Mark Building) on Saturday, March 7. Click here for more information. "ArtAndFeminism" is a global campaign to improve coverage of women and the arts on Wikipedia, though really event participants are welcome to work on whatever tickles their fancy. OK, OK, I'll admit to a little hyperbole ;) Just trying to keep the COTM active. (For newer members, our collaborations have been pretty active in the past.)
  • One of the better examples is the Eugene Register-Guard article, now a Good Article, which was mostly built up during a collaboration here;
  • Our regular collaborations were a primary subject for a peer reviewed study that concluded that COTM-type programs were a good way to build community and help new users stay engaged. (I can find the link if anybody's interested.)
Anyway -- thanks for commenting there YBG, and assuming there's no dissent, I'll move ahead with merging and tidying up that content. -Pete (talk) 21:27, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

Photos for Oregon articles

Lately I've been working on Wikisource and Wikimedia Commons more than Wikipedia. It's worth knowing something about those projects, as they can offer a great deal to Wikipedia.

I just blogged about how to find and extract high quality scans of photos from old (public domain) books, for use in Wikipedia articles or elsewhere. I used the works of Joseph Gaston as an example; if you look at his Wikisource Author page, you'll find links to his works, highlighting lots of photos. The ones that are already uploaded in high resolution are in wikisource:en:Category:Centennial History of Oregon. To the right are some of the "before and afters" where I have been able to add improved photos. (You'll need to click into the bigger versions to see the difference.) I've also added new photos where we didn't have them before -- for instance, William Reid (an architect of Oregon railroads), photos of earlier Oregon State Capitol locations (see talk page), John H. Couch.

I hope this blog/video demonstration is useful, and it would be great if others could explore and find useful images in these books. Valfontis and Liannadavis, take note -- this is the answer I wasn't quite ready to give in a recent discussion about Mr. Newby. -Pete (talk) 17:06, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

The Dream (sculpture)

Something I worked on this past weekend when I was feeling under the weather. It is missing a photo, if anyone happens to be near the Convention Center soon. Feel free to copy edit / improve. I've nominated it for a copy edit from the Guild of Copy Editors and intend to nominate it for Good status afterwards. ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:00, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

Would you outline the right procedure for uploading a photo of contemporary art? For example, should the photograph bypass Commons and be uploaded to Wikipedia? Does it need any templates? What should the resolution be? Geirfuglasker (talk) 21:43, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
Sure, happy to help, especially since I just jumped through these hoops a few days ago. Images of works of art created post-1923 (I think?) are not allowed at Commons. They may be uploaded here at ENWP to be used locally under fair use rules, however. I rarely upload Flickr images taken by others, but see an example of a Flickr upload here. Otherwise, if you took the photo, you can upload using the "Upload file" link on the sidebar, then clicking on "This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use". Under "Non-free use rationale", choose "This is a depiction of a copyrighted three-dimensional work or building" then complete the other fields as appropriate. I recently uploaded images for Alluvial Wall, Echo Gate (image link), Ghost Ship, Stack Stalk and Vera Katz, so any of the images shown in these inboxes should show you the tempates/info to add to the images. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions. There may be other articles at Wikipedia:Oregon Arts Project/Visual Arts/Sculpture that are helpful, or, need images *hint*! ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:03, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
Excellent info. As the weather gets more springy I wanted to help with photos for articles on that page, and this fills in the gory details. Thanks! Geirfuglasker (talk) 23:32, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

Pics added to Talos No. 2, Thor, Awning and River Legend. Image at Multnomah County Archives

This photo:

can be found at

http://vintageportland.wordpress.com/2015/04/27/e-burnside-street-1978/

That photo was provided by the Multnomah County Archives. If the county's archives are in the public domain, the photo above should be added to the commons so that it could be used in United Airlines Flight 173. Anybody willing to do that? Otherwise, could someone add a suitably smaller version of that Multnomah County Archives photo so that it could be used on fair use terms.

Thanks. 72.244.206.76 (talk) 06:27, 28 April 2015 (UTC)

That's a very cool photo, good find! I believe that if it was published without a copyright notice before December 31, 1978 (as it probably would have been, since the source was the Sheriff's office), that it might indeed be in the public domain. I looked through all the Oregonian pages from their first two days of coverage of the crash, but all I see are staff photos -- I don't see that photo listed anywhere. Do you happen to know if it was published in any newspaper?
Interestingly, the Oregonian recap generically cites Wikipedia. Hmm, the snake eats itself.... DanDavidCook, this might make interesting blog fodder, eh? -Pete (talk) 01:17, 29 April 2015 (UTC)

Thanks AB. I meant to mention -- these photos are on Wikisource. For now, the one thing I've made really easy is browsing what's available...actually using it will still take a step or two. They're still a step away from being readily used in a Wikipedia article. They need to be moved to Commons first. The easiest way to do that is probably [tools.wmflabs.org/commonshelper/ CommonsHelper]. My recent post here went into a little more detail; feel free to ask me if you need pointers. -Pete (talk) 02:58, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

Administrator ...

Mable was disambiguation page, but new editor has overwritten it with Wiki-Oregon tagged article . There’s been several edits laid over the original disambiguation page and I’m afraid if I tried to fix it I’d only make it worse. The new article also has quite a few other problems … including potential notability issue. In any case, Administrator might want to take look.--Orygun (talk) 01:05, 15 June 2015 (UTC)

I have resurrected the disambiguation page, added an entry pointing to the new article, Mable (business), and provided the latest text for it with moderate cleanup. It is still missing citations but if those appear it may satisfy notability. —EncMstr (talk) 05:24, 15 June 2015 (UTC)

Image upload?

  Resolved

Does anyone know if this image can be uploaded to Wikipedia under fair use for the article Frank E. Beach Memorial Fountain? I found it using this Creative Commons search feature, but it says "Some rights reserved". Also, the "Upload file" wizard found on the lefthand sidebar at Wikipedia does not seem to be working for me. Anyone else? ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:39, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

I am pretty sure that is a share-alike license suitable for upload to commons. In the last few months, I have uploaded two photos by other people and both were deleted. One was the starlight parade grand marshall, even though the page said it was cc-by-sa. I think the zealots at commons made a mistake on that one. The other was a photo of a shark fence on Flickr which restricted modification so the deleter (deletor? deletionist?) deleted it as "not free". —EncMstr (talk) 04:23, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
For a fair use image, it does not matter what the license is, as we are basically saying we don't care. Aboutmovies (talk) 05:07, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
Fair use images cannot be uploaded to Commons. This includes works of art created past (I believe?) 1923, hence why I was trying to upload just here at English Wikipedia. A while back a bunch of the outdoor sculpture photos I had taken were deleted, instead of being transferred to ENWP, so now I have to photograph them again. I am trying to knock out the ones along the Transit Mall slowly, but surely. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:36, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
Sometimes, an image of sculpture/artwork can't be uploaded to Commons even if the photographer released the image under a free license. That's because the copyright of the artwork depicted sometimes overrides that free license. I'm not sure what determines if that's the case here or whether you can upload it to Wikipedia under fair use. Fair-use images have to meet the criteria at WP:NFCC. I recommend you ask about the image at WP:MCQ. Jsayre64 (talk) 18:30, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
Will do, thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:38, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

Copyright Violation Detection - EranBot Project

A new copy-paste detection bot is now in general use on English Wikipedia. Come check it out at the EranBot reporting page. This bot utilizes the Turnitin software (ithenticate), unlike User:CorenSearchBot that relies on a web search API from Yahoo. It checks individual edits rather than just new articles. Please take 15 seconds to visit the EranBot reporting page and check a few of the flagged concerns. Comments welcome regarding potential improvements. These likely copyright violations can be searched by WikiProject categories. Use "control-f" to jump to your area of interest.--Lucas559 (talk) 22:33, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

Proposed company updates

Hello, I've added proposed factual edits to the talk page of Radisys[1], a tech company based in Hillsboro, Ore and part of the WikiProject Oregon. The updates are factual and include third-party references. I added them to the talk page instead of making the edits myself because have a direct COI and I want to avoid overstepping my reach and violating any rules. Is it possible for an editor to take these edits under consideration and then move forward with making the changes? I'm new to the Wikipedia community and I can provide any additional information if necessary. Thank you. L dozer (talk) 01:17, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

Question: The sculpture Holon is dedicated to someone. If a work of art "honors" an individual, does this justify adding the article to Category:Monuments and memorials in Oregon? Added some images from the parade here if anyone sees any worth adding to existing to articles, etc. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:01, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

Last month I started Stag PDX and just now published Three Sisters Tavern. I've requested a copy edit for the latter and plan to nominate it for good status soon after. Just continuing my work on Portland's seedier sites! (See Mary's Club, Paris Theatre, Silverado, Oregon Theatre, etc.) ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:21, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

Randy Leonard

I found myself working at cross purposes with Jakeran on the Randy Leonard article, including some private email correspondence. I realized part way through that I have a conflict of interest, and I'd rather not continue working on the bio. I hope somebody here can take a look and offer any guidance needed, etc. -Pete (talk) 18:35, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

Suggestion

Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! Also, I'm new at making proposals, so please forgive me if I do anything silly. :) Hope that you like this idea! JonathanHopeThisIsUnique (talk) 04:57, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

Can you link to the proposal please? Thanks! Valfontis (talk) 18:20, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
See Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_United_States#Suggestion_for_US_state_WikiProjects. ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:23, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
Thanks AB! I know I could search for it, but I think if people want someone to look at something, they should link to it! Valfontis (talk) 18:34, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
I agree, but I also assumed he wasn't watching this page and therefore wouldn't see your suggestion. I added the link to make the discussion easier to find for others. ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:36, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
Not to WP:BITE the newbie, but watching this page would also be a good idea for @JonathanHopeThisIsUnique:! Valfontis (talk) 18:43, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
@JonathanHopeThisIsUnique: I would have to see a more specific proposal. I didn't check out the examples of "good" vs. "bad" pages (again, links would be helpful) but I imagine the "bad" pages are because the groups aren't very active. WP:ORE's front page likely needs some updating, but I would probably dig in my heels if it was suggested we had to standardize it some way. We've set the place up to be useful for the active members. If for some reason the page makes it hard for new people to figure out how to contribute, we should certainly address that. WP:ORE is not as active as it once was, but if there is a need to standardize project pages, we should start with the inactive projects. Again, I need to see more specific proposals (maybe make a mock-up of what you are suggesting). I don't speak for the project, just my opinion. Valfontis (talk) 18:43, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

Regional US/Canada Wikimedia conference - Washington DC - 9-11 October

Hello. I would like to invite you to WikiConference USA. This community gathering will be Friday-Sunday 9-11 October (with Columbus Day being Monday the 12th) in Washington DC at the National Archives and Records Administration.

Persons interested in participating may present a submission, request one of about 25 travel scholarships, or plan to attend. Thanks. Blue Rasberry (talk) 16:52, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

Dayton Opera House

Does anyone know whether or not the Dayton Opera House is even still standing? I am having trouble finding much information about the building. ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:33, 6 August 2015 (UTC)

From Google Street view, I see 300, 302, 304, 308, 312 on Ferry St, then a vacant lot where 318 (the purported address of the opera house) should be. Appears to be an ex-building. --Finngall talk 20:19, 6 August 2015 (UTC)
Ah, Google Street view. Good thinking. Thank you for checking. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:36, 6 August 2015 (UTC)
But keep in mind, that I believe my prior research with trying to locate Dayton items showed the addresses in Dayton changed after their big listing binge. I know most of the GPS coordinates were off, but I think in Dayton many addresses were off too (but its been about 6 years since I've looked). Aboutmovies (talk) 05:32, 7 August 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the warning. I will keep the article in past tense unless someone knows the building is still standing. ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:20, 7 August 2015 (UTC)

I too prowled around Dayton once a couple years ago, camera in hand, looking for all the NRHP things. I have some notes and photos (which are on a currently inaccessible hard drive). So don't hold your breath but just wanted to chime in that I attempted to tackle this project once too. Don't stay tuned, go eat some popcorn or something. Sherwood train trestle notable?

Does anyone have a sense of whether or not the train trestle that was destroyed by fire in Sherwood yesterday is notable? On the news last night, the anchor mentioned the bridge had historical significance and was built in the 1880s. Googling "Sherwood train trestle" results in numerous articles about the fire, but I'll have to dig deeper to see if there is more information about this bridge. Know anything about it or have an opinion as to whether or not it meets WP's notability criteria? ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:19, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

Have you tried the SHPO database? It doesn't Google. If it's at all significant I bet it's in there. Valfontis (talk) 14:40, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

An article about a biologist who lived in Oregon (at least towards the end of his life) is nominated for a Good Article in biology & medicine. Category:West Haven-Sylvan, Oregon

As part of my continued effort to categorize Portland articles by geography/neighborhood, I created Category:West Haven-Sylvan, Oregon, which is a CDP and not a Portland neighborhood. I added the parent category "Portland metropolitan area" to West Haven-Sylvan. Would it also be appropriate to make Category:Southwest Portland, Oregon the parent category, or is it inaccurate to consider this area part of Portland? ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:36, 8 September 2015 (UTC)

I would consider it inaccurate. For instance with Providence St. Vincent, Beaverton is literally across the street, and in general Beaverton is closer to many parts of the area than Portland. The CDP is all in Washington County, and Portland is only barely into the county. Aboutmovies (talk) 15:18, 11 September 2015 (UTC)
OK, great, thanks. These sites have addresses that use SW PDX conventions, hence why I was considering the SW PDX category. I removed the "Southwest Portland" category from all articles in Category:West Haven-Sylvan, Oregon. ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:33, 11 September 2015 (UTC)

Hitching Post Square same as Park Blocks in Eugene?

I found a source that said Eugene's Park Blocks were formerly known as Hitching Post Square. I added the former title and source to the Park Blocks article, but is someone more familiar with Eugene able to confirm? ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:57, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

I note that Aboutmovies made some significant contributions that led to a DYK on July 14, 2009.

To me, both the proposed additions and the existing article seem like so much marketing-speak. Nevertheless, I'm appreciate the fact that the proposers recognize their COI and are trying to do things right. I started to try, but my eyes just glazed over. YBG (talk) 04:59, 28 October 2015 (UTC)

First, don't use BitTorrent, it will cost you, a lot.

That said, I was in the MOD Pizza at the new shopping center off Kruse Way in Lake Oswego and was looking at their wall of pictures. I notice what appear to be some familiar pictures. Category:Streams of Oregon

Our beloved Category:Streams of Oregon is up for merge into Category:Rivers of Oregon. The discussion is here: Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2015 October 24#Streams. Discuss. Valfontis (talk) 16:03, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

Thanks. I've added my 2¢. YBG (talk) 00:48, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
It is looking increasingly likely that the discussion will end with a Merge consensus, which, resulting in:
combining category:Rivers of Oregon (6 subcategories and 156 pages)
and category:Streams of Oregon (1 subcategory and 104 pages)
to make category:Rivers and streams of Oregon (6 subcategories and 260 pages)
It would be nice to break the new category into subcategories with fewer pages. I have two ideas:
  1. By navigability:
  2. Geographically:
I have no strong opinion, but prefer a solution that works well worldwide. Thoughts? YBG (talk) 03:39, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

I don't have a strong opinion, but I suspect that the folks who are into categories aren't going to like the navigable/non cats. Something like Rickreall Creek used to have steamboats near its mouth a long time ago but it seems misleading to call it navigable. The floods of the 1860s through 1890s messed a lot of the navigability up! West and east might work though. Valfontis (talk) 00:43, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

Yea, that could pose a problem. So I guess geographical subdivision might be best, unless there is another way of I haven't thought of. YBG (talk) 03:53, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

Some niggling tedium questions

So, it appears we are a little behind the ever-evanescent marketing folks who keep re-branding everything.

Apparently the Portland Center for the Performing Arts is now "Portland'5 Centers for the Arts" (since 2013), which is acknowledged in the lead, but not the article title. Are we waiting for a regime change to bring the marketers back to their senses or are we just ignoring the change? The same marketers are now referring to "Brunish Theatre" rather than Brunish Hall.

I have no opinion, just wanted to raise the questions for wiser beings, who understand Emerson's foolish consistency adage. Cheers! — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 22:57, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

Tough call. One could argue "Portland'5 Centers for the Arts" is the proper title of the organization (blech! *rolls eyes*), or argue that "Portland Center for the Performing Arts" is the common name. My personal preference is to keep the latter, but I wouldn't be bothered if the page were moved. As for Theatre vs. Hall, we should go with the official name (but not its former name) since this is not a stylization. I'm just glad Wikipedia is no longer referring to Antoinette Hatfield Hall as "Portland Center for the Performing Arts", though I certainly understand where the confusion came from. ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:23, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
Ditto on the "blech". MOS:TM is the guideline. Seems like "'5" would not be considered standard English. Valfontis (talk) 00:49, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
The only place I've heard of the "5" is here on Wikipedia, so I'm going to vote we keep it as it has been until the rest of the world decides to add the "5" or they go back to something else (or make it a 6 if they add another venue). Aboutmovies (talk) 18:18, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
There's an interview with Jane Jarrett, the former PR and development director of PCPA, who says, "The Center is now called "Portland’5 Centers for the Arts" – a rebranding intended to help the public understand that the Center includes five theaters. I’m not sure how one would go about abbreviating that, and I’ve yet to figure out how to pronounce it. I seem to always fall back into "PCPA"." Since it sounds like locals also are not latching on to the new brand, it may just be a case of "too clever by half" and a revision we should leave undone. — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 19:49, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

I just created a redir from Portland's Centers for the Arts but if they're bound and determined to be the "5" thing and are no longer PCPA, we should move the PCPA page there and say in the lede "(stylized as Portland'5 Centers for the Arts)". Kind of like how me move Civic Stadium every time it gets a new sponsor. At least with that place the Timbers play at, I don't cringe visibly each time I look at the name. Valfontis (talk) 00:21, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

On the Metro (Oregon regional government) page, the new brand was added by an employee of Metro with this edit, and YBG did a spelling/grammar correction about a month later, because "Portland'5" looks indeed like a typo. Do we also need a Portland'5 Centers for the Arts redirect to the PCPA article, in case someone searches for the stylized brand? — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 01:43, 5 November 2015 (UTC)
Yes. When in doubt, create a redirect. :) ---Another Believer (Talk) 01:53, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

2nd Oregon Volunteer Infantry Regiment for redlink drive

Please, especially military history fans, look over my draft bare-bones account of the glorious 2nd Oregon Volunteer Infantry Regiment, which I would I like to take live because military history isn't my forte and I'm rather tired of the thing and would like to set it free. Especially make sure the background on the Spanish–American War doesn't sound stupid, but also feel free to make the data dump of troop movements, or anything else, look pretty. This message brought to you by the number 2, the letter O, and the kind-of annual Redlink Round-Up & Rodeo. Yee haw. Valfontis (talk) 11:17, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

Public domain

Are works by the Oregon state government in the public domain? I was planning to upload an image of Treasurer Ted Wheeler (on the Treasury's website) however was unsure of the copyright status. Wikipedia's article on the topic gave no mentions of the state of Oregon whatsoever. MB298 (talk) 22:35, 14 November 2015 (UTC)

No, they're copyrighted, except for some works by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. See [4] and [5]. Jsayre64 (talk) 22:40, 14 November 2015 (UTC)
Do you have any idea if they are licensed under free use? MB298 (talk) 23:01, 14 November 2015 (UTC)
You can't upload an Oregon government image unless it would meet the non-free content criteria, which is very unlikely. (Criterion one rules out uploading most images.) Except, any Fish and Wildlife photo you find at [1] above or on their Flickr account (linked from that webpage) is in the public domain, so you can upload those images to Commons.
