Articles for deletion

A heads-up that anyone may be interested in: There is a conversation focused on merging Category:Athletes from Omaha, Nebraska and Category:Omaha sportspeople to Category:Nebraska sportspeople located here. • Freechild'sup? 02:31, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

The Omaha redirect

I have the question of POV pushing and American Bias shown in the fact that the article "Omaha" redirects to the city. I've also raised this on the main article for the city about it.--Ssteiner209 (talk) 03:47, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Unreferenced living people articles bot

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.

The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Omaha/Archive 5/Unreferenced BLPs<<<

If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.

Thank you.

Update: Wikipedia:WikiProject Omaha/Archive 5/Unreferenced BLPs has been created. This list, which is updated by User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects daily, will allow your wikiproject to quickly identify unreferenced living person articles.
There maybe no or few articles on this new Unreferenced BLPs page. To increase the overall number of articles in your project with another bot, you can sign up for User:Xenobot_Mk_V#Instructions.

Benson, Nebraska and other similarly named articles

For whatever reason, having the article called Benson, Nebraska doesn't sit well with me, mostly because Benson has been an urbanized part of Omaha for a long time. Similar with other areas like Millard, Nebraska and Florence, Nebraska. There's even one for Saratoga, Nebraska Territory. Elkhorn, Nebraska even bothers me and that's relatively new. I would personally do this:

1. North Omaha, Nebraska and other X Omaha's where X is a direction will be X Omaha. North Omaha would seem to be straightforward as to whether it refers to Omaha or not and if there is a North Omaha, Arkansas, for example, people can figure that out easily enough.

2. All other articles like Benson, Nebraska of the form Y, Nebraska will be Y (Omaha, Nebraska), or possibly even Y (Omaha). (We can debate what the optimal form should be.) DandyDan2007 (talk) 04:37, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

Naming neighborhoods in Omaha

First, thanks for starting this as a conversation- I appreciate that. This is an interesting conversation, and one that we should make note of on a subpage of the project.

I wrote almost every neighborhood article in Omaha following the Benson, Nebraska format. After a little while I found the logic to it because of the historical aspect. From that angle, having articles named X=Former City, Y=State makes sense. That's why I named it Saratoga, Nebraska Territory: the article is more about the entity that only existed during territory era, rather than the neighborhood today.

About your proposal, I started the [direction] Omaha articles the way you propose here, and one of the other experienced editors came along and made them all [direction] Omaha, Nebraska titles. Regarding your second proposal, there is a precedence in other cities to use Y = neighborhood, x = city, such as Albany Park, Chicago. There is also a precedence using Y = neighborhood, x = community/area, such as Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. I would suggest that would look like Saratoga (North Omaha). That seems a little clunky to me, but more finite than the current definition.

There was a conversation a few years ago here about the dilemma of Omaha neighborhood definitions, which is that there has been no definitive labeling of Omaha's regions/neighborhoods by cartographers, city officials, or academics as in other cities, such as Chicago. That lends itself to colloquialisms, which I've tried to legitimate through reliable sources. This works well with neighborhood definitions, such as Saratoga, Benson, or Deer Park. Its okay with downtown and Midtown, but becomes shadier with South Omaha and West Omaha, and most difficult with North Omaha- nobody's clamoring to be joined in that title.

So, as per your original question, I'd nominate that we follow: 1. South Omaha, North Omaha, Midtown, Downtown, West Omaha, Northwest Omaha as regional areas of Omaha. These each are treated as (direction) Omaha, Nebraska. 2. Neighborhoods are treated as (insert neighborhood name) Omaha, Nebraska

Thoughts?

Freechild'sup? 04:29, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

You bring up some points I never thought about, such as there really is no definition of what some places are. I know someone who lives in roughly the neighborhood of 60th and Q Street, and I ask him what he calls his neighborhood and he calls it somewhere between South Omaha and Ralston. South Omaha theoretically could go all the way to Ralston. And somewhere in between is the Burlington Road neighborhood. You see signs for it in a certain area, but what does that mean exactly? You can go to other parts of the city, like where does Benson end and Dundee begin? What is the neighborhood west of Benson? There just isn't any hard and fast definition of anything, except that you know that if you are at UNO, you aren't in South Omaha, or North Omaha. But is that Midtown? Where does Midtown end?
Having said all that, I would have to go along with number 1, even though it looks wrong and if I go along with number 1, I'd have to go along with 2. for consistency. In fact, it looks like they already did that for Elkhorn, Omaha, Nebraska already. DandyDan2007 (talk) 06:19, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
One of the things I tried to do throughout the articles is cite the neighborhood boundaries when they were available, like I did in the Burlington Road neighborhood article. I compiled most of these boundaries in [[1]], but haven't added their citations yet. About the boundaries, I tried to figure those out earlier this year in a google map -> http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=118443093709615440330.00048e30cf18f6c3edcab&t=h&z=12 <- but that's by no means definitive, and certainly isn't a reliable source! Oh, and I just found this - great! Creighton has officially succeeded from North Omaha... I have more to say, but am crammed for time. I'll write more later. • Freechild'sup? 15:37, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
Oh, and what do you think about my point regarding the historical neighborhoods, i.e. Saratoga, Nebraska Territory or Squatter's Row or Little Italy (Omaha, Nebraska). By definition, Saratoga was a town that morphed into a neighborhood; Squatter's Row wasn't really a neighborhood at all; and Little Italy's boundaries blurred with Little Bohemia, Forest Park, and all were considered part of Old Gold Coast while it was noted. What will be their naming conventions? • Freechild'sup? 16:01, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

A consideration for cross project consolidation of talk page templates

I have started a conversation here about the possibility of combining some of the United States related WikiProject Banners into {{WikiProject United States}}. If you have any comments, questions or suggestions please take a moment and let me know. --Kumioko (talk) 20:02, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Please let leave a comment on the Portals talk page or let me know if you have any questions or ideas. --Kumioko (talk) 19:20, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Suggestion to add this project to the supported proejcts list of WikiProject United States

With the inclusion of WikiProject Nebraska into the supported projects list of WikiProject United States and the appearance that this project might have low activity I would like to add this project to the supported projects list as well. Before doing this though I would like to hear from the members of the project to get their comments. --Kumioko (talk) 17:49, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

This discussion has been open for 6 days. Does anyone have any comments about this suggestion? --Kumioko (talk) 16:08, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
It seems like you're doing this almost standardly across the state and city projects, and there aren't very many users who contribute regularly to this project, so as the project creator I say go for it. • Freechildtalk 16:57, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
Your right, of course there are quite a few projects that don't want or need to be supported but unfortunately most of the state, city and local projects have little activity these days and I am hoping that we can turn that around by supporting them from a central point so that it takes fewer editors to support the upkeep of the projects and frees up more time to improve articles and collaborate. --Kumioko (talk) 17:08, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
Since the discussion has been open for about 12 days with only one comment so far from the projects creator saying go for it I am going to add this to the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. I will continue to leave comments here as I progress through the process. --Kumioko (talk) 15:38, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
Kumioko, do you know of an article counter for projects? I'm interested in seeing how many are actually tagged with WikiProject Omaha, because I'm afraid I left a small ton off from before I created the project. • Freechildtalk 18:40, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
There are several ways to find out whats tagged already. The easiest is just to look at Category:WikiProject Omaha articles. It looks like there are currently about 340 tagged. As near as I can figure there are about 970 pieces of content in Wikipedia that contain the word Omaha and are not already tagged for the project. Not all are necessarily related to the project though and this includes redirects, categories, templates, files and pages that fall under the Wikipedia namespace including deleted article discussions. I haven't scrubbed it yet but I hope this helps. I put the list here in case you wanted to see what I came up with. Please let me know if you have any questions. I'm sure there are plenty more besides these but this is a start. --Kumioko (talk) 19:09, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Discussion to remove the Automatically assessed logic from the WikiProject United States template

Greetings, there is a discussion regarding removal of the logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories from Template:WikiProject United States. Most of the categories (over 220 Wikipedia wide) were deleted in February 2013 because they were empty. These categories were previously populated by a bot that hasn't run since 2011 and the categories aren't used. Removal of this uneeded/unused logic will greatly reduce the size and complexity of the WikiProject United States template. Any comments or questions are encouraged here. Kumioko (talk) 18:48, 28 August 2013 (UTC)

Lest there is any confusion for people who don't speak the same language, the words "logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories" refer to the feature that was supposed to allow this WikiProject's template to "inherit" class and importance ratings from other WikiProjects. Kumioko says that there are no longer any bots performing the function that formerly copied those ratings. --Orlady (talk) 23:21, 31 August 2013 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.
