Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Olympics/Manual of Style

I think we need to have one for venues. These are just as important as the events, nations, and sports on MOS. Chris (talk) 16:22, 24 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

A lot of Olympic venues are used for other things either before or after their use in an Olympic Games, e.g. Melbourne Cricket Ground, Stadio Olimpico or The O2 Arena (London), so it would be difficult to enforce a consistent style on every article. Paralympic Style Guide edit

Hi. I'm working on a Paralympic style guide at History of the Paralympic Movement in Australia/Wikipedia/Style Guide on Outreach wiki. It isn't intended to be an official manual of style, but rather something that could be used by new contributors who might have simple style related questions. If people could take a look at it, help improve it with new users and non-official policy in mind, that would be fantastic. :) --LauraHale (talk) 23:59, 6 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Result on Nation page - Template edit

I created two template for the header of the wikitable on the NOC/NPC pages Template:Ol archery header and Template:Ol ko header, because I believe that we need a standard header for all the wikitable so why don't create a template for that? I try to answer two question: we really need the BM on the header for the Bronze Medal Match? What style we use on the second line for "Opposition Score"?
For the first question my answer is if there exist sport with the knock-out phase for classification 5th-8th why we have to write on the header Final/BM? It will more correct if we write Final/BM/5thplace/7thplace and so one... So the more obvious solution is to write "Finals" that include everything and on the athlete line underline that it is a BMM or the 5th place Final and so on.
For the second question I found that the layout I used is the best because it is important the round and not the write "Opposition Score" that is the same for all the round so why the bigger line is the second and not the first so I put this layout. Stigni (talk) 13:16, 11 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Raymarcbadz modify it.... Look on my sandbox what I proposal for the layout. Stigni (talk) 13:21, 11 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Stigni, first and foremost. Why did you decide to create templates for each of the headers? Sometimes, the formats always change at every Olympic games. I decided to revert back to the original for one of the nations' pages for multiple reasons.
 • Let the consensus decide first if they will accept your request.
 • Team fencing events have classification rounds, apart from the team-based sports. Only final rounds and bronze medal matches are allowed for the individual knock-out-based sports. Thus, I always place Final/BM. For example, if a tennis player lost from the quarterfinals, this does not imply that he or she will have to qualify for the classification rounds to determine their rankings.
 • It's much better if I adjust a font-size of 95 for the second row header rather using the small tags. It looked awkward to view when placing them on the tables. The other words looked the same with the top headers.
 • We really need the BM on the header for the Bronze Medal Match? Yes. Finals and bronze medal matches are the most common phases at the end of the sporting competition. This will only determine who wins the gold, silver, or bronze.
 • Chinese and Korean surnames must have initials to lessen confusion. There are so many people with the same surnames in China and Korea, so we have put these until further notice.
 • For athletics, why do you want to change "Mark" and "Rank" instead of "Distance" and "Position"? They have the same meaning, so just leave them alone.
 • Please stop using <small> tags for the "Rank", "Result", "Opposition Result", "Opposition Score", vice versa. Raymarcbadz (talk) 13:21, 11 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
It is not Final or BMM but it is Gold Medal Match and BMM or Final for the 1st position and for the 3rd position and together is the FINALS, with classification there is also Boccia at Paralympics; yes it is only two sport (Boccia and Team Fencing) but we have to think to that too, so you want to write Final/BM and then 5th position match, it is not logic. The standard layout has the second line bigger than the first but the more important info is in the first so we have a problem, and I found this solution.
How many Kim there is in Korea? As much as Black in USA or Rossi in Italy so why we write Kim X, Black and Rossi. Or we write Kim, Black and Rossi or Kim X, J Black and M Rossi. I understand if there is two Kim in the same sport in the same year but if is not the name initial is useless.
I change from Distance/Position to Mark/Rank because in high jump Distance don't mean anything so Mark is much better; Rank because in all other sport we use Rank why in Athletics we use Position?Stigni (talk) 14:27, 11 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Well, it's your idea, so let the consensus decide if these will be appropriate for the headers. Right now, just keep them first for the sandbox. But I fairly disagreee with the standard layout having the second line larger than the first. It looked awkward to view. Final does not always mean the first and the third position for knock-out competitions.
There are lot of Kims, Zhangs, Chens around. Other than Kims or something, we still don't need to write initials for other countries apart from Chinese and Korean surnames. In such cases, Venus and Serena Williams, for instance, must have initials in the matches because they both play in the same sport.
Just let the consensus decide. I'll maintain the table formats used at this year's Olympics for the mean time. Raymarcbadz (talk) 14:59, 11 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Indeed if there is two Kim/Zhang/Chen on the same sport on the same Olympics we put the initial otherwise no. Like S. Williams and V. Williams, if in one Olimpics there is only one of the two sister the initial of the name is useless. Stigni (talk) 15:06, 11 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi. I'm not sure I have so much input, they look ok to me. They will probably save much space on wikipedia's servers, but they must be easy to use and understand. One thing that I saw (in the knockout header) was that three parameters were used to determine the number and types of rounds: R64, R32 and R16, which can be set to yes. One parameter is enough: rounds, which can be set to 64, 32 or 16. Same thing with the repechage parameter: Rep and Rep2. Only Rep is needed, and can be set to 1 or 2 (default no repechage). Keep it simple HandsomeFella (talk) 19:38, 11 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I can work on it... And about the layout what do you think? Is my observation correct? Stigni (talk) 21:25, 11 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Update for now three parameters Qual(yes or no), Round(16,32 or 64) and Rep(1,2 or 3); I think tomorrow I will update a now parameters for change the name Qualification to anything (I think to the Seeding Match on Paralympic Boccia). Stigni (talk) 21:54, 11 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
How will the users be able to update if you are going to use templates on headers? I think you might as well do the templates on athletes so that they might not have a hard time understanding it. Like HandsomeFella said, it must be user-friendly and understandable. You may check on my sandbox as well. Thank you. I have created a template on the athletes. Raymarcbadz (talk) 14:59, 11 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
I think about the athlete template and I realize that it is quite useless because it not save space, the user must write more than the usual wikitable. Of course the user if we have a template he know what to write, but I think he already know what to do. So I think if we write a good explanation in MoS and in the documentation we are ok.See this examples:
|align=left|Chad Le Clos|align=left|100 m butterfly||1:54.43||4 Q||1:54.43||bronze03

Why can't we stick on the wikitable formats instead of templates? I don't think it's going to be useful if we transformed them with templates. Most Wiki users are not always IT users, so let's be practical with the normal one. Well, saving space is the advantage for creating templates on tables, but the problem is that the users would make certain mistakes when updating results on a timely process. Even if we are thinking of an athlete or header template, we will always have the same problem. I don't know if this is going to be user-friendly. Can we just use them only for team-based sports? I don't want individual-based sports to share the same features and attributes with basketball and volleyball based on MoS format. Raymarcbadz (talk) 07:07, 12 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

I think I miss something, before you clean up this discussion then you came back and repost a comment you deleted... Stigni (talk) 08:01, 12 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
