In case anybody is interested in helping out, I just wanted to note in addition to the template that he has copied from both print and online sources (see, for example, the comments at Talk:Norsemen) and has split without attribution from other Wikipedia articles. In that case, it can be a simple matter of attribution as per Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia, although many of these instances I've found have been forks that have already been reverted. Notability of Utøya mass murder-victims

Are there any of the victims of the Utøya mass murder (that do not have articles) that are notable? At least one of them has an article on Norwegian wiki.

I would rather say that Vederhus is notable for having been leader of Oslo AuF, none of the other leaders of Elevorganisasjonen is notable anyways. And if Vederhus is notable for leading Oslo AuF - Tore Eikeland should be notable for leading Hordaland AuF. But those two victims are the only notable victims I can think of. FK Lyn

The elite football group of SFK Lyn, called FK Lyn was bankrupted last year. But the Lyn are back - and will be playing in 2012 Norwegian Third Division. What should we do with the articles?

"FK Lyn was a football club" and "Lyn Fotball is a football club playing in Norwegian Third Division"

or

"FK Lyn was bankrupted in 2010, but started to play in 2011 Norwegian Fourth Division" ?

When I read the article about SFK Lyn, it seems clear to that FK Lyn is still bankrupt, and the team playing in next years 3. Division is SFK Lyn or Lyn Fotball.

But anyways - I think the way the FK Lyn article is now, is very misleading. Any thoughts ? Mentoz86 (talk) 14:16, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

• I haven't looked at the articles but this is correct: FK Lyn was not a club, but was the elite football branch of the multi-sports club SFK Lyn. FK Lyn does not exist anymore. Lyn Fotball is not a club either, but co-existed with FK Lyn as the "low-key" football branch of SFK Lyn, but since mid-2010 it is the only football branch of SFK Lyn. Lyn Fotball does field a men's senior team in the Third Division, following promotion from the Fourth Division in 2011. Geschichte (talk) 22:30, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

• Yesterday, the user Jolicnikola moved the page from FK Lyn to Lyn Fotball. See here. However, he performed a copy-paste move, so I'm undoing it and waiting for an administrator to move the page. Atleast that's the way I feel is correct. We could also, as stating above, say that "FK Lyn was a football club" and "Lyn Fotball is a football club playing in Norwegian Third Division" with two different articles, but I feel thi way Jolicknikola did it is more correct. • I'm not sure if FK Lyn should be touched, since the club actually went bankrupt. Note that SFK Lyn now in some respects (on their own website) calls the men's A and B team "Lyn 1896". Organizationally, it's just called Lyn Fotball still. Geschichte (talk) 12:47, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

• If I'm not mistaken, "FK Lyn" or "FC Lyn Oslo" was established in the 90's or early 2000s like a "elite football club" (toppfotballklubb), like a lot of others Norwegian football clubs have done, to differ from the "youth and amateur club" (breddefotballklubb). That means that most of the clubs achievements (2 leagues, 8 cups ++) were actually won by "SFK Lyn", and makes this a whole lot more difficult. Just as a note, on nowiki, FK Lyn has been moved to Lyn Fotball, but as you said before, "that shouldn't be held up against this as a benchmark", but it gives us an indication. I guess this boils down to whether NFF and SFK Lyn considers the new "Lyn 1896" as holder of the 2 league and 8 cup titles. Mentoz86 (talk) 15:51, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

• Yes, the situation now is that Lyn only has a breddefotball section, but that the club itself divides this into Lyn Fotball (bredde) and Lyn 1896 (top). FK Lyn doesn't really have anything to do with it, but perhaps that article should be shrunk, the history section limited to the years that FC Lyn Oslo/FK Lyn (it was renamed) actually existed, and the rest of the history moved to SFK Lyn or a new article about Lyn Fotball. • I notified Jolicnikola about this discussion, but there hasn't been a response yet. But I feel that if we divide the club into three articles, (SFK Lyn, FK Lyn and Lyn Fotball) we are creating an artificial distinction between SFK Lyn and FK Lyn, because FK Lyn was the natural successor of SFK Lyn. I mean, you wouldn't create two different article about Vålerenga IF Fotball and Vålerenga Fotball, just because of a name-change? Creating a new article about the third-division-club Lyn Fotball might be a good idea, and revert the changes about FK Lyn during the last six months, and when we know more we might merge the two articles. The "new" club Odd Grenland is considered a successor of Odd BK, while the new club Sandefjord Fotball is not considered as a successor of Sandefjord BK, even though this is three totally different cases, I have a feeling the NFF would consider Lyn Fotball as a successor of FK Lyn - but we don't know that yet, so I guess there must be two different articles. I don't see how a single article about a single rape in a single city has any significance for an article about crime in the whole of Norway in general. There should however be several articles that focus on the bigger picture, whether it's the rape wave, terror readiness, criminal groups from Eastern Europe, funding or whatnot. Yes. Fosen Næringshage, 7130 Brekstad would be sufficient, but if Fosen Næringshage is located at Meieriveien 5 you can write the adress like that: Fosen Næringshage, Meieriveien 5, 7130 Brekstad. The Auld alliance and Norway

Just wondering if any of you'd be interested in looking closer into weather or not the article about the Auld alliance belongs to this project... Look at the discussion section for more info this user comment: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Auld_Alliance#Documents_relating_to_the_Norwegian_involvement gives some examples of why the article might belong to this project, while other people commenting there things otherwise. The current version of the article don't mention Norway at all although the Norwegian article by the same name have plenty of information about Norways involvement. I recommend editors keep Wikipedia:WikiProject Norway/Article alerts on their watchlist. It is updated by a bot whenever articles tagged with our project banner or placed in project categories enter various workflows (such as Articles for Deletion, Requests for Comments, Peer Review, and many more). There is an edit war going on in the article about the Norwegian foundation Stiftelsen Kvinneuniversitetet i Norden.

Maybe someone who is not one of the "usual suspects" can weigh in on the notability of the references from Aftenposten and Bergens Tidende.

The subjunctive in Norwegian

I've always fancied creating an article on the (nearly dead) use of the subjunctive mood in our wonderful language. However, I'm a bit uncertain about whether I should create an article entitled Subjunctive in Norwegian or a general article entitled Subjunctive in Scandinavian languages. The former would be the most common (there are at present only articles about subjunctive in specific languages, not in language groups), but the latter would be the more semantically correct, since the subjunctive is effectively equally used in Danish, Norwegian and Swedish. Also, I would be greatly appreciative of anyone pointing me in the direction of grammar books dealing with the Norwegian subjunctive, both descriptive and prescriptive. My only concern is that its use in Norwegian is nearly moribund. There are a few fixed expressions which take use of the subjunctive, like "Kongen leve" and "koste hva det koste vil", but it is very little used on sentence level. On the other hand, we have articles about the English subjunctive and Subjunctive in Dutch; the use of it in those languages belongs almost as much to the past as it does in Norwegian. Eskil Pedersen

Hi there. There is currently an edit war going on about Eskil Pedersen's article, with three participants: User:Toresbe, User:Roghue and myself. Toresbe is a member of AUF and have done an excellent job removing unsourced rumours and personal attacks from this article, and this is what the article looked like before me or Roghue did any edits. Since then Roghue have added (imo) well-sourced criticism of Pedersen, while Toresbe have been trying to remove some of it, while I have been trying to revert toresbe's edit and instead tweaking the article to a more NPOV by trying to fix the issues Toresbe have written in his edit summaries when he have removed the text. That edit war lasted till 10 January, and I feel that this version was something all three could live with. However, after Roghue addition on 17 April, another edit war have engaged, which I feel is much less constructive then the previous one. My opinion is that Toresbe is violating WP:COI, by removing sourced information that might put Pedersen in bad light, while his opinion is that he is right to do so per WP:COATRACK, WP:UNDUE and WP:BLP. I admit that this is simply a content dispute I want some more experienced editors to have a look at this so we can settle with a neutral version of the article. Würth Liga Cup

I found some info on RSSSF about a Norwegian League Cup in the early 1990s, here is the links on RSSSF: 1992 and 1993. After googling it, I found it discussed on a couple of foras: vgd, kfl and rbkweb and it looks like the name was Würth Liga Cup. Are we making the best use of our noticeboard? I feel we are not. Are there any changes we can insititute to make it into more of a dynamic tool than it currently is? I believe we can improve this. At the moment, its primarly focus is for creating articles, and it's almost only Tippeligaen-players from 1995 and Architects on the list. I think we should move our focus to improve articles, as we already have a huge amount of stub. We should update the Wikipedia:WikiProject Norway/Cleanup listing, and instead of simply adding a bunch of names we should add a few articles that we really think we need (like the three current Ullensaker/Kisa players that Geschichte added with this edit). So basically, have a few requested articles, more requests for expansion, get a up-to-date cleanup-listing and list some articles that should be taken up to GA and maybe FA status (Even though we have some editors doing a magnificent job on the GA's). Margaret, Maid of Norway

There have been some very tedious goings on at Margaret, Maid of Norway, principally concerning the meaning of Jomfruen av Norge. The current text states that this is "literally 'The Young Lady of Norway' ", although various editors seem to think it should state 'The Virgin of Norway'.

An explanatory hidden note was left thus "VENNLIGST LES DETTE: FORANDRE IKKE 'YOUNG LADY' TIL 'VIRGIN'. I HØYMIDDELALDEREN VAR 'JOMFRU' ELLER 'JUNGFRU', SOM BETYR 'UNG FRUE', EN BETEGNELSE SOM TILSVARER DAGENS 'PRINSESSE'. ORDET HADDE INGENTING MED SEKSUALITET Å GJØRE. DEN SISTNEVNTE BETYDNING KOM PÅ 1800- ELLER 1900-TALLET. SE ELLERS HER: http://www.nob-ordbok.uio.no/perl/ordbok.cgi?OPP=jomfru&bokmaal=+&ordbok=bokmaal".

I take this to mean something like: "at the time the phrase was in use (the late 13th century) 'Jomfruen' did not have the modern sexual connotation of 'virgin' " - however my knowledge of the Norwegian language is scant, and far less do I have any understanding of the subtleties of changing use and meaning. Your understanding of Norwegian is very good, here is a translaton: "Please read this: Do not change 'Young Lady' to 'Virign'. In 'høymiddelalderen' (probably the 13th century) 'Jomfru' (Virgin) or 'Jungfru' (Young lady) had the same meaning as today's 'princess', and was not related to sexuality until the 19th and 20th century." with a link to an online norwegian dictonary that doesn't back up that Norwegian 'jomfru' could mean princess. What Mentoz86 said. To add, "Jomfruen av Norge" is a Norwegian translation of her English nickname "Maid of Norway", and it doesn't make any sense to have a (different) translation back to English in the article. Eisfbnore recently received an unambiguous reprimand at WP:ANI for vigilante behavior, yet persists in leveling accusations against me of trying to compromise the integrity of Wikipedia, specifically here at WT:NORWAY. Template:Largest cities of Norway

Could someone have a look at this template? An IP user has been altering the populations without sources and changing the ordering of entries in a way that doesn't correspond even to the population figures as s/he would have them. I've reverted to a version that at least ranks the cities in the order of the populations given; however, the population figures do seem to be problematic (perhaps out-of-date)—they for the most part don't correspond to those given in our articles on the individual cities. Also, the source link at the top of the template mistakenly leads to information about the largest cities in Albania rather than Norway; but if one looks on the same site's list for Norway, it includes only 10 cities rather than the 20 in our template, with population figures that don't correspond at all to those in the template. Is there some source (recent census, perhaps) that can be used to straighten all this out and properly source the information in the template? I'm afraid this is quite beyond my expertise. What the IP did is clearly vandalism. When it comes to sourcing, ssb.no is a good place to look and I will have a look later on. The numbers look correct, but they are organized after "highest populated urban area" instead of "highest populated municipalitites" which is the most common in Norway. Population for cities is problematic for Norway, because the official definition of city (or town) doesn't correspond to the popular definition. It would be more reliable to have a list of largest urban areas in Norway and/or a list of largest municipalities in Norway. There are reliable sources for both of these, but not cities/towns. I've just noticed that we also have Template:42 most populous cities of Norway, which specifies "urban settlements" and which is actually used in the articles about the places named, whereas Template:Largest cities of Norway is transcluded nowhere in article space except the "Demographics" section of Norway itself. Just noticed this: Category:Norwegian military athletes. What is a military athlete? A sportsperson who competes in specific military events such as military pentathlon? A sportsperson who served in the military while active on an elite level, before, or later? Is the one-year compulsory service enough, or would they have to attend befalsskole or krigsskole? I believe it's just a translation of de:Kategorie:Sportsoldat (Norwegen), and it looks like the Germans have mixed biatlethes with military officers who happened to be athletes. Alexander Os don't belong in this category, which leaves us at one article in that category. Might be a bit overcategorization, but the subcat should be kept. At first glance, the biatlethe(s) should be removed while maybe Sigurd Wathne and others like it might be added to the category. I still don't think they are "military athletes" just for having been athletes at one point and served in the military at another. I am therefore depopulating the category now, effectively discontinuing it with no prejudice for recreation by someone who can define and establish the term "military athlete" (though we already know about military pentathlon). A military athlete is an athelete who is a member of the armed forces and competes in military sporting championships. Many Norwegian athletes compete with support from the Norwegian military. The biathletes and the skiers have been the most common but other sports have been supported as well. Individual athletes are supported as members of the armed forces in addition to the more regular sponsoring of sports. This is common in all countries but not wiedly known in Norway. I remember seeing Raphael Poire in a French army uniform, but have rarely seen Norwegian athetes acnowledge their military support. Liv Grete Poire in comparison is/was a Home Guard soldier (http://www.fofo.no/OL-kongen+bommet+i+milit%C3%A6rt+VM.b7C_wBDWYQ.ips ) as most of the Norwegian military athletes are and competed in military championships, but I have never seen her in uniform in the press. I remember Bjørn Dæhlie did mention his HV-background and has been active publicly on several occations (http://arkivgd.ha-nett.no/vis_sak.asp?refnum=11153). Ole Einar Bjørndalen, Dag Bjørndalen, Egil Gjelland, Tor Arne Hetland, Kristen Skjeldal, Anders Aukland and Tom Stiansen to mention a few Norwegian military athletes from the link above. All were home guard soldiers and competed in the military world championship.

I think the category could be usefull. It is possible to verify and the information is notable.

People that have participated in military sporting championship, fair enough. But you mention other athletes with a background from HV, right? That would be about 90% of all Norwegian male athletes wouldn't it, as I don't believe any athlete would have a good reason to skip the Conscription, and most people are later called up to HV. It was not my intention to imply that all athletes with some previous military connection should be included. Only those who have competed at a certain level in military sports or military sporting championships. All of my examples above fits that bill. The HV link is simply that as far as I know the majority of the Norwegian military athletes were/are connected to HV. This must be for practical reasons as all other units demand full time employment. You can also volunteer for HV without prior military service, which I wonder if several of the athletes have done to be allowed to compete.(NSF)

As a side note: there is a special quota of exemption afforded to top athelets who wish to skip conscription to concentrate on sports. Something no other profession in Norway is awarded. Bergen Oilfield Services

Bergen Oilfield Services is a Norwegian company that filed for bankruptcy in 2011. However, that does not necessarily mean it no longer operates. I tried to do some research to find out if the company is still operating but didn't have much luck. Anyone know of anything or a better way to find out?

The only thing I can find is that a lawyer has been put in charge of the company's assets (and the corresponding holding company's separately), which as far as I can tell is with the purpose of selling them in order to pay back as much debt as possible. Norwegian cupfinalist

When adding info to the Norwegian Football Cup finals in the beginning of the 20th century, I often find wikiarticles about people with identical names that was between 20 and 30 years at the time of the final, which indicates that it could be the same person. If you for instance look at Niels Onstad, do you believe it is likely that the former shipowner and art collector played in the 1928 Norwegian Football Cup final? I'm not going to do any own research and change anything without a source, but I'm curious if people notable for anything else then being a footballer could have won the football cup when they were "young". Religion in Norway

There is a discussion in the talk:Religion in Norway pages on the status of the Norwegian Humanist Association and how it should be dealt with in that article. The first issue is whether a line should show for it in a bar chart and a second issue is whether the article should be renamed to reflect that legally Humanism is a "life stance" and not a religion though as far as I can see for many practical purposes it is treated like a religious denomination. More Sju hav socks?

I am quite uncomfortable bringing this up, but I feel a need to ask if others have the same impressions about two accounts that are fairly prolific in some of the same areas as the other socks of banned sockmaster Sju hav (talk · contribs), namely Roghue (talk · contribs · count · logs · page moves · block log) and Pass a Method (talk · contribs · count · logs · page moves · block log). Could Sju hav have been operating several simultaneous accounts, yet keeping activity and focus of some in such a manner that they went undetected until the more activist-focused accounts were blocked? I'm asking here to solicit some reactions before I decide whether to file more sockpuppet complaints related to the Sju hav individual. I have no experience with Pass a Method, but I have seen quite a lot of Roghue's edit, and I'm confident that he is not a sockpuppet of Sju hav. From my experience, Roghue is trying to contribute positively to articles about Aalesunds FK and politics (even though his political view might be the same as Sju hav's). OK, good about that. I just would like to comment that I do think also that Sju hav was attempting to contribute positively, and was so even for the most part. The problem was apparently block evasion. Well yeah, some of Sju hav's contributions are positive, but it's a reason that he was blocked in the first place, wasn't it? Roghue has now been blocked by Rettetast as a sockpuppet, without further explanation. Maybe that's why there are so few Norwegian editors in here; every time a new user come along and do stuff that one of the admins in this projects dislike, the user gets blocked as a "sockpuppet of Sju hav"? If that is the case, that is extremely unfortunate, obviously! I started this thread to make a "gentle" approach, i.e. to add an additional layer of checks to avoid innocent users being affected. Adding articles to Category:Articles containing Norwegian language text

We seem to be doing well when it comes to applying {{lang-no}} to automatically include articles in Category:Articles containing Norwegian language text. The problem is when the order is reversed, i.e. when the Norwegian prahse appears first and the English translation follows in parenthesis. Naming of Norwegian football leagues

Three years ago, Norwegian football league were named Norwegian Premier League, Norwegian First Division, Norwegian Second Division and Norwegian Third Division. Then the top three league were renamed to their sponsor-names, and after the Second Division changed it sponsor name it was moved back to Norwegian Second Division. User:Eldumpo has started a discussion on Talk:Norwegian Second Division if that article should be moved to 2. divisjon which is the name that all the sources uses, and I want more comments from some experienced Norwegian editors. --Mentoz86 (talk) 19:07, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Falk Rovik

Someone at the WP:Help desk claiming to be Falk Rovik is disputing the factual accuracy of a mention of him being a "convicted murderer" in the Erik Solheim article. According to an article used to cite this claim Rovik was "ruled insane and sentenced to 10 years preventive detention". The first Norwegian actress in the first Norwegian theatre

Hello! I am interested in theater history and are currently focusing on the first professional actress in Norway, whom I have identified as Christiane Hansen. The first permanent professional public theater in Norway was as I understand the theatre of Johan Peter Strömberg in Oslo in 1827. In this article: [10], Christiane Hansen (later married Lang Bocher) is briefly mentioned as the first actress of note on that theatre. But that is all. I have found nothing more. Does any one here now anything more? At least the year of birth and death? Is she perhaps more easy to find under a different name? Norwegian diplomat stubs

Hi. I have been looking at biographical stubs of unelected officials, particularly non-notable, very short orphaned articles lacking references etc. I’ve found a set of 97 articles at Category:Norwegian diplomat stubs, which seem to fit this pattern.

The standard of notability has been set at WP:DIPLOMAT which explains, "Diplomats who have participated in a significant way in events of particular diplomatic importance that have been written about in reliable secondary sources. Sufficient reliable documentation of their particular role is required." May I ask which Norwegian publications should be regarded as “reliable secondary sources”? Does this project have a view on this?

Hello, I am signed up a member of this project, but hasn't been involved in creating these articles. I notice many of them use Store norske leksikon (SNL) as their source. That's the leading traditional encyclopedia in Norway and an entry there will often be seen as a strong indication of notability by Norwegian editors. But the entries in SNL for these diplomants appear to be short and CV-like, and I think you may be right in your suspecion that many of these aren't notable by the Wikipedia guideline you quote. If they have an entry in Norsk Biografisk Leksikon (NBL) it might be a stronger indication of notability, as these entries are longer. Other than that, coverage in history books and other academic papers etc. may make some of these diplomats notable, but this isn't so easy to check. Some of the diplomats are notable as politicians or in other civil servant positions.

New government agency through merger

The Norwegian Environment Agency was created in 2013 through a merger of two other agencies. I have created an article for it, but what should be done with the articles for the two former agencies; should they be listed as defunct or redirected to the new agency? This isn't a department, but an agency, which do not change names that often. It's also not just a simple name change, but a reorganization, which is also usually the case for departments. If departments get a new article for every reshuffle, then I guess it's okay in this case as well. I they don't, that doesn't mean it's wrong to do so in this case. It might also be a good idea to look at how mergers are handled for other kinds of organizations. I think it might depend on how much there is to write about the different organizations, past and present. Ters (talk) 16:50, 8 November 2013 (UTC)

A great article about Norway, but..

In the intro (if you will), in the third paragraph and the last few sentences I found a few sentences that came across as fairly biased:

Key domestic issues include immigration and integration of ethnic minorities, maintaining the country's extensive social safety net with an aging population, and preserving economic competitiveness.[2][11] Petroleum industry accounts for around a quarter of the country's gross domestic product.[12]

I do not know if this group are made up of Norwegians, but I myself is a Norwegian, and I find it a bit odd that "immigration and integration of ethnic minorities" are lined up as number one here. It made me think that it is probably someone who votes for FrP who wrote it.

I strongly recomend you change it. It is in fact not such a big issue in Norway that it even deserves mentioning here. At least if you insist on keeping it there, please put it last, at the very least.

I did a Google search on Norway "Key domestic issues include immigration and integration of ethnic minorities" and found that exact text on many, many web pages. Some detective work showed that it comes from the U.S. government (see the refs for "key domestic issues" in the article Norway, presently #2 and 11), notably the CIA. Unless a Norwegian source is found for this claim, it shouldn't be in the article. Removing it. Hordaland (talk) 20:12, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

I've been through Dragsvik, Norway, many times. (There's not much there but the ferry dock.) Now I've just looked it up in the new map book from the automobile assoc in Norway, just to be very sure, and there is no "Dragsviki". So I've changed our Dragsvik article to Dragsvik, Finland. Anyone wikilinking Dragsvik will be sending people to the Finnish railway station, as before, but they'll see that they've arrived at Dragsvik, Finland.

(Perhaps, formally, someone should write a stub about the ferry dock in, and the ferry connections from, Dragsvik, Norway. Then Dragsvik could be a disambiguation page.)

The officially correct spelling is Dragsviki, for what it's worth. For those that don't know Norwegian language laws, that means it's illegal for Norwegian government agencies to spell it differently. (The spelling has however been grandfathered from previous laws.) Help with an article?

I need some help sourcing an article, Kule Kidz Gråter Ikke. From what I can find via a Google search, the film seems to have a lot of hits and at first glance seems to be notable. However since I speak no Norweigan, I'm at a huge disadvantage here. Can someone help find sources? I'd hate to see this deleted because the sources are in another language and the people searching are only fluent in English, which happens all too frequently, sadly. My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Find sources?

Someone recently created the page Fredrik Skogsrud and it's nominated for deletion as a BLP without any sources. So far I can't find anything that really shows that he's notable enough for an entry. I found an article in a smallish newspaper, but so far nothing else. Anyone want to see if they can find anything? The article asserts that he's known for one show, but I don't speak/read Norwegian and I can't tell exactly how notable his role was within the show. Reading the Norwegian Bokmål article about the TV series "Costa del Kongsvik": it's a comical 10-part series that started 4 March this year; it's a follow-up to two earlier series and again all the main characters are played by the same woman. The 30-minute short film "Leo" hasn't premiered yet; here's a 30-second teaser for it. Fredrik himself doesn't have an article in either of the Norwegian language Wikipedias. His resume is here.

WP:ENGVAR & EngvarB (US or British English?)

Has it ever been discussed here (and consensus found) on whether Norway articles ought to use US or British English? It might be advantageous to determine that at the Project level, or at least to involve more people in the discussion. It would be nice to avoid argument about this in future. The matter is being discussed/argued at the article Norway, not on the Talk page but in these edit summaries:

• spelling per WP:ENGVAR by script
• rv per WP:ENGVAR: no consensus obtained for change
• rv anti-ENGVAR reversion; no consensus to NOT use British/global spelling re Norwegian articles; UK English is the model most Norwegians learn/use; imposing US spellings there is not called for, nor has there been any consensus to mandate THAT
• rv: please read WP:ENGVAR - it is crystal clear that there is no legitimate reason to change the English variant in an article without strong national ties to the topic. Norway is not British, so this stays at the original variant
• ...reply: WHAT "original variant". go back in teh history; -ised was there for a long time until -ized....and "aging" just looks weird (I'm Canadian btw); strong national ties can mean "type of English used"

I understand the argument for British English; that variant has been taught in Norwegian schools for a very long time and Britain is one of Norway's nearest neighbours. However, WP:ENGVAR says to decide this matter by consensus for each article, so deciding it for a whole Project may be considered to be against the rules. ENGVAR also specifies how to act if consensus is not reached. I'd rather see a 2014 consensus.

Regarding the article "Norway", I took a look at the last version in 2001. There I found both "organized" (USA) and "defences" (Brit.), so the matter was not settled then.

What is the spelling used in Norwegian dictionaries? Sweden is another country where British English and received pronunciation has always been the version taught in schools, and the Swedish-English and English-Swedish dictionaries in my bookcase, from publishing company Esselte and quite possibly the most widely used dictionaries of their sort, use Oxford spelling, which combines -ize with forms such as "colour". It may well be the same for Norwegian dictionaries. --Hegvald (talk) 10:06, 20 July 2014 (UTC)

This can be tricky, because Norwegian contributors, perhaps even all contributors with English as a non-native language, might not be very concious about British versus American English. We Norwegians are taught British English, but are thereafter exposed mostly to American English (although perhaps not so much in writing, as though television, movies and music). I write a mix myself, and would write exactly like the examples from 2001. What Norwegians are taught might have little in common with what Norwegians do. Those exposed to lots of American litterature, will most likely write closer to that, than the British English they were once taught. Futhermore, I don't quite buy it that articles about Norway must be written in British English because that's what Norwegians are taught in school. The article might just as well have been written by someone who's as American English as can be. But it's interesting as a Norwegian speaker to see that British versus American English can cause friction as well, although I don't think bokmål versus nynorsk ever went as far as to dictate that some articles about places in Norway must be in one or the other depending on what is used at that particular location, before the two were split into separate wikipedias. (Not that the spelling issues in Norwegian wikipedias ended with that.) I like the idea of just letting the one writing the main bulk of the article decide, but as is sometimes the case within Norwegian as well, that person might not be consistent with himself, like myself. One might then just have to "find some scales" and see which side the article leans to the most. Ters (talk) 19:31, 20 July 2014 (UTC)

Hmm... It's been a few years now, but the learning material we used in school were all using British English, except on a few pages where it was bringing up U.S. politics and society and stuff and thus switching writing style and pointing out differences between the two. The paper English-Norwegian dictionaries are using British English, and for a few (common) words (like colour/color) the U.S. spelling variants redirects you to look up the word with the British spelling. For words with -ize/-ise the -ise version simply doesn't exist. The Norwegian-English dictionary has the British spelling variant first and may sometimes point out the U.S. spelling variant. The English-English dictionary we were allowed to use on the tests/exam have all the keywords in British English, but does point out when there are U.S. spelling variants. Online dictionaries is a completely different story...

But as user Ters said; with increasing amount of U.S. tv-series and films shown here, the influence of internet, the increasing accept for playing computer games and some popular English books also being available in almost every bookstore before the Norwegian translated versions (for example Harry Potter to mention one - which depending on the bookstore was selling either the U.K. version or the U.S. version) it becomes increasingly muddy how each person ends up writing - without thinking on it. But that said, on the tests/exams in school you would get red pen marks if you used anything but British spelling (at least by my teacher). Can't be bothered to look up the current official learning plans and regulations for English classes, but don't think too much have changed. If a bot ot someone really were to go through the articles and correct non-consistent spelling my personal opinion would be to go for British English because of how we learn it in school (but often forget and mix), the way dictionaries are listed, how the official English version of many public institutions/offices/agencies/titles are, and the much closer ties Norway has to the U.K. over the U.S. through history. --Hekseuret (talk) 12:03, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

I wouldn't make so big a deal of it, if not for the edits I see in articles (not just Norway-related) where the only change is honour to honor or neighborhood to neighbourhood. We learn British English in school and US English from television series and music. A people of many proletarians, Norwegians are, nevertheless, uncomfortable with received pronunciation, which they consider formal and a tad arrogant. Link Norwegians have a rather stereotypical understanding of the UK (more specifically England) and the US. The UK = Queen Elizabeth. The US = everyone wears t-shirts.

I am not sure whether it has ever been decreed somewhere, but Britain's English has been the officially preferred variant for over 1,000 years. Having studied English as an international language (a half year only), I am familiar with the several reasons for the expansion of US English in the late 20th century. The question is whether increasing popular use in Norway during the latest 20-30 years is sufficient for changing Norway's long-time established preference from British English to US English. Let me problematise it further: Norwegians (including myself) do not speak or write pure US English or pure British English, but usually a mix. One cannot claim that Norwegians have deliberately preferred US English, a variant they are not capable of identifying and mastering adequately.

The United States of America is an important friend and ally of Norway. However, Norway and Britain have unique cultural, historical, and political ties through over 1,000 years, and my opinion is that this should be reflected in the language of the Norway article. US English might be considered correct in 50 years from now, but in 2014, presenting Norway in US English would be too radical, the way I consider it. No More 18 (talk) 16:30, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Someone created the page Bjelleklang and it's nominated for deletion as a BLP without any sources. So far I can't find anything that really shows that he's notable enough for an entry. therefore the article does not meet Wikipedia Notability guidelines .Samat lib (talk) 09:03, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

A current police investigation: the Monica Case

One of the other wikipedias is having problems with the following topic: the powers that be, are not allowing text about the number of whistleblowers in the case and the number of police officers under investigation by the national police internal affairs investigators, in the Monica police investigation. (4 people of each category so far.) Other details about the case: an 8 year old allegedly committed suicide, the police investigation was laid to rest, a whistleblower on the police force results in renewed investigation, one suspect arrested (for the original crime) and a police chief stepping aside after the National Prosecutor chewed his hide. Involved in the case on the other wikipedia, and blocking contributors of the article, is an administrator who previously removed text and citation about local nationals being involved in a local massacre during World War Two. In 1885 it was adopted as an official language in Norway alongside Danish. In 1929, Landsmål was renamed Nynorsk. The name Landsmål is sometimes erroneously interpreted as meaning rural language or country language, due to the Norwegian use of the word "land" in the meaning "countryside, rural area".
• Before the advent of Landsmål, there was no written standard for Norwegian language, though written Danish, which was the commonly written language in Norway and generally intelligible by Norwegians, was sometimes referred to as Norwegian. Currently, the most widely written language in Norway is Bokmål (Dano-Norwegian), a Norwegianised descendant of the Danish language.

Redirects are normal pages that simply redirect. To get to the page without being redirected, the easiest way is probably to go to the page and get redirected, then click on the small link saying "redirected from". You can then view the history, and even the talk page, as normal. This only works when a page was simply made into a redirect. It doesn't work if a page was deleted, and then a redirect was made in its place later. (Even then, Wikipedia remembers, but only superusers can see the deleted page history, if I remember correctly.) Ters (talk) 21:06, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

I get the impression that this is a pretty notable series in Norway, so there should be some sources in Norwegian. Our article about Gerhard Hansen mentions the Leprosy Museum in Bergen. I think a photo of the museum would add to that article. the translation is correct. (And I can't say that about many other sentences in that article). The article is from July 2011. In the original, there is a link that goes to another sex-filled article (January 2010, translated into poor English) about Jenny and her boyfriend.

If you're wondering whether Jenny S. will appreciate the mention or whether this is appropriate for Wikipedia, I have no opinion. :)

Thank you Hordaland, but it seems I didn't make clear what needed translation. The hook for which we need confirmation was:

The relevant part of the reference translates in Google translate as:

- It is used often in some promotion, yes.

- Is it okay for you?

Two sentence translation needed

Hi all. I'm working on improving all wikipedia articles related to the Norwegian pop band M2M .I recently managed to get the article for their debut single Don't Say You Love Me to good article status. Anyway i'm trying to expand their main article but Bing Translator just isn't helping enough with a couple sentences in this Verdens Gang source: [11]

The bold part is all I need translated, the preceding stuff is just so you can understand the context. Bing gives me "After the tour he called not, do you know when the phone was quiet. It was just the tour, it was over." I'm having a hard time figuring out exactly what that's supposed to mean; i'm trying to figure out why she wrote the song about him. Issue with Bergen article

Back in August, I identified an issue with the Bergen article, whereby a (now-banned) editor had replaced lots of fairly well written prose with single-sentence paragraphs, significantly impairing the article. If this had been picked up at the time (more than a year previously), it would have been an easy revert, but it wasn't and in the meantime, good edits have been made. Sørenga in Oslo

There has recently been done a larger job on the Norwegian article on Sørenga in Oslo. As Sørenga is a part of the Fjord City urban development program there has been major changes in the area the last couple of years. The article has been merged with the article on Sørengautstikkeren, and then been divided in two - one on the historic area and one on the district as it appears today . Naming conventions for places in Norway?

There was a recent redirect made from Lynge, Allerod to Lynge, Allerød Municipality. While it seems valid to correct the spelling to Allerød, was there a recent consensus or convention to also include the word "Municipality" in article names for Norwegian communities?

Request for Norwegian-speaking editor(s)

The AFD debate at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Nazarian Para PMC hinges on the reliability of sourcing and the degree of coverage in the Norwegian press. Because many of the sources are video clips of Norwegian television, translation software isn't going to be any help; it will need a Norwegian speaker to determine which of these videos are reliable sources by Wikipedia's standards, and whether the coverage in these sources is significant or just passing mentions. Kommunesamanslåing - creating fewer and larger municipal units

I have today commented on the talk page of the article List of municipalities in Hordaland, Norway on the ongoing work to create fewer and larger municipal units in Norway.

These changes don't happen over night. Well, formally, they do, but we will know long before. According to the official checklist, it takes 18 months from the decision is final until the changes are put into effect. I therefore see no reason to go into speculation about what might be. The last I heard, there will be two changes in the municipal structure this new year, one is just a border change which I don't remember where is, and the other is a part merge, part border change in Vestfold. When we enter 2018, there will be a change in the county structure (which apparently will lead to some strange county numbering: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 30(?), 18, 19, 20), plus four municipal merges according to what I can find in a hurry (neither in Hordaland). This should be fixed now, unless they chose to bend/break their own rules. 2019 and beyond is still just speculation, unless you want to write about the debates and speculations themselves. A small correction/update: The county number for the new county in 2018 will be 50, not 30 as I wrote above.

I guess one important thing to decide, if it hasn't already, is how to treat these municipal merges. It seems to be important to Norway currently that when the municipalities are merged, the result is a new municipality. Shall we reflect this in our articles by having and article for old Sandefjord and an article for new Sandefjord? I understand that Wikidata might have something to say here, and that they might be just as strict about the new municipality being a new entity. And going one step further, is 5001 Trondheim of 2018 the same entity as 1601 Trondheim of 2017? Ters (talk) 05:26, 12 October 2016 (UTC)

The article on Synnøve Macody Lund was rewritten by this former Professor and WP regular at the request of a reader, which coincided with the premiere of an English-language subtitled version of a television series featuring this actor. The aim was to make the article encyclopedic. My knowledge of Norwegian and Danish are limited, but I have done the best that I can to ensure that information appearing is sourced. (Almost all remaining unsourced material was taken from the Norwegian language wikipedia articles for tis actor, or for her former partner.) The matters of the tags appearing, and the numbers of citations appearing, are either self-evident or are discussed in Talk sections (to date, of which, I have been the only contributor). Please feel free to move this further, using new or better sources, and/or to correct any mistakes I have made in choosing and extracting information from the non-English language references. Otherwise, please note, reFill was inoperative at time of this editing, so all citations were filled manually (!). The aim there was to make them uniform, so as to create a standard for further additions. (Per WP policies, I followed citation appearances and date formats already appearing.) Great progress on women's biographies in Norwegian

The Gender by Language statistics for last week show astonishingly good results for the Norwegian (bokmål) wiki. Out of 515 new biographies, 256 or 49.71%, were on women. Overall, Norwegian is also the best European language for women's biographies with 21.83%. By contrast, the EN wiki is at 16.77%.--Ipigott (talk) 09:14, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

Hei RichardMattias. You do it by "moving" the page - see Wikipedia:Moving a page. Basically this process creates a new page, transfers all the article and its history to the new title, and leaves a redirect at the old title (in case someone is searching under the old title, or clicking on a link elsewhere in wikipedia). Ammerud

This article has a location error because it's location is outside of the region map in the infobox. The map is that of Oslo (the city), but Ammerund is located in Oslo county. Is there a better map to use here other than Norway? MB 17:24, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

Actually Ammerud is within the city. Ammerud is located in bydel Grorud, and at (or in) Ammerud is where Grorud's administration has its offices. I don't know about the map situation. 176.11.72.146 (talk) 09:35, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

The map used is not a map of all of Oslo, no matter how you define it. It could have been if it was meant to show the medieval Oslo, but it is too big for that. Furthermore, Oslo city, municipality and county are one and the same (using the formal definition of city, which is all but defunct in Norway). The statistical urban area called Oslo does however extend beyond the county, yet does not fill all of it, but that is irrelevant here. Ters (talk) 16:07, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

Well then if the map labeled "Oslo" just a portion of Oslo, i.e. downtown, a different map should be used so that the location of the point designating Ammerund on the map is actually within the map. If you look at Grorud, there is another unlabeled map there showing Grorud. That is probably the entire OSLO city and should be used in Ammerund also. MB 16:14, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

Whether the map used for Grorud is of the entire city is debatable. It is apparently a map of the boroughs, however there are some areas not currently considered boroughs (they were before according to Wikipedia) that belong to the city and are governed by the city council (which also functions as county council). The only modern maps I can find of all of Oslo are this road map and this map of boroughs plus Marka, but they seem to be bad choices for other articles. This is by the way a map of downtown Oslo. Is it even needed when the other site is gone? It is a notice not to falsely treat the article stolen from elsewhere, but when that elsewhere no longer exists, that seems unnecessary. Deputy representatives at Storting

Hello, I was wondering if I could get some clarification from anyone who knows anything about Norwegian politics/elections. In cleaning up some orphaned articles, I came across Asle Amundsen, who is listed as a deputy representative from 1985-1989. He was never a regular representative, apparently. Can anyone clarify what this means in terms of what a deputy rep actually does politically? Is a deputy rep an elected official in the same way that a regular representative is? Are they like an assistant to the representative? Are they considered to be fully members of the legislature in the same way that a regular representative is?

I guess what I'm trying to determine is, overall, how notable is a deputy representative compared to a representative. Obviously a regular representative is notable by way of the notability guideline for politicians, but I'm not sure where a deputy rep would fall on that guideline. The importance of a vararepresentant (I'm not sure deputy is a good word for this) will vary. In the last hundred years or so (except wartime), the cabinet has been made up of at least some elected members of parliament (usually at least the party leader[s]). Since you can't be both a minister and a member of parliament, their position in parliament must be filled by a replacement. Assuming the cabinet does not resign or gets overthrown by the Storting, this replacement will basically function as any other representative throughout the entire four year period between elections (but it is made clear that they are not). If the cabinet falls, its elected members return to parliament and their replacements must give their seats back. Others may just fill the position of a regular representative who is absent. In any case, they are simply the next person on the list of candidates for the same party in the same county that didn't get elected or is already serving as vararepresentant. If the party had just gotten more votes in that county, they would have been proper representatives. According to Norwegian Wikipedia, the same is the case if a representative dies. That is at least how I understand it as a voter, complemented by Norwegian Wikipedia. Ters (talk) 20:47, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

Yeah, apologies about the terminology, that seems to be what is used all over enwiki so I used that. So...okay. Someone who is the vararepresentant would probably be notable if they served in place of the representative for the whole term, or if they stepped in because the representative died, because it seems like they are basically functioning as a member of Parliament. But if they only stepped in temporarily while the representative was on vacation and never otherwise functioned as a member of Parliament, they would probably not be notable? (For all I know, it might be the Storting itself that came up with using the word deputy, but at the time I answered, it wasn't a familiar use of that word. Having since consulted a few dictionaries, it appears that the word deputy has a broader range of meanings than I knew of. In this case, it means substitute, and not representative or envoy.) I think a deputy member of parliament can make as much of an impact as a regular member, considering that their votes (in parliament) does not count less (that would ruin the point of filling the vacant seat), that there are a lot of members of parliament that are unknown to most people and that the party leaders often keep their party members in line. Given a strong enough personality, they can affect the course of the country as much as any other. That would likely cause enough publicity to take notice of beyond just being on a list of representatives, though. It should however be noted that the absence of a member of parliament isn't always filled by a replacement. The press did some writing last year about members of parliament, especially party leaders, being AWOL a lot. Ters (talk) 07:18, 17 February 2017 (UTC)

As a native speaker of (American) English and a long-time resident of Norway, I find the use of "deputy" here very wrong. "Substitute" is the first term that comes to mind. Whenever even a small, local organization elects officers/committee chairs/other representatives, "vara" are elected at the same time. (Until recently, the word was "varamann, varamenn" or the long "vararepresentant", but since changing man to woman was a bother, the word "vara" is now accepted as a noun.) Some people are elected year after year and never do anything but receive minutes of meetings. Others are officially active for shorter or longer periods. They act as substitutes and certainly never (or rarely) as deputies. Fairly often in organizations, the first "vara" is allowed/encouraged to meet without the right to vote but with rights to speak (these are the ones who actually read the minutes they receive). I'm totally neutral on the terminology. I'm only using what is being used in a number of articles on enwiki already. The Storting certainly makes an effort of listing all representatives and "vara" representatives, and they are elected through the same formal process. However, the "vare" representatives are explicitly listed as a such in most listings I find, and one of them[12] makes a distinction between those that "permanently" substitute for others (that is, those substituting for cabinet members) and the others. It seems that most of these lists, including the one I link to, are only available in Norwegian. Ters (talk) 19:43, 17 February 2017 (UTC)

It seems to me like the terminology ("substitute" member) is suggestive that they aren't fully "members" of the Storting and might therefore fail WP:NPOL. I'm going to take Asle Amundsen to AFD as a test case, pointing people to this discussion, to see what the general community thinks. I personally think there is a reasonable distinction in terms of notability between people who sub in for a week while their representative is on vacation and the people who sub in for four years because their representative is part of cabinet and can't remain on the Storting, but I would like to see what the community's thoughts are. I'm going to leave this discussion up for another couple days before starting the AfD, but I'll leave a note here when I do in case anyone who has participated here wants to chip in. A couple of notes on the text in the nomination: A vara is elected just the same way as a regular representative through exactly the same process at exactly the same time. They just sort of "lost" the election. Since the Norwegian election process includes not only voting for a party list with candidates ranked by the party, but also for voting candidates up and down on the list, there is actually a partially active decision of the voters on who it is going to be. It could even be the original top candidate. Not that this really changes the notability of "vara" representatives significantly in my opinion. (A top candidate might often have other claims to fame.) The statement just seemed strange to me. The other thing is that when a representative dies is not the same case as when a representative becomes a cabinet member, as the last sentence of the first paragraph seems to suggest. In the former case, the position is not filled in by a "vara", but by a permanent representative that was until that point a "vara". (I guess that means that if a person is filling in for a cabinet member, but another representative for the same party from the same county dies, the former person becomes a permanent member replacing the dead one, while the next vara takes over substituting for the cabinet member. And if it was the cabinet member who died, the long-term substitute becomes a permanent representative. If that also person also takes over the same or another cabinet post, which is very unlikely, but possible, you end up having a vara substituting for a former vara.) I don't follow this discussion page. Any deputy who actually meets in parliamentary session are considered MPs. We have first, second, third deputies and so on, and the fourth or fifth deputy might never meet in Parliament and are thus not notable. Cheers, Geschichte (talk) 22:02, 7 March 2017 (UTC)

While a "vara" is not legally a lesser member of parliament when in session (as has been pointed out already), nor more subordinate than any other than the party leaders, it might be worth noticing that the Storting does differentiate between representatives, "vara" representatives filling in for a cabinet member and the other "vara"s in their lists. The latter group doesn't even appear in any English list that I could find at the Storting's website. But I guess the question that is supposed to be settled is whether someone is notable just for having certain powers for a few hours, even if all they did was play games on their smartphones. (For this particular representative, smartphones hadn't been invented yet during his term and he spent more than a few hours on the benches, so that particular extreme is not a problem. No MP has been caught playing games on their smartphones for four years straight, yet.) Ters (talk) 07:03, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

In the latter case, that seems correct, although one should perhaps categorize them as both full members and substitutes. In the former case, the Storting itself seems to be clear that they are not "full members" (because they can be kicked out at any moment, I guess), however, the category doesn't say anything about being "full", so that doesn't matter. In fact, if it did, having deputies as a sub-category would be wrong, which is also why promoted substitutes are not categorized as both. I guess. Hey folks! Can anyone confirm that Sandbakken, Sarpsborg is indeed a place? I can't find any mention of it on Google or Google Books (except for a school which appears to be called Sandbakken, but I can't figure out if it's in Sandbakken). The search hits I can find are otherwise all of people surnamed Sandbakken. If I search Geonames the only populated place that comes up is in Oslo. Fixed. And don't waste time open it in the waste of space that is Google, use Open Street Maps, it shows Sandbakken. I don't know if I get this option because I live where I live, but on the right side of the list, I get a choice of Norwegian maps as well, try one of those if you get them (at least the Gule sider map showed Sandbakken). As for the list of Norwegian maps, the one called Norgeskart should be the most authorative there is, although the URL is outdated (a redirect seems to be in place for now). I'm not sure if "urban settlement" is the most correct description of Sandbakken. The name is registered in the Norwegian place name registry as something that might be translated as "part of urban area", although the place name registry appears to use a somewhat different and less formal definition of urban area than what is described in urban area. It could be something like a neighborhood. Apparently within the city of Sarpsborg and the urban area of Fredrikstad/Sarpsborg (the slash is part of the name). Ters (talk) 19:12, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

In the article Kingdom of Norway (1814) the flag has been changed back to a version that is not correct. The lion has too many elements based on fantasy and does not correspond to the picture it's based on. This file, No. 1 in the gallery, should not be used in any articles.

Maria is a painting that has a dark history In 1703 a women named maria painted a picture she named it after herself and people believe that she even mixed her own blood in it now maria kept this painting in her attic as she didn't want her husband to know about it but years later in 1724 she passed away and somebody else moved in they discovered the painting and hanged it on the wall they just thought it was a normal painting that they'd put in the the attic but little did they know its secrets. About a week after the painting was hanged on the wall straight away the home owners noticed its strange behaviour the home owners claim they would hear weird noises coming from the painting and also the painting would stare right at them and and they even claimed that the women's eyes in the painting would move of course this creeped them out and they took it down and threw it out but a few days later it was on the wall and the creepy thing is when the home owners asked each other if they'd hanged it back up they all said no of course a few days later they asked the local church to come and sage there house and when they did the spirit was the spirit of maria and that shed killed her husbands sister and it turns out the blood on the painting thought to be hers was her husbands sisters of course the home owners were shocked and put the painting back in the attic. Restore removed sections?

From Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names) (section permalink) is a link to Wikipedia:WikiProject Norway#Naming. That section does not exist.

Looking at the history, it was removed in Special:Diff/267539604/270634715, a major and apparently undiscussed edit that moved some contents to transcluded subpages. Should we restore some of this or transclude some of it from a new subpage? Sam Sailor 08:47, 3 May 2019 (UTC)

Not correct IMHO. You can use "fører" in compound, non-political Norwegian words like "hundefører", just like you would use "Hundeführer" in German. You can also use Norwegian "fører" for the leader of a fascist or national socialist movement. The German and Norwegian words seem mostly equivalent to me. Regards, Kjetil_r 20:07, 15 May 2019 (UTC)

I agree with Kjetil_r. The noun fører can be applied in many circumstances, which makes it translatable in to a variety of different English words like leader, guide and driver. The latter is perhaps the first meaning that springs to mind for a Norwegian. It is for me at least, but I can't think of any word more suited for translating Hitler's title. Name of Norsk Flygerforbund in English?

As I understand, the literal translation would be the Norwegian Pilots' Union; while a more precise rendering would be Norwegian Airline Pilots' Union. However, in their own literature they refer to themselves as The Cockpit Association of Norway. Their membership in the international pilots' federation is shown as Norwegian Air Line Pilots Association. My sense would be to go with the most precise and closest to the Norwegian − which would be Norwegian Airline Pilots' Union...but comments appreciated. I would be most grateful if an English-Norwegian bi-lingual editor could take a look at the article Owen Wilkes and expand the coverage of his Norwegian experiences based on the Norwegian sources. There are many sources in English which all appear to use suspiciously similar phrasing. There are a number of apparently relevant sources in Wilkes/Gleditsch_trial. That section title seems to be poor English, but that text can probably be understood by those who are familiar with the term "Første- og andregenerasjons invandrer".

Hjelmsgate 3

Hi WP:NORWAY, I recently created an article for Hjelmsgate 3 in Oslo and I was wondering how best to describe it (never visited it in the flesh). I started off calling Hjelmsgate a cultural centre but on reflection if its run by the Stiftelsen Arbeidskollektivet then I suppose it is self-managed. An example of a cultural centre would (I think) be something like Vega Scene, a self-managed social centre would be Hausmania. Hi all. I am currently working on expanding Deaths in 1995 by adding and sourcing all articles in Category:1995 deaths. I managed to slightly expand Inger Marie Andersen by using the Historical Dictionary of Scandinavian Cinema. However, I can't find a source in English that verifies her date of death. Deaths in 1995 is organized by the day people die, and I would really like to add her to the list. If anyone is able to locate a source (perhaps in Norwegian?) it would be helpful. Rock art articles, anyone?

Hello. I'm helping some friends in my Trøndelag neighbourhood and county council administration in their project Bergkunstreisen (The petroglyph trail). I've promised to expand some Wikipedia articles in norwegian about 10-12 rock art sites, and also help them find similar volunteers in en:wp and de:wp who could be of assistance in creating the same articles in english and german. Either by translating my articles from no:wp, or writing new, independent texts.

So far, articles no:Bølareinen and no:Helleristningene i Kvennavika are finished at GA-level in norwegian, and available for translation. The next article will be no:Helleristningene på Evenhus within some weeks.

List of municipality numbers of Norway

Can somebody please look at the Talk page for List of municipality numbers of Norway and move this list per the suggestion to eg. List of municipality numbers of Norway (1837–2017)? I had to revert a massive edit today, and I can understand that a current list is desirable. But the historical 1947 numbering is still important in a lot of contexts, and I'd hate to see it go from Wikipedia. Besides, the new county structure is still not settled, and may be broken up again.

Hi! I've managed to establish notability for the film 5 Lies, but it looks like there's more out there about the movie. If not reviews, then at least coverage of the director apparently having a melt down when his film wasn't a hit. I'm kind of butchering the translations here since I'm using Google Translate - can someone help search for sources and flesh out the article? User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Articles about Norwegian railway transport (in English) are extremely outdated

Most articles about Norwegian railway transport (in English) are extremely outdated as most still state that Vy (formerly NSB) operates services, whereas in fact only about half are operated by Vy nowadays. The other large numbers of services are operated by SJ Nord (aka SJ Norge) and the Go-Ahead group in specific areas accordingly. King's Guard typo

Norwegian Folklore & stories

Hessdalen Lights - misclassified?

Hi - I laughed when I saw it's listed under paranormal. The phenomenon appears to be explained rationally now - and it's directly linked to geology of the area and mining. So the article could use some new classification. I haven't updated anything yet - I don't really know the subject. There's a link to the research on the talk page. Comments, edits welcome. Request for someone familar with Norwegian sources regarding something that Norway's supreme court ruled on?

I was hoping that there might be some sort of news coverage that isn't a primary source like this, a blog, or Bitter Winter (which is considered unreliable on the perennial sources list), which seems to be what comes up when I search for this in English. But apparently this is something that Norway's supreme court has ruled on (specifically that they have the right to practice disfellowshipping) but that they are also losing their funding as a registered religious community. This seems like the sort of thing that should have some sort of independant and reliable coverage in Norweigan, so I was hoping maybe someone could verify that for me? I guess the supreme court issue might be this. There is some more about losing funding and possibly getting deregistered here. Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Lists of municipalities

We have List of municipalities of Norway and List of municipality numbers of Norway, which would seem to be ripe for merging, but apparently not, per this discussion. Can the latter page be merged into List of former municipalities of Norway instead? Something really should be done. The current situation is… suboptimal. - dcljr (talk) 16:56, 3 May 2023 (UTC)

Strictly speaking, it can't be merged into List of municipalities of Norway because it contains historical municipalities, and it can't be merged into List of former municipalities of Norway because it contains non-historical municipalities (although not all). It could be split into a list of current municipality numbers and a list of historical municipality numbers, and then have each of those merges into respective list of municipalities, but that would be suboptimal if you don't know if the number you want to look up is historical or not.

What exactly is the problem with List of municipality numbers of Norway? The fact that it is not updated? That people end up there instead of List of municipalities of Norway when wanting to look up numbers that are definitely current and therefore having to dig through a bigger list? (At the moment, people are more likely to have historical numbers as numbers are being changed quite frequently.) Something else? It is not like Wikipedia has no room. The list should not be updated, because it is a valuable tool for historical research in Norway. I have proposed a renaming to eg. "List of municipality numbers of Norway (1837–2017)" and then anyone should be welcome to keep another updated and regularly maintained list of current municipalities. But please let us keep the list as it is. The 1947 division is the "gold standard" for historical purposes.

There are two references to Norwegian Public Roads Administration 1989, currently numbers 40 (p.48) and 43 (p.49). However there is no citation corresponding to these references. There are citations for Norwegian Public Roads Administration dated 2010, 2009 and 2006 but nothing for 1989. It's not so much an error as an inadequate citation. It's given in "Harvard style", with no URL or title, only the name of the organization and year. (I suppose it's possible this info exists in a previous revision of the article — I haven't checked.) As Martin alluded to, there are links to resources from the same agency for other years, all of which are at their website, vegvesen.no (a live link to which can be found in the article Norwegian Public Roads Administration). Presumably this requires someone who knows Norwegian to search that website for the information in the article that is cited with this reference (currently refs 40 and 43). - dcljr (talk) 03:04, 19 June 2023 (UTC)
