Microsoft articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Microsoft articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. WikiProject cleanup listing

I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). It seems that the codename along with most of the features has already been confirmed for the next major OS of Microsoft. Most of the sources say that the public beta may be released in February 2014.

I'm confused weather the restoration of Windows 9 article is necessary or not. As today I saw some of the news regarding this matter bellow

• New Windows 9 Details Revealed

• Oppose. Hi. When you read keywords like "Microsoft Suggests" and "Users Claim", it means we are still at rumor level. (WP:CRYSTALL) We should wait until we have much more than just a product announcement (we don't even have that; Windows 9 is probably just an unconfirmed name;) or just a rehash of Paul Thurrot's personal opinion. I have never seen any fake news there. Softpedia News is a journal, which means its usefulness is as limited as any other journal, but evidently no less. When I took an article to WP:FA, everyone agreed that third-party publisher descriptions are the only unreliable items on Softpedia. Indeed, most items that you listed are related to Microsoft strategic planning for the next OS instead of Windows 9 itself. For example, "New Windows 9 Details Revealed" refers to the merger of Windows Store and Windows Phone Store, which certainly impact Windows 9 but does not warrant an article.

I can't understand why you propose something based on sources from a publisher whom you condemn entirely in your next post. This gives the wrong impression of having been here for this purpose in the first place. However, you might want to check Google News Search to see what other sources have to say, though at this time there are no encyclopedic items on it.

• Oppose. Unfortunately per WP:NOTACRYSTALBALL we cannot host articles like this unless they have been formally announced or publicly recognized by its creators. For example, we have Category:Upcoming software which lists software that has been formally announced by companies but are still in development and have not been released yet. Same thing with Category:Upcoming video games scheduled for 2015. To be honest, we really don't have any idea if the next iteration will be called '9' or if it will even be a Windows platform at all. So, in the meantime, just stay put and wait until Microsoft formally publishes its codename. —Ahnoneemoos (talk) 02:44, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

• Oppose. My rationale is the same as what Ahnoneemoos said. The uncertainty about version number, 9 or 9.1 or maybe even straight to 11, who knows, is a very good point. The news articles, all 5, were sourced from Softpedia. For future reference, it is better to use more than one source if you are going to mention 5 posts. As for Softpedia, I don't believe that their news stories are ever fake. Sometimes they are conjectural, but that is why they use words like "claim", "could" and "suggest". Sometimes those posts will be proven incorrect, but that doesn't diminish Softpedia's credibility, as they make it adequately clear when content is tentative versus certain. Some Softpedia news is excellent e.g. keeping track of Syrian Electronic Army hack incidents, by date, wave and occurrence number. EDIT: That's just one example. Possible Additions For Microsoft's Cortana Page

Hello,

I am new to Wikipedia, so excuse me if I do anything that may be incorrect.

I am not sure how to go about submitting information to the Microsoft's Cortana Page. I did not edit it, because I do not want to break guidelines. I am submitting this information for someone to review and guide me.

I had an interview about Cortana on the day they announced it at Build 2014. It was with Savas Parastatidis, Principal Architect in Bing, Application Services Group. The interview was approved by Stefan Weitz, Head of Search at Bing.

I believe my interview includes valuable information for this page. Here are a few points:

1) How did Cortana get it's name? Robert Howard, a Principal Program Manager in the Windows Phone team, made the recommendation to Marcus Ash (his manager) to use “Cortana” as an internal codename. That happened at the beginning of the project. Everyone loved the name.

2) Security: Will Cortana save these queries in audio format? What security measures are in place? "We take our users’ privacy extremely seriously. We store our users’ information in a highly secure store. Not even our own developers have open access to the data. The speech queries are completely anonymized. That’s the way the service can improve. However, there is no way to track a particular voice query to a user."

3) Ethics Of Virtual Personal Assistant: Cortana was developed to make life easier. For that concept to really work, you would need to trust the assistant 100%. One could argue that the definitive search results could be paid for. And unlike Bing.com, there would only be room for one answer. What are your thoughts on the ethical challenges at hand and how does Bing plan to handle them? Excellent observation! For a personal assistant to become my gate to the information/knowledge/services world, he/she will have to gain my trust. I truly believe that any service that doesn’t try to truly help the user, that doesn’t have the user’s interests as a priority, will eventually become irrelevant. Personal assistants will further emphasize this point. It’s exactly as in real life. If your personal assistant starts giving you information that isn’t relevant to YOU or that doesn’t really help YOU in completing a task, they will be fired, no? I don’t think there is a difference here.

Cortana doesn’t display any ads. We are trying to do our best for the user. When the user asks a question, we truly try our best to give the best response.

It’s actually an observation we made internally. Since we can only give one answer, we really need to get it right. Instead of showing 10-20 blue links and let the user pick, a personal assistant really needs to show just one answer to a direct question. It’s a very difficult problem to get right.

4) Steps Cortana Takes After a Verbal Query:

a) The voice is streamed to the cloud. b) Our speech recognition servers host speech models which have been trained using Deep Neural Networks. c) The output of the speech reco phase goes through our natural language understanding phase so that we can figure out the user’s intent (e.g. when the user asks if they need an umbrella, then we determine with some degree of confidence that they are interested in the weather). d) In the next step, we go through the conversational management engine that maintains context about the user’s conversations. This allows us to support turns in a conversation and carry the context and the user’s intent forward as we help them accomplish a task. e) We use the information from the user’s notebook to resolve gaps in our understanding (e.g. “home” becomes a geolocation). f) If the user’s intent is to find information, then we query our Bing knowledge sources. g) Finally, we generate language (a response) and then the rendering of the response (HTML) to send to the device.

My concern about this article is directly related to why I came to the article: I have IIS on my Windows 7 machine. I do not know if I need it running. I do not know if it provides functions that I need, or that it is primarily for people who want to develop websites, or even run websites from their machine. I do not intend to run or develop websites. But I cannot tell from this article if I can therefore safely turn it off. Nowhere does the article say simply what its purpose is. I see that it is a webserver but what does that mean for someone who does not run a web page or is not developing a web page? Is IIS needed by the average user of Window 7? I cannot tell from this article. I keep searching through the internet and every article reproduces this same perspective. Nowhere can I find whether I need it if I am not running or developing a website. A simple question. The article assumes too much. Incomplete and incorrect history on Groove Music page

The Groove page has a History section that talks briefly and incompletely about Zune's place in the history of Groove music. As I see it, there are only two possible solutions. The less-preferable solution is to not include a history section at all but that would just be to cover up the important history of Microsoft music applications. The right way to fix the problem is to include the MSN Music history as well and the fact that there is a trend in Microsoft Music to start a new app, convince unwitting customers to spend their money, and then, when the tools aren't profitable, shut them down causing purchasers to lose all that they purchased. I won't even mention that Microsoft Books did the same thing with eBooks as MSN Music and Zune did to music buyers. Since Groove is music we can focus in Microsoft's music app shutdown history and not that it's a repeat pattern across virtually any Microsoft DRM-based technology.

Not including the complete history makes the page simply a brochure authored and controlled by Microsoft. If it is truly an open-source, community-authored, encyclopedia then these inaccuracies and omissions should not stand. They can be written in encyclopedic style and include references but to delete them is to turn Wikipedia into a advertising brochure or magazine. 96.19.193.177 (talk) 17:25, 12 August 2015 (UTC)

Outlook-related edits by User:Ians18

Greetings, everyone. Our fellow Wikipedian User:Ians18 has engaged in a number of edits that I find highly controversial; they are being discussed in Outlook.com § Requested move 17 August 2015. I believe we need additional input. A summary of the dispute is as follows:

Traditionally, both Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Web App / Outlook on the web had four modules: Mail, Calendar, Contacts (or People) and Tasks. But Ians18 changed the names of Outlook.com, Calendar (Microsoft service) and People (Microsoft service) into Outlook Mail, Outlook Calendar and Outlook People and merged Outlook Web App into Outlook.com. He initially said that they are actually renamed, but now has retreated to the position of "their rename is announced and will definitely happen". I, however, cannot see any of these and believe he has taken too much for granted, is sailing too close to WP:CRYSTAL, and his point of view is badly influenced by being an Office 365 user.

Microsoft Certified Professional

Sorry, I should have posted this sooner. Microsoft Certified Professional is listed at WP:copyright problems because of innumerable copyright violations from Microsoft sources, going back to the day it was created, 17 July 2004. It needs to completely re-written from scratch; it will otherwise probably be reduced to a few sentences. If anyone is interested, a re-write can be started here; obviously, no running text should be copied from the current version unless it is definitely established to be free of copyright infringement. We should take a note out of the Apple articles' book

For years I've seen a weird double standard between Microsoft articles and Apple articles here on Wikipedia, Apple articles seem to be expanded upon, well-sourced and detailed while Microsoft articles seem to be minimalistic often first party or no sources present and while the editors of Apple's pages love historic products the moment a product is discontinued on a Microsoft page hoards of editors will try to delete everything about it, and those are quite general things I've noticed I'd like to point out a very recent example of how neglected Microsoft articles are, recently a user created the Surface Pen article as a small stub with no sources or references, so I added references and tried to expand the content a bit but if you'd compare it to the Apple Pencil article about a product that's not only more recent (by several years) has been written less about and is available for less devices and in less variants, the page is way better organised and shows more details.

Another example would be the iPad article Vs. the Microsoft Surface article, the editors of the Microsoft Surface article try to stay as minimalistic as possible, they've even removed all references to software and services that were there before and one can argue that those are mentioned in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 their specific relation to the Surface is not there, while the iPad article goes in full detail about every historical and current device the Microsoft Surface article seems to try to remove any information the moment 2 devices aren't alike anymore, instead of being extremely nihilistic minimalists the editors of this WikiProject should try to emulate Apple articles more.

Date format

Good day to everybody,

I would like to bring up the issue of MOS:DATEFORMAT when it comes to Microsoft-related articles. We all know that Microsoft is an American company. Hence all of its products are Made in USA, and to that extent, all MSFT product-related articles, as per MOS:DATETIES, should adopt MDY dating conventions. This is true for pages like Microsoft Windows, Xbox and even Microsoft Surface.

However, I have noticed this is not the case for Microsoft Office. When I discussed this with an editor, he or she claims that as opposed to Apple Inc., there is no strong US connection as per WP:DATERET, justifying this with the fact that MSFT has more users in China than the rest of the world combined (over 250 countries). The user even stated that such discussions existed in the past, which I cannot seem to locate.

That being said, I would like to ask the community whether agreeing on adopting spelling and dating conventions with regards to MOS:TIES would be possible.

Windows Maps look over

Hi, I was putting the Microsoft Wikiproject on a few Articles that did not have the Wikiproject Microsoft on the talk page. While looking I found this page that was a very small "stub" and had nothing on there. But thinking about it, "well... it is it's own app... Maybe I should add more." Windows Me is more common than Windows ME, Microsoft and PCWorld use Me instead of ME

Microsoft uses the Windows Me spelling. This is the most common spelling and PC World also uses it. Google "windows me" on any search engine and you will see for yourself that Windows Me is more common than Windows ME. Should we use the "Me" capitalisation on our Windows Me article? WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.
