I had discussions earlier this year with the project team involved in the publication of the Dutch language version of the ICD-10 by the Dutch ministry of Health. Obviously this sort of information is necessary for many software applications, such as electronic patient record software. To my surprise, the translations are under copyright and cannot be released to Wikipedia. It also turns out that the translations available are very small in number. That is a great opportunity for Wikipedia, as Wikipedians are capable of efficient translation, and if we could link in all of our existing information to Wikidata, I feel confident we could make a big leap forward in translation of the ICD-11 in languages the WHO doesn't even serve with the ICD-10 today. - Well there are two huge hurdles to cross. First the WHO needs to release their planned coding infrastructure for the ICD-11 to the public domain. I believe this will be difficult, as they sell licenses to changes to commercial software manufacturers. Secondly, we need to find out how we can create a Wikidata infrastructure that will be robust and independant of the ICD-11, that can be interlinked to any other medical standard, such as the DSM or whatever standard any country uses that could possibly overlap with the ICD-11. After all, Wikipedia should not need to change an article about a disease or syndrome based on some random update to any standard coding scheme. Jane (talk) 11:39, 16 October 2012 (UTC)
- The DSM and ICD 11 will be the same this coming version. The head of the ICD 11 division at the WHO is a psychiatric by trade. But yes Wikidata must be able to handle multiple ways of classifying disease.

- Awesome! What are we waiting for? Let's get this division of ICD 11 on board and working with Wikidata! As far as I am concerned, the vision of Wikipedia regarding medical information should be "Imagine a world where, whereever you are, when you have a medical problem you can learn about it in your language and you will be able to check any invoices charged to you or your insurance company". ICD web browser edit
Someone was just putting an external link to their browser for ICD9. See my talk page for a discussion on why I removed it and why it is back. I thought that I should mention this here because it shows demand for people to be able to search the database in new ways, and because the developer was interested in Wikipedia.
