Assessment?

Yes, I agree, however, an article assessment is going to be very hard with just 2 people. I think that getting a scope on the Linux articles of Wikipedia will be difficult without 4+ members. I've just seen the effort you've put forward to all those Wikipedians. Thanks. The amount of people you posted to is incredible. I guess we can say, yea, an assessment would be a good idea. How do you propose we do it now? Surely giving articles assessments would require some kind of an info box on the talk page, something we've agreed on as a bad idea (for now). Portal:Free software

What's this project's relationship with Portal:Free software? — a thing 03:29, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Well, most free software on that portal is GPL, and most GPL software is for Linux. I think Linux software has to be GPL, but I wouldn't be too sure. I know the OS has to be open source, and Red Hat was commercialising it with RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) which was basically free OS but not so free bundled apps and support. --Draicone ^(talk) 11:56, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Yes. Basicly when you buy RHEL (which, now it comes to it, it is one the articles I had my eye on as needing work), you pay for the support, and the license fees for support for non-free stuff such as MP3 support. No. Linux software does not have to be GPL. Most libraries are LGPL licensed to make it possible to write proprietary software using these libraries. Some people believe this should be encouraged, because a lot of software ends up as open source once it stops being profitable, or as the software becomes more complex and the support business model becomes more attractive, and distributing the source becomes helpful in customer acquisition. A lot of proprietary software is actually available for Linux, some of which does not cost money. Check out Adobe Reader and Ahead Nero; Mathematica is an example of software you have to buy licenses for, and is typical of a number of products that are used in academic environments, where Linux is also popular (as, incidentally, is OS X). - Samsara (talk • contribs) 12:55, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

A portal is not a project. A portal is a summary page offering directions concerning a particular field, "featured" articles, "featured" pictures, etc. And as people have pointed out, there is some overlap, but not quite enough, so I guess we wouldn't be maintaining the portal. - Samsara (talk • contribs) 01:06, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Well, if anyone does want to contribute to Portal:Free software, you're welcome. The focus of the portal is not just GPL. The portal focuses on Linux, BSD, GNU, X11, Firefox, OpenOffice, and anything that is free software. So the scope is broader in some ways, because "free software" includes BSD, and the scope is narrower in some ways, because "related to Linux" presumably includes non-free software which runs on GNU/Linux, such as Macromedia Flash and Sun's Java.

One benefit that I see in drawing the boundary on a concept like "free software" instead of a technology such as "Linux" is that the latter's boundary isn't clear to me. Is Macromedia's flash player "related to Linux" by virtue of their being some versions available for GNU/Linux? Is OpenSSH "related to linux" by virtue of their being some versions available for GNU/Linux? I'm not looking for answers, they're just example questions that I think will be more difficult for a "linux" centred project than it is for something centred on "free software".

But that's an implementation detail, and even if one implementation is better or worse than the other, for a successful project the important thing is to capture people's area of interest.

One thing that Portal:Free software is a bit weak on is techy info. The idea of the portal is that if someone is interested in free software and they want to see what Wikipedia has to offer, they can "Enter via the free software door". Portal:Free_software does a pretty good job, IMHO, of this for legal and ethical aspects, but it doesn't have much to offer to a tech. I plan on improving this, but if someone thinks they can do a better job then they'd probably be right. Gronky 01:34, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Salutations

Having been given a nod in the direction of this project, I am interested in participating. If there is some need for assessment of qualifications, let me know, otherwise I'll not parade my arrogance any more than necessary. I would like, however, to expand upon the project's stated goals. I offer the following suggestions for consideration:

• That the first goal, which as of this writing reads "To create a better resource for Linux distributions on the wikipedia." should perhaps be something more like "To improve the quality and expand the range of Linux-related articles on Wikipedia."
• The second goal, which as of this writing reads "To not confuse non-linux users, and to lend insight on how Windows isn't the only operating system." should be divided amongst its components, to create two new goals that might be something like: "To improve articles such that they would serve as useful to beginners and experts alike, by providing both simple and more technical descriptions." and "To spread awareness of Linux, in a respectful and realistic manner, to other Wikipedians."
• And some additional goals:
  • To establish a consistent definition of the term "Linux" for use by this WikiProject and, by extension, throughout Wikipedia.
  • To respect the differences between distributions while maintaing a point-of-view that shows no preference for any specific distributions.
  • To recognize both the strengths and weaknesses of Linux, and convey neither with undue emphasis or lack thereof.

I've taken your first 2 points and incorporated them into the goals section. Thanks, my wording was less than desirable. Your point on establishing a consistent definition for Linux seems more like a short term goal. It is however important. There seems to be no boundary when talking about Linux and the Linux Kernel.

The point on respecting differences and recognising the strengths and weaknesses of Linux is something we should be taking into consideration for everything we write anyway, as per WP:NPOV. Do you really see it as a goal? What do other people think?

Unfortunately, since Wikipedia aspires to be an encyclopaedia, we cannot define the meanings of things outside of their normal context. In the real world, the term "Linux" is ambiguous, and may refer to the kernel or the whole distribution including GNU, and this reference work must reflect that. Anything else would be neologism, which is explicitly prohibited. Linux Article Index

greetings. I got the message on my talk page to take look at this project. I will try to help out to the best of my ability, but life take up too much of my free time and I don't have much to spend on wikipedia any more. After quickly looking it over the first thing that came to mind to improve the project is to organize the linux articles with some sort of list. I am one of the founding members of the Final Fantasy project, and what we did there was create an index for that purpose. On our main page, we should also organize all the FA and GA articles that are linux related for others to see. OpenBSD

OpenBSD is definately not directly related to Linux. BSD was originally based on a non-GPL licenced copy of Unix. The only thing that links it to Linux in that way is it is based on Unix originally. How to start

I propose we should start by taking some of the Good Articles to Featured Article status, one by one. We currently have five of these:

• GNOME - easy
• Linspire - easy
• Perl - technical
• TeX - technical
• X Window System protocols and architecture - technical

I'm not really going to suggest going for the last three, as they're quite technical and probably do better with a smaller, more specialised group of editors. - Samsara (talk • contribs) 23:24, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

I think that GNOME would be a good place to start. The application itself has a massive userbase, and it is pre-installed on many Linux operating systems as default. I've had a browse around for user statistics and found none, but I'd stick my neck out and say about half (maybe less) of all end-Linux users use it. It is to this end that the GNOME article needs to be as informative as possible without alienating the newbie users. If we made it to featured article status, it would possibly advocate to non-linux users the GUI side of Linux, something that hasn't really been done too much. The GNOME article appeals to a lot broader audience than the other articles so it has my back. Would it be better if we moved this list of articles to Mini Collab? --T. Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. Template wording

Linux project article template with parser functions

I'm not sure what the current policy is on the usage of templates for Linux articles, but I've prepared a template which uses the parser functions to add information concerning Wikipedia 1.0. See the template at Template:tuxproj; adding it to talk pages will allow the usage of arguments, such as:

{{tuxproj|class=GA|importance=Mid|selected=yes}}

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. I moved the page so that it is spelled correctly, and also changed the link in the todo list. I decided to keep it on the todo list so that anyone can look over it and make sure that it is fit to be removed, I would hate it if I was the one to judge that it was complete without anyone else having a say in it. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/StartCom -- notable or not?

The following articles have been nominated for deletion as a group:

While there's a conflict of interest concern that these were added by User:Startcom, the main issue as I see it is one of notability. I encourage Linux-knowledgeable editors to weigh in on this topic at the AfD, especially if you know of reliable sources that would establish notability per the Notability Guideline for Companies (and their products). If there are no reliable sources, that would be helpful to know, too. I don't know enough about the topic to understand which if any of the hits I'm turning up in a Google search meet the Reliable Sources Guideline -- for instance, does a listing on DistroWatch[1] count? Separate projects for KDE and GNOME?

Upon looking through some KDE related pages I've noticed that most of them are stubs and the larger ones have in inconsistent style and weak layout. I think that to solve this we should have separate projects for KDE and GNOME, they are both large projects and have many pages on wikipedia, and while I don't know much about the GNOME pages, the KDE pages definitely need improvement, and many of them need almost a full rewrite or need lengthening to a full article from a stub.

I've just created a KDE project at Wikipedia:WikiProject_KDE and would love some new members.

I could work with KDE. I am a programmer, and would like to be part of this project. I also did a little translation of the german page already. As for now, I will probobly go over more on the todo list. I would appreciate it if someone added me on the list of people who are part of the project as "CloneDeath", I am not sure if you guys would appreciate me adding myself. Anyhow, thanks.

Finished the translation

I finished translating the German page on Linux News. There are a couple parts were the meaning could be disputed (particularly the jokes about the "Truth" campaign windows had going, but I did my best). anyways, that should be taken off the "Todo" list, since I "Todid" it (laughs out loud...). I am not that good in german, but I hold my own. However, if you have any spanish pages, alert me immediatly and I will have that sucker done within the hour. I can translate many pages including:

-Chinese (simple and traditional)<br\> -Japanese<br\> -Korean<br\> -Portuguese<br\> <br\> -French<br\> -Italian<br\> -Spanish (My favorite language to translate)<br\> <br\> -Dutch<br\> -German<br\> <br\> -Russian<br\> <br\> -Greek<br\>

Those are (more or less) all the languages I can translate. Tell me if you need any translations ^_^. Also, I speak English, and it is my first language, so you don't have to worry about any Engrish. (ie Donkeykong was supposed to be Monkeykong, but someone who's first language was japanese translated it wrong (they were off by 1 letter), now translaters translate from a foreign to their 1st language (at least that is so for videogames, to avoid the "Donkey kong" incident) )

I'm sorry if this seems like a strange question to you all, but what in the hell does X Windows have to do with Linux? Linux has a loose tie to GNU, through common use of the userland tools they've made, and through sharing the same licences, but Linux has no ties to the X consortiums. 74.14.157.141 02:10, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Then why are you called the Linux Wikiproject, if Linux isn't your focus, but rather, "stuff we want to." I suppose, "wikiproject stuff-we-want-to," wouldn't have been a very good name. Would there be any point to making an article at Linux server (or whatever would be the best title) to act as a central catch-all on this subject? Security-Enhanced Linux needs sources

I'd like to see about putting together a task force to work on improving all maemo and maemo-related articles (with some spillover into more general embedded-Linux stuff including Ubuntu Mobile, and GNOME Mobile stuff). Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Mass deletion of Linux articles

Note that Ham Pastrami seems to have an interest in the mass deletion of Linux-related articles and other computer-related articles. He first put a tag on dozens of articles saying they would be deleted in 5 days due to a lack of notability, even though many are clearly notable, such as the Novell Open Enterprise Server article. After I removed those tags he then started nominating each for the AfD process. I suggest you follow his actions through his contributions list to determine what he will try to delete next. LOL. I nominated a number of Linux distros (what Stu refers to as "mass deletion of Linux-related articles and other computer-related articles") that were of questionable notability, as far as I could tell, per my comment in the immediately preceding section. (Really Stu, you can't even make a fair representation of the issue without injecting hyperbole?) I could be wrong about some of the nominations, and that's fine -- simply vote to keep them or provide a reliable source to verify them and I'll withdraw the nom. What StuRat has done is tried to shoot down every nomination based on his objection to the single Novell article. So yes, the natural course of action was to take it to AfD since Stu cannot disingenuously dismiss the nominations there. I will tell you what I plan to do next -- I'm going to wait for the AfDs to be settled, and in the meantime, I'll be busy replying to all the love letters that Stu is leaving me on my talk page. Notability of distributions

Are people in this project comfortable with all the fringe articles being created for distros that seemingly have no notability? Refer to the List of Linux distributions or Comparison of Linux distributions. A lot of these are somewhat trivial forks/mods of major distros. They haven't received any significant coverage in reliable secondary sources. I'm not deeply knowledgeable of the Linux community or trends so it would be preferable if someone who is could go through the list and use their judgment about whether some of these articles really belong on WP. Some "borderline" cases were not renominated, due to the objection of "mass deletion" (both Stu and DGG expressed that they were bothered by the quantity of articles; which to me is strange because I'm pretty sure that this is not a factor in whether an article should be deleted or not). As a concession I'm limiting the renoms to some of the worst offenders. I'll also reiterate here (as I did in the AfDs) that these are procedural noms -- notability is uncertain to me, I don't necessarily think they should be deleted. Importance in Assessment

Recently, I introduced the Importance scale in WPLinux template in order to further categorize the articles related to Linux. Multi-pointer X

Currently, there is a lot of confusion about multi-pointer X as opposed to multi-touch support in X (which basically doesn't exist yet). I think the Wikipedia article about Multi-Pointer X should distinguish between multi-pointer and multi-touch more clearly, perhaps in a separate header, to avoid this confusion. Template:Linux

I added[5] a new row: “System arrangement and features”. It may be a bad English name for it, but I am unable to invent something better for various low-level system specific topic interesting not for general public, but for geeks, programmers and sysadmins. There are a new article Linux console there, and also a Linux framebuffer. IMHO there should be also placed a link on Linux networking (IP over Linux), but I did not find an article on such general topic.

Also, I added the link module (linux), which is now a redirect. I think that we should distinguish the concept of loadable kernel module (also known as a modular kernel in some sources) and its implementation in the Linux kernel. So, I propose the article loadable kernel module to be splitted. Confusing one and another may also eventually lead to mess in the interwiki. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 10:07, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

Citation templates now support more identifiers

Recent changes were made to citations templates (such as {{citation}}, {{cite journal}}, {{cite web}}...). In addition to what was previously supported (bibcode, doi, jstor, isbn, ...), templates now support arXiv, ASIN, JFM, LCCN, MR, OL, OSTI, RFC, SSRN and Zbl. Before, you needed to place |id={{arxiv|0123.4567}} (or worse |url=http://arxiv.org/abs/0123.4567), now you can simply use |arxiv=0123.4567, likewise for |id={{JSTOR|0123456789}} and |url=http://www.jstor.org/stable/0123456789 → |jstor=0123456789.

article is largely useless

I strongly suggest that you read the fine manpages (use the man command) for the commands you are trying to use. Wikipedia is not a manual or howto guide, so we will not be adding a lot of that to our articles. Also, your Linux distribution should have online forums available where you can find basic FAQs and ask questions. It'd probably be a good idea for you to look them up. For your particular question, you need to place the switch before the arguments: ls -R however, adding "*.txt" will not work as you expect, because the "*" glob works in the current directory and expands arguments prior to running the command. The Wikipedia article "Comparison of Windows and Linux" - bad things are being said about Linux. Please help!

The Wikipedia article Comparison of Windows and Linux has been heavily modified to deliberately distort the truth about Windows security versus Linux security, claiming that Windows is more secure and has vulnerabilities fixed faster etc. There's also more biased statements, recently added, which are deliberately trying to make readers' believe that Windows is faster than Linux in certain areas e.g. networking, graphics performance etc. I've spent months and hours of my spare time improving that page, only to find that a few editors have destroyed all that work. Please help!
