Identifying articles and adding WP:JAZZ banner

In 2010, we had Xenobot Mk V go through Category:Jazz and its subcategories and add {{WikiProject Jazz}} to articles that (1) were within the scope of this project and (2) did not already have the banner template. (See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Jazz/Archives/2010 1#Adding WikiProject banner for history.) Since it has been a couple of years, I propose that we submit a 'bot request to go through and do this again (someone else had already proposed doing this on a periodic basis, anyway). I have gone through the Category:Jazz tree and updated the listings at Wikipedia:WikiProject Jazz/Categories.

In addition to the tasks that Xenobot performed in 2010, I'm thinking to have the 'bot go through articles without an infobox and add needs-infobox=yes to {{WikiProject Jazz}} and, if present, {{WikiProject Biography}}. However, this seems complicated (though not for technical reasons); see my comments at Template talk:WikiProject Jazz#Infobox requests. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 22:14, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Automated process for article tagging and/or assessing

I would like to submit a request to have DodoBot tag and/or automatically assess articles for our WikiProject, as explained here. Feel free to raise any questions or concerns regarding this suggestion. I will assume there is consensus for the task if there are no objections in a week. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 19:32, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

  • Sounds fine. So, big question from looking at the documentation: jazz - liberal or conservative?! AllyD (talk) 21:26, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
  • Last time I am pretty sure we ended up with either default or liberal. I'm OK with liberal, personally (since these assessments are categorized for later human review, anyway). -- Gyrofrog (talk) 22:11, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

I've left a request at User talk:DodoBot/Requests. I specified "Liberal" inheritance–when we did this in 2010, an issue arose with some articles and the 'bot effectively switched to "Liberal" in order to handle it. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 21:25, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

I have since left a request for User:MuZebot to complete this task. DodoBot does not seem to be very active, which I did not notice when I filed the original request. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 06:05, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
Well, I've since noticed that MuzeMike had left a message about being on administrative hiatus, so I've made a new request at Wikipedia:Bot requests. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 15:36, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Should there be a goal of uniform inclusion (or exclusion) of discographies in album pages?

Some jazz artists (e.g. John Coltrane, Bill Evans) have a discography (with links) at the bottom of every page about one of their albums. Others (e.g. Louis Armstrong) do not. Should their be a goal of uniformity here? Should this goal also extend to other artists creating in album-oriented areas of music like rock, pop, country, R&B, etc...? (The Rolling Stones album pages I have checked out do not have this, for instance...) I like the practice, and would support a goal of extending it to all posts on albums in these areas. It appears to have been done via a template in the cases of Evans and Coltrane. MorphismOfDoom (talk) 22:34, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

Someone please create Wikipedia:WikiProject Jazz/Assessment

The fact that it did not exist until recently ... only to be created with material that makes it qualify for speedy deletion for criterion G1 ... doesn't make any sense. This article is linked in over 23,000 articles on the English Wikipedia. Steel1943 (talk) 04:19, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Standard for Jazz discographies

I believe that the entire "standard" for jazz discographies on wikipedia has to be updated. Here is an example of the standard for sideman appearances, alphabetically by artists last name:

With Hamiet Bluiett

Billy Hart and others only partially maintain this standard, having a long "others" section included as well. Alphabetization is also usually ignored.

Elvin Jones I believe has the best standard for jazz discographies, both leader and sideman sections are sortable tables with year, label, personnel, album title.

Re-doing all the jazz discographies would be extensive, but worthwhile - what do you all think?

Cosprings (talk) 16:59, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

I'm keen on the EJ model; the same is used for Eddie Costa. It provides everything that's in the BH one, but in a more useful format. The question becomes, what to do with notes? The EJ one has some LP numbers in the label column, one note in the album column and a few citations in the year column. In these cases, all could be removed, perhaps, but other cases might need notes... just use the numbering system for notes that puts them in a separate section at the end?
EddieHugh (talk) 19:20, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

I think notes/references can be included in the table where needed. Sideman table would have columns for artist, album, year and label. Leader table would have album, year, label, personnelCosprings (talk) 02:08, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

The notes idea is fine. Personnel is trickier... I was looking at Elvin Jones' sideman discog for my earlier comments; how many sidemen would be included (e.g. a whole orchestra)? What about special guests? The main drawback of having personnel is that it would put people off contributing, as getting the full info is often very difficult; it could also lead to tables with lots of gaps. EddieHugh (talk) 00:33, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

For EJ discography: I think a fifth sortable column should be added for year of release. I know that jazz scholars operate by year of recording session(s); but the rest of the music world compiles discographies according to year of release. The appearance of both columns would satisfy both camps, as well as make the discography more comprehensible to people who do not generally follow jazz culture. What do you think? Also, if jazz discographies in Wikipedia are compiled using a different standard than other types of music discographies, those differences should be noted in Wikipedia:WikiProject_Discographies. Please advise, as I am currently revising the John Coltrane discography and can use some guidance.Infamous30 (talk) 18:43, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Year of release is not simple: released where, in which format, etc.? Having column headings 'Year recorded', 'Title', 'Label', 'Notes' (or 'Personnel / Notes') for leader table; 'Year recorded', 'Leader', 'Title', 'Label', possibly 'Notes' for sideman table would be best, and avoid the problem of possible misunderstanding over dates.
Incidentally, the Elvin Jones sideman table has a problem: the leader column is not sortable properly, as it is done by first name, not surname.
Is there a bot that could convert the list style to a table format? EddieHugh (talk) 01:32, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
There's a template for that: {{sortname}}. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 16:11, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
I use that template; just pointing out that the Jones format is not quite the best available in its current form (in case someone was thinking of copying it). EddieHugh (talk) 16:30, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
I disagree with that. There are numerous sources one can use to determine the original release year of an album, if not necessarily the year. As shown throughout Wikipedia, release year is the standard used in all genres of music except for Jazz and Classical. While I understand the reasons why that it is, I think that release year information is relevant. Infamous30 (talk) 10:41, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
I suppose in jazz the idea is that (historically, at least) a studio recording is a snapshot of what people have been playing in clubs for some time, so recording date is of more value to listeners who want to get an idea of an artist's progression over time. Release date doesn't give that info, as labels often held onto tapes for years before releasing them, or used tracks from one session on more than one album, released in different years. The release date would thus be relevant for an analysis of how music critics have written about an artist's (apparent) progression, and a study of critical and commercial standing (important in pop, rock, etc.), but jazz fans (who are likely to be the main readers of bios and associated discogs) are typically more interested in the musicians themselves and their music. EddieHugh (talk) 16:30, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
No reason not to have both (i.e. something like "Recorded on X date, first released in Y"). ♫ Melodia Chaconne ♫ (talk) 17:20, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
While it's true that jazz fans may be the primary readers of bios and discographies; and jazz does not have the same reach as pop music, it does have some general interest to all music fans, and a handful of artists such as John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, et cetera have a substantial following in the pop market. Besides, as ♫ Melodia Chaconne ♫ states, there's not any reason to have both session dates and release dates. This is why the sortable column used in the Elvin Jones discography is so helpful. The discography for Coltrane that I created uses both, and I will post the link here when it is complete. Per your advice, I will incorporate {{sortname}} as well. Infamous30 (talk) 22:32, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
Another note on release dates -- hopefully this will encourage people to stop relying so much on Allmusic reviews. Allmusic tends to designate all recordings from leading 50s and 60s artists like the aforementioned Coltrane, Davis, etc. as "five-star" classics, while contemporaneous reviews from that era published in outlets like Down Beat and the New Yorker have a much more nuanced and complex perspective on jazz musicians' body of work. Infamous30 (talk) 22:32, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

Ray Charles and Newborn, and Newborn

Allmusic credits Phineas Newborn, Jr. for playing piano at Ray Charles at Newport [1]. That's a mistake, right? The Calvin Newborn article also claims he collaborated with RC, did he? trespassers william (talk) 01:54, 10 March 2013 (UTC)

AllMusic credits are unreliable; it's almost certainly a mistake. Lots of sources say CN worked with RC, but I haven't found an original source; this may be difficult, as it appears to have been in the mid-1950s and they (probably) didn't record together. EddieHugh (talk) 11:35, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
Having said that... this site has PN sitting in on piano for one track and this page at the same site has CN with RC in 1983. The info is out there somewhere... It's probably best to post your Q on the RC, PN and CN pages, rather than here. EddieHugh (talk) 11:50, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
Thank you. I landed on the site sometime this week but didn't realize how extremely informative it is. Why find a original source for WP, especially when verifying a quick mention? I don't think PN's tight bio will benefit from the mention, tough he has another date, but CN can be reffed.
Now generally, why is Allmusic unreliable? Don't they transcribe cd notes like anyone else could? They are probably the most used source in music articles, is that a problem?
And regarding where to ask, I gave a post on RC talk a full day before copying here, and there is still no result. The others are alleys to his avenue. It reinforces my belief that the way WP scatters its discussions really harms the flow of information and collaboration, and that wikiprojects should be used much more for consultations. trespassers william (talk) 11:30, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
No original needed in this case, I would say; but if you really wanted to find out if they did play together, then an original source would be needed. PN's page is brief; try finding a way to put it in... maybe by mentioning PN at Newport that year?
AllMusic credits are sometimes blank, sometimes have just the session leader, sometimes include writers but not musicians, etc.
Where to post is tricky; I take this page to be mainly for managing the mission to improve jazz pages, but it is used by some to ask specific questions about a particular topic. Info is very scattered, but including all in one place might put people off using it, as finding what is relevant for one person would be hard. Follow consensus, I suppose, as that fits what most are doing. EddieHugh (talk) 16:06, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

a notability issue

is happening about a particularly jazzy (New Orleans style) version of a song used in a movie sound track at Talk:St. James Infirmary Blues - at the bottom of the talk page. A few more opinions, one way or another, might prevent an edit war. So... come one down. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 16:09, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

Just a humble correction of the title in question: it is just "St. James Infirmary", not "St. James Infirmary Blues". The circumstance that some may enjoy arguing whether it is a blues or not (well, in formal terms it is not while in musical terms it is) does not make any difference. By the way, this tune is a jazz tune and has always belonged to standard jazz repertoire. So, if played properly, it has got to be "jazzy" all right; if it is not, it is wrong. Besides, the title refers to the St. James's Hospital in London, opposite Hyde Park on the Belgravia side. It's no longer there as such, though, having been converted into a posh 5 star hotel during the '90s. Jazz fiddle

Dear Jazz enthusiasts: I am working on organizing a page called "List of fiddlers". Quite a few musicians have been added to the list with the genre marked as jazz. I have been reading the Jazz violin article, and it does seem that there are some 'fiddling' characteristics involved. Do jazz musicians who play the violin consider themselves "fiddlers"? I know that this is a grey area. Would it be appropriate to create a page called Jazz fiddle and redirect it to Jazz violin? There are a number of names on the List of Fiddlers who are Jazz musicians. Could someone more knowledgeable look them over and see if some of them should be removed and placed on the List of Jazz violinists instead? Thanks, —Anne Delong (talk) 14:06, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

I'm knowledgeable about jazz, not so much about fiddling. But there are many artists on that Jazz list in the List of Fiddlers section that I don't associate with fiddling ... most of them are already on the List of Jazz Violinists, and I do think they should be there, and not in a section in the List of Fiddlers. I guess fiddler and violinist is sort of an arbitrary distinction but one mainly hears of people like Stephane Grappelli, Jean-Luc Ponty, Joe Venuti, Stuff Smith referred to as violinists, except maybe occasionally in the casual way that people occasionally also refer to classical violinists as fiddlers. After a few days, if no objection, I may remove those jazz violinists I'm familiar with from the jazz subsection of the fiddlers list. Note that most of these are not in the main list of fiddlers. MorphismOfDoom (talk) 01:32, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Thank you, that would be helpful. These names have been placed on the list by various different editors. I'm more of a bluegrass and celtic fiddler, and the Jazz names were not familiar to me. —Anne Delong (talk) 08:06, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Although it became common to refer to these instrumentalists as to "violinists" and, in ensemble line-ups, to their instruments as to "violins", both terms are perfectly correct. Perhaps "fiddle" tends to be used rather in colloquial English nowadays. It really is a question for linguists. If anything, "fiddler" may appear a bit archaic but there is no derogatory feel to it (unlike to "fiddle" which has more than one meaning). In my younger years, I used to be a member of Jazz Fiddlers, an octet specialising in performances of original King Oliver and early Fletcher Henderson arrangements (the band still exists, actually). None of us felt awkward being a Jazz Fiddler and, I am sure, nor do the members of today's line-up either. Funny enough, there was and is not one single fiddle in the instrumental line-up of the band. So, in other words, stop worrying and do as you like. More (re-)ratings needed

Given that 8,667 articles are unrated (according to the stats), almost as many are rated as stubs, and one of the stated aims is to get more articles to GA / FA status, we need more ratings and re-ratings, so that we know where things currently stand. As examples, is Elvin Jones really just a start; Art Farmer a stub? Some advice on how to rate / re-rate, and how to get people involved, would be appreciated. EddieHugh (talk) 00:46, 10 March 2013 (UTC)

I think the high(er) number might be attributable to the fact that about two months ago, User:Yobot (at my request) tagged a bunch of talk pages for WP:JAZZ. Upon spot-checking a few of these (not what I'd call a representative sample, but still...) it would appear that adding the project banner was problematic: not inheriting the class= settings, not placing it within an existing banner shell, etc. So some (many? most?) of these new additions may appear in the unassessed bucket. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 16:53, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
P.S. I went back to WP:BOTREQ and added a new section about this. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 20:30, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I've gone through all of the articles classed as C or above, and given all of them importance ratings. I've done the same for selected Start, Stub and Unassessed ones, too. This manual way of doing it is preferable to inheriting, but there are too many for even a few people to deal with.
What does anyone think of changing the very old (and probably ignored) Requests and to-do section of the Project page to a list of articles classed as Top or High priority? EddieHugh (talk) 15:14, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
I noticed that you had been busy, nice work! The items in "Articles needing expansion or improvement" probably overlap with the automated cleanup listing (though I, for one, have not been very diligent about checking the latter). So, the link to the listing might be sufficient. "Requested articles" could probably be covered with the link to Wikipedia:Requested articles/music/Jazz; perhaps the other links in that subsection could be moved to that page. Under "Portal to-do", the item about "Find and add references to Unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) tagged by Template:WikiProject Jazz" should (and is) already be covered by the automated cleanup listing. That's a few suggestions for paring down that section – presumably, you want to add Top and High Priority so that contributors will concentrate their efforts on (for example) expanding the stubs among those articles? (I see that the cleanup listing includes the |importance= rating, but I don't see any convenient grouping by rating and/or class.) Just now I removed the red link to the old cleanup listing (formerly maintained by User:WolterBot). -- Gyrofrog (talk) 16:01, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. All of those things turned out to be on the same page, so I just added a link to it. Maybe I'll look through it at some point to update it. The cleanup is horrifying, once it has loaded – far too much to take on. As you surmised, I was thinking of listing Top and High ones to concentrate on, but people can find them from the assessment table anyway. Instead, I'm now thinking of suggesting an 'Article of the month' and/or 'Album article of the month' to coordinate efforts, to get some more to GA/FA (especially as very few of those listed as GA/FA have very little to do with jazz)... WP:JAZZ banner, take 3

Back in January I asked for a 'bot to go through and tag jazz-related pages with {{WikiProject Jazz}}, if they did not already have it, and/or auto-assess pages that lacked a class= assessment (see talk archive). The 'bot had some problems, which were corrected, but the auto-assessment was never completed. I asked for the auto-assessment again in March (again, see talk archive). Someone looked into it, but it looks like that person is now inactive and it still hasn't been done. So, FYI, I have asked again at WP:BOTREQ for someone to essentially repeat what Xenobot Mk V did for us in 2010. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 17:16, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

I've done quite a few manually, but that's impossible to keep up. Any idea of what number / proportion might be left with no class after inherit and stub if <2,500 bytes criteria have been applied? Would it be better to have a length criterion for Start class as well, or is that too crude a measure of quality? EddieHugh (talk) 17:32, 6 September 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, the idea with the 'bot is to avoid having to do that kind of tedious work (thanks for doing it, though, all the same). No idea, regarding the remaining number after Stubs are tagged. I think it would be hard to quantify Start class. The 2500 bytes was based on Xeno's input, but I can easily imagine an album article having only one sentence of prose, yet still meeting or exceeding that threshold by including (for example) an infobox, a track listing, and a personnel listing. On the other hand, anything less than 2500 bytes can be more safely assumed to be a stub article. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 19:21, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

WikiProject tagging

I started tagging and things are much better than last attempt. So far, I bypassed all redirects, fixed a lot of duplicate song/songs parameters, tagged categories themselves for the project, moved the banner inside WikiProjectBannerShell where needed, assessed about 4,000 pages in Stub and Start class.

Since, I don't want to run through many thousands of pages in 100+ categories and do double-checks, I would like someone to make a list of pages that have no talk page and/or don't have WikiProject Jazz banner and give it to me. Any help on that? -- Magioladitis (talk) 12:54, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

I'd be happy to help, but I'm not sure how to do that. I'm a little familiar with using the API, but I don't know if that would be useful for this. I haven't used it, but would AWB work? Thanks for your help, so far things look fine. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 14:48, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

I went a bit further but I still have not checked for pages with stub template in mainspace or pages with small size. Is anyone else willing to continue this task? -- Magioladitis (talk) 00:54, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

I assumed this was something better suited for a 'bot (if only because Xenobot V had handled it the first time). I'm willing to do it if there's some method that doesn't involve manually finding and editing these pages. Thanks, -- Gyrofrog (talk) 16:50, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

Unreferenced BLP listings

DASHBot (talk · contribs) used to create, and/or periodically update, a list of unreferenced biographies of living persons for a given Wikiproject (see User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects). The WP:JAZZ list is located at Wikipedia:WikiProject Jazz/Unreferenced BLPs. However, that bot has been blocked since March, so this listing is out-of-date. I had asked for a 'bot to take over this task, but someone reminded me that this is already part of the cleanup listing that svick generates weekly on the toolserver. (See discussion.) I don't guess it would hurt to have a 'bot take over this function on Wikipedia from DASHBot, but do we really need to maintain the listing in two places? -- Gyrofrog (talk) 15:51, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

I have gone through and converted the list of references, along with relevant external links, to inline citations. I suppose I could just go ahead and move this to article space, but I didn't want to mess up any AfC process(es). -- Gyrofrog (talk) 19:15, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
Thank you very much! It's now at Southern Crossing (film). Arthur goes shopping (talk) 09:34, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

Deanna Kirk

Hi folks, I was hoping I could get some jazz fans over at Deanna Kirk. It was in pretty bad shape for quite a while, mostly from plagiarized content lifted from her website. I don't know anything about jazz, or whether or not the subject is notable (she has four albums, so I'm guessing so) but I trimmed it down the best I could. If any of you want to get your jazz hands dirty, go nuts! :D Cyphoidbomb (talk) 21:57, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

Requesting pending changes protection for Jazz

On Talk:Jazz, I've suggested requesting pending changes protection for the jazz article, to protect it from vandalism. Please add any comments there. EddieHugh (talk) 09:49, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
