Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. City economy size and rank claims - a consensual approach

The city articles and their Economy of ... articles such as Bangalore/Economy, Chennai/Economy, Delhi, Kolkata/Economy, Mumbai/Economy typically qualify their GDP figures with eg city X is ranked fourth in India by overall GDP. Bare GDP figures are pretty meaningless to the average reader, so such descriptive context is useful.

However, ranking the cities is also contentious, and subject to edit-warring. The article List of cities by GDP collects together recent GDP estimates by various respectable sources. This list shows clearly that different sources produce widely differing figures, often resulting in different rankings.

A case in point: the Economy of Chennai currently claims Chennai is fourth-most productive metro area of India, relying on the Brookings 2014 GDP estimates. Editor Vibhss (talk · contribs) argues that PWC seems to be more credible than Brookings (here) and prefers the 2008 PWC stats - putting Chennai 6th in India (eg this edit).

Rather than argue each case on its merits I would propose in general to write a description covering the range of expert opinions. So for example: 'Chennai's economy has recently been ranked between 4th and 6th in India' , quoting all relevant sources. Likewise the Mumbai and Delhi articles could now say something like 'Mumbai's metro area economy is estimated to be either the largest or second-largest in India' .

Could this satisfy most editors?

@Batternut: Firstly, thanks for starting this discussion here. I would like to correct you a little. PwC's list mentions Chennai's GDP as 5th largest among Indian cities and not 6th. I made that edit of Chennai being 6th largest economy taking a Yahoo! Finance article as source in which some cities' GDP has been mentioned as per PwC and others' different from that mentioned in PwC. Later I came across PwC figures which place Chennai 5th and Bangalore 4th. Well Kolkata is ranked 3rd and Hyderabad 6th by both sources (PwC and Brookings) and their rankings are not disputed but their GDP figures are indeed disputed. Rankings as well as GDP figures fluctuate for pairs Mumbai-Delhi (1st or 2nd) and Bangalore-Chennai (4th or 5th).

I completely agree with your neutral approach statements regarding Delhi and Mumbai. City GDP of Mumbai is highest but it's metropolitan GDP may be second highest after Delhi as per Oxford Economics estimates. Vibhss (talk) 11:05, 25 February 2017 (UTC)

@Anandmoorti: Welcome to this discussion. I have already seen the article List of cities by GDP. I know it mentions GDP figures of cities based on different sources, i.e. PPP figures as per PwC and Brookings and nominal GDP figures as per McKinsey. Vibhss (talk) 11:05, 25 February 2017 (UTC)

My suggestion is whatever source you guys take ensure that its same for all the city article. Rather than taking different source for different cities. Better avoid PWC as its too old. Brooking or Mckinsey would be ok.--Anandmoorti (talk) 14:06, 25 February 2017 (UTC)

@Anandmoorti: It's not possible to use same source for all cities. McKinsey can't be used as source for sole GDP figures in any article since they are nominal GDP figures. And economic performance of a city/ country can be better assessed and interpreted by PPP GDP figures because PPP is based on current international dollar while nominal GDP is based on US$. Hence they differ by very large extent (for Chennai, PwC estimate in PPP:66BN dollar for 2008 and McKinsey estimate in nominal GDP:17BN dollar for 2010) Besides most recent report of Oxford Economics ranked Delhi ($370BN GDP) and Mumbai ($370BN GDP) 30th and 31st respectively among 50 largest cities in the world by GDP. There are plenty of reliable news articles proving that fact even though direct source of Oxford Economics is not openly available at present. The confusion is resolved for Delhi and Mumbai. Since only Delhi and Mumbai feature in that top 50 list, other city articles will have to rely on PwC and Brookings as source for GDP (not McKinsey as it mentions nominal figures). Although I have repeatedly highlighted that Brookings figures are strangely lower than PwC figures for all Indian cities except Delhi, I agree with the neutral approach methodology of Batternut (talk · contribs). It is better to mention "range of GDP" as per PwC and Brookings (again, not McKinsey) and the ranking(s) according to that range for cities except Delhi and Mumbai. And just because PwC figures are "older" than Brookings, it doesn't mean they have lost their credibility. They will lose it when PwC update their own fresh figures. Till then, the old figures are 100% credible. And article List of cities by GDP still mentions PwC's "old" figures along with newer figures despite "newer" figures by Brookings got released. @Vibhss: Anandmoorti recently made this edit to Bangalore, removing the Yahoo figure as unacceptable and citing your above contributions in this talk. Is it indeed your view, Vibhss, that Yahoo! Finance is indeed unreliable or otherwise unacceptable? (NB Although working last week, the Yahoo India’s top 15 cities .. page seems broken now, but has been archived here and figures listed here). @Batternut: As I had told you earlier that Yahoo! Finance mentions figures for some Indian cities as per 2008 PwC estimate (Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai) but different figures for Kolkata, Bangalore and Hyderabad (much greater than PwC figures) and that too in same list. As we are talking about these six cities only, I am not sure whether this makes this source unreliable or not. Vibhss (talk) 01:51, 4 March 2017 (UTC)

I have removed those GDP data from the city articles because the sources are unofficial and moreover they are old. If you look other city articles such as New York City, London, Beijing or Berlin all of them provided GDP data from their official website rather than third party source. Whereas Indian city articles provided with three different source with three different gdp data; therefore its same omit city gdp data till we get official data.--Amrita62 (talk) 06:20, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
