Articles for the Wikipedia 1.0 project

Hi, I'm a member of the Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team, which is looking to identify quality articles in Wikipedia for future publication on CD or paper. We recently began assessing using these criteria, and we are looking for A-class, B-class, and Good articles, with no POV or copyright problems. Can you recommend any suitable articles? Please post your suggestions here. Thanks a lot! Gflores Talk 17:40, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Racehorse categories

User:Galopin has recently been creating two new Racehorse categories (bred and trained) for each country. One of these categories, Category:Racehorses bred in the United States, was the subject of a deletion discussion:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categories_for_deletion/Log/2006_June_22

I am sure there are many horse racing contributors who may be unaware of this discussion, and would have a view about what categories are relevant for racehorses. I would appreciate your comments. - Cuddy Wifter 05:44, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

  • The problem with the title "American racehorses" is that it attaches a nationality to racehorses without specifying whether it is by breeding or training. There are several European trained horses in the list which seem completely out of place (Lammtarra, Sadler's Wells, Peintre Celebre etc.) - to describe them as "American racehorses" on the basis of where they were bred is misleading, and the categories "Racehorses bred in the United States" and "Racehorses trained in the United States" solve this. - Zafonic 10:31, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
    • I agree with Mr. Zafonic's idea. --Galopin 06:14, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
  • Sorry, I wasn't aware of this discussion when I created addional categories (Italian racehorses, Canadian racehorses, French racehorses, United Kingdom racehorses). I think the "bred in U.S." etc is a good idea (we show where humans are born even if they become a citizen elsewhere) but then the Category:French racehorses and others I created seems to me to make "Trained in France" and the like redundant. -- Handicapper 15:14, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
  • An alternative solution to this would be to add a suffix to each racehorse's name to indicate the country in which they were foaled - for example "Sadler's Wells (USA)", "Dubai Millennium (GB)", "Montjeu (IRE)" - a common practice in the listing of racehorses. There would then only be the need for a category indicating the country in which the horses were trained. - Zafonic 18:02, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
  • Why not go with the commonly accepted worldwide practice when listing horses as suggested by Zafonic. (GB) (AUS) (US) (FR) (CAN) etc. I think both the breeding and training of a horse are quite important however the categorisation here can become redundant. If a US bred horse that is owned by Irish intrests and races its whole life in England British or US (or even Irish)?? Does it matter? By using Dubai Millennium (GB) the horse is then forever linked to the British breeding industry, you could have a category for that, however i would not think that this should come at the exception of this horse appearing in other categories. eg - where the category of Australian racehorses was deleted from Tulloch and categorised as Australian Trained Racehorses & New Zealand Bred racehorses. dark horse 02:01, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
  • further to that, i think that there should be a portal for horseracing (specifically thoroughbred horse racing) from there it can be further defined with reference to breeding, racing by countries etc. Some articles are very american specific, others british and many australian. The whole horseracing theme could be much better categorised, linked and therefore navigated. I like Galopins idea

dark horse 05:01, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

  • There should be two categories (place bred and place trained). I don't think this format will be redundant (although we should get rid of "Australian racehorses" and similar categories for being too vague). I think there will be users who will want to use both categories for searching, specifically if they are interested in the breeding industry of a particular country, and using the suffix alone does not provide them with a way to navigate by "place bred". Additionally, I wonder if there will be any users who will be confused by the meaning of the suffix without some explanation ( I know we can't dumb it down for everyone, just bringing up a point). Eventer
  • If two categories are to be used (place bred and place trained) what ocurs if a horse has multiple trainers and they are in different countries? (dark horse 03:25, 5 July 2006 (UTC))
    • I think, The article like Exceller should have three categories (bred in the United States and trained in France, trained in the United States).--Galopin 16:42, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
    • I think, The article like Exceller should have three categories (American bred racehorses and France trained racehorses, American trained racehorses).--Galopin 11:19, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
  • On reflection I think that the "suffix" idea would confuse some readers and I'm returning to the original proposal for "trained" and "bred" categories. One slight change I would make is to the titles -
For "Racehorses trained in the United States", I'd prefer "American trained racehorses", and for "Racehorses bred in the United Kingdom", read "British bred racehorses" etc.
The advantages of this are: 1) the titles are shorter, 2) they don't all begin with "R", 3) the similarity of the titles to "American racehorses" etc will lead to less controversy if those titles are deleted (which they should be for this to work).
It's interesting to note that the suffixes refer to "GB" rather than "UK", so I think we should use "British" and not "United Kingdom". As for horses which have been trained in different countries (such as Jeune, for example), simply put them into more than one "trained" category (in Jeune's case "British trained racehorses" and "Australian trained racehorses"). - Zafonic 21:55, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
It is standard practice within the racing industry itself to refer to a horse's nationality as where it was bred. You see this in racecards in Britain where so many horses are from Ireland. In certain British races there is extra prize money if the horse is bred in Britain - this is an effort to encourage people to send their mares to sires in Britain or to buy horses that have been bred in Britain. --Wikipediatastic 15:35, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject

As a couple of people have indicated, I think it may be time to develop a WikiProject on Thoroughbred racing. Dark horse has written to me as follows:

I think that it would be a good idea to support a wikiproject on thoroughbred horse racing as suggested by Galopin. considering the size and limited contributors possibly separate projects for Europe, US and AUS. These could then be merged once more complete. There is Wikipedia:WikiProject Thoroughbred racing which has had next to nothing done to it and seems USA focused. You may have seen me working through the G1 winners in Australia (slowly) my idea is to complete the winners of all blacktype races and then complete profiles for all hall of fame horses (firstly) in the style of the Tulloch article. Added to this i want to develop a standard for summaries, race records etc. i quite like the idea of info boxes like they have for football (soccer) players. A summary including info on basic breeding, colour, year foaled, owner, trainer, race record, prizemoney, major wins, awards, sire stats and a photo would look good. Let me know what you think (dark horse 04:11, 4 July 2006 (UTC))

Rather than create a new horse racing project I see no reason why we can’t transform the existing Wikipedia:WikiProject Thoroughbred racing into a global Wikiproject, much as other listed sports projects. If we are going to create article standards and info boxes, then the more people from differing horse racing backgrounds we can involve in that process, the better. Other global sports projects will be a great source for developing templates, guidelines, style guide, summaries, info boxes, etc. It may be that we can branch into country specific projects at a later date, although it does not appear to have happened in other global sports.

As a starting point for developing the project could I suggest submitting ideas on the following items:

  • Separate country projects?
  • Scope of project
  • List of Categories
  • Templates required
  • Info boxes required
  • Guidelines as to notability for articles
  • Style guides for articles
  • Publicising of project
  • Recruitment of participants

I am transferring this discussion to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Thoroughbred racing where we can further develop ideas and hopefully, recruit more participants to the project. - Cuddy Wifter 04:17, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

  • Great idea - my thoughts on your starting points

Separate country projects? I think that prehaps rather than having seperate projects for each country we should at least have clearly defined areas for each. The main page could have the history of thoroughbred racing, then links to each country / area.

Scope of project I think reults of Group/graded races (with special attention to landmark races), Hall of fame lists , Horse of the Year lists, profiles on famous horses (should be all horse of the years and Hall of fame horses), racecourses, trainers/stables

List of Categories We need to sort out the bred/raced/trained debate. Then categories could be Hall of fame, Horse of the Year, as well as categories for winners of famous races, racecourses of the world, trainers/stables

Templates required Race record - i have one that i used today for Makybe Diva Lists of race winners need to be conformed.

Info boxes required Infoboxes as a summary for each horse

Style guides for articles defenitely needs to be a definition between some articles which contain next to nothing and others that summarize a horses career by season. (dark horse 05:07, 5 July 2006 (UTC))

Infoboxes

I have added a proposed infobox to Wikipedia:List of infoboxes/Proposed. Comments appreciated. You can see it in use at Makybe Diva/Lonhro/Northerly article. (dark horse 03:54, 6 July 2006 (UTC))

It is quite a detailed infobox. --Siva1979Talk to me 06:50, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
How about in "Major Wins" you reverse the columns so that the name of the race (more important) comes before the year of win (less important). What do you think? - Cuddy Wifter 04:02, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
Not a bad idea, will have a look when i have some time (dark horse 10:25, 11 July 2006 (UTC))
designed comlete new infobox template for thoroughbred racing (including revesing columns). much easier to use, see under infoboxes on mainpage. currently implemented at Makybe Diva&Lonhro for an example (dark horse 05:44, 19 July 2006 (UTC))

A starting point?

I was thinking about how we are going to organise this in a systematic way.

Maybe something like this

  • Main page for "thoroughbred racing" or "horse racing"

History of Horseracing / History of the thoroughbred.

  • then links to seperate articles for

Horseracing in Australia / New Zealand Horseracing in Hong Hong Horseracing in Japan Horseracing in US / Canada Horseracing in Europe (maybe split into United Kingdom / France /Others (italy/Germany etc)

  • Under each Area / Locality

History

History of racing in that area, eras, changes etc

Administration / Governing Bodies

How racing is run

Race clubs

Not sure of how this is set up overseas but in australia / NZ the raceclubs are quite important.

Tracks

LIsts of tracks

Group/Grade Races

List of group/grade races with lists of winners/ history of each race etc

Facts & Figures

Facts and Figures about racing in that locality, including betting?

Breeding etc

Much of this is already set up, just not organised well. Categories etc need to be better defined. If you have a look at the category for Horse racing stubs you will see how much information is out there, just really badly set up.

Any thoughts on where to start?(dark horse 01:54, 13 July 2006 (UTC))

Before getting into the details of the project, I think we need to do some preliminary work such as:
  • Set up the project front page, similar to other projects.
  • Provide an area for participants to sign up.
  • Contact people who have been contributors to horse racing articles to make them aware of the project and to put the page on their watch list.
  • Publicise the project by posting messages on each countries appropriate Wikipedean notice boards.
- Cuddy Wifter 07:36, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Frontpage

I have made some changes to better reflect this project, also added an userbox to add to userpages. (dark horse 02:42, 14 July 2006 (UTC))

Bulletin Board

Added this project to the New pages seeking contributors section in the Community bulletin board (dark horse 03:54, 14 July 2006 (UTC))

Templates & Images

added to main page. Have put some templates that can be used (to recruit). Also room for templates etc to be placed. (dark horse 04:52, 14 July 2006 (UTC))

Recruitment

I have started placing the following on the talk pages of users i notice are regular contributors to horse racing articles.

I notice you are a contributor to racehorse articles, if you are interested there is a new project underway on the topic. Have a look at [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Thoroughbred racing]] and feel free to join up, im sure your contributions would be worthwhile!

if others involved want to do similar we might be able to recruit some more participants in the project quicker. (dark horse 04:55, 17 July 2006 (UTC))

I have been doing similar work. Keep an eye out for posts with the heading "Throughbred racing project" - e.g. see User_talk:Sjc#Throughbred_racing_project - Cuddy Wifter 06:18, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Manual of Style for Project

A few things are underway. I think one of the more important things we need to do is develop a Manual of Style of the various kinds of articles that are covered by this project.

For eg.

  • Racehorses (maybe detailed and short although aiming for detailed many people are not going to write in depth articles.) and inc template for race record etc.
  • Trainers
  • Races (inc race winners)
  • Racecourses
  • Racing in each country

prehaps if we set up a sub group for each with a talk page we can look at different styles already demonstrated and work out what the general consensus is? (dark horse 04:58, 20 July 2006 (UTC))

To assist people in looking at different styles, the following are examples of some of the more comprehensive racehorse articles we have at present:
Take a look at them, and let's hear your opinion - Cuddy Wifter 05:40, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

A good selecetion of articles there - most contain good information, some like the Sunline article is badly in need of paragaphs and headings.

With many horses a single season or race is the defining factor in their enduring fame. Whilst I prefer the season by season style adopted in Tulloch / Makybe Diva etc i can see that this may not be wanted nor warranted for all, so if not a season by season analysis there should at least be a background paragraph describing the horses early racing career etc. For eg Barbaro was a Grade 1 winner going into the Kentucky Derby but the article goes from the intro straight to the Kentucky Derby with only a mention of "Undefeated going into the race". Whilst a start by start analysis is probably not needed, a brief summary of successes at whatever level in each season or by age is.

maybe we could look at something like

  • introduction (& infobox)
  • racing career (? by season) - including major highlight/s.
  • Awards / honours
  • Retirement notes if horse went to stud etc.
  • Trivia
  • Full Race Record.
  • Pedigree
  • Links

Naming convention for racecourses/venues

Currently there is a proposal to merge the articles Rosehill Gardens racecourse and Rosehill Racecourse. Please see my comments at the articles' talk page. But I would like some input from this project -

Is there a naming convention for racecourses?
Is "Rosehill" or "Rosehill Gardens" going to cause confusion anywhere else?
Using the general naming convention I am proposing either, Rosehill Gardens racecourse remains and Rosehill Racecourse becomes a redirect OR they both become redirects to a new article Rosehill racecourse

ps I'm from Sydney but I'm not involved in horseracing. --Garrie 00:51, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

The Sydney Turf Club web site [1] refer to the venue as Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, so I think that name should be used for the article title.
The naming convention for proper names of specific institutions require capitalisation. Therefore all uses of the word "Racecourse" in conjuction with a specific place should be capitalised as are all UK Racecourses. - Cuddy Wifter 03:25, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Xcellent up for deletion

The New Zealand racehorse Xcellent has been listed for deletion. Some informed comments from thoroughbred enthusiasts would seem to be needed. - Cuddy Wifter 04:33, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

New Category

I made a new Category:European racehorses. This is for Thoroughbred race horses bred anywhere in the world that most generally compete in races at various tracks throughout the European Union. Handicapper 15:12, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Question

If you look at the basis for including Album covers, Video game covers, book covers and several similar such items as acceptable images for placing in Wikipedia articles, then would not post cards be a similar such item? (See: [2]

infobox revamp

As requested, I've revamped the infobox. Here is the new usage:

{{Thoroughbred racehorse infobox
| name =
| image =
| caption =
| sire =
| dam =
| damsire =
| sex =
| foaled =
| country =
| colour =
| breeder =
| owner =
| trainer =
| record =
| prize money =
| honors =
| race =
| year =
| statistics date =
}}

I've updated a few pages with the new syntax. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 03:54, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

I've finished updating all the pages that use the template. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 04:31, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

I think that Handicappers request for assistance may have been slightly misinterpreted. The change has done away with the Major Wins heading and the race details that follow. I think that Handicapper was looking for an additional heading of "Honours" to be added above/below the Major wins section? Is there something wrong with the format though? I see that the "Major wins" heading and the race details now do not appear (alothough they are in the template? Minor error? im not sure, i had a go at fixing but could not. (dark horse 06:42, 30 August 2006 (UTC))

I played around with the Infobox and it seems to have the layout we wanted however the spacing problem is back as you can see at Slew O'Gold. I've asked CyberSkull to take another look and also to perhaps widen the entire box a bit. -- Handicapper 16:38, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

I don't see any width problem with the width. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 07:14, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Is there a standard for which major wins are included in the infobox? There are many races that once were important but are no longer run or are now much less important. For Tulloch Fisher Plate, VRC St Leger, AJC St Leger could all be in the infobox and for Phar Lap Craven Plate, VRC St Leger, AJC St Leger, Kings Plate, AJC Plate, Spring Stks, Randwick Stks, Fisher Plate, Cumberland Stks. These races would all be likely to have been at least Group 2 if not Group 1. The longer ago a horse raced the more of an issue this is, for example Carbine.--Andrew Chapman 1975 12:49, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Manual of Style

I am suggesting that we adopt this infobox set up, as well as the chart set up for race records which occurs in the article about Barbaro. I also believe that a standard should be set for articles on racecourses. That standard is the one used for the article on Saratoga Race Course and the Del Mar Racetrack. I also proposed a while ago, and this was deleted from the to-do list that we set a goal of making articles on all Grade/Group 1 races in the world and also for other important Group 2 and 3 races such as the UAE Derby and the CashCall Mile. As you may know, articles are established for all American racetracks with a graded race, Category:Horse racing venues in the United States and for all Grade 1 and Grade 2 races. I also want to emphasize that the project needs to stand up for itself about the repeated labeling of articles as stubs. Furthermore, the Breeders' Cup is coming up on the 4th of November and I believe that a major push should be made so that the contenders for the Breeders' Cup all have articles as do major prep races. I intend to put this on the to-do list. Although the Cup has never been run outside of North America, it attracts the best standard of European and South American horses, last year including Ouija Board, Ad Valorem, Shirocco, Intercontinental, Hurricane Run, Oratorio, Starcraft, Ace, Bago, Azamour, Gorella, Host, Valixir, Angara, Megahertz, Sundrop, Luas Line and Mona Lisa. It is an international event and deserves some work. Also breeding operations centered in Central Kentucky deserve more work including articles on sales, farms and prominent breeders and owners.

--Loucards 21:40, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

When you say "I am suggesting that we adopt this infobox set up" are you referring to an infobox in Barbaro? He does not appear to have an infobox like the type discussed above or related to his overall statistics present? I do like your suggestion for an adoption of an infobox closer to the NBA player infobox. I think the size of the font and the centering is much better. Also i dont like the racing career contained in Barbaro table as it does not contain information such as time, weight or who the jockey was. (dark horse 22:07, 1 September 2006 (UTC))

I too think the NBA players infobox would be good if someone wants to do it. Handicapper 19:09, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

New Page

I also think the page is difficult to read and should be moved to the set up used for College basketball and other projects.

--Loucards 21:40, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Split

I have started a new page to focus specifically on American horse racing and I think that other countries ought to follow suit. Also, I encourage Americans who are members of this page to join the new project WikiProject_American_thoroughbred_racing.

--Loucards 12:54, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

I think it important to coordinate for consistency as every year THR is becoming more and more integrated worldwide through both racing and in particular through breeding operations. Handicapper 21:18, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Loucards, one of the purposes for starting this project was to co-ordinate racing pages worldwide, to provide consistency etc. Spliting works against the very principles that the project was established on, but hey! (dark horse 05:53, 4 September 2006 (UTC))

Infobox templates

Galopin has generously volunteered to help and has done a great job. Take a look at his talk page (User talk:Galopin#Template tests) for the two choices for the bottom box and those horses where I set up their box today using sample 1. Handicapper 17:23, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Definetely like this infobox over the past editions (dark horse 01:20, 14 September 2006 (UTC))

Hi

Hi, I'm relatively new to this, so I'm not even sure I've gone the right way about contributing. The page should contain a history of breeding and racing in each of the sport's main jurisdictions, ie and in no particular order: Ireland, Britain, the US, Australia, Japan, France, Italy, Germany and any others that people think are worth including. I've used the above countries as they are the ones with the longest traditions in the sport. The main races in flat and national hunt in all countries should be included where relevant. There needs to be a limit on the horses mentioned for obvious reasons. This should take the big historical names in each code, for example, Eclipse, Nijinsky and Northern Dancer would be obvious flat horses, while Arkle, Golden Miller, Cottage Rake, Best Mate and Istabraq would be musts for national hunt racing. (The fact that all five were Irish breds is not a function of my national prejudice). From here on, flat horses' inclusion should be based on international classifications, limited to the top 10 or 20, with some exceptions based on merit. So, for example, 2005 would have included Hurricane Run and Heart's Cry as they were in the top 10, but should also have included the English horse, Sergeant Cecil, who did not run in group races but distinguished himself by taking the three main staying in England handicaps that year, the first in history to do so. The starting point for deciding what jumps horses are included should be each year's Cheltenham, Aintree and Punchestown festivals, the championship races run in France and the winner of that year's Velka Pardubica in the Czech Republic. This is because Ireland, Britain and France are the main jumps jurisdictions, while the Czech race is regarded as one of the toughest tests of a national hunt horse. (I'd be happy to contribute to the Irish pages, either flat or national hunt). - User:Floridapearl

Thoughts (state by state, injections and life after racing?)

I am new to wiki. I know this wiki article is supposed to be global in nature. However I have noticed differences in TB racing (stakes $) and breeding (endurance v. speed) between different US states (ie, TX bred for speed, where KY more for endurance). These are just my amateur observations. I would suggest if there is interest breaking down per state the anamolies to the state such as the 2 I mentioned. Someone who has been doing this longer probably has more examples of anamolies.

Another thought is to comment on the life of a racehorse after racing. I own a retired TB broodmare (just 1). She is one of the ones injured - retired after her 2nd race. She placed 2nd in her first 2 races. Fast mare. But.... Mr. Prospector babies are pretty much speed only (stick legs, I have heard some say). What happens to the horses after racing? Stallions live a long and happy life if they come from a desired bloodline. Mares become broodmares, the market (auctions) is flooded with TB foals (fast but not necessarily endurance runners). Poor geldings! Might go for $250 at an auction. Can't produce babies - if they are trained properly, maybe polo? maybe hunter/jumper? Unfortunately they tend to be unwanted. There are 2 horse meat packing plants in TX and I hate to say it but they are meeting a demand (albeit foreign) and retired TB's can and do end up there.

So for those considering breeding TBs - think hard because it is not that profitable (in TX anyway) and you may actually be breeding for the horse processing plant not the racetrack.

unscientific general review of TB racehorse's life:
year 0-2.5 - they grow up
2.5 - enter training
3.0 - first race, if trainer/owner serious, maybe 1 race x month, max 10 races year (horse gets a couple of breaks)
from 3 -5 - might race the entire time if not injured
5+ - probably retired from track --then what? depends on the horse and demand of what that horse can provide, what need it can meet....

a horse's life span is 25-30 yr so that is a long time to be a pasture ornament if not breeding, polo or being used in other healthy & fun (for the horse) ways.

last suggestion & thought: drugs - it happens. trainers mix cocktails and shoot a horse up prior to a race. If this has not already been mentioned -- I think it should be touched on. I have never raced a horse personally but I know many who have and some shoot the horse up... others are dead set against it....

These are a few thoughts that came to mind -- thanks for writing a wiki article on TB horseracing...good day. tejas_ruthie (edited to add my wiki login ID if anyone wants to email me)

Note: - Ruthie, see Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, there are others listed at the bottom of that article, and quite a few more that don't have pages yet. I'll see what I can pull together for CANTER and ReRun. You might want to look into a Texas group called LOPE, which started as CANTER but expanded to all breeds. Jrstark 02:10, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

New articles

Hi horse geeks. I've just translated the article Elitloppet, a Swedish horse race, from fr:Elitloppet and sv:Elitloppet. I couldn't see any sort of style guideline for horse races, so just did a vulgar copy of the outline from the other language Wikipedias. BTW, I'm no expert, but it seems that European Grand Circuit, or maybe Grand Circuit Européen as it seems to be known internationally, should be written. --Dangherous 11:42, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

I have also just started the article BHB Champion Jockey Award, there is lots more that could be done to improve this article - like adding more of the champions in, the number of winners that they rode. I'm also not sure if the BHB Champion Jockey Award is the name for both flat and jumping awards. If it is we should add the names of jump jockeys who have won this in the past. Please help with this one too. --Wikipediatastic 16:28, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

I did the article on Arazi based on written accounts, having not seen the race live or on TV. While doing the article for Bertrando I found a video of this race. This is truly an astonishing performance if anyone wants to look at it. Handicapper 16:59, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Tony McCoy / A. P. McCoy

The page for the jockey currently entitled A. P. McCoy was recently moved from "Tony McCoy". I'm not so sure this was a good move. If you're interested, please could you register a vote at Talk:A. P. McCoy as to which title you prefer - "Tony McCoy" or "A. P. McCoy". The vote closes at 12pm GMT on January 1st 2007. Thanks -- Zafonic 20:41, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 19:32, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
