Requested articles

Among the requested articles are House II, II (The Horror Show), and IV. With horror film series, should the article for the first title in the series be expanded so that the article becomes about the whole series, and then the individual titles spun out if it grows too large? Or should they be individual articles for individual movies from the start? Also, looking through the horror movie category, a variety of names are used for articles on series. There's X series, X film series, X (series), and X (film series). Should a uniform classification be used? Шизомби 19:58, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

There are uniform ways of naming film-related articles; see Wikipedia:Naming conventions (films). That doesn't cover your question about film series, though. I've asked your question on that talk page; I'll let you know if I get any replies. --Myles Long 23:36, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Incidentally, two of the longest-running horror series aren't on WP: Witchcraft (film) (thirteen movies) and Troublesome Night (nineteen movies). I've seen all but the 13th of the former but none of the latter. Шизомби 02:48, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

A question for horror afficionados

I asked this question at WP:RD/H yesterday but it occurred to me that editors here would be more likely to know the answer. I was editing Rats and needed to refer to James Herbert's novels about mutant rats. Is there a particular label for the premise of a piece of horror fiction like those rats? Some horror stories have obvious "villains" (e.g. Dracula). In other horror stories (particularly psychological horror) the scary thing (or things) are not in any sense a person - e.g. the dark water in Dark Water (just going on the trailer, I haven't seen this film) and the rats in Herbert - so it seems stramge to call it (or them) "the villain(s)". I am looking for a particular term for horror, not just premise, conceit, macguffin, or whatever. Have horror critics coined one? Stroika 11:07, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Featured articles

Is there a general strategy for featured articles? Should horror articles that are very good be identified so that can be taken to featured article status, since that may require less work? Or should people just concentrate on the topics they like the most? Or should the highest-profile horror topics be worked on to get to FA status?-(e.g. movies or books that consistently make top ten lists).

Oh, also is there any quick way of determining if there are horror FA on foreign-language WPs?

Identifying good/very good articles and helping to bring them to featured status is probably the best way to go in the short term. See below; this fits right in with the "collaboration of the week/month." Of course, high-profile horror works should also be concentrated. I'd hope that the higher-profile stuff is actually better quality already, but I know that isn't always the case. So basically, my vote is that we should really do both. As for searching foreign language WPs, I'm not sure if there's a quick way to do that. That would be really cool, though. --Myles Long 23:29, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

"Improvement of the week/month"

What do you think about having an "improvement of the week/month candidate"? Over at Wikipedia:Spanish Translation of the Week they decide on one article in a concenus process; people nominate different articles for translation, once concensus is achieved, all the participants pile on and in no time a large Spanish language article is translated into English. We could have a similar process for an improvement drive. Come to a concensus on a horror film to be improved and we all work on improving it for a time. Seems to me a good way to get many articles to good/featured status in a collaborative atmosphere. --Fuhghettaboutit 20:05, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Horror - the dab page

Horror is a disambiguation page, so careful when you are linking. Does this WikiProject deal with the emotion, I'm not sure? Anyway, currently Horror fiction covers the the genre. Not sure if there should be a Horror (genre) (which is currently a redirect) - for example if there is a "horror" video game, the link would point to Horror fiction. This project primarily relates to horror fiction and horror film, though as you point out, video games and such definitely relate to horror fiction. The emotion itself is probably outside the scope of this project, except for the fact that it is the reason that the genres are so named. --Myles Long 23:23, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

James Herbert's Books - Could Someone Start Writing Articles for them (A Request)

Hi I'm a horror fan and am wondering if some of the kind editors could write articles for the works of James Herbert. He's quite established in the UK, and is even talked about in 'Danse Macabre', Stephen King's non-fiction book of the horror genre in general. There anyone willing to write them? Horror notable films

We could start a list of 'Missing/Incomplete notable horror films', something like Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/List of notable films. The list should contain horror films which have some kind of reference indicating notability - critical acclaim, top grossing, cult following (e.g. they appear on some '100 best horror movies' type of list) and the tasks would be:

• eliminate red links by creating articles;
• fill in existing articles, making sure they have at least an infobox, an image (if possible) and a short synopsis.

If you like the idea, please propose sources for building a list. One source would be IMDb 50 Top Rated Horror Films. AdamSmithee 19:28, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

That sounds pretty reasonable. The IMDb top horror list is pretty stable, though the worst-rated one has a fairly high turnover rate. Possibly we'd want a workpage within the project space to list them all on, and could have some sort of key to indicate which movies are on which lists (since many will likely be on more than one). The same could possibly be done for novels and short stories. (E.g. Anthology film

Mondo film

My feelings are that exploitation genres only tangentially linked to horror should not be the subject of organized attention from the Horror Project. I understand that mondo movies may induce horror, and there's certainly an overlap in the fanbase, but they probably fall outside the range of Project focus. Chris Stangl 22:17, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Confusion about the series Zombie 2

After asking this on the Zombie 2 talk page without getting an answer, hopefully the general horror project can help. I am very confused about the Zombie 2 series from its article and from IMDb. Could someone please clarify this for me? The following is the order of the Zombie 2 series films with the alternate titles from IMDb. One list in the article gives only 3 in the series, another gives 4, and yet others give 5. Which is right, or are they all right, and IMDb missed a film?

I'm not sure what you're asking. None of the series are actually real, they're just AKAs that distributors gave them to make them appear like a series. According to IMDb, there's two movies called Zombie 2, five movies called Zombie 3, three movies called Zombie 4, three movies called Zombie 5, and one movie called Zombie 6. Are your questions relating to the so-called Italian, British, and/or American series? I'm fairly sure none of them are really official. In a real series I suppose the makers of the sequels have the legal right to the title and/or characters. There's no continuity of characters with these movies, so the question is whether there's a right the the title I guess, and I'm thinking that was either ignored, or perhaps the title could not be copyrighted so in effect anyone could title their movie Zombie (x) if they wanted to. What would be more useful to find out for the purpose of the article is who specifically gave the movies those names; I think it was the distributor rather than the filmmakers, but am not sure and in either case the specific company or people who named it would be nice to find out. As to what the names of the articles should be, I'm not sure. The naming conventions for films doesn't get into AKAs and how to pick among them for the main title. The general naming conventions states "article naming should give priority to what the majority of English speakers would most easily recognize, with a reasonable minimum of ambiguity, while at the same time making linking to those articles easy and second nature." I think either the title used by the IMDb could be used, or the title of whatever DVD is currently most available in English-speaking regions. Шизомби 14:29, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

I guess that's what it boils down to, although I'm not sure all of them even have zombies! I would guess it's a matter of distributors thinking the movie would make more money if it's thought of a sequel to a successful movie. Thank you...I wouldn't be so concerned about it, but I am working on the Lists of film series. Most series are cut and dry, but this one is giving me a headache. Almost all of the Living Dead series are giving me fits, since the first Living Dead film went public domain. ACK!

Buffy plea

As a non-contibutor, I would just like to make the formal request that Buffy The Vampire Slayer not be included as "horror" in this Wiki. It's definitely not horror. Not even close. Just because something has a monster in it doesn't mean it's automatically horror. It does a disservice to horror fans to lump a lukewarm teen-angst comedy in with true horror.

There is Category:Comedy horror films.

There needs to be a distinction made here between the original Buffy film (which is definitely a "comedy-horror", IMO) and the television series, which is much "darker" than the film. I wouldn't consider the film for this WikiProject, but would include the TV show and the comic book series (as well as the spin-offs). - beautypersoni 17:00, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

One should respect a necromancer. I do it all the time. Now...an update.

Since posting the above, I have seen both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. I am now a thoroughly entrenched Cangel and Spuffy fan, though not Bangel. Spangel might be fun to see, but I doubt it. I have both series on DVD, that is how much a fan I have become. It all started when I happened upon an episode of Angel on TNT. I got hooked but couldn't stand the wait, plus how early I had to get up to watch it. I got Angel first, then Buffy. I now agree that Hush was a true horror episode, and there were a few others that are very close. These series are what I would consider pan-genre. Not only are they horror, but fantasy, science fiction, comedy, and drama all rolled into one. There are alternate realities and dimensions. Westerns is probably the one place these series won't fit. So, I retract my almost two year old statement.

Randall Flagg help

A user is attempting to remove an image of the character's death from the article because he didn't read (or didn't finish reading) the book, and it got spoiled for him.

Copyediting for horror

I think there should be a way (through this page) to get a list of the horror wikipages that need copyediting (as there is of horror stubs). However, I have no idea how to do this. Anyone know? I'm thinking there must be a way for it to search for horror and then for needing copyedit. Or vice-versa. Any thoughts?

A site that might be of use

Apparently there is a site called Cinemorgue that tracks (and has pictures of) the deaths of people in film (organized by the actor/actress portraying them). It seems to list well-known and one-time actors alike. Perhaps it could be used (maybe with a template?) on the bottom of horror/slasher film articles to list those who have died in the film for a "colorful" addition to articles? 24.126.199.129 08:59, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Witchfinder General

I put Witchfinder General up for peer review on August 20, but so far, after ten days, nobody has offered any suggestions as to how the article could be improved. Two kind souls made some minor typo corrections, but other than that there's been nothing. I know the article is far from perfect, but I love this movie and I would really like to make an attempt to bring this to Featured Article status if possible. A little Vampire article idea I had...

I've been poking my nose about the project and most pages don't look that active so I'm posting this idea here. I figured this would be the most likely place to find keen editors on this topic.

I came up with the idea a while back of creating a table of "Comparison of depictions of vampires in film and literature". The table would be made up of ticks and crosses with TV Series/Films/Books down the left and Vampire characteristics across the top. It would be in the style of other compartive tables such as

So for example, something like Buffy the Vampire Slayer would have "Turn to dust when staked" ticked but Bram Stoker's Dracula would have a cross there (if memory serves me).

If anyone would be interested in collaborating with me in getting this started off, I'd be very keen to hear. It could be a lot of fun, I think.

Look at things like Comparison of media players, it is merely a tabled form of already existing data, so I fail to see how that is original research. My table is doing essentially the same thing, taking already existing data from various media where vampires are depicted and putting it into a table. Yes, you are right, I'm sorry - doesn't fall under WP:OR if it sticks to a characteristics inventory and so it should be ok. However, please pay attention to the way you are building it as it is also somewhat borderline WP:CRUFT (though I personally wouldn't necessarily criticize something only based on that :-))? I've started to work my way through the list. It's worth noting I think that a significant number of the articles I've looked at so far have already been assessed for other wikiprojects, particularly films. Movie screencaps

I haven't uploaded images before... I could use a little help understanding what is required in the case of movie screenshots. I see that under Upload file there's a dropdown menu where "Movie screenshot" can be selected, but what should go in the Destination filename and Summary fields? It's pretty simple- once you get to that upload file page, you select the name of the screenshot that you want to upload in the "Browse..." window. Under destination filename, you put what you want the uploaded file to be called (For example, "Terminator Screenshot"). Under summary, you should put a description of the picture (short, like, screenshot from the film Terminator) and the fair use rationale (fair use in article on film). There are tags for the fair use things, if you click on the link in "tags" it'll take you to a list. Licensing, select whichever is applicable (Movie screenshot, DVD cover, etc). I've just created a Category for "Ghost films" (it falls under "films by topic" under "films"). Please add cat tags where necessary!  :) I'm also wondering if we should have a category for Bravo's 100 scariest movie moments, and other similar lists. Something like: "Category:Bravo's scariest movie moments" to tag movies that fall into that category (similar to the Saturn awards, etc). I don't have a strong opinion on this, it just might build up the database and be another way to reorganize things. Fictional werewolves category vs. WikiProject Dogs

oh, i did :). the character's minor werewolf aspect does not warrant a Dog banner. i also contacted the banner guy who's working on WikiProject Dogs (Badbilltucker, who is getting flak from other editors working on other fictional werewolf-related articles. i'm raising the issue because the 'simplest' thing doesn't seem to solve the problem, and re-jigging the categorization problem seems as if it would cut out future misunderstandings. -- Denstat 19:44, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

There's no reason for tagging everything in Canines as a Wikiproject:Dogs page. This comes up every so often when someone tags everyone in "Columbia Univeristy Alumni" as a part of "Wikiproject:New York" or whatever. The solution isn't to take Columbia University out of the New York category, it's to tag your project pages with some discretion. On the other hand, if anyone thinks that it's not factually accurate that "fictional werewolves" are "canines," just separate the categories, but don't do it to make project tagging easier. Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. The ratings are subjective, as explained here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Films/Assessment. It is also explained here how the process works and ratings can be re-reviewed or re-assessed. The Last Wave

Is it fair to say that The Last Wave is not predominantly a horror film? It has some occasional elements of horror if viewed from a certain angle, but I would not consider it a horror film as such. The same goes for Below (film) (see talk page). The thing is our editors follow imdb genre, which is not always very precise and disregard amg, which often has it by far better. I am not sure what your project's aims or criteria are, as far as inclusion, but it seems some members should run through your list with a critical eye and filter out whatever doesn't fit primarily to the "horror" genre. I'm editor of a free on-line journal The Irish Journal of Gothic and Horror Studies.[2]I think it would be quite suitable as a link on a couple of different Wikipedia articles. I'd be greatful if you could have a look at it and see what you think. It's a very eclectic mix of articles/essays, some Irish related some not. Also I'd appreciate if you could advise me whether it would be a good idea to link on to specific author's/film's Wikipedia pages that we have an extensive articles on... for example, we've a 7,000 word essays on The Company of Wolves, the comic book Preacher, Lovecraft and Le Fanu and so on. Hi, I just read your posting and figured I might help. I'm a Chaney nut (senior mostly though) for years back, and have been studying the paranormal and folklore pretty deep for about 25 years with some family links into the field (long story). I've browsed the site before but never joined as I'm not too adept at all the editing stuff and whatnot but had to join once I saw the werewolf article began with a mistake. So if you could please remove or tell me how to remove that a lycanthrope is not necessarily a werewolf. Pyschologically speaking (I've dealt with one, "interesting" guy) a lycanthrope is an individual that believes they can turn into a wild animal, commonly a wolf. A werewolf is of course an individual who is actually done it via some shapeshifting method. The last book I went through discussing that was by Colin Wilson and I believe was called the Dictionary of Possibilities. But any questions you have on the film at all, on werewolves, or the whole general field just email me. by-language would be great

I often want to read about the Horror films of the Spanish speaking world, or the French speaking world, but I find it hard to find the relevent articles. It would be great if there were categories for French-language-horrors, Spanish-language-horrors, etc. These would be subcategories of Horrors-by-language. Having by-country would be second best. Quiet horror

I'm surprised that, with Wikipedia having articles on the most minute, obscure genres in literature, music, and other areas, there's no article on "quiet horror." Charles L. Grant has been one of the biggest proponents, but a number of fairly well-known horror writers subscribe to or fit into the genre, and it is described in the introduction to many anthologies.

Some people use the phrase "quiet horror" in an informal way just to describe anything that isn't in-your-face blood-and-guts, but I think the genre has a more specific definition, fitting the fiction of Grant as well as Ramsey Campbell. One of the qualities I remember is an unsettling, creepy mood in events that otherwise seemed mundane.

One example I remember is Campbell's short story "Where the Heart Is" from The Architecture of Fear, an anthology of horror stories dealing with houses or buildings. In this story, a guy obsessively reminisces on the house he just sold. (If I recall correctly, his lover died in the house.) He gradually discovers that every time the new person redesigns a room, his memories associated with that room mysteriously vanish.

The problem is that I haven't been interested in horror for a long, long time, and I might not be the best person to write this article. Anyone else up to the task? marbeh raglaim 19:42, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

I made a comment on the village pump proposal page saying that the horror collaboration of the month should be brought back, and I was told that in order for this to happen I need to find more people interested in reverting it from it's historical status. As the WikiProject Horror main page makes a lot of references to this and from what I remember it got a lot of articles improved to a very high standard. So will any of you fine guys and girls help? Terence Stamp / The Hunger error?

In the Wiki, it says that "...Terence Stamp replaced David Bowie as host for the Second Series". However, I believe that it was the other way round: the DVD collection that is out has "Series 1" hosted by Terence Stamp, and "Series 2" hosted by David Bowie. Could someone please confirm or denyy this, and make the appropriate change?

Dispute Resolution Procedure REQUEST FOR COMMENT for article "The Rocky Horror Picture Show"

As per Wikipedia procedure for dispute resolution I am asking any and all members of this project to add input on a dispute over deletion of Taglines for this film, which was added to the National Film Registry in 2005. The original tagline "A Different Set of Jaws" is also listed as one of the most memorable taglines in history along with others. I also have at least one other reference source, an article on "The Rocky Horror Picture Show as Cultural Performance" with mention on the cultural impact of the tagline "Don't Dream It, Be It." Input is needed to resolve a current "Edit War" where an Editor keeps deleting without adding a better reason than he "Does not believe they are notable" with no further reference to back up the assertion. Request help

I have recently rewrote the entire Jason Voorhees article. It's modeled after Jabba the Hutt, Padme Amidala and Palpatine, the three Star Wars articles that have reached FA status. The article needs a good copyedit. My main problem is that I know the movies and character front and back, and having basically written the entire page, I tend to read it with the understanding already there. Because of that, I kind of miss things that an average reader, with no deep knowledge of the character, might not understand fully. So, besides copyediting, I also need people to present questions in places that may seem unclear for those that don't know the character. New guideline on fiction: Delete horror-related articles?

I would like to call the attention of members of this project to the recently revised guideline at WP:FICT, which states that all sub-articles on fictional subjects must independently meet a new (stricter) notability ruling than what was in place prior to the new guideline. If enforced, the new guideline would likely result in the deletion and/or merging of hundreds of articles on fictional subjects, such as fictional characters, television episodes, fictional locations, etc. There is active discussion / disagreement related to this issue at Wikipedia talk:Notability (fiction), and in the interests of ensuring the topic is fully discussed by interested editors, I would invite members of this project to participate in that discussion (whether you agree with the new guideline or not). Please do not tarnish the truth of the matter. The new FICT was only rewritten so that it did not contradict the general notability guideline, which is the first, and foremost, thing any article should look to. I don't think that one crossover makes for the need for a combined series template. (If that were the case, then the Alien template would not only be in its current AvP mess, but it would also have to include all of the Batman and Terminator series as well.) I would say that there should be separate templates for each series, both of which should include linkage to FvJ. Class/Importance labels for project talk pages

Greetings! I've noticed that the current project talk page template only classifies articles by stub, start, B, etc. There seems to be no classification based on importance. If desired, I can refactor the talk page template so that articles can be classified by top, high, mid, low, or NA importance (as well as "start", "stub", "GA", etc). I think, with a project like this, the importance assessment is way too subjective and would only ask for trouble. I can foresee someone seeing their favorite horror movie being assessed as low importance and overreacting. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

I said Project pages, not Taskforce pages. There is nothing that says you cannot have a Taskforce devoted to those articles, other than the number of people that want to help. If you're alone then there isn't a reason to have an entire task force.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 20:18, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

Okay, I understand that. All I was saying that it could be a future project, not definite. Even I have my doubts. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.
