Thoughts

A few things:

• First, props to starting this, it's long overdue.
• I object to including cheerleading in this, especially after looking at the many articles in the cheerleading category that are irrelevant to gymnastics, and more relevant to the sports project [1]. I'm willing to look past that though, esp. since the creator appears to be a one.
• I've removed Mass games from the project, as it is a performing-arts exhibition, and is way too much of a stretch to justify including in the gymnastics category. I'd like to try to stick with the fundamentals of the sport, and the articles directly related to it, as many need all the attention they can get before they're deleted. I also removed Equestrian vaulting, because it's already in the Equestrian project and, in all practicality, would detract from progress on gymnastics articles.
• There are a lot of organizational inconsistencies, for example, the Artistic gymnastics category [2] only lists a few athletes, mostly women. If we have other categories listing all gymnasts, why have it at all?

Also, why doesn't the Gymnast article exist in a list format/why isn't the title "List of gymnasts"? Doesn't this overlap with the one above?

• The tone and the majority of pictures in the article portray gymnastics as a female sport for young children. Considering it's one of the most difficult sports, and men play a large role, I think we should try to get as many quality photos to include as possible. More of men (in the men's section) couldn't hut either.
• That's all for now, feel free to respond, but let's work on getting a lot more users involved (hopefully some men as well), and improving the two main articles: Artistic gymnastics, and gymnastics. Thanks. DMCer (talk) 05:25, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

I'd also like to say hello. You have some great ideas! I'm glad this project exists.

• I agree that I don't think cheerleading should be included in this. At most, I think the scope of the project should be the disciplines recognized by the FIG, with artistic and rhythmic taking top priority.

• We definitely need to work on getting photos. Most of the ones uploaded to articles here are deleted, and there really doesn't seem to be a way to get free use ones. How to deal with this...I do not know.

• More fact checking/objectivity on gymnasts' pages. A number of the pages have statements such as "a lot of fans thought Gymnast X should have won the gold." I think talking about official score protests and reactions is fine (ie the 2004 incident where the crowd booed about Alexei Nemov's HB score for 15 minutes, or the cases where gymnasts have taken their medals off to protest) but some of the other remarks toe the line of POV. Getting references and footnotes for some articles would be swell too. DanielEng (talk) 05:57, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

• First, If you don't think Cheerleading is relevant, go ahead and remove it. Its not a big deal.

• Photos are an issue. I've searched commons, and found pretty much the same images, and nothing special. If anyone is going to a meet, take lots of pictures, I'm sure some of them will be okay.

• There are several requested articles, if anyone has specific knowledge or just cares to try and tackle them, that would be great.

Gymnast Infobox

Hello all. :) I have been bold and created an infobox for gymnastics biographical articles. I would appreciate any and all feedback on it, including changes and corrections. I took the basic fields from the FIG profiles and the one on the Nastia Liukin article, as well as pulling ones from other athlete infoboxes. I tried to be as thorough as possible, but I'm sure that I've left some things out. :) I have put together some samples of how the infobox currently looks at User:Kolindigo/Gymnastics Infobox Test.

I would like to start implementing the infobox on gymnastics biographies in about a week to give it time to settle in and get the kinks knocked out before the Olympics. Please come by, take a look, and make any changes you think would help. Kolindigo (talk) 05:32, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Kolindigo, I was just thinking of creating a gymnast infobox! I was looking at the infoboxes used for swimmers (see Michael Phelps for a sample), but yours looks very similar and great! I especially like the show/collapse button for the medal record.

This is an awesome infobox. I've already started adding it to articles; I'm trying to get to the most prominent gymnasts first and then work through the years. The two things I'd like to run by everyone:

--Height should be nixed from the infobox, simply because it changes. For Nadia, for instances, do we add her 1976 competition height or 1980? Et al. --For level, I'd suggest just "senior international" instead of "senior international elite" because elite is mostly a U.S. term. Senior International gets the idea across without that.

I think height might be more important for gymnasts who are currently competing and so have an "official height". When a gymnast is/was growing noticably during the height of her career, maybe it should be noted in the article and left blank in the infobox? Kolindigo (talk) 05:54, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

And, if it's okay, I'd like to move the discussion on the music from my talk page. :) The FIG profile leaves room for more than one music choice. If there is more than one music selection, I think we should list all of them, and if there are specific years, then list them, too. But I don't know. Is music choice major enough that it should have its own table in the article? How often do gymansts change their music? If it's often enough, then I do think taking it out of the infobox would be good, because it would take up too much space. But if it's only one or two selections, then I think it would fit. Thoughts? No worries at all. :) Those are good points about the FIG profiles. These days it seems as though gymnasts change their FX every two years or so, but I think it's very variable with the gymnasts. On the one hand, we have gymnasts like Dina Kochetkova who kept the same music for years, but then what do we do with someone like Oksana Chusovitina, who has been in the sport for 20 years and has like 15 different pieces FX music?

An alternative I'd like to suggest is to expand on what is done in some gymnasts' articles and put the music in the skills section. If there's already a rundown of all the gymnasts' tumbling and floor skills, it seems as though mentioning the music would be a good idea there. Oksana C. above already has this in her article; Andreea Raducan is another who does. What do you think?DanielEng (talk) 15:34, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Looks good to me, and I've been applying it to any {{gymnastics-bio-stub}} that's missing a defaultsort and all the British gymnasts, too. DanielEng just messaged me and suggest that I join. Never involved in gymnastics other than being a big fan and following closely since 1995. Done some work on it already on here, much of which I link to on my user page. Dunno about how much more I'll get done, but we'll see. If anybody has comments/criticism on my work or has suggestions about where to go from here (I have some ideas but they are awfully ambitious and I don't know how much of them I'll bear into fruition) please let me know. Now that another IOC/FIG investigation has again found the He Kexin et al innocent of the underage charge levied by blogger Mike Walker and USOC exec Jim Shurr, is it possible for their wiki pages to relfect some sort of prepondrance re their age, in accordance to BLP? I mean would you like to see your daughter/sister put thru the ringer like this? I hope they never will.

Blue link drive: 2008 Olympic medal contenders/medalists

Hello, all. I'm proposing a blue link drive for gymnasts who will be competing at the 2008 Olympics. We have six days until the Olympics, and I think we should do our best to create articles for medal contenders. Olympians are inherently notable for being Olympians, so ideally we should make articles for every gymnast at the games. But I think the medal contenders in individual events and the all-around and members of medal-contending teams should be the highest priority in article creation. This way, we can make sure the article has an infobox, basic information explaining notability, notable external links like to the FIG profile, and is in the correct categories. We don't want an Olympic medalist to get speedy-deleted for not asserting notability or the article being a blatant copyvio.

As for who are medal contenders, honestly, I think if the question even comes up if someone is or isn't a contender, then make the article. We only need stubs right now with the basic information. The articles can be expanded at any time, and I imagine that during the Olympics, there will be plenty of people working to improve the articles of the medalists.

The infobox is Template:Infobox Gymnast. Feel free to add necessary fields that don't exist yet, or just leave a note here or on the infobox talk page that certain fields are required. Probably the main notable link that every article should have is to the FIG profile. The template is {{FIG | id= | name= }}. FIG profiles can easily be found by using the FIG athlete profile search page. I have had problems in the past getting the profile link to open from there, but if you mouse-over the link, you will see the full URL in the status bar, and so all you need to do is note the ID number and add it to the end of the basic FIG URL http://www.fig-gymnastics.com/events/athletes/bio.jsp?ID= to get the full link. Other notable links are sites like official sites and their Olympics profile from their NOC, if one exists.

Other important things are interwiki links and categories. A good way to find interwiki links is to use the interwiki links from the $country at 2008 Summer Olympics page to that country's language. Use the interwiki link from that page and look down to where the gymnastics pictogram is. Categories that should be used for bio aricles are [[Category:[country] gymnasts]], for example Category:Russian gymnasts. Once the Olympics begin, two other categories that should be added are Category:Gymnasts at the 2008 Summer Olympics and [[Category:Olympic gymnasts of [country]]], for example Category:Olympic gymnasts of Russia.

I don't have a full list in front of me right now with all the gymnasts who have been named to Olympic teams, but I imagine one exists somewhere. ;) I think the only full team (men and women) that has been blue-linked is the American one. I will try to blue-link the remaining Chinese redlinks today. For other high priority ones, maybe look through the 2007 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships and see who still needs to be bluelinked. We should also go through and do a basic cleanup on pages for medal contenders that have already been created, but need an infobox/external link cleanup/or even just a basic sentence stating their gymnastics accomplishments.

It's a good idea. :) Both NBC and IG have the full rosters. The latter is here: [3]. Unfortunately the FIG website seems to be wonky right now, because all the bios are turning up as dead links, but I also notice that they have a special website up for the Olympics. Hopefully it is just temporary but it'd definitely cutting down on available info. In the meantime I've been trying to make my way through the lists and make pages for as many of the gymnasts as I can who do have other info available online--help is needed, most definitely. :) DanielEng (talk) 06:36, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

What chance is there of an article about the perfect score?

As I am in discussion to move the article about the adult magazine titled Perfect 10 as the score I consider is far more notable, the trouble is that there are users who seem to object to the move, that is because there are no article about it, plus it is difficult to collect every perfect 10 scores there is on the web, as I am interested in a list of gymnasts who achieved that score, which is partly my reason for page move. Also in my opinion, the score is far more notable than both the magazine and the song of the same name.

Should the article about the magazine be moved, feel free to discuss it there and what chance is there about an article and list about the score. Jay Pegg (talk) 16:33, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

I also think that it's a good idea. Currently I am working at a list of romanian artistic gymnasts who scored a perfect 10 (including the competition at which they received it).

What do you think about creating a banner (or an image) that could be added on the gymnast page that would suggest that the gymnast scored a perfect 10? And by clicking on the banner one is redirected to a page with a list of gymnasts who scored a perfect 10. (Unfortunately I don't have the skills to do it. )

Helpers needed at high-profile articles

I know we all have a lot to do right now, but I'm putting out a call for helpers for our Chinese team articles--specifically He Kexin, Yang Yilin and Jiang Yuyuan, the girls accused of competing under falsified ages. There's been a lot of back-and-forth and POV editing at these articles. He Kexin qualified for IP protection because of all the vandalism but the other two are still getting a lot of hits from IP editors with an axe to grind on one side of the debate or the other. Anyway, please put these pages on your watchlist if you can--it's a lot better if we're all there, than if it's just me reverting all the POV constantly. After being told that it's sufficient for an article to just mention somebody for it be used as source for cheating, and that my attempts to stick to BLP is actually edit-warring for the second time, I've decided to wash my hands of it all. Stub sorting

Given the vast number of articles tagged with {{gymnastics-bio-stub}}, I've wandered over to Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting and proposed splitting by discipline. Hopefully this might make it easier to break the work down on expanding these articles where appropriate. I made a stub on Peter Korman. (I think he deserves a page for medaling in 76 and then for his coaching.) I don't know how to rate the pages (is it ok, to rate my own page as a stub?) Also, I think that some articles should basically stay "stub-sized". Category sorting

What are people's feelings of recategorising Category:gymnasts (at the 'by country' level) to reflect their discipline? (So Rhythmic gymnasts of Russia, Artistic gymnasts of England, etc.) -- ratarsed (talk) 19:29, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

Hmmm. I don't know. I worry it would be compartmentalizing too much. Right now, how do the WAG/MAG/RG categories look? If there are hundreds of articles in each, I might see categorizing further. The cats for artistic gymnasts/rhythmic gymnasts/trampolinists are sparse to say the least, as most of the general public seem to think gymnastics is just artistic gymnastics - I don't mind doing the categorisation; it can be quite therapeutic after a day in the office, I might be stubsorting the lot anyway, so I'll be passing, so to speak... Gymnastics at the 1956 Summer Olympics

Hi, i came across the above article as part of WP:OLY however I unsure about the abbeviations used for the headings "WAG" and "MAG". My guess would be men's/women's all-round gymnastics but i'm not certain. That'd be "Women's Artistic Gymnastics" and "Men's Artistic Gymnastics" respectively -- you may also see RG for Rhythmic Gymnastics or TRA for Trampolining (ACRO for Acrobatic Gymnastics and AER for Aerobic Gymnastics) -- All abbreviations from FIG -- ratarsed (talk) 21:36, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Kip (Gymnastics)

I thought I would have a quick look at this but soon realised that I could add nothing since I understand Kip as a trampolining term. There is a disambiguation at Kip but Trampolining is now considered to be 'Trampoline Gymnastics' with Gymnastics the umbrella term. Should Kip (Gymnastics), then, either be renamed Kip (Artistic Gymnastics) or the disambiguation removed from Kip and the two Gymnastics interpretations of Kip both dealt with in the Kip (Gymnastics) article? Categories

Just noticed some new categorisation going on and wondering if a conscious decision was made to create a category English trampolininsts rather than British trampolininsts. Our Welsh, Scots and Northern Ireland bouncers who may on occasions represent GB might feel left out by the current categorisation. This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. GAN backlog reduction - Sports and recreation

As you may know, we currently have 400 good article nominations, with a large number of them being in the sports and recreation section. As such, the waiting time for this is especially long, much longer than it should be. As a result of this, I am asking each sports-related WikiProject to review two or three of these nominations. If this is abided by, then the backlog should be cleared quite quickly. Some projects nominate a lot but don't review, or vice-versa, and following this should help to provide a balance and make the waiting time much smaller so that our articles can actually get reviewed! There is discussion ongoing at Wikipedia_talk:BIO#RFC:_WP:Athlete_Professional_Clause_Needs_Improvement debating possible changes to the WP:ATHLETE notability guideline. As a result, some have suggested using WP:NSPORT as an eventual replacement for WP:ATHLETE. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

Drafting new page for Amanar named vault

I'm workin up a draft article on the element, the Amanar, in my sandbox: User:TCO/Sandbox/Amanar. Appreciate any advice as I draft it. Please don't edit, but comment on article's talk page or here. Once I get it to a decent state, of course, will throw it in main space.

Few random questions:

1. Anyone know the story and/or have source for Shewfelt's first completions of the 2.5? Did he do it first?

2. RS for Amanar performing the 2.5? I guess FIG would work as a source for the naming credit, but looking for a source for the performance at 2000 Olys.

3. RS for the Nabieva downgrade and protest at 2010 WC.

Varsity Spirit is a division of Varsity Brands Inc. (or at least was, in 2001, when Varsity Brands, Inc. got their present name and headquarters. FIG website

FIG is apparently in the process of redesigning their website. Sometime between Dec 20 and Dec 31, the URL http://www.fig-gymnastics.com/ started redirecting to http://www.fedintgym.com/site/ (which, based on a blurb at the shorter http://www.fedintgym.com/, seems to be their special-purpose server for obtaining press credentials), and links to pages within their site (e.g., their "calendar" of events) stopped working. This means almost all the links to their site that we have in our articles here at WP are now broken (example). A blurb at the new URL mentions "temporary webpages" and "Thanks for your patience", which I assume means the old URL (still visible in their logo, even at the new homepage) will work again soon. I don't understand why they had to redirect their URL in the meantime — or why it's taking so long since they did that. I just hope we won't have to "manually" update all our links to FIG's website. That would be very annoying (unless, of course, they switch to a much more user-friendly [that is to say, "template-friendly"] URL format — that would actually make it worth it). - dcljr (talk) 16:17, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

User talk:ThiagoSimoes have edited several articles, deleting information about what he calls: minor competitions. Can someone just edit every article like he wants, just that way? I am not some random user who is doing "what I want as I want". If you care to look at my list of contributions, you will see that I have created 30 pages about gymnastics topics and I have edited hundreds of other pages. I was advised by User talk: MATThematical to come here and look for help in order to edit pages from here on, so I can assure you that future edits will be made only if there is consensus on the subject.

I see her article was made back in April 2014. Did someone try to delete it? IMO anyone who has won a medal at worlds or Europeans (or Asian Games, Pan Ams etc) automatically meets the criteria for notability. IMO anyone who has competed at worlds for basically the top 24 teams deserves a profile, because they also typically have other decent international results.
