A case of ambiguous awards edit

While poking around the project structure, I found two different awards listed under (practically) the same name: Template:GOCE Award and Template:GOCE award.

Template:GOCE Award produces:

  The Guild of Copy Editors' Award
{{{1}}}

While Template:GOCE award is the drive/blitz awards. I want to disambiguate them (maybe move them to Template:GOCE Gold Star Award and Template:GOCE barnstar award for the two. Is it okay with everybody? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ben79487 (talkcontribs)

@Ben79487: I probably had a minute of confusion about this when I first went through this, but it's not a big deal. It is a very quiet corner of the wiki and only GOCE coordinators should be dealing with these. We have to use {{subst:GOCE award}} an awful lot at the close of drives and blitzes, and even if that's usually a copy&paste I'd rather not have the template's name any longer than it is. I did a quick search (results) and found 42 talk pages (or talk page archives) where {{GOCE Award}} had been used, mostly from around 2013. I suppose it's a legacy; those who have been around longer could probably tell you more. If we ever reorganize the blitz/drive system – which is a possibility with the shrinking backlog – it could use useful to consider how things were handled in the past, so I'd be hesitant to change it too much. – Reidgreg (talk) 15:48, 27 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
This is probably my fault. I created Template:GOCE award (lower case) without noticing that there was already a Template:GOCE Award (upper case). That's just carelessness by me. Since the new one (award) is only substituted, we could move it to a new name without breaking anything, and then just update the documentation. Since (as Reidgreg says) the new award template is used only with copy/paste (at least by the two of us), I don't mind a slightly longer name. If we can come up with a good concise name, I'll be happy to do the moving and updating. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:56, 27 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hey, it could have been worse (like upper case singular and lower case plural). I ran another search and counted 14 talk pages (& archives) where GOCE Award was transcluded instead of substituted (again from around 2013). GOCE award always seems to have been substituted, no doubt due to the thorough instructions. (It is, btw, a great all-in-one template which makes giving out the plethora of awards quick and painless.) As for possible names: Template:GOCE Barnstars would be consistent with the /Barnstars pages used to tally blitz and drive awards, so maybe that will be easy to remember? – Reidgreg (talk) 14:09, 2 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Ribbons edit

I notice that niether the Gold Star Award nor the Silver Star Award have ribbon equivalents. Unless WikiProject members disagree, I'd commission each at WP:RB, which has worked in the past. I'm not going to boldly do it because these awards belong to the WikiProject and therefore only have validity if there is a consensus here among members. Is there a need for them? Thanks for coming to ask us. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:42, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I was just awarded one each and I use ribbons on my user page. GOCE deserves to advertise what it awards rather than be represented by a placeholder ribbon. One request at RB with a minimal reward will likely net a reasonable solution which serves forevermore. Chris Troutman (talk) 17:51, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
It sounds like you would like a ribbon for your personal use, which is enough justification for me. I am a coordinator emeritus and in no way speak for the other coordinators, but in general on Wikipedia, a new file or template being useful is a valid reason for its creation. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:13, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
