Maps of prisons in states

I started making some maps of state parks to supplement list articles. (Example: List_of_Washington_state_parks)

I then switched over to prisons. I know more about parks than I know about prisons, so I thought I'd come here to asked some questions to make sure this goes well.

In the case of parks, I think the entries are generally too "dense" to allow labels. However, that may not be a problem with prisons (although Florida looks like an exception).

An editor @WhisperToMe: added some labels to the Iowa page: Iowa_Department_of_Corrections

I tried doing something similar in the case of Idaho although several of the locations are near Boise which create some problems: Idaho_Department_of_Correction#Facilities

Question: My original map of Iowa had federal prisons which I identified with a different color pog. WhisperToMe Remove them with the understandable note that federal prisons aren't exactly relevant to an article about "Iowa Department of Corrections".

However, two things are worth noting:

  • Some articles are of the form "(state X) Department of Corrections", in which case inclusion of federal prisons doesn't make sense, but some articles are of the form "List of state X State prisons" in which case it isn't quite so clear.
  • The category I used to create the maps, which is of the canonical form "prisons in state X" generally includes federal prisons. I think it would make sense for this wikiproject to determine whether the inclusion criteria for the category ought to be changed to exclude federal prisons, or whether the articles listing prisons in a state ought to also include federal prisons. I don't think it makes much sense to have an article convention to exclude federal prisons while simultaneously having an associated category which includes federal prisons.

I slightly prefer of the latter but if there already is an article covering all of the federal prisons, maybe it would make sense to modify the category inclusion criteria.

I think our decision ought to be based on what readers expect. Again, prisons is not my area of expertise, but as a reader, if I'm looking at an article which is a list of prisons in Florida, I would expect it to include both the state and federal. Maybe others have a different view.

I separately interested in views on whether labels are helpful, and whether it would be better to use very short labels as used by WhisperToMe or slightly longer labels if they fit.--S Philbrick(Talk) 17:09, 5 December 2017 (UTC)

If it's a list that is "prisons in state X" I would include federal prisons in that. In regards to "List of state X State prisons" I think they're only meant to include prisons operated by state corrections agencies or private prisons contracted with the state. Smaller states could have the former, and bigger ones could have the latter. WhisperToMe (talk) 20:49, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
Sounds reasonable, but how do we address the cat inclusion criteria?--S Philbrick(Talk) 01:58, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
For "prisons in state X" categories all kinds (federal, state, private) are okay, but for "state prisons in state X" only those directly operated by the state may be included. WhisperToMe (talk) 02:46, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

Bureau of Prisons Prisoner locator

The external links to specific entries in the Bureau of Prisons prisoner locator now all default to https://www.bop.gov/inmateloc rather than going to the inmate’s BoP record. Accordingly, I am going to start removing those EL’s where I find them, such as at List of former inmates of US Penitentiary, Florence ADX, unless there are any strong objections. Criminal justice financial obligations

I just stubbed Criminal justice financial obligations. Sorry for it being just a single sentence. I will deorphan it and do what else I can. If anyone out there cares about the subject, please consider adding a bit to expand it. There are plenty of refs pasted its talk page. Many thanks. Bills and invoices for criminal justice financial obligations

Hi. I'm looking for the bills and invoices given to those who were incarcerated. They are for the Criminal justice financial obligations article.

Examples:

  • Bill for per diem jail charges
  • Fines
  • Restitution
  • Bill for court costs

An example of what I am after is contained roughly half way into this pdf.

(I cannot find anything at commons.)

So, if anyone has something like this and can take a photo of it to upload to commons, it would really improve the article.

Many thanks!

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Scope

Does this project's scope include biographies of prisoners? Does it include articles about fictional works which are set in prisons? Jim Michael (talk) 15:24, 17 May 2019 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
