This will describe the events behind the WP:420 collaboration, 2017, in the hopes of documenting a successful project and improving next time around.

Most events will be on-wiki with a few notable real-world exceptions (italics).

  • 2016-11-04: Another Believer proposes 2017 420 editathon at WP Cannabis
  • 2016-11-08: 2016 United States elections. "Recreational marijuana" legalized by initiative in California, Nevada, Maine and Massachusetts.
  • 2016-12-12: Redlist created for cannabis topics
  • 2016-12-26: Redlist grows past 1,000 characters

January 2017 edit

  • 2017-01-08: Another Believer posts first project-related information at WP:WikiProject Cannabis. Initially some use of "editathon" terminology.
  • 2017-01-08: Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney joins collaborators list a few minutes later
  • 2017-01-17: Redlist grows past 5,000 characters
  • 2017-01-18: Number of registered collaborators reaches 10
  • 2017-01-25: First press coverage received

February 2017 edit

  • 2017-02-04: Another Believer creates tagging templates for new or improved articles, categories, templates
  • 2017-02-11: Redlist grows past 10,000 characters

March 2017 edit

  • 2017-03-01: Wikimedia Foundation notified
  • 2017-03-05: Press release draft started

April 2017 edit

  • 2017-04-03: Project invitation template draft started
  • 2017-04-03: Signpost contacted
  • 2017-04-03: Conflict with backup server test on 2017-04-19 identified
  • 2017-04-10–11: Invitations sent to other projects
  • 2017-04-10: CBC announces national legalization act will be tabled later in the week
  • 2017-04-10: Press releases sent out to ~26 organizations
  • 2017-04-14: WP Bolivia, England, etc. reverts & 420 talkpage dialog
  • 2017-04-14: WikiProject Vancouver reverts
  • 2017-04-15: Article drive officially begins. First contribution, Cannabis Act (Canada), is posted.
  • 2017-04-15: Invitations posted to 14 other-language Wikipedias. Arabic Wikipedia reverts, Italian initially reverts but ultimately relocates the invite to the proper location. Positive response at Catalan, Czech, Dutch, French, and Portuguese Wikipediae.
  • 2017-04-16: CamiloBer04 produces the first other-language page, the translation es:Blunt (cigarrillo de cannabis). (Though kudos to Cbrescia who technically jumped the gun by posting translation es:Tintura de cannabis 7h4m too early for the window.)
  • 2017-04-16: Megalibrarygirl compiles Women in Red/Cannabis
  • 2017-04-16: Wikimedia Foundation posts Community Digest mentioning 420 collab
  • 2017-04-17: Number of new articles reaches 10.
  • 2017-04-17: Number of new articles reaches 50.
  • 2017-04-19: West Virginia governor signs medical cannabis bill
  • 2017-04-19: 10th new category created
  • 2017-04-20: "420" Day
  • 2017-04-20: Daily pageviews of 420 (cannabis culture) exceed 350,000
  • 2017-04-21: 50th new category created
  • 2017-04-27: 420 (cannabis culture) reported at #9 on April 16-22 top 25 traffic report
  • 2017-04-27: 75th new category created
  • 2017-04-28: 25th new template created
  • 2017-04-28: 100th new article created
