Royal Helena

A new Bulgarian sailing ship was launched on 29 August this year, the Royal Helena. I've not been able to find much out about her from English language sources. Are there any members of this WP who are able to expand the stub article I've created with Bulgarian sources?

The destruction of Thracian Bulgarians

The article "The destruction of Thracian Bulgarians" has been nominated for deletion: [1]. The chief argument (apart from the easily correctable naming problem, with which I agree somewhat) is the lack of reliable, secondary sources. As this seems to be only article on Wikipedia dealing with the massacre and expulsion of the Bulgarians from Eastern Thrace, it would be a good idea if good sources were found to establish its notability, so the article can be kept, perhaps under a different name. Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

Plastic manufacture

Sadova is the home of a rather unusual English owned Polythene film and bag factory Bulgaria Polythene Industries. Operating 24 hours a day it produces about 20 tonnes a week all of which are sent to the United Kingdom, a lorry leaving weekly. Third Bulgarian State

Currently there are three articles concerning the history of Bulgaria since 1878 (History of Bulgaria 1878-1946, People's Republic of Bulgaria and History of Bulgaria since 1989). Since these are not separate national entities, I propose merging the first and the last one into a single article entitled "Third Bulgarian State", and adding some info from the second one while leaving it as a main. Currently History of Bulgaria 1878-1946 and since 1989 are fairly useless, especially the latter. There is no need of such fragmenting. - ☣Tourbillon ^A ? 11:09, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

You are right that there is fragmentation and confusion, especially having in mind that we also have Principality of Bulgaria and Kingdom of Bulgaria. It seems that the practice is such articles to exist, as should People's Republic of Bulgaria exist but all those entities are part of the Third Bulgarian State. Therefore, in my opnion the articles you suggest should be merged by the name "History of the Third Bulgarian State" which would include everything since 1878. The worst part is that there is no logical distinction between Principality of Bulgaria and Kingdom of Bulgaria, just an event in 1908, but I cannot think of an appropriate name for a common article. --Gligan (talk) 13:41, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

Principality of Bulgaria, Kingdom of Bulgaria and People's Republic of Bulgaria should stay separate as they represent different forms of government. However, I am supportive of a merge for the 1878-1946 and "since 1989" periods in one article. The first one basically copies Kingdom of Bulgaria, and the second one contains very little information. History of the Third Bulgarian State would be an appropriate title, but it will be better if we hear more opinions on the issue as there might be objections - after all, we're discussing a very large transfer of information and restructuring. - ☣Tourbillon ^A ? 14:49, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

1894 elections

According to The Times, the "Unionists" won 27 seats in the 1894 elections. The only "Unionists" I can find that existed during this period were the Bulgarian Social Democratic Union. However, that party merged into the Bulgarian Workers' Social Democratic Party before the elections were held, so I'm not sure if they still existed. Were the Times referring to the BRSDP or to another group? Cheers, Number 57 19:59, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

Hey, I was trying to dig up something on this the past couple of days. Unfortunately, there seems to be no data on said elections, available online that is. You're right that the Social Democratic Union members were called "Unionists". And again, they did indeed merge into BRSDP, together with the other socialist party of the time. The resulting Union got two MPs (Yanko Sakazov and Nikola Gabrovski) in the next parliament, at least that is what every single Bulgarian source I go to claimed. The Bulgarian Socialist Democratic Party website claims the same. Bulgarian sources also suggest that just 149 MPs were elected. Could it be that the NY Times is wrong?--Laveol ^T 22:47, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay in replying - I was away on holiday. Erm, no idea if the Times were wrong, but they are generally a fairly reliable source. I've checked again and that is definitely the figure (27 seats). It also mentions that they were an opposition party. Number 57 18:53, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

WW1 Reparations

Hi, I am working on the World War I reparations article. I am currently expanding the information on the Bulgarian reparation demands and payments. Thus far, I have established the following:

1 - Treaty of Neuilly established that Bulgaria had to pay 2.250 billion Gold francs in reparations.(Treaty of Neuilly, Article 121)
2 - In 1923, the Bulgarian reparation sum was "revised downwards" to 550 million gold francs "plus a lump sum payment of 25 million francs for occupation costs".(Marks, Myths of Reparations, pp. 234-5)
3 - Between the treaty signing and April 1922, 173 million gold francs were paid (1)
4 - Between 1925 and 1929, Bulgaria paid a further 41 million gold francs, before reparations were abandoned at the Lausanne conference of 1932.(2)

Can anyone provide additional information (including sources)? Such as:

1 - Do the above figures represent total Bulgarian reparation payment, and if not what was it?
2 - Did an event, such as the Dawes Plan for example, occur to revise down the Bulgarian reparation payments?

Electoral system

Could anyone confirm the electoral system currently used in Bulgaria. There seems to be confusion over whether the single-member constituencies still exist, or whether all seats are elected by proportional representation. The IPU claims the former, whilst the IFES claims both... Cheers, Number 57 08:22, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

All seats are elected by proportional representation. They tested out a mixed electoral system in the 2009 elections when 31 of the seats were elected from single-member constituencies. The next elections (2013) did not feature any form of majority vote. However, there is a motion to once again amend the Electoral Code in the near future. --Laveol ^T 11:19, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

Communist Bulgarian technology

Hi. I was recently looking at the Bulgaria article and saw that there was no mention to any of the computers (Pravets, Vitosha...) built in the PRB from the 60's to the 80's. On the People's Republic of Bulgaria page, there is a picture of the Vitosha and a helpful caption about the "Silicon Valley of the Eastern Bloc." Could we add some more information to the Bulgaria article, or at least link the "Science and Technology" section of the Bulgaria page to the "Economy" section of the PRB page? Black Box International Festival

I have been creating (also in french) the Black Box International Festival's page (it is a theater and dance festival that takes place every year in Plovdiv). Is there any debate about any of the language sections? Does it reflect correctly and completely this WikiProject? If there's a language where there isn't agreement, then shouldn't an "under discussion" sticker be on the individual language and we can work to remove the the "proposal" header above all of them? Bulgarian Cup

Needs Clarification on the amount of teams competing in the A PFG division 16 or 10, is disputed.

I'm not entirely sure what competition you are referring to. Is it the Bulgarian A Football Group, which is the league competition, or the Bulgarian Cup, which is the actual cup competition. There does not seem to be a dispute regarding the number of teams participating in the league - it is 10, though one might soon get thrown out of the competition.--Laveol ^T 10:28, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

The 10,000 Challenge

Tu(a)rnovo

Hello,

Just passing to say that something could be made to homegenize the transcriptions Turnovo/Tarnovo. Both places (Veliko Tarnovo and the lesser Turnovo) exist but they're not the same. The problem is that in general, outside Wikipedia, Turnovo is used in honorific styles (although the town it refers may be Tarnovo). At least on the same page, one transcription only should be used.

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

The article was directly added to the mainspace without being vetted by WP:AFC, so it's not clear if the subject is actually notable enough for a stand-alone article. Blagoevgrad Province

Following a recent decision to merge a category into Category:Blagoevgrad Province, I suggested that both the category and it's eponymous article be renamed to Category:Blagoevgrad (province). While it is disambiguated in this way (oblast) in the Bulgarian wiki, it is not so in the English wiki. For some reason there is a preference to use "XXX Province". Is this how the province in known in Bulgaria? Or is it just known as Blagoevgrad? What's your opinion? Laurel Lodged (talk) 14:36, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

Westernmost point of Bulgaria

I was looking into List of extreme points of Bulgaria and comparing with Google Earth. It looks like the Westernmost point as per Google Earth is in the Vidin province (https://www.google.com/maps/@43.8118097,22.3573764,18z) as opposed to the place mentioned in the article in the Kyustendil province (https://www.google.com/maps/@42.3118789,22.3606463,17z). PFC Ludogorets Razgrad

• I cite the following sources and explain that there is a difference between incorporation date on September 18, 2010 and the date "The club was founded in 1945". Additionally, there had been some discussion about the year 2000/2001. Translating the only available source about that: "Razgrad 2000 was founded in 2000. Before the start of 2010/11 football season, the club inheritted the history, symbols, name and traditional records of the city's club Ludogorets 1945." I can further explain this source, which was written by a fellow citizen /football fan who owns this website/, because I live in Razgrad and I am able to provide more detailed information. Ludogorets was established in 1945 after the merging of several rural football clubs from the Ludogorie Region. Ludogorets Razgrad was initially participating in the Third football division of Bulgaria. They promoted to the Second division in 1961. In 1997 the club merged with FC Antibiotic Razgrad and was renamed to FC Antibiotic-Ludogorets but then the club defuncted due to financial problems. It is important to note that the club was not registered as a private company. Meanwhile the citizens of our small town, lead by Alexandar Alexandrov who later became the director of the club, created a youth club named Razgrad 2000. In 2009/2010 the club was purchased by a Bulgarian pharmeceutical entrepreneur - Kiril Domuschiev who incorporated the club by merging all previous Ludogorets' and Razgrad 2000' properties, stadium, team management, players, coaches, symbols and making it a private company. This club is the original successor of the traditions and history of Ludogorets 1945 and right now a Professional Football Club. I know it is hard to understand this for people who haven't lived in a communist country. The real thing is that before 1987 Bulgaria's government owned everything. There weren't any private companies. This means that even if the club was later privately, it was actually established long time ago. It is a common situation here and the same happened with other football clubs. Most recently with CSKA Sofia, which merged with Litex in 2016 but kept the history of the club in 1948.

Other sources: All sources you could find state that the club was founded in 1945. Even yesterday, they had their 75th Anniversary celebration in front of all the Bulgarian football community. Seimbru (talk) 09:12, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

First women MPs in Bulgaria

Hello. I'm compiling a list of the first women MPs in each country, but have been unable to locate such a list for Bulgaria. There is also a disagreement between sources of how many there were (various ones put it at between 12 and 16). If anyone can point me to a definitive source, it would be much appreciated. Russian or Bulgarian?

I wonder if either Russian or Bulgarian language is used for the last inscription on this picture of an Ottoman-era bakery in Istanbul/Constantinople. The caption says that the name is written in Russian, next to Armenian, Ladino (in Hebrew characters), English, Ottoman Turkish and Greek; however I guess that Bulgarian would have been more likely in this era. My knowledge of either language, and of the evolution of spelling since the early 20th century does not allow me to tell the difference. The sign seems to read: "Американска? пекарня". Thank you! Any idea why an Ottoman-era bakery would use Russian instead of Bulgarian, next to other native languages like Greek, Armenian and Ladino? I guess that there would have been a much bigger local Bulgarian population in Constantinople at the time than a Russian one. Could it be a spelling mistake? User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

It appears that the subject's notability is hinging on Bulgarian sources, and as I don't know from Bulgaria, it would be greatly helpful to have some eyes with knowledge of the region, its media, etc., to help bring some clarity. Balkan Latinity WikiProject

Hello, I've been thinking for a while of an idea for a new and certainly needed WikiProject. The Aromanians/Vlachs, Megleno-Romanians/Meglenites and Istro-Romanians/Ćiribirci are poorly known peoples in the Balkans, the only ones that are Romance-speaking apart of the Romanians. Tagging pages related to these with WikiProject templates can turn problematic, see this talk page for example [2], saturated with 7 different templates. I was thus thinking that giving them their own WikiProject could increase organization on Wikipedia about info on these peoples and increase their representation in the project, perhaps even attracting members of these groups into working at Wikipedia. The project could be split into three task forces for each of the three.

If you're interested, please ping me here or message me on my talk page. Expressing your interest in the existence of such a project is enough, you will not be compromised or pressured into working in a topic area you might lose interest to soon. Help on Eastern European languages

Hello!

Our of boredom, I am trying to identify the languages of inscriptions on a fountain located in central Budapest. I could easily identify some languages such as Hebrew, Armenian, Russian, English, French, Spanish etc. but I have trouble with some, mostly Slavic, languages which I do not speak myself. I guess that they must include Czech (or Slovak), Slovene, Croatian/Serbian/Bosniak, Macedonian, Bulgarian and/or maybe others.

Translations of 'The place is ours':

• Trg je naš / Площадьт е наш (pretty sure that's Bulgarian) / Naš trg / Nas trg / [unreadable] naše je námestie

Translations of 'Non potable water':

• Водата не е за пиене / Voda ni pitna / Непитна вода / Nepitná voda / Nepitka voda / Voda nije za piće

Translations of 'Open lawn':

• Ходенето по тревата е разрешено / Dozvoljeno je gaziti (ǧaziti?) po travi / Dozvoljeno gaženje trave

I also do not manage to identify the language in 3 other inscriptions for which glossaries easily available online did not help. Could it be Romani?

• Náj lasó ráji / Ámáro szi o placo / Pécsár saj ustarén

Is anyone here able to tell which is which? Note that many inscriptions (such as in French and Greek) have spelling mistakes and inconsistent respect of diacritics.

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments are used by Wikipedia editors to rate the quality of articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
