I note that the project isn't really publicized anywhere. You might at least add links to the project on the various other related UK projects. Also, evidently there's some way to announce new projects on the Wikipedia:Community Portal. You might consider contacting them to let them know about the project as well. Sassoon Mausoleum and related Brighton questions

I am a bit confused about this fascinating building. I put a note to that effect on the talk page of Edward Sassoon. Also, do the Brighton Baths still exist? Where did Dr. Anthony Relhan live in Brighton and/or hove? Is there much of a hill in Hove? I see references to things being on a hilltop but the pictures I see do not look very large. Any plans for a page on Flora Sassoon, who was a prominent figure in town? Was the famous war poet Sassoon her nephew or her grandson? --Filll 20:17, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

I've replied on the Edward Sassoon talk page about the mausoleum. By the baths, if you mean Mohammed's Baths, then no they don't, although I seem to remember reading that the Queen's Hotel building may incorporate some part of them, but that needs to be checked. The best resource, which is cited on the main Brighton page, is The Encyclopædia of Brighton. Other notable baths in Brighton include the Moderne open air "lido" at Black Rock, also sadly demolished for the benefit of the marina.
Sorry, can't help much on the other questions. With regard to the hill, do you mean a particular hill or just Hove's topography in general? The estate of Hangleton, for example, is well above the height of the centre of Hove, but I'd not call it a hill, it's more a ridge, as the South Downs begin. – Kieran T (talk | contribs) 21:18, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

Good to see this portal get started, I am very interested in contributing. Brief intro, I started the Marth Gunn and Peter Ward (English footballer) pages and re-wrote the Whitehawk article from scratch. Bands, solo artists, comedians, actors etc from Brighton

Should articles to these also be included in the project? There are loads of wikipedia articles about Brighton bands (including the Levellers, Peter & the Test-Tube Babies, Norman Cook), it would make sense to include them IMO as well as other celebrities who live in or come (came in the case of dead ones!) from Brighton. I would be happy to trawl around wikipedia, see what's there and start any that aren't if it's desirable to the project. I'm also wondering whether the page on the Quadrophenia film and other films set in Brighton should be included. Fork me 11:11, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

I'd say yes, don't know what other project members think. There is a category for films set in Brighton. I thought perhaps our list of articles in the project should be grouped, e.g. "Places (Bevendean, Moulsecoomb ...)" "Tourist attractions (Pier, Pavilion)", "Arts and culture" etc. Itsmejudith 14:30, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
Where would we "draw the line", though? The Levellers for example have long owned a studio complex in Brighton, but would we list other bands whose members merely used those facilities (the studio) or perhaps had a much-reported weekend home in the town? We need a definite criterion. (And I vote that it not be "member of band was born in Brighton" because that's not particularly relevant to Brighton culture.)
Also it would probably pay to come up with a standard form of words to add to the talk page for each article we add in this way, so people who know nothing about the connection to Brighton aren't bemused. – Kieran T (talk | contribs) 14:38, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
I think we'd draw the line at the band live, lived (for a significant amount of time) or were formed in Brighton. With other artistes again, lived, live or born. The Levs, for example, don't just own a studio in Brighton but the band are/were based here. These Animal Men were formed in Brighton and most of the band lived here. (I went to school with the bassist and the manager). Norman Cook lives here now and has made Brighton his home, etc etc etc Fork me 20:49, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

I didn't realise the grouping had already been suggested on here before I did it, great minds think alike :) (and it was me who misplaced Brighton Rock, don't know how I managed to do that!) On the matter of people from Brighton being included in the project, there are an awful lot of notable people from Brighton and we have to have limits somewhere, I think we should be concentrating our effects on those articles directly relating to Brighton, otherwise the scope is going to be too wide. -- Joolz 15:38, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

Replication in the project page

How many should we add to the project page? (This isn't the same issue as "which ones to include in the project itself") I was just about to add some obvious omissions to the "people" section which I was alphabetising, but then realised they're all in the article List of notable Brighton and Hove inhabitants – so why need we add them to our list too? – Kieran T (talk | contribs) 19:55, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

I hope not! The project should never set itself above the articles. Projects sometimes become "dormant" and get wiped. Additionally, that article, though not expansive, does provide more information per person (such as their Brighton connection) than does our list. – Kieran T (talk | contribs) 20:05, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

I think this is something we need to look at. Do articles contained within the categories we list also need to be listed seperately within the project or do we just assume that if they're in, for example, Category:Music from Brighton, England, then they're also a part of the project? Welcome box

When I received it, it said: "Hi, and welcome to the Brighton WikiProject! We're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of Londons metro systems."

As a quick fix I've changed the line to: "We're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of everything to do with the City of Brighton & Hove."

It may need changing to something better.

Project page organisation

A quick suggestion.. instead of having a seperate 'to do' section (or perhaps as well as) I think it would be better since we have a list of articles to build a table and for each article information about what needs to be done to it, so people can easily see what needs to be done to which article, would anyone mind if I went ahead with this? -- Joolz 14:42, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. People from Categories

A discussion has been opened at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject London#Category:People from Ealing by district about upmerging local area categories for People from... into current local government boundaries only. This could have implications across the whole of England if carried through. Your are invited to join the discussion. Guidelines

Hello WikiProject Brigton participants,

Just a line trying to promote some trans-WikiProject guidelines for settlement articles. WP:UKCITIES are guidelines from the "mother" WP:UKGEO project based on those at WP:CITIES (A "global" WikiProject for settlements that is US driven). They have been employed by a number of articles to standardise content, obtain a consistent style and approach and drive them towards good and featured article status with considerable success, and are so far also endorssed by Wikipedia:WikiProject Greater Manchester, Wikipedia:WikiProject Cheshire, Wikipedia:WikiProject Yorkshire, Wikipedia:WikiProject Somerset, WikiPedia:WikiProject Kent and Wikipedia:WikiProject Sheffield, amongst several others.

Not too many users (or indeed projects) are aware of the guidelines, and thought it may be helpful if all the county WikiProjects had a link to them to help them get the results they want.

As it stands, the project mainspace has no section entitled "Guidelines" - it may be suitable if {{main|WP:UKCITIES}} was affixed to that section. Hope that helps, -- Jza84 · (talk) 01:57, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. Monarch's Way

Hi, Can I ask for some help, from the experts in this WikiProject, with the Monarch's Way article. It is a 615 miles (990 km) long-distance footpath in England that approximates the escape route taken by King Charles II in 1651 after being defeated in the Battle of Worcester to Shoreham-by-Sea and passes through the area covered by this WikiProject. The article is a stub at present but some of us are trying to expand it and give details of the route (along the lines of the South West Coast Path which is currently a GA). We are using Talk:Monarch's Way as a communal sandbox for this and if anyone was able to add description, settlements, places of interest etc along the route for their local area this would be really helpful.— Rod talk 12:55, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Brighton

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

Missing geographical coordinates

Many Brighton & Hove articles are missing geographical coordinates. Finding the latitude and longitude of locations, and entering coordinates into articles is straightforwards, and explained at Wikipedia:Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members. Having coordinates on articles mean that they turn up in GoogleMaps, MultiMap and other such places which link to wikipedia based on geo-coordinates.

It is now possible to get lists of Brighton & Hove articles that have no geographical coordinates via Wikipedia:CatScan, for example:

Alternatively, if CatScan is down or very slow, you can find them by looking through Category:United Kingdom articles missing geocoordinate data.

The articles in the lists above are currently marked with {{coord missing}} templates, which need replacing with filled in {{coord}} templates containing their latitude/longitude data (or else have lat&long entered into the infobox).

There are about 27 articles missing coords - I hope you'll consider adding coordinates so as to make Brighton & Hove articles more visible on the web. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:33, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

I have started adding geodata to some articles. A specific place such as a church is easy but how do you decide what coordinates to use for an area or district? Hzv5wk (talk) 08:59, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
The rough centre of an area; or else the administrative centre. I acknowledge that a single coordinate for an area is a poor solution; but it at least locates it somewhat.
Update. For those interested, articles needing coordinates have been placed into a country categories, and so we have 37 articles in Category:East Sussex articles missing geocoordinate data, and 16 articles in Category:West Sussex articles missing geocoordinate data without geographic coordinates. Coords are useful for making the article appear on Google Maps & many other mapping services; and they allow our users to click through to see the article subject location on a map. There's a short guide to on how to add geocodes to articles ... it really is very easy to do. I hope you'll take some time to ensure that Sussex is as well represented as it can be on wikipedia by fixing up the listed articles. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk)

Is this project still active?

There are several regular editors still active, including myself and Hassocks, at least. But the project was never needed very much; I find that it's more inclusive of other editors to use individual article talk pages, and most project members seem to just keep those on their watchlists. Really the project seems to have been most useful for noticing new editors with an interest in the area, when they add themselves! – Kieran T (talk) 13:46, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Uneccessary and messy

That's a strong title for this section, but it's what I feel about a new article that's been created: Brighton and Hove city centre. (The "c"s were capitalised, but I've moved it.)

I prodded it (a quick deletion suggestion) but that's been removed by another editor (not the creator, but somebody whose contributions show an interest in deletion discussions) and so I've made some improvements like removing the most blatant opinion, original research, and irrelevant stuff, and adding some internal links.

But it's mostly duplication, and is in danger (as with all duplication) of getting out of synch with the relevant Brighton, Brighton and Hove, transport in Brighton, nightlife in Brighton... and other articles.

In any case, what on earth is the source for a centre for the conjoined city? It seems to be based on one allusion to a comment by the bus company.

So, I'm going to give it a little time for the merger suggestion which has been made (please comment) but if that excites no interest I'm going to put it up for the full deletion discussion process.

If I'm sailing against the wind here (which I doubt, just take a look at it!), but please don't merely tell me so, but go and improve the article ;-) It desperately needs references. – Kieran T (talk) 19:05, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. There have been a couple of articles created recently which go into some detail about the collections of a slightly unclear "organisation" entitled "Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove collections".

Thoughts added there, namely to merge with existing articles. The page appears to exist because "Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove" or similar is a name used within the Council for the combination of the various institutions. Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Brighton articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.
